Underground dome house of the family who led geese to fly home

- Paula and Bill Lishman spent many winters in a poorly-insulated A-frame cabin before realizing they needed to go underground to use the earth’s energy to stay warm, so they knocked the top off a hill, dropped in ferro-cement domes, and covered it up again with dirt.
Thanks to skylights cut into every dome and the white-powdered marble that covers the interior, their earth-sheltered home is naturally well-lit despite being below the frost line.
Fifteen feet below ground, the soil temperature remains about equal to the annual average temperature of the area’s surface air so earth-sheltered homes use sod’s constant temperature to stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Bill Lishman believed in rethinking not just the conventional home, but also how we live. He reimagined his home’s refrigerator by building a round appliance that pops up out of the countertop so the heavier cool air stays inside when opened (via compressed air).
In 1986, Bill Lishman began training Canada Geese to follow his ultralight aircraft and to "teach" the birds migration routes to avoid a threatened extinction. His work on "Operation Migration" brought him popular recognition with the 1996 movie Fly Away Home starring Jeff Daniels.
Paula Lishman also believes in rethinking convention. In 1979 she began her fashion label reinventing the fur trade by using spun fur to knit her clothing.

This lady would make an excellent teacher, I will probably never forget that this house is Earth integrated and below the frost line, at 12-14 inches
Omg me too
Well, she left the photographer to fend for herself as she was carrying the camera and door slams in her face, so inconsiderate!
I literally came to make a comment about how many times I've heard 'earth integrated', and I find your comment.
lol
Well done.
Remember that frost line is dipper in places closer to the poles, so some variations might be needed depending on your geographic location.
the school system is bad, Robert Kiyosaki
So, let me get this straight... it's fire proof, almost sound proof, infiltration proof, keeps pretty much the same temperature all year, it's way stronger and you don't need to worry about painting the outside while you are contributing with nature. Why aren't we all living in houses like that again?
Exactly. 😊 Unfortunately, I think the answer is... people follow programing; which is to work a 9-5 job in order to buy a box house that used a lot of resources to build: resources that support a lot of different polluting industries. And, so the programming continues. 😕😣😧
And it's got vents for fresh air circulation.
Maybe because it's a fortune to build and few people have the know how to do it. A dome is not as space efficient as a cube. Footprint is large, so also expensive. Modern architecture often uses a roof as a garden, but it's still not affoardable.
A couple of reasons. First, they built it themselves. To get a construction company to do something like this would be enormously expensive. 2nd, it doesn't fit modern codes. Trying to get a government to agree with something like this would be almost impossible. People who try things outside the "norm" have a huge disadvantage. One of the biggest problems is that the .gov wants engineers to sign off on anything that doesn't fit current code (massive expense) and insurance companies won't insure it.
Why aren't we building like this today? There are two answers to that - a short one and a long one! Short one is "we used to" but the long one is too complex for this space so I'm currently writing a book about! To elaborate even a short answer: a couple of centuries ago, when we were in principle building same way as we are today still, a common man, a farmer or a tradesman, typically without much education to speak of but armored with knowledge and wisdom inherited from forebears KNEW BETTER than we are today, took advantage of cardinal orientation, local materials, natural principles and wasted nothing!
Today we are placing houses parallel to adjacent roads (which some senseless art-college graduate slash county council planning department employee scribbled on "general" plan at first place), building clusters of completely pointless, short-lived sleeping quarters while ruthlessly ignoring Solar gain via Cardinal alignment to South, natural light, Summer and Winter Arc, heat loss, Solar shading etc. but also the importance of Organic Social Environment, Working Full Loop Infrastructure, Circular Economy etc. etc. the sum of which can be only described as >>Total Ignorance of Nature, Environment, Social Structure, Future of this Planet and ALL of its inhabitants" derived by our long cultivated arrogance as a "rulers of the world and nature" that we have acquired though our schooling since second half of 19th century!
What has to happen' is the entire Paradigm Shift from "ruling race" attempting to control and govern Nature and to become "Conscientious Custodians" of that incredible Space Ship of ours called Planet Earth with all its inhabitants and organic structures, to grow out of our infancy as human race and start behaving and acting AT LEAST as adolescents with potential to grow up and reach certain meaningful maturity one day!
So far - standing by!
Gets told that it is earth-integrated 10 times,

I didn't notice that irony!
That's obviously due to the fact the average layperson hasn't a clue what an earth-integrated home is. But underground type home is something anyone can conceive in thought and registers in mind by which then curiosity of how exactly that would be brings in the viewer traffic
The reporter was annoyed by how many times she repeated that

Someone needs to bring that fridge to market. What an interesting and inspiring woman she is. What it would have been like to grow up with a mother like her. Simply Amazing! Thank you for sharing her story.
You could mod a small chest freezer into something similar. Ofc those are square. But the tub principle giving the best efficiency would be the same. You can run many chest freezers at regular fridge temps to.
How would you make it come up on the counter, that's what I can't figure out.

@@joan-lisa-smith It's best to actually use multiple terms. When You upload to RUclips You can add tags relating to likely search terms that your targeted audience would type in & these tags make Your video appear automatically in multiple searches on Google & RUclips yet the tags themselves are invisible to Your audience but powerful in their reach.
For this particular video You'd add "Earth Integrated Home" "Underground Home" "Earth Ship" "Earthbag Home" "Green Living" "Eco Friendly Living" "Off Grid Living" "Homestead" even though it's very few of these things. The Public won't see these words on Your video but whenever someone Googles any one of these topics Your video will come up in their Google & RUclips searches because You added the tags when editing Your uploads to improve Your analytics.
Like for Mine I'll add "Travelers Notebook" "Ephemera" along with a million other Journal & vintage related Names even if it's a full size Journal that I've created.
For this video I'd literally have added both Names in the title as well as in the tags but that's Me. It covers more bases.

It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle. The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable tunnel without smoke, with panelled walls and floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs, and lots and lots of pegs for hats and coats--the hobbit was fond of visitors. The tunnel wound on and on, going fairly but not quite straight into the side of the hill--The Hill, as all the people for many miles round called it--and many little round doors opened out of it, first on one side and then on another. No going upstairs for the hobbit: bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, pantries (lots of these), wardrobes (he had whole rooms devoted to clothes), kitchens, dining-rooms, all were on the same floor, and indeed on the same passage. The best rooms were all on the lefthand side (going in), for these were the only ones to have windows, deep-set round windows looking over his garden and meadows beyond, sloping down to the river."

She isn't telling you to call it earth-integrated she is just saying she and her family calls it earth-integrated. When I think of an underground house I think of an underground bunker, shipping container home fully underground, or something else along those lines. I don't think of a house that is partially underground at 14 inches and a layer of soil above it. Language was meant to communicate something as accurately and as concisely as possible. Phones, tablets, and laptops are all technically computers but we call them different names so we don't have as much of a chance to miss communicate. Peace… Shalom… Salam... Namaste and Thank You for All that you are doing to Heal our Mother Earth 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ 🌷 ☮️❤️
Ive been dreaming of my integrated Earth dome home for over 20 years. I've had the rough plan of the Ecoshell one and two from the Monolithic Dome Institute since 2004. Finally bought some property with an old fixer upper doublewide that will be paid off in one more year. Then I can redirect that money towards making my dome home a reality. Yours is magnificent! I so appreciate the knowledge and ideas that you have bestowed upon me!
Her husband/father idk which one she’s talking about building the home but he was an absolutely genius a engineer comparable to the Egyptians
Gimme a break!!
No one is comparable to the Egyptians,
They made an entire pyramid without any advanced tools that till this day, scientists still don't have a explanation of how they did it, all they have is theories!
When I die don’t you dare put me in a box and shove me underground I shall be earth integrated.
my goal in life is to have a swing inside my house
That's a good goal. I have one hanging from my ceiling about 17 feet up, and you swing back under the loft, so you swing out, then back and UP!
As if the whole thing couldn't be any cooler, you find out she is the "beaver weaver" Love it all!!! Omg wish I could hang out with her!🤣
Oh my god. That house is awesome. It feels like wood fairies live in that house.
Or Star Wars lol
@@TeriyakiDior Hahah. True.
Teletubbies.
Feels or seems?
@@RepublicTeaRoom seems would imply fairies are real.
Imagine a community of houses like this on a hill and each would have its own unique design
I imagined that 40+ years ago as a high school student studying architectural drawing. :)
@@HibernusMortis1 nice!
I was just about to respond to him as well, saying I also imagine such a thing!
It's like the Shire. I'm working to get a bit of land and parcel off chunks to people, even if they can't really afford to pay me back, so that we can begin to forge a life outside the obsolete problems of the world.
@@HibernusMortis1 I'm still stuck on location, balancing the advantages of staying where I know a few people and the layout, versus going where it's cheaper, versus better climate or colder.
I was about to use Xmind to start mind mapping the whole thing LOL.
@@JakeKlineMusic This project right there has my attention ...
@@ahumanwhodoesntlikenoobs395 awesome man. Fuck noobs. 😎
What’s your location? Are you interested in doing something like that?
Wow! This home is amazing. The creativity in design, attention to detail and workmanship is truly inspiring. A work of art.
That refrigerator is magnificent! 😁
Fly away home is one of the best movies that dramatize actual events.
The Fly Away Home house! Raised my kids on that film.
What an imaginative man!
What a wonderful Life.... It made me cry when she mentioned her husband had passed what a brilliant couple so creative with her beautiful crocheted and knitted designs in the fur. I was a costume designer and made me think back to those times watching this is making me so overcome with emotions what a wonderful family life filled with creativity and love and nature I wish it never had to end.... I wish the whole world could be just like that just like that family just like that house just in that beautiful place
You’ve brought us on so many amazing architectural adventures and this is a real gem!
I have been saying for LITERALLY DECADES that this is how houses in the midwest U.S. should be built for safety against tornadoes.
But what about flooding?
@Deimos Cain are you male or female
@@fightermma how is that relevant?
@@amber-dn5jk What are you referring to?
I do as I please not as what others want me to act like. I have my own autonomy.
Shade On A Cool Day ok
This is one the most amazing house I have ever seen on RUclips.
The fridge design is really cool. I love that design
That is the greatest refrigerator I’ve ever seen that is innovative!
This is my third time watching. I'm so appreciative that Paula allowed us into her and Bills' home.
My Grand daughter and I have watched Fly Away Home so many times, it's her favorite movie when she visits.
Oh, yes. The movie.
6:56 oh my, I love that pop-up refrigerator. That is genius, and she is right about the cold staying down in it. This also keeps the humidity out.
@shadyshawn trismegistus What do you mean? Can you point out the design flaws. Because I really like the way it is, and if I ever build my own house I want different solutions
It's genius and practical! Could easily hide many Shady Shawns in it! Nothing shitty about it.
Yeah Id love to spill something in the bottom of that fridge.. Hope its user service friendly because it looks like a nightmare to clean/maintenance being integrated into cement, the table, and the floor. The pneumatics will need new orings and seals eventually..nothing lasts forever. Not much room either..
Im so sorry for the loss of Bill to the family. 💜💜💜
that fridge is ingenious and totally functional, bravo
