Wow! I absolutely loved watching that! The structures are so beautiful, but also so clever. The heating system is absolutely genius. I'm obsessed! I'm COBsessed!
I stumbled across your channel, and I'm thrilled. I'm 63 @ disabled living in a mobile home that is literally falling apart. I'm terrified it's going to burn down around me some night. Seeing this, I'm going to try and get someone to help me build a little place for me to live where I'm safe. I'm on disability, but this is very cost effective. Im very excited about this, hope for a home at last! I live in tn , hopefully our dirt works along the same way yours does. Yours looks much drier, i live on a mtn. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Hey, I've been researching cob for about a decade now (my state requires a ton of permits though - for any structure, so it's a currently unrealized dream). And I'm in the same boat as you, for the most part. But from what I've learned, most soils would have at least some amount of clay in them. But the cob mix is basically clay subsoil (no organic bits), rough gravel/sand, straw, and water. It's just a matter of making different mixes and testing them to figure out what mix works best with your soil. And yes, there are guides to help you figure that out - there are enough resources to be found if you look - here on RUclips (Miguel is one of the ones I like best), online searches, books... If you put some effort into it, especially with gathering free or cheap parts to use over time when you find them instead of waiting to buy everything you need at the last minute when it's time to build, you can really do this affordably. Good luck!
Born, bred and raised in the Southwest. Adobe’ is my life and every Adobe’ home I’ve lived in is the best kind of building material for a living space. Cool in the heat of the summer and warm in the coldest of winters. Native cultures and ancient people had it right all along… 😊
I know Miguel, he is a staple in our community. I haven been in and worked on many of these structures for learning and fun. He is def the cob guy. It’s such a delight to see him getting his beautiful structures out to more of the world. What a treat to see! 🎉 He didn’t mention that when you are inside these structures there is a distinct feeling you get, like a warm embrace from Mother Earth. I don’t know how else to describe it. Congrats Miguel! I hope people contact you to build one for them. A home for $1,000 is something most people could use now a days. They are truly something special. I’m so proud 😊.
This is definitely the way to go!! I live in a condo in Florida. I can hear everything that goes on in my neighbors homes. Renovations, dogs barking and outside landscapers. One day I would like to have my own home somewhat like Miguel has created.
Dear Miguel, Your buildings are more than dignified. You are an inspiring artist. Man, i absolutely wanted to live in your spaces. So COZY. Oh man: The Sauna: Everyday: i wish. Your spacious walk in shower with removable roof is just a wonderful space to enjoy nature. Your buildings are True Living Art: inside & out BeYouTiFul. 🥰 Lovely What very clever use of heat inside outside! Man to have the sense of Hearth & Home with built in heat under the pillow and along the bed is Genius! What delightful use of glass and abalone shell, is stunningly beautiful. The living housetop is so cool. Seems like every detail has been thought of in your beautiful architecture. I just totally enjoyed this tour you gave us today. Excellent! Thank you.
I love these spaces! Hobbit Cobin with separate bath and separate kitchen spaces! LOVE! My one question is how they hold up in the rain? Do they take a lot of maintenance through the years? I don’t live far from Miguel, so I’m going to check him out!! Thank you for sharing his work!!! “Brown is the new green” ❤❤
Hi There, Miguel here...Glad you like the Hobbit Cobin! I built this about 12 years ago now and I havent done any maintainance on it at all. The three rules to ensure the longevity of a cob structure is that it has a good pair of boots, a jacket and a hat, namely, a foundation, plaster and roof, which this does... Yes indeed, Brown is the new Green!
Oh, wow! I would live there, four sure and certain! Move over monolith, this is my most favorite! Jenna, these types of walk through are amazing! Nice variety in your picks!
This is amazing & creative!!!! What a perfect way to also help house our veterans, the homeless & help our elderly stay out of nursing homes 🤗🙌😍✝️🙏 May God bless us who want to get our hands dirty to help others!!!!
This is pretty nice looking well built home. He did a great job of building it. Great video! It was great seeing this home and seeing how it was built.
What an industrious, brilliant and imaginative person. His furnace is absolutely ingenious. The fact that each structure took him no more than a couple of months at the most, that he created separate rooms in which to live his life, so as not to exceed the building code limits before he required permits and that he has a sauna or 'every man needs a home, every man needs a cave'... left me in awe. His creative use of materials from the Earth such as wood, straw & the earth itself plus his willingness to do manual labour shows that the accepted methods of construction & the economic exchange of goods does not have to be the only way. He also used materials we just throw away and materials we regard as inferior building products such as his use of straw for insulation, or even old clothes, shows just how much we have made 'newness' the be all and end all' of our existence. Let's not over look this man's amazing artistry. I just went along with the flow, never questioning the existing standard nor imagining that I could do things differently. It is too late for me as I am near the end of my life and am too disabled to be able to change. I admire people, such as this man, more than words can say.
I agree with everything you say but it's going to be a long and arduous uphill battle to convince people, especially people who's livelihood depend on modern construction methods and materials, that this method of building isn't shabby, cheap and trashy.
I love this concept! Natural, strong, environmentally healthy way of building that's also beautiful and creative. This guy has some beautiful living spaces. I love the natural process he shows. And living roofs are awesome! ❤
Housing is a human right. Not everyone is affluent. I advocate that such simple cost effective and eco-friendlier building methods become the norm as well as renewable energies like solar, wind and water. We need eco-builded cities integrated into the nature. As the economic crisis and wars have a grip on humanity currently, we have to re-thing the whole way we live and want to raise further generations. Thank you for sharing your cob house with us. A great inspiration and the building style was different from the usual earth bags, I find the structure this way more sturdy and the hay isolation can cater the colder climates.
Someone will always come along and ruin a good thing. As long as sin exists in this world nothing will last forever. Tribes in the past had a paradise like this once with even a welfare system that fed everyone but what ended up happening? My people turned to human sacrifices and cannibalism and then blamed everyone else but themselves for their downfall and their problems while becoming a third world drug warzone... 🫤 Every place starts great and has a rich culture in history but wickedness will always rear up its ugly head no matter where you go nothing ever lasts. Even IF we all collectively tried again some punk kid will convince a lot of people to do something horrible someday while claiming it's the right thing to do 👎
One of my fond childhood memories was when we had just moved into our newly built house, we hadn't landscaped the back yard yet. I had read about adobe in a book, and decided to try it. I made probably 100 bricks, and stashed them in a corner of the yard to dry. The next day, they had firmed up quite a bit in the hot California sun, so I started stacking them into a fort, using more straw-filled mud as mortar. I got about 2' high before mom found me working and put a stop to my impromptu cottage construction. Building with dirt is remarkably intuitive, and I spent two happy days playing in mud during my little endeavor.
I lived in Petaluma most of the time I lived in California (27 years!). I loved it there, I wish I never left, but it was just too expensive after I retired. I love these Adobe houses, you did a great job, best of luck to you.😊
Yea!! 👏🏽👏🏽 I was wondering if he would show up on your channel someday. Happy to see he put my ideas to use after I showed him my designs for a sauna. 🙂
This was amazing. I agree hopefully we can build more homes like those beautiful structures that are environmentally friendly and very affordable. Thank you for sharing. ❤ Happy New Year to all! Sending love, blessings, abundance, joy, health😇💙💫✨💖
Wow! This is a beautiful art form that I never even knew existed. He is such a talented artist, and I’m obsessed!!! Googling more art like this immediately!!! 🏃♀️ 🏃♂️ 🏃
My grandparents house in northern Mexico was built like a country house - room by room, as money allowed for each room to be built. The first room was built when they didn't have much, out of Adobe sealed with plaster. The rooms built later from rebar and concrete are probably stronger, but they are brutal in the summer or winter without heating or cooling. The adobe room is the most liveable one in the house, by far.
I'm not sure why they would say that building with the Earth's not sound when ancient civilization did it for centuries and those building are still around
Location. He's in the wrong state. California wants total control over everything and everyone. They want to milk every dime they can get out of people. By building like this they don't get as much in taxes like they would out of a home built out of overpriced materials bought from Lowes or Home Depot.
10:57 I suggest you put a metal basket or container on top of it, fill it with big stones (may look nice, for the interior, if you wish), sprinkle/pour the water on the stones, not the barrel. I suggest beer, instead of water ;) The hops' aroma is both, very "woody" and green. For a cheaper use, old bread, fermented with some spices of ur desire, can be a cheaper substitute. But there you have no hops aroma. You could even add commercial yeasts to the bread fermentation, if you don't drink it.
Love this concept of building and with earth changes these are the way to go like the Earth Ship homes in new mexico self sustaining bio structures there is so much you can do with earth and recycles materials

So Glad you are COBcessed! I use that one too...Its part of my extensive vocobulary...Yes, its pretty great to experience the heated bed, for sure!

Out of the 100’s of videos I’ve watched on alternative living this is one of the best and most important.
That is cool that his public bench was the 1st permitted cob structure in CA. Love that.💕

because we have been brainwashed to be a throw away society
It’s so much smarter to build with cancer causing materials or ones that are hyper flammable
What a great idea, where I came from long long times ago use to builded house with mud, Summer kept house cool and Winter
Warm, great job. Thank you.

makes so much sense!
Wonderful! I have always wanted a natural house! What could one e use in snowy areas to seal the cob??
You can apply a lime plaster over the cob in a cold environment or an earthen plaster with a few coats of lindseed oil...
WOW ❤❤
This has been my dream forever now! Under 1000$? I’ll watch:)) 😊So beautiful and grounding ♥️
ILL BE BUILDING MANY STRUCTURES LIKE THIS. THANKS FOR SHARING
