Built Bill Gates’ home, then his own dream bunk-studio

  • He designed Bill Gates' 66,000-square foot home and a 139-million-dollar Portland federal building, but James Cutler was just as inspired building an 8-by-10 shed/studio with his daughter in their backyard.
“Everything in this world has a nature - institutions, people, places… There are things that land will accept and other things it will not accept and stay whole. The bottom line of that is I felt that our job once we decided to work with the nature of things was those things take on a will. And our job is to reveal that will, that spirit, and amplify it if we can.”
Using the same footprint as the old tool shed they razed to make way for the cabin, Cutler and his 12-year-old daughter spent eight months pouring a concrete foundation and building the structure from rough-sawn Douglas fir.
The dwelling is both kids’ hangout/sleepover space and Cutler’s design studio where he spends 12 hours per day designing award-winning buildings around the world. For Cutler design isn’t about size or cost, but about listening to the spirit of a space or place.

My parents moved a lot when I was little, the one thing they all had in common was they were "cookie cutter," a trailer, an apartment, a Sears & Roebuck house and finally a brand new 3 bed, 2 bath brick house in a subdivision that was exactly like every other house. I used to say that I would live in a tree house or bus or lighthouse, just as long as it wasn't cookie cutter.
I have lived at the same address for over 40 years, we bought an old plantation house that was on the Mississippi River levee and had it cut up and moved. I spent the next 30 years fixing, papering, painting, and repainting it...always changing it but I still love it because it is one of a kind.

The man is free and his style and skills in terms of his passion are incredible and inspiring. I only hope to build as something close to the architecture he has built. What a master!

I always smile when I see you have a new video. I love your interviews with creators like Mr. Cutler who are always full of passion about their works and excited to reveal them to you and to us. I loved how he knew exactly how many seconds the elevator takes and how important it was for him to honor the beam, and his designs are wonderful.. Thumbs up.

Kirsten, you probably don't remember me, but I was a classmate of your sister's at Dartmouth. Someone I designed a house for a few years ago in Ketchum sent me this video because he said it reminded him of me. Flattering! James Cutler is cool. I first found your work when I was obsessed with the Extremadura house. I love your videos. Thank you.

Dear Kirsten, appreciate your work! This is my favorite "Dream home video", I was touched by James Cutler's love & connection to nature. James, you are an inspiring, humble genius. To add a bit, yes, trees, rivers, rocks, we are all living beings, our growth is interdependent, love, compassion & selfless giving keeps us live. James, thanks for your tour & Kirsten for taking the time & effort to bring this to us! Pradeep

And the Longevity he cultivates.... In Everything!

I love the way nature is incorporated into his buildings. I always admired the ivy growing up the building in Portland. I wish I could build a studio exactly like his.
