Two friends build home, end up Michelin & Pritzker awarded

  • Olot (Catalonia, Spain, population 34,000), an old town in the midst of the Pyrenees' foothills, is well known for its forested volcanoes, country estates ("masías") & evergreen pastures, but when Fina Puigdevall talked to her former classmate Carme Pigem about revamping her restaurant Les Cols plus building her new house, neither of them could have imagined that, later on, the former would become a celebrated Michelin-starred chef, and the latter a Pritzker-prize-awarded architect.
    Puigdevall grew up in Les Cols, her family's 15th century masia. In 1990, in an attempt to save it from development, she opened a restaurant in the former stables downstairs. With no formal culinary training, she worked her way to two Michelin stars by 2010 (which she has held since).
    In 2000, she hired Pigem and RCR architects to open up the space to the outdoors: they designed a light/water cube in the kitchen and a huge glass wall framing the apple orchard and chicken run. The result is a dining experience that feels immersed in the outdoors.
    When Puigdevall wanted to expand her own home - a former mill straddling a creek - to accommodate her family of five, RCR Architects told her they wouldn't touch the original structure, but proposed something completely new in the middle of the former corn fields. What they dubbed "Horizon House" is a corten steel structure carved into the hill. Large walls of glass can be opened to allow the fields - now planted with native crops like buckwheat- to enter the home.

    1. Just because there is no "Live. Love. Laugh" wall tattoo it doesn't mean it cannot bring joy to people living in it.
    2. Some people don't aspire to "cozy". A home is a home. Simple as that.

      I find it ugly and cold and would never want to live in such a structure. But they seem quite happy and I have no problem with that. It's true that people have different aesthetic tastes and it's very personal. Even though it's not for me, I do find it interesting to see what other people enjoy and therefore found the video worthwhile. Still, it's odd to put up this sort of video in a public forum and then complain when people react to it based off of their own personal aesthetic.

      Aesthetics aside, the space has HORRIBLE ACOUSTICS every room is a reverberation chamber & it's suboptimal for human habitation - unless the architect was deaf... The deaf architect should have realised that it's not a house for deaf people...

    • @gnarbeljo8980
      @gnarbeljo8980 2 года назад +2

      The music room did seem like nobody had even thought of the acoustics, and *very* small. There are many aspects of drama I’d not be comfortable with in a house (like intentional chiaroscuro or contrasting effect of totally dark very narrow corridors leading to empty spaces with a zoomed view effect) but I appreciate they love exactly that, and that everything here is so intentional and all you have to do to acess all the stuff, bits and bobs etc is open a wall panel; never a need to spend energy on matching items and designed household things.
      I have a bit of claustrophobia and fear of heights (not huge but there sometimes) and am a sunlight lover. The effect created architecturally activated both those feelings, althouth it had all the windows and was underground not on a height. An even though there was all that light it felt too much like a house in the shadows for my instincts. I find all this interesting. Thrilling place for sculptural exibitions as it’s a total play with special perception.
      Just not for me for longer than a few hours.
      All the straight lines, hard materials, even the slightest hint of softness, intimacy like the fabric rectangle of a bed hidden away. Nature at a distance. Like something you look at, not interact with.
      Serious and cerebral.
      Not without definate beauty of an unusual kind.
      Fascinating!

    This is so elevated. So minimal. So connected with nature. No frilly decor or handles.
    I am blown away by how calming and tranquil this home
    Is. Exactly like she said, a place to isolate & connect with nature without the work. A place where time slows.
    We live off grid and our reality is so much hard work, dirty, inconvenient. And so isolated from everything.
    With such a lifestyle my mind is anxious. Always thinking about stuff that would make my life easier, less tiresome, more structured and just easier.
    This place is the answer.
    Thanks for sharing x

      It's called rotational grazing in farming. It's better for the animals since they are less susceptible to disease. It's better for uniformity of the grounds because the animals are not eating randomly around the field. The plants are able to rest and form deeper root systems which increases nutrient density of the plants since the animals are strategically quartered off from eating in certain areas.

    Such a beautiful setting in the countryside with the cows, and an opportunity to have so many windows and light coming in. The house is interesting from the outside but the inside is just the opposite of cozy. Too stark and hard, too dark. The sunken girls' rooms with huge windows at the end really could have been made like cozy little nests but instead they looked prison-like.

  • @13janvi
    @13janvi 3 года назад +6

    People saying it looks like a prison may not realise that this house is designed to experience the vistas of the outside rather than the interior spaces of a common “house”
    I think it is brilliantly designed putting sense into bringing the outside in the inside.
    The form of the house also is so well hidden that nature grows around it, the cows for example are not intimidated by the built form thus they come there to feed.
    It is an experimental, experiential home not suited for everyone.

      I think you're onto it. The lack of "something" inside, as most people are commenting on, is precisely what lends a greater sense of presence to that which is outside. When there is nothing within, your gaze is naturally directed to where it is best used: the natural world. I think a bit more time spent filming from the vantage point of a tired person sitting down inside the house would have better demonstrated the effect you are describing than the more traditional architectural filming seen here.

I love color and have a pretty cluttered space, but I'd LOVE to be able to close it all away and have a very non-distracting, empty workspace that I can enjoy in between projects/work. I like this a lot, especially how connected to nature it is. There's not a bunch of distracting chotskis and design. My biggest complaint is lack of artificial light, which is clearly an intentional decision.
