I was at Boca Grandma pass once and saw a few tarpon that were quite a bit bigger than that one, jump 15/20 feet in the air and landed in boats. It sounded like a bomb went off. I think it happened 3 times, maybe only twice, but on the last jump the tarpon partially landed on the front fisherwoman, injuring her shoulder. An ambulance met that boat on shore and off she went for treatment. I figure that her injuries were probably pretty severe. The professional tarpon tour was there and a few fish were weighed in at around 200 lbs. Very few (maybe 2) were successfully landed and weighed. We hooked into 3 of those big tarpon and I felt like the one I hooked was going to break my back. I've hooked a few tarpon but I've never even been around 200 lbers and their strength was incredible. The professionals told us that the water at Boca Grande is deep,cold and full of oxygen . This combination allows the tarpon to fight MUCH harder there than they do at other stops on their tour. And, I've never seen 200 lb tarpon caught any other time on their tour! I also didn't know that 200 lb tarpon can jump 15/20 feet (seemed higher) in the air! They were jumping because there were HUGE sharks everywhere, and we witnessed several fishermen lose their big tarpon to hungry sharks. It was a fun time, saw things that I'd never even imagined but, if you want to catch a tarpon at Boca Grande when they are running, hire a professional. It was VERY stressful trying to navigate your boat through 100 boats, all fitted basically in a football field, (when the school is found (fish finders) everyone goes to the spot and drops down to try and catch them. Then, if you hook one, you gotta try to navigate your boat through 100 other boats (half of which are professionals and each fish is big $$$ to them) can be a little overwhelming and takes the fun out of the whole experience. However, it's probably the easiest place to hook into a tarpon, as thousands of tarpon come annually to " mate". We just happened to pick a year when the schools were full of 200 lb fish. Interesting fact (I guess, the professionals told us this) The tarpon are there to mate/spawn! They don't even eat while they are there. So, the only/best way to catch them was to find the school, then send huge jigs down to them, and bounce the jigs up and down. It annoys the tarpon, and eventually they "bite" at the jigs to get rid of them!

@@imdavis1270 A derringer is a very small pistol - pocket size. We used to go fishing for muskies and northerns in Canada and back then some of those lakes still had huge fish. Especially the muskies. One of those flopping around in a boat could be a problem. If we hooked a big one Granddad would shoot it in the head before we hauled it into the boat. Not easy, but it was the safest thing to do.

Tons of fresh fish and seafood come in daily on the fishing vessels. They pull up to the docks here in Destin and sell to the public right off their boats. They clean the fish for you. Sale direct.
