  • Today on Architectural Digest we visit Joshua Tree in California to tour the awe-inspiring Kellogg Doolittle Residence. The sensational build was designed by organic architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg and his protegee John Vugrin in the 1980s taking over 20 years to complete. Upon first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking this property was a living creature; the magnificent structure appears skeletal with 26 cast-concrete pieces fanning out in resemblance of vertebrae. An art piece in and of itself, it is no wonder this unique space is considered one of Kellogg’s greatest masterpieces.

The problem(s) with architecture and building like this is sustainability, but not in the environmental-impact sense. The sustainability problem that this house, for example, faces is that, once the architect, this interior designer, and whomever else that worked in this house retires and/or passes away, who is going to know how to sustain and maintain this house? If something breaks, like the plumbing, how are they going to fix it behind 2 feet of pressed rock?
This is not to say this house was poorly made (quite the opposite, actually), but it is to legitimize why there are “so many modern houses” that are “boring, like blocks.”

I don't know why. But this house makes me emotional. I remember having a dream as a child about a house in the desert, maybe Arizona or Palm Springs, and the house was interwoven and displaced by large boulders, and the master bedroom had a glass interior wall, like a gallery, and inside was the master bed built into the rocks, with a clear water stream making a moat between the bed, and the exterior wall, and double-glass doorway of the master suite.
The way the sun and the shadows played off the natural curvature of the buildings, archways, and hallways, some which were semi open-air breezeways will never be forgotten to me.

my friends and I had an art show in 2021. it was incredible to be able to spend a couple days just taking in all the details of this place, honestly it would take me months if not years to see all the intricate beauty that John meshed into this place. Thanks to Scott and Keiko and Carl for making this possible!

the location of the house is simply fantastic. the house itself reminds me of an archaeological dig site where dinosaur bones can be seen everywhere.

No words to describe the house. It's primal and feels like a mitachondrial womb; it feels futuristic and beyond human understanding. I have never seen anything so perfectly conflicted.

This wonderfully surprising house that uses the materials of the earth that time has created offers so many visual gifts that are simply astonishing. The rocks incorporated into it and the fossil designs are magical. As a hiking desert rat and rock hound, I absolutely love it!

Absolutely epic, never seen such a coherent sense of design carried out over a whole building like this. The blend of materials, surfaces, shape, texture, colour is so magical within its setting, like a treasure box lost by a giant in a rock garden. The challenge in linking such eccentric shapes together is a masterpiece of engineering and all kudos to the builders and artisans who put it together to such dazzling effect. I first became enraptured about architecture after seeing a documentary about Bruce Gough, so thrilled to find another visionary to look at and discover and what a treat to have John Vugrin give us such an intimate and informed insight into how it came about. Fabulous stuff!

Only an architect who has never cleaned his own house would be able to create this monstrosity. It's beautiful now, but living in it would be a nightmare.

There’s a Gaudi-like feeling to this space. It’s like looking through a microscope of enlarged cell-like structures- even though the materials are of stone glass and metal, there is movement and flow. LOVE

what amazes me is how long they've been working on this! really goes to show a house is as much a living creature as the people in it. it's an ongoing project that takes a lot of love & labour before creative visions are fully realised.
