Builds open-plan home by hand with Japanese-inspired carpentry

- Tim Seggerman bought a rundown shack in rural New Jersey to build a house out of simple materials with his own labor. “After clearing away the unhappy rotted house, I set out to build (essentially by one carpenter, me) a simple modernist cabin for c. $125 a square foot using Cypress, Douglas Fir and Common White Pine available at the local yard.”
It took him 7 years to build and Seggerman estimates the materials cost him around $100,000, but the home is spacious and light with views that soar into the surrounding forest. It’s mostly cypress that Seggerman purchased from Tinsman Lumber in Lumberville, Pa., “a family-owned yard dating (continually in the family!) back to 1785 in the same spot, all the many yard woodsheds still clad in the original 240-year-old cypress."
He didn’t treat the wood because he wanted the house to be indistinguishable from the surrounding woods. And as the woods change with the seasons from green to red and orange to brown, the house reflects these colors off the wood. Seggerman’s niece lives in the home and says she can watch the woods for hours.

I like that you don't put music over your vids, it gives the viewer more opportunity to feel the true vibe instead of being directed by the music.
My grandfather, Antonin Raymond, was the architect of the house this owner/builder grew up in. Small world.
I'm thrilled that Tim and his neighbors fought eminent domain and won. The house is a wonder. I particularly love the sliding bedroom doors.
This is probably my favourite house that I have ever seen! I also hope his niece appreciates the work of art - so clearly a literal labour of love - that she gets to call home!
The guy is super humble. To build that entire home by himself, including the furniture, and making it seem like anyone can do it. Pretty incredible. And the setting is really spectacular. Great use of windows to take all that nature in. I was surprised he went with a flat roof though, seeing that he does get snow which would then be hard on the wood. But I really loved the rustic simplicity of the home.
It looks like it’s angled, but yeah, for snow I’m not sure. Beautiful place.
Simple is hard. This guy is a genius. Reminds me of a practical Frank Lloyd Wright.
One of my favourite videos of yours. I appreciate Tim gaslighting us that it's all so simple and require little skill! He's a gem!
It is simple. It requires more choice and determination. Libraries, including the internet, can give you access to skill. Never gaslight yourself😎
One could watch this 100 times and still glean more information and inspiration. Hey kids, indeed you can build you own home with a bit of determination, thought and sweat.
I love this home so much. I don't know how he's not living in it himself. His neice is lucky.😍
This home had really good vibes. I wonder if Kirsten senses that sort of thing when she visits different houses.
It wasn't just me, then! Strange how that come over so powerfully on video, right?
Watchin the wind for three hours. Respect.
The house has a lot of character and blends in with the surroundings so peacefully. Hats off to the guy for building his house with his own hands.
I am heartened that Tim and his neighbors fought eminent domain and won!! The List of the Harmed in PA is extensive. Love the house and Tim''s sensibilities! Thank you
Pretty much a perfect definition of shelter, minimal and abundant.
Well said. 💕
Love this house so much. One of my most favourite ones. What a clever man Tim is. For those of you wanting to see his original house look at " Brooklyn crafted impermanent house gets wiser with owner" from March 11, 2013. Thank you Kirsten for both of these wonderful videos.
How satisfying to see. My father sold the house he designed for my mother and we moved into the stable for my father's horse. The house was peggy cypress planks inside and out. Most of them had been pulled from the bottom of the surrounding waterways and aged to perfection. Each room had a dutch style door leading outside. My father's dream of having multiple horses changed into design of space to accommodate a family. My dad would have been blown away by this gentleman's vision and imagination. Thank you Kirsten for providing us with such thoughtful and inspirational content. ❤
♥♥♥
Think he did a fantastic job, very impressive. his neice is very lucky, hope she appreciates all the work he put into making that. Well done sir
Yeah, I agree, its a nature box, luv this house. I'm surprised this style has not been adopted more in our country ....until now ? The cat looks content, as if he likes it because he can watch the outside from all sides.
Someone is a pretty decent SINGER!!! :)
A real house made for living, warm, functional and incredibly well thought out!!!
Overcoming the threat of being able to complete the build is awesome..love the Japanese influence..so much light with views that stretch across the open fields and trees. 🌳 🌲 🌳
Kirsten, I have been watching your amazing channel since the beginning and I can honestly say that this home is my favorite that you have ever featured. There is just something so special about it, and it's owner. I would love to see you come back there when and if the basement gets finished. It is all simply stunning, and peaceful, with such an amazing connection with Mother Nature. I could really be happy in a space like this.
That house is amazing. I love the simplicity and clean lines. I would love to live in that house on my property. He did an incredible job.
Lucky grand daughter to have such a talented Grandpa. I am in sync with his ideas...I love modern Japanese styles.
Not filling a space with walls is something I can appreciate as an Architect
Such a beautiful story. I love the photo of them back-to-back…
Lovely.
To live in a structure of wood, built from vision, craftsmanship, depth of soul and creativity, emersed in pristine woods to experience, reflect and ponder the essence of trees, while watching the spectrum of light dancing through your days and the moonlit nights.........
I too live in a home built of wood, of Cedar and Pine, a chalet/cabin designed and built by my parents in the early 1960's, in a pristine forrest of Pine and Cedar in the Sierra Nevada. Homes created from dreams, labor and heart are truly a gift to many generations to follow....... Ode to those who create habitats to enjoy, sharing such beauty, environments to simply be, to thrive and to live so well.
Wonderful.
Love it, basement, ground floor and outside, beautiful house in a setting worth fighting for.
Wow, I love the style with all that wood but not rustic but rather Japanese. It's so cozy. This is inspiring for my own house. Amazing that he did this all by himself! Wondering why he doesn't live there.
I love no walls and the space he made using what he had. It's perfect.
People in cities live in lofts. I've been in many houses that are not full of walls. I absolutely love it. Especially the very large porch. 👍❤️ Well done. Thank you do much for sharing.
It’s the perfect house!! I love that most of the furniture and storage is built in. And I love the design.
Hats off to the builder..
The beauty of simplicity
I absolutely love the N.E. US. Such beautiful history
This channel is a seemingly endless fountain of ideas on how to live better
I love the openess and the Japanese aesthetics of this build.
Lucky guy. This is an amazing home. So spacious, airy and filled with light. The simplicity of the wooden interior also adds to the sense of space. The large windows facing the trees give you the sense of living in a forest with the trees, and not separately from them. In this day and age of unaffordable housing, I would give up a piece of my anatomy to have a house like this. But good luck with that unless one is wealthy.
Did the niece really just say 3 hours!!?
Absolutely love the house. Very inspirational for my own home in the future.
How this video deserves to be spread and shared all over the World.
Tim, your house is a true piece of art. 🏆
Thank you for showing us how beautiful and simple it can be done!!
I love the interior and the cat seems very happy there!
We used to live in that county of NJ 35 yrs ago. My family is still there. Were now in Wisconsin...
One of the most Stunning builds i've ever seen, one day it will be a heritage build all of its own.....well done Tim, truly great work ✌
He obviously started building this a long time ago being it's all hand made, I'm astounded about how modern it looks...beautiful home ❤
What a completely beautiful home. Open concept and as few full walls as possible has always been an interest to me. I Love this kind of place.
Thank You Kirsten and Nicolas!
Beautiful place, his niece is extremely lucky to have this living arrangement. ❤️
oh my....I'd love to live in a house so open and bright! :)
I like him. He made it feel like everything is easy to make
8:48 That curved wood. "Anybody could do this in a day.. if they know what they're doing."
10:30 That skylight. "It's really simple, just make a frame...then use the same kind of caulk that they use for the space shuttle"
Really easy
This is beautiful. I wish I could smell it! Good on you for fighting the fight and winning.
I love it! The whole Japanese aesthetic is lovely. I could move right in. A bit more space than I need, but having the whole downstairs for an art studio - amazing! People continue to amaze me - and you seem to know how to find them, Kirsten!
Kirsten, you came to New Jersey!
So interesting how his growing up in an Antonin Raymond house shaped his later life.
Simply beautiful in every way. I could live here and be happy every day. Love the Japanese influence, the artistry, the ambiance, the wood, the open concept, connection to earth & nature, what beauty, what heart. Love this, Tim is amazing! Thank you for another wonderful video and bringing things like this to us!
I remember the episode where he showed his town house and it was also fantastic.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you.

I just LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS HOUSE. This area just reminds me of the environment i was born in and spent the first 10 years of my life. Now at 64 years old i yearn for this again.Thank you for the inspirational peek into your life.
I could not like this house more. It is gorgeous.
Thoughtful. Simple. Beautiful.
Its crazy how 10 years later you were able to meet up with Tim again. I adore his philosophy on the Brooklyn house you looked at back in 2013, and this is no different. Thank you for sharing his ideas and stories, and thank you for the work you do!
Tim is very knowledgeable. I could talk to him trying to absorb his insights for hours. Hopefully we can visit sometime again!
Is there a link to this 2013 video with Tim? Would love to watch it. Thank you
Wow!
Having many huge windows can really bring magic into a space.
I loved this home.
For me, it is homy.
❤❤❤
I really love this! I think that I would ad another two bedrooms downstairs. That would be everything to me. That’s such an awesome layout!
Stunning home. You are a master builder. Japanese architecture is amazing.
One of my favourite houses. Simple easy minimal and beautiful.
The ones where the person talking is the one who designed and built the place or things are my favourites 😌.
This house is so beautiful. One of the most lovely houses you have filmed, thank you.
Absolutlely gorgeous!
His niece is very lucly (also, it makes me very curious what beautiful home he himself lives in), and I love that they both truly love and appreciate all the surrounding trees!
The house has a wonderful interaction with the trees.
It's a great design, I would love a home like this! ❤
Amazing , perfect wear on the wood . I really like the open concept . Great design . Thank You for the tour !
Amazing design and execution. So simple yet you can see how much work went into it. By far one of my favourite homes 👍🏾🇬🇧💙
I love everything about this video. The politics the aesthetics the do it yourselfness. All of it.
Great sense of design and execution of his vision
Enjoyed this one especially. So much craftsmanship. Open layout, but didn't seem impersonal or austere. Felt like a real warmth in the house. Not entirely sure how that came over on video, but it did.
that is one happy cat to live in this house, plenty of wood to scratch its claws on. Lovely house!
I live these mini road trip clips in your videos. Thanks for sharing so much beautiful views with us 🙏🙌
Wow! It’s the same guy who has the Artist apartment. That’s my favorite video and space!
These kind of homes are my favorite
Cypress was a nice choice. A nod to Lloyd-Wright here.
Love the open plan. Living room space appeals.
Adore the Big windows.
Adore this video and this house! Much love from another wooded corner of NJ.
Love everything you film Kirsten! MUST FINALLY THANK YOU!!!😊
As a passionate, non conventional “builder” (dirt jumps, pools, skateparks) living as a corporate America carpenter, this man is inspirational! He was very honest about “diy” because of cost, but unlike modern YT, who act like labor was free, because they “diy”, he never shied away from explaining how labor intense the project has been, case in point, it’s not all the way completed! Modern interneters and the whole “diy”= free labor cost, is the stupidest thing I see online, which is saying a lot! One thought after seeing this ….. **There are many structures that have been built unsafe, so “building codes” were a good thing, however what started as a means of safety and protection from hack builders/corner cutters has now tied our hands crippling all creativity, originality and building/craftsmanship as an art, so what we have created is another “quadrant, corporate, box of manufactured garbage! And taken craftpersonship and killed it for corporate greed, corrupt policy makers and the loss of all “craftspeopleship” art building as creative influence!
Aww this brought me back. I miss living in CT and driving through the upstate NY
I love this channel. Thank you so much for taking us to these unique places and letting the owners/creators tell their story.
This one is particularly inspiring because it's in a similar climate to where I live, and I'm planning to build a home using some of these ideals.
This house grew from the ground in to a work of art. Incredible!!!!!
Tim did an amazing job… He stayed true to his vision and worked around obstacles. I bought the house with my ex-husband and we installed massive beams in our 15 foot ceilings by ourselves. Building a home from the ground up teaches you so much you never learn anywhere else in life. Something to understand about trees is that they can be managed to live hundreds of years. That of course is in the absence of severe damage by pests, lightning, etc. Most trees start to break up because of leveraged weight that rips off limbs and then rot starts in to the stem. It’s likely that maple tree if trimmed properly could’ve lasted at least twice as long.🌲
2 minutes in and I love it already. The way it completely blends with the tree trunks is lovely.
Edit: love it even more having completed this video. Great build and it FEELS good
Wouldn’t it be something if we found out she lives in a cooler house then all of the people she has covered over the years!
It is amazing the talent some people have. It is beautiful. 🌻
What a wonderful and well-built home.
Such a beautiful, homely space. All the design elements meld so calmly into one but with all the quirk and style. Well done Tim!
It's absolutely gorgeous, all the stunning woodwork, the light coming in from all sides, the kitchen, the furniture, it all blends beautifully. So peaceful and tranquil - it's Paradise.
i love this house!!! the guy is an artist.
You can tell he's very design sensitive. You don't have Noguchi fixtures and Alvar Aalto Chairs without appreciating design. Awesome story. Happy it's being lived in!
Pretty sure this is my favorite
A stunning & well-lived-in ‘nature box’. Wonderful 💮㊗️
I love it, who needs walls, beautiful!
Thanks Kirsten! Health and happiness!
I love how unassuming it is
Utterly wonderful.
This is probably one of my favorites, among many others. I love this space! I would happily live here! The simple elegance of wood and light and surrounding and ever-changing woodlands scenery would be a feast for the eyes. Tim Seggerman is just brilliant. Thank you again, Kirsten
This is one of the coolest houses (inside & out) that I've ever seen! Good for you! Even though it was quite a journey to finish it, I hope you feel proud of your work.
God, I would love to live there... to be IN the seasons as the light and foliage changes. I'm reminded of a NYC loft, my aunts live in loft studio broken into zones. And yes, a loft bedroom for guests would be most lovely!
