    There are 45,000 castles in France, unfortunately, it is very difficult for us to renovate and maintain such a large number of properties. Thank you so much for coming to France to help us preserve this heritage.

    I know how much it costs to save a minor chateau. This is a national treasure chateau! Big difference! Many were big plantation houses, French style with farms that supported them.
    Then there are chateaus like yours. Ultra rich people’s homes. I would never attempted such a project as I have close friends who divorced over way smaller Reno’s.
    I hope through the government and grants you will get the money you need, over time, off course to save this “Real” chateau. I admire you being able to break it into smaller bites.
    That in itself is a talent! I won’t live long enough I’m afraid to see it finished. But I wish you all the very best!

      Yes, Chateau de Gudanes in the Pyrenees is a case in point. After five years still no restoration of the facade but plenty of gushing about the chabby chique crumbling interior. All by rich trendy people who think its all so elegant in its decaying state.

It will take a colossal amount of money to maintain it, but with the restoration at least the next holders/residents (we all residents in this thing called life...here for a "short" while & to the earth we return) will be getting it in great restored condition.

    The outbuildings could be renovated first and turned in guest cottages that people could rent for the weekend, thus generating some income for the renovation of the main house. The remnants of wallpaper and fabric could be also a source of revenue, their designs could be licensed and reproductions could be manufactured and sold under the license agreement to designers or directly to the public.

    So, you need labour's. I know a few veterans who could be taken off the streets of the country near their. They only look for a roof over their head and some simple work. What a way to renovate a gardeners house and save a vet. Think about it. Good for both.

    The garment ... emotional 🤍 ... as are the letters. Imagine a global effort to restore our collective past - these precious buildings and ruins. Transformation and healing comes of it. Such a different pathway to politics (I had to say it - Australian here - however moving to Europe too). Your story here, accentuated by your beautiful choice of music, is so touching. Yes your lives are the restoration - ongoing - and I would too. The idea of passing on is comforting - to family, community and France. A legacy. I hope to secure two properties in Slovenia that will need restoration. I watch you, and others, with much respect. Of course I look forward to visiting in the not too distant future. As a fashion historian i was thrilled to see the fragile garment you found in the fabric room and evem though i didn´t see it first hand i can already tell how old it is :D
    the shape of the sleeves, the waist form and the long down dropping shoulder line indicate that it was made between 1840 - 1860. worn over a bell shaped gown with a full skirt over several layers of starched petticoats if not a crinoline hoop skirt (but these came late in 1856 - 1869ish) ... the lady might have combined it with a spoon bonnet and a silk parasol.
    if you google ladies fashion of the time I´m sure you will come across some fabulous fashion plates in which you can find similar garments. (here is a thought: take it to a tailor and ask to make a copy of the pattern - tailors can craft you a wearable replica for display or special occasions 🤩)

    • @treytrip8
      @treytrip8 10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes! Late 1860s, I think. It looks like a bodice and over-skirt which would have had a coordinating underskirt worn over a crinoline and/or early bustle. I collect 1850s-1860s clothing, so this was especially exciting to see!

    You should have the suitable oak trees logged and rough cut for the future use. It will take a couple years for them to season (air dry) so they can be used in the restorations to come. Stone walls can be restored enough to keep them from failing. Many many holes in the dice that need fingers to stop the leaks I'm sure. I admire your commitment and support you.

    Outstanding presentation on the connection between Château de Purnon and FOUR wars of the 19th and 20th centuries! You covered four wars! I especially appreciated your digging into the First World War. Many people would have stopped their research with, "The front was hundreds of miles away, so no impact," but Tim dug deep and learned about the military service of the son of the Marquis. The story about the war in Indochina was fascinating and eloquently described, the German newspapers from the summer of 1940 were extremely cool, and the story about the court martial of the soldier from the Franco-Prussian War will delight visitors to the Château for decades to come! Thank you for this information.

    When we asked what the plan was. I don't think we meant a plan like you described. It was more about what are the priorities. Obviously, the roof first. Then what? Will you want to do more interior rooms? More foundational work like electrical and plumbing like you mentioned. Or saving the stables and chapel?

    • @m.m.6670

    • @rachbryant
      @rachbryant Год назад +1

      @M. M. I felt they had made that clear. Maybe i haven't been clear. I meant a list of what ideally THEY want to prioritise. They are in charge of starting the investigative work after all. The timeline after that of course cannot be known. But surely they know as an overview what their priorities are and where they will put their budget first?

      It appears that most of the historic buildings are being restored by people who are not French, which is a little bizarre but might be because they realise that their time has passed and they are just money pits to both restore and run in the long term. It is also peculiar that so much "State" money can be spent on an historical property for two people to inhabit, I realise that examples of these should remain but maybe the ones in better condition, however as this is being done in keeping with its original intent it will be a worthwhile addition and the present owners seem pleased they can drive it down that route, and it is stressful and hard work. On other RUclips channels they have elected to pay for the repairs themselves so as not to have to follow the strict codes if you have a grant, whilst some compromises have been taken, generally the houses have been made fit to face a better future in the long term, but not with all its original features restored. In conclusion I would have knocked it down and built a present day "village" in a traditional "rural" style around the area of the chateau and it's outbuildings, say about 100 houses which could house 200 people and charged a monthly cost for upkeep of the surrounding land which would remain as land, for no cost to the tax payer, but I applaud the endeavour of the two people who are carrying out the restoration rather than leave it fall into disrepair further which is the greatest tradegy, and I suppose I am a bit of a Philistine and I'm not French!??

    So beautiful. Just subscribed to your channel. I've watch a few of these Chateau utube channels. The thing that just breaks my heart 💔 is when new buyers of Chateaux is they remodel it ulta modern😥💔. Instead of restoration its gut wrenching 💔 to see other utube Chateau buyers do that. To each is own , I get that but it's like more of destruction of Chateau rather than restoration. So glad you've restoring it to its original beauty 💕 ❤️ 😍 . Even period reproductions a fakey high boy😘 is better than some steel and pink glass or ulta modern bookshelves😥🤮

    Australians are great swimmers. They invented the Australian crawl, (aka the crawlstroke or freestyle), which we see Tim demonstrating in the pool. Both Tim and Felicity had excellent racing starts.
