Agree! If you watch videos on American ' Mansions' one sees how lots of money combined with bad taste and little personality results in modern ugliness. For a fraction of the building cost of some of those monstrosities one would go a long way in restoring this beautiful Chateau.

@@robertrotterdam9 I doubt that is true. Putting up a new build is likely considerably cheaper. The problem with houses this old is that they were built for the ultra-rich at a time when labour was far less costly than it is today. These houses and gardens required a significant number of staff to run and maintain them. And you had really significant technological changes with respect to heating and lighting, etc that these houses were not designed for. By the early 20th Century they had what was then modern plumbing and electrical wiring installed haphazardly. Fifty years later that was all at the end of its life and a huge cost to replace. Insulation is another big issue. I have friends who live in semi-rural France and the French people where they live think the British who come and restore tumbledown old houses and barns are totally insane. The locals much prefer to live in a new build that has been built using the latest technology.

I'm not going to say they are right or wrong to do this, they choose to put their money into preserving a piece of history and arguably art. But for me, if I had money, it would not go into this. It's just a large house on a large property that houses no one. I would rather have torn it down and built multiple smaller houses meant to house those in lower incomes. Or buy a lot of food for those starving. I understand that can do both, maybe they did. But I wouldn't idolize them as the rich generally only look to keep enriching themselves at others expense

If you search for architectural preservation US you’ll find those. I know of many in the Northeast but there are those preserving places far older than the 17th century. bro the us is filled with old stuff. i don't know where in the midwest you must live for it to be devoid of any old buildings. come to dc or honestly any city in the north east. even towns that no one knows about outside of the state has beautiful historic buildings. leesburg va, york pa, elicott city md, corning ny, etc. we're the 4th largest country in the world, there's a lot to explore outside of your front porch.

@@lightningstrike4680 I am not a man. I stand by what I said. I am a retired interior designer and know antiques very well. Where are all the 18th century structures in NYC (Manhattan in particular - where I used to live)? One of the reasons that DC has more older buildings is due to the building code which forbids the skyscrapers that NYC has built. I grew up on the Gold Coast of Long Island now live in New England. I've seen perfectly restored 18th century homes bulldozed because someone wanted to build a McMansion in its place (New Canaan, CT). My uncle was an architect and I grew up in a mid-century modern house that was sided in redwood. Redwood! It was bulldozed and a McMansion built in its place. That was in Oyster Bay Cove on Long Island. My family built and owned an Adirondack camp for 114 years and we sold that in 2017. Thankfully, the new owner restored it rather than tearing it down (it needed lots of work and was in a remote location).

@@yankeedoodledarling9232 bruh the 18th century? america was only a country for 24 years, with 8 of them being spent fighting. we didn't even make the louisiana purchase til the 19th century. not to mention we were a poor crown colony with a very low capacity to create any kind of quality masonry work outside of city or religious projects and manors. Also manhattan had a fire rip through the island during 1776. if you're looking for ancient colonial era homes then they wouldn't be in a city anyways. it wouldn't be another 50 years when the northern industrialists would reach a similar level of influence and power held by the farm land owners. if you want to find buildings of architectural significance from any era, then follow the wealth. 18th century america was primarily an agrarian economy so look for manors out there.

Where did the time go? Into hard work, joys, disappointments, and so many hard-won successes! And now the Chateau lives again. Is it just me, does she know how much you care? how hard you work? I feel she is leaning into you like a stray that has been found and loved.
To sit here and quietly watch this journey has been nothing short of pleasure and an honor for me. Through the tough times and the best you two have pushed on and it gives me such hope for not only the future of Purnon, but hope for our planet. That there ARE people who care.
You must know by now how much I also care about you two wonderful people who have taken on this incredible challenge and brought us all along! A million thanks!
Sending love, strength and hugs! ❤ B in Chicago

    Hello from West Virginia USA
I've been watching this historic restoration for about a year now. Sleeping beauty is starting her slow wake, she is absolutely gorgeous. I'm in awl of this huge undertaking that you two incredible people have started. I can't wait each week to see what new discovery or new room..or what's been finished..lovvvvvvvveeeee all of the antiques that she has kept. And just all the different directions of what needs done next. Hat off to you both. Know that West Virginia here watches every week..

Château de Purnon, located in the Vienne region of France, was purchased in 2020 by an Australian couple, Tim Holding and Felicity Selkirk. The cost of acquiring the 105-room 18th-century château was approximately €1 million. However, due to decades of neglect, the estate was in critical condition, and extensive renovations were necessary to save the structure from further deterioration.
The renovation costs are significantly higher, estimated to reach several million euros. The most urgent repairs involved restoring the château's roof and facades, which were in a dire state. The renovation aims to fully restore the château to its former glory, but the project is expected to span many years, requiring both substantial financial resources and dedicated effort. Tim and Felicity are funding the restoration through personal means, heritage programs, and fundraising efforts.
The restoration journey has garnered attention from the media and heritage enthusiasts, with the couple documenting their progress and the challenges they face in this ambitious project.

Thank you for putting your money, sweat, and tears on the line to persevere the culture of Western Civilization. These structures were built with blood, but there is still amazing beauty, history, and soul to them.
