    Wonderful. In my 20's I wanted to build a tiny strawbale cabin in the woods in Maine and gradually build it out to be around a courtyard of other rooms. Life got in the way and no matter how fast I ran, how hard I worked, how much I learned I never got to that home. Now at 65 and disabled I am working on rehabbing an old house in a small town and just have a very productive garden in the yard. Because of all I did do I can smell the forest, the green wood, the straw, hear the goats and hens, feel the plastering... along with the bone crushing fatigue, all from my warm home while I spin yarn.

    Thank you for making this video. It helps me dream, get inspired and get hope about living a simple life and building my own home someday. I've wanted a straw bale home for many years. Passive solar is a great way I would think to heat the home in the winter if the windows are facing south. I love how you incorporated the wood stove into the kitchen although I have though about incorporating a solar oven into one instead. People need to see videos like this so I hope you make more videos about gardening or other building ideas you do.

      That's not an bad idea at all! We're planning to make an extension to the front soon, a climbing space for some grapes to grow so they can provide shade in summer :) Otherwise it's too hot!

    Wow, this video deserves much more views than this. I was dreaming about building a straw bale house the other day, and now your video popped up. Looks great! Good job. Reminds me of the passive house design where there is thermal mass added to the inside walls where the sun will be hitting (the side with the windows is positioned to the south). We live in a log house from 1865 is the finnish countruside, so not that far from you. We also do a lot of gardening and sustainability stuff!! Fantastisch project. Proficiat. Jullie hebben gedaan waar velen (ook ik) slechts van dromen. Wat volgt is geen kritiek maar In een ideale wereld zou de dakisolatie nog performanter moeten zijn dan die van de muren en er naadloos mee aansluiten. Het dak aan de voorkant zou een eind moeten doorlopen dus overhangen om de zomerzon te blokkeren. De houten palen zouden niet rechtstreeks in de grond mogen staan. Verbranden is niet voldoende op lange termijn. Ik ben zeker dat jullie dat wel weten en al een tweede huis plannen met verbeteringen. Ik hoop jullie ooit te kunnen bezoeken. Succes.

    • @The.Land.of.Slow.Living
      @The.Land.of.Slow.Living  Год назад +1

      Hey! Dank voor het kijken en voor al de nuttige tips!! Isolatie in het dak had inderdaad dikker gemogen. Overhang van voor plannen we deze lente aan te bouwen. Voor de palen in de grond volgden we de instructies uit Ben Law zijn timber frame boeken, palen zijn in ons geval op de bedrock geplaatst met flink wat stenen er rond, verbrand en behandeld met rubber. Denk je dat dat op den duur problemen geeft? We plannen nog wel een stenen muurtje onder de rand te metselen van het huis voor eventueel support en afwerking. We hebben veel bijgeleerd in ieder geval van het hele avontuur! Op bezoek komen mag altijd, laat maar horen! Groetjes

    Thank you for sharing! Unfortunately where we live they have legislated that owner builders must hire a building certifier to continually inspect and sign off on all parts of the build, at great cost! Thus, it is still possible to get approval and build your own dream home, but still seems quite costly compared to the lovely job you have done! You have sacrificed, but you are doing it! Well done.

    I love the fact that you have used so many natural materials, but may I ask what your expectations are of their lifetime? How long do you expect your wooden post foundations to last?
    Also, I assume that you don't speak Estonian. Do you experience a language barrier?
