Back in 1974, my Father and a couple of other people came up with a method of building dome structures that was even less costly than your design and that required less labor. The structures could be adapted for use as housing and/or community facilities. One of the amazing aspects of the structure was that a dome with a diameter of 12 ft. with a center height of 8 ft. could be warmed to room temperature (68 to 77° F) in a relatively short period of time, by a single 60 watt incandescent light bulb. The basic construction of the dome started with a concrete pad to which was added a wireframe dome. Upon this frame, three layers of material were sprayed using a proprietary system that resulted in a 3 in. foam core sandwiched in between two 5/8 in. layers of specially formulated concrete. Once this was completely cured, openings could then be cut out for the installation of doors and windows. This construction process was so cost-effective that when it was presented to General Yakubu Gowon, the then head of state of Nigeria, as a cost-effective way of providing public housing, medical, and educational facilities, it was immediately accepted, and contracts were signed. Unfortunately, before the project could get started, the military coup of 1975 resulted in the overthrow of Yakubu Gowon. The incoming new head of state, General Murtala Mohammed, canceled all of Yakubu Gowon's contracts, arrested and put my Uncle in jail, who was there to oversee and manage the project, and confiscated all of the equipment associated with the project.
Having invested everything into this project and not being able to recover any of the costly equipment, my Fathers business was forced into bankruptcy, and to my knowledge, the building process was never utilized. So it is great to see that the concept is at least being revived and perhaps this will lead to the rediscovery of the process that held so much promise back some 45 years ago.

They took the average space a person occupies standing. They came to the conclusion you could fit the world's population in Jacksonville FL or Duval County.

When I was a child, I used to think how cool it would be if our neighborhoods were like the Smurfs. LOL! These domes are close enough! Also, imagine another world where their engineering decisions took a different direction than ours. It could look like this.

I’ve always loved the dome home concept. Brilliant!
As noted, the tensile strength of the material is not very high. Perhaps it could be improved with the addition of microfiber reinforcement. The concept is somewhat similar to pumicecrete, where natural pumice, a very lightweight volcanic rock, in a pea gravel size is the primary ingredient with the concrete binding it together. It should also be noted that these types of lightweight cast concrete structures allow for a wide range of final forms, not just domes which are not for everyone. The material is also suitable for hybrid structures, where the primary loadbearing frame is of a more conventional material, e.g., reinforced concrete or steel and the panels are of aircrete. That would be a lot easier sell to obtain a building permit in many jurisdictions.
I watched one video in which they put a fiberglass mesh on the exterior and then coated it with a thin layer of concrete.
I'm blown away by the craftsmanship and beauty of the domes you've built. How well do these structures hold up against cold conditions like teens or even below zero?
Many of them have been build in cold climates and they perform very well. Domes are efficient as the reduce the amount of unsed head space. Aircrete also has good insulation value which is great for hot or cold.
What is the R-value, and do you have a variable reduction method to make the difference across areas less, and are there different materials testing for the outer varnishes (the fibre ones and fibreglass /stucco) Also lastly, at which point would one put paint or dye on top of the finished concrete (as I know ordinary floor concrete is easier to paint after curing and before varnishes)
@@domegaia could you answer the above questions, R-Value (and then with additional coatings the impacts of those) and if having a dye which ways are best to go about it (time to put on, which type of coating is best or dye blended into the aircrete)
R value is usually around 5-6 per inch. here we also have quite a bit of far les insulating mortar which probably reduces the overall insulation by half. Still reasonable. Looks like 4 inch walls, so an r value of 10 which is about what an insulating cover and reflective cover will provide.

This seems like a great way to use lightweight concrete, just for the looks alone I would love to build one and it certainly seems feasible for many uses.
I love this! I've been looking for more affordable environment friendly homes for awhile. I initially wanted a container home because of the much lower construction cost but THIS is next level construction and this might be what my first house will be. Thank you for sharing.

I LOVE the idea of this style of home! Wow! Unfortunately when I started reading about "aircrete", I discovered the reason why we don't typically do residential builds with aircrete is because it cracks so easily. Aircrete has incredible pressure strength, but it is brittle and will crack with the annual changes in temperature as all structures expand and contract with the seasons. If you are in a tropical environment with very little seasonal change (like this home owner was in Thailand), then you're probably in good shape. But if you build something like this in Northern California where temperature swings are huge, cracking is going to be a big issue! If you have found a way to resolve this, please post here! I would be interested in learning more for sure!

Do your slabs crack in Northern Cali a lot? They put rebar in these and a special fiberous mix in the concrete in the US, I would think it would keep it from cracking? Anyway, I see some that are made from steel frames and no concrete. Not sure how durable those are..
This is a common misunderstanding about aircrete. While aircrete on its own is brittle and can crack, we use reinforcing layers on the inside and outside that give it excellent tensile strength. Also, the dome shape works very well for aircrete. With traditional concrete, you put rebar inside to give it tensile strength but with aircrete, we use fiber-reinforced stucco and plaster. It ends up being like a surfboard with a lightweight inside glued to two thin layers, which makes a very strong composite material.
What if you cover it with something that would limit that?
@@LocdnessMomster thats just what domegaia said above in the comment. they use fiber reinforced stucco or plaster over the aircrete which insulates it from rain and temperature changes.

@K. Salt She’s asking because houses are built to fit their environments. What would be the use of building a house in Florida with the same build as a British house?
@K. Salt but what about the effects of freeze/thaw cycling many times over an average winter?? Will the air crete crack? Where i am, we get temperatures of minus 30 Fahrenheit. To keep water available in winter, we have to pour a basement - so the water comes in the house below the frost line. Our frost line is 6 feet down. So do you see why we wonder?
You could insulate it more for your surrounding climate
It seems to be made in hotter climates, although it's something to look up
@@mominminnesota6648 supposedly having a better network of pores allows water to basically escape concrete much easier and be less susceptible to cracking. at least this is my understanding.

I believe aircrete has a pretty high insulation value per inch. If you build your aircrete walls thicker than you would in a tropical climate, you may very well be able to achieve a very satisfactory resistance to heat transfer (R-value). Of course, thicker walls mean more materials but just about any conventional building system in colder climate requires more stuff anyway.

This sounds just about perfect. In your experience, are the communities and counties pretty receptive, as far as building codes and permits? I'm in New Mexico. This would be beautiful out here.
New Mexico has houses called “earth ships” you may want to look into what regulations they have there
building codes? we don't need no stinking building codes. they are like so called masks, face coverings. the govs way of more control. can you read "1984".

I love this. how would aircrete hold up during a hurricane?
I don't know how well it would take to large flying debris but the rounded walls would make it near impossible to be blown away by the wind. Some houses that are made specifically to be hurricane proof actually use a dome design I've noticed.

$11,000 in Thailand for materials and labor equates to probably more than $50,000 in the USA and even more in Europe.
He didn't say but I believe $11,000 does NOT include labor, only materials. This process is labor intensive so if you have to pay someone to work on this, plan accordingly.
If you plan to build several of them, the first one or two will likely take much longer.
If they offer a good training at a reasonable cost, taking that training is a must even for someone experienced with standard construction techniques.
He literally said in the video that the materials cost for the one pictured was about $2000. And if he was referring to a different currency he wouldn't have used the word dollars. There are no other countries in the world that use the word dollars when talking about their own currency.
Also, if you really want real answers why not just contact them directly instead of commenting on the video. I don't understand why people do this. it makes no sense. 90% of the time on any topic, anywhere on social media or video platforms they never get a response from the author. Seems pretty ridiculous when you think about it. If you are really serious about looking into it, you wouldn't have wasted your time commenting on here you would have gone straight to their website and emailed them. Dreamers talk, doers walk.

Love this!!! Just what I've been looking for. Ever since I saw Roger Dean's home design from the 70's he created and I remember speaking with him in 2010 about his now ongoing efforts to create an entire development with the help of an English Architectural Firm in London, he appeared well on the way. This would have answered a key component of what they needed.

Yes, that's great. However, you will still need wiring regardless of what your energy source is. I love the idea of having one of these near a flowing stream, with a water wheel
for supplementary electricity along with solar.

@@TheSouthernLady777 if you want light and running water u need wires and small plumbing. U can totally live off grid with no lighting. But u cannot live w/o hit water. So your left with a fire stove to heat your bath water, fire to sterilize your water that u will have to find and retrieve yourself. If u don't know how to cure your meat or hunt u won't make it. Bc u don't have a freezer to stock your supply. Greens are not all yr round unless u live in Florida, California and other partial tropical areas. One summer of beans will not last a full winter's supply either. Just saying to the least u need off grid electric by solar assistance with a charged back up in case u have 3 days of rain or snow and barely any sun.
Another good question that I hope he answers sufficiently. This should have been addressed in his video.

It kind of reminds me of a book I read by Elizabeth Klarer of how advanced beings from other star systems live in harmony with their environment and the peace and tranquillity of their homes. These dome-shaped homes remind me of her descriptions. I love these beautiful homes, I would certainly love to live in one.

This is one of the few times that I saw a dome structure where the windows and doors don't ruin the dome aesthetics. There is really no way to put a square or rectangular window or door in a dome wall and have it look good. Secondly, I"ve always wondered how one would make an operable round window. Fixed round windows are easy, but how about ones you could open? The solution I saw at 4:43. You have a bisecting mullion and the straight edge created could accept hinges for a half-moon section of window. So rather than the hinges on the perimeter, they're in the middle. But I must admit, I've never seen that implemented, and to have it custom made would be anything but cheap.
Split the window vertically or horizontally so you have two semicircular panels? You can hinge on the bilinear axis or from the perimeter edge of each semicircle? Just a thought.

I think they do well in both hot and cold climates! It's mostly trapped air which forms great insulation, but I feel like the concrete in it would naturally radiate heat. I suppose you could paint it white to help 🤔
