You didn't have this question, how do you plan to furnish all the rooms in such a large Chateau? You certainly are brave to take on such a hugh project that will take more than your life time to complete. Best wishes, Kathy USA 🇺🇸
Horses will definitely be include because you two always make your dreams come true. Timing will have to be properly adjusted as the progress goes forward.
This seems to me to be one of those special times when the right people have found the right place to do the right thing. It truly doesn't happen often but when it does the results are not only amazing but frequently beyond what you expect.
I cannot help but think of that movie, "The Money Pit" - on steroids, for that chateau! That couple is like a dictionary definition of "courage" (to use the polite term usually associated with billiards). The dog, gazing out over the 1,000 some odd hectares, "They expect me to do this alone?"
Yup, happened to me as well. I have watched a number of these, but these two present it well. I hope your wish of getting married in the chapel comes true. ❤

Indeed. I expect many of us like the history to start, but when combined it with the original sorry state of the property drama then added. This, though, is the impersonal aspect that would hold only a few dedicated viewers. But when coupled with your genuine presentation style, it just works for this. It gives me a sense that Purnon is in good hands, yet you are both so human about the fears, frustrations and joys of such a journey. Whatever ... it works. I agree, I started watching out of curiosity and have stayed due to your passion for the chateau her history the remarkable craftsmanship of the stone masons, roofers and the restoration steps to bring her back to life. ❤ more people should subscribe to enjoy your journey.
You got a great deal on the chateau and land. In 2009 I purchased a French chateau on 9000 hectares for $2.7M USD. The chateau took 16 years to restore, it’s about 98% done. I did not work on it myself, I hired a company to manage the process and they hired the various artisans and construction companies. I live in the US, so I flew in to check on progress every 4-6 months. Buying and owning a chateau like this is not for the faint at heart, I pay about a million in total annual costs.
If you don't mind me asking, that's a million in upkeep annually AFTER the 98% major works have been done, or has it cost you a million annually on average since purchase to restore to 98%, so 16 mil over 16 years?
You from Australia and came to save our history... What can i say..... I have no words available. It's history restoring by you. Thank god we have you.
@@margaretmacneill3133French people can barely survive, they are taxed to death, 40 years of socialism and the French society and their lalaland is collapsing.
As a French, I wanted to thank you for bringing back to life one of ours many abandoned châteaux and trying to make it as it was before. We are very happy to see foreigners coming in France to restore castles and enjoying French life. There is so much work to do and even if some French families try to maintain these castles, there is so much work to do. It is a pity to see some castles falling apart, so thank you very much again!

I came here to say the exact same thing! The two of them are fantastic at the questions and answers! They're so perfectly suited. He needs to wake up before he loses this beautiful lady! Her favorite part is the CHAPEL! Don't let her wait to be married to you!
I restored a Chateau decades ago, it was classified "Monument Historique" (without my real estate agent telling me/lying), so yes, I received around 50% of costs, but everything had to go through so much administrative work, and they would choose who could work on the property (only a few companies approved). Basically, the cost was multiplied by close to 4, minus their 50%, I spent double what I anticipated which bankrupt me! Good luck to you! Also, the fact of having Internet, Social Media today can help raising funds! Château du Theil was not classified and they chose to restore it... to convert it to a hotel, I don't like their interior design but, it works! I will never buy again a classified property, and admire the challenges you've take on! Congratulations!
Did the costs multiply by 4 because you were forced to use the approved companies who may have increased their margins because they had a captive market. If that was the case, it may have been better to forgo the 50% grant and gain the flexibility if you were allowed.
@@csjrogerson2377 I am afraid he's choice was to pay x4 with -50% or if he does not like it: x4 with -0%. Historic venues restoration required official gov historical overseer anyways.
Taking on a project this size is sheer madness. Therefore you are to be praised for apparently being feerless having taken on the restoration of this icon of french cultural heritage. From my perspective you both deserve a medal the size of a frying pan for doing so!!! Keep on the good work for sake of saving history!!!

Thank you so much for saving this Chateau. I have a degree in history and whenever I see an architectural wonder like this it hurts my soul knowing these are not replaceable and watch them abandoned or fall in. Thanks so much for the courage and persistence in restoring this.
Your project surpasses others for several reasons however the talent of your artisians puts it in a league of it's own. Your hearts combined with their artistry could produce nothing less than magnificence.

Thank you for your wonderful message. We're particularly grateful that you acknowledge our incredible artisans - without them, saving Chateau de Purnon would be impossible.
If you can afford the artisans of course. However, many chateau owners don't have the finances that this couple have.

Hi Norman, as we explain in this video, raising the funds to keep the restoration of Chateau de Purnon progressing is an ongoing process. Everything from our RUclips and Patreon channels, the book we have published and the reclaimed slate tiles from the roof that we now fashion into drinks coasters helps to keep this journey going. Having affirmed that, Amy's original message was to emphasise the incredible talent of our artisans - a point that is always well made here at Purnon.
Well the only thing that I can add is this, you are the perfect couple for this chateau, your drive and ambition is exactly what it needs to be rebuilt well done.
An ongoing heroic effort to save the past that Every living European should applaud and admire. You are true heroes! It will be a thrill to follow your journey.

We haven't seen your nephew's place but does it require a monumental multi-year restoration overseen by a heritage architect?? He may have got the bargain after all!
Yep- I’d much rather live in France than in Australia at this point, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford to buy here now and I know my kids won’t be able to, the housing prices are obscene and the quality of modern Australian built houses is utter, utter crap. I’d much rather live in France, I’ve loved France since childhood.

We quite enjoy the involvement from the DRAC team at Poitiers. Despite the reputation that they sometimes have, we have found them to be very responsive, enthusiastic and very practical in solving problems. We have actually extended the heritage protection zone at the chateau to cover several other important outbuildings and elements of the park. That, too, was an interesting process from which we learnt a great deal. But we appreciate that this is not necessarily the sentiment of all!
The satisfaction of restoring this gorgeous place can only be amplified if you reproduce. Loving an object, a dog, a horse, family, each other, is nothing. Please pause and do not miss the opportunity to share your greatest love possible for each other with children.

Its amazing to see the building and architecture of our history... It has helped me to solidify the idea that humanity has not advanced in all sectors. I believe we have regressed. a really thorough and insightful video (albeit, whilst many may want to understand the overall costs. -and there is value in putting that in context -I do think it’s a rather cheeky question to ask… but you both are graciously, patiently and generously forthcoming in setting out your response). To me, the most important aspect of understanding the scope of your work is the “playing it forward”-that you realise it will never be done within your lifetime, but there’s a much bigger picture at play that you are working towards… such an important lesson…, You see it often when people are planting trees when they know they will never sit under its’ boughs… but someone will in the future… you all have bitten off a “very big tree”- 🌳bravo as ever to you both… I am driving by in the next couple of weeks finally having the elections behind me! All the best, Karen / Reading
I saw on another recent tour you gave, the original kitchen in the basement. Oh my goodness!! I felt like I was watching a period piece movie, with the ghosts of the chefs, cooks, servants busy about cooking up feasts for the family, their guests and the many incredible meetings and parties they had. That kitchen has been through revolutions, elections, births, marriages, the rise and fall of many monarchies and 100s of years of history ❤❤ Even though the original kitchen’s location, in the basement, is not practical for contemporary lifestyles, I hope you renovate that kitchen to its former glory for not just historical reasons but because the kitchen was truly the heart of that chateau. Nothing happened without that kitchen and the hub of secrets, historical energy and French culture is wrapped up in that one space. On a monetary note, imagine the future tours and potential events being held at the chateau If there was actually an original, renovated working commercial kitchen?! Architectural Digest be calling!!! People “ask you a lot about what your own kitchen plans are” because everyone wants to see the kitchen! Kitchens tell us sooo much about a culture and generation. It would be a massive letdown to not raise up and honour that kitchen again 🙏🙏🙏

@@medstud the restoration cost $26M USD and $1M total running cost annually. If I restored it today, the cost would likely exceed $60M.
You from Australia and came to save our history... What can i say..... I have no words available. It's history restoring by you. Thank god we have you.
Thank you for your wonderful message.
We always see videos of Brits or foreigners saving French chateaux, I wonder if there are no French people saving their own heritage🤔🤔
@@margaretmacneill3133French people can barely survive, they are taxed to death, 40 years of socialism and the French society and their lalaland is collapsing.
@@margaretmacneill3133 A few are, just not as well publicized. Chateau Dompierre Northwest of Tours is an example.
thank god we have their MONEY more like it
As a French, I wanted to thank you for bringing back to life one of ours many abandoned châteaux and trying to make it as it was before. We are very happy to see foreigners coming in France to restore castles and enjoying French life. There is so much work to do and even if some French families try to maintain these castles, there is so much work to do. It is a pity to see some castles falling apart, so thank you very much again!
Thanks for your message - we're thrilled you're enjoying our journey.
This is the best Chateau Q&A that I’ve seen. You were well prepared and every question was answered in an interesting and thoughtful way. Well done to fellow Aussies. ❤
Thank you! We're thrilled you enjoyed this episode.
@@csjrogerson2377 Yes, and no, I had not many choices on approved companies!
@@csjrogerson2377 I am afraid he's choice was to pay x4 with -50% or if he does not like it: x4 with -0%.
Historic venues restoration required official gov historical overseer anyways.
@@csjrogerson2377 The goverment decides a buildings classification, and what is considered a historical monument, not the owner.
@ Agreed, but I never mentioned who decides the classification and it has no bearing on my comment. So, what is your point?
Taking on a project this size is sheer madness. Therefore you are to be praised for apparently being feerless having taken on the restoration of this icon of french cultural heritage. From my perspective you both deserve a medal the size of a frying pan for doing so!!! Keep on the good work for sake of saving history!!!
Thank you. We're thrilled that you enjoyed this episode!
Ts 18:45 the technical term " cloister" sounds English. Was it an English device?
You mean the people they pay with money?
Thank you for letting us be part of your journey!
It's our joy to share this journey with interested people from across the globe. Thanks for your message.
Well the only thing that I can add is this, you are the perfect couple for this chateau, your drive and ambition is exactly what it needs to be rebuilt well done.
Thanks for your message.
An ongoing heroic effort to save the past that Every living European should applaud and admire. You are true heroes! It will be a thrill to follow your journey.
Welcome to our adventure - we're thrilled you're following.
Y'all are crazy in the best possible way.
Thank you! High praise indeed!
This is without question the most beautiful chateau I have ever seen. The grounds are breathtaking and the buildings are magnificent. I am greatly enjoying every single video you’ve produced. My wife and I are so deeply moved by the grandeur, beauty and immensity of what you two are tackling and we are stuck to the television on each episode. Thank you for sharing the journey with us.
It is our pleasure. Thank you for your wonderful message. We can't wait to share more of our adventure.
What I love about this video is the clear passion you have not only for the project but for each other as well. You are talking to each other, not the camera, and it feels SO refreshingly real. Excited to see where you both take this in the years to come!
Thanks for your message... we're thrilled that you're following our journey.
Worst than a yacht, a hole in the water you pour money into........its sheer madness! The upkeep, the fixing up, the running of it, you two are like nothing I have ever seen. Just so crazy! Yet I so love your challenge and drive!
Well, we're glad that you enjoyed learning more about our adventure!
I'd have that over a yacht any day🤷🏼
It’s like she was waiting for the right people to save and love her. She will be spectacular when restored.
We hope we can honour the care and beauty that inspired her original construction. Thank you!
Just the fact that you’re taking such care with her restoration shows that you’re honoring her history!!!
Thanks for your messages. It's wonderful for our morale to know that people around the world are enjoying our journey.
LOVED these questions and answers. Thank you for taking the chateau on.
Thank you! We're thrilled you enjoyed it.
How amazing would it be to restore the original kitchen and bakery and use them today, showcasing historic local recipes. I can imagine going to view the house and getting lunch and then a sweet treat to take with me whilst touring the grounds. ❤
Thank you for taking time out of your busy days to chat with us ❤️
It was our pleasure. We're thrilled that people from across the globe are interested in our journey.
I so appreciate seeing how thoughtfully you have considered the wise words of your heritage architect. I think we can miss a lot by obsessing over the final product rather than appreciating all the small moments.
Thank you. You have captured his sentiment exactly.
You two are so articulate and sooo easy to watch and listen to. Plus you come across as the most adorable and genuinely 'in love' couples on here. Also, you seem like the right couple to restore this, you're not just a pair of financially loaded people with money to throw at it, it seems that you truly want the best for this building. Best of luck, I'm rooting for you. 🍀🤞🏼😁
Thanks for your very kind message. It is certainly a project of passion that has transformed our lives.
❤️
740,000 Euros for the whole property(including 60 acres) and my nephew paid $AU 400,000 for an empty, postage stamp sized lot on the Sunshine Coast!
We haven't seen your nephew's place but does it require a monumental multi-year restoration overseen by a heritage architect?? He may have got the bargain after all!
Both propositions are "no goes" for me! That's why I bought a home outside of Atlanta for $US180,000. 😁
Very wise... best wishes to you!
@@Ninsidhe We bought our 4 bedroom home on .6 acre, outside of Atlanta in 2016 for $US180,000. At the time, it would have cost me $NZ800,000 to buy something similar in NZ, and I would still have to spend another $NZ100,000 to update it!
That chapel is beautiful. I hope its restored in a way it can continue to be a sacred space. 🙏 So awesome to hear its one of your favorite spaces on the estate
I concur. What a joy, on top of everything else, to have an exquisite space dedicated to spiritual transcendence. I was in tears during that part! May God bless you always.
I just wanted you both to know that your fellow chateau owners watch and support what you are doing as well. Keep up the great work ! Mark and Phillip - Chateau Avensac, Le Gers
Hi Mark & Phillip, thank you for your message. We're thrilled you're following our journey. We wish you every success as you work to save your beautiful chateau in the south of France. Best wishes, Tim & Flick
Tim and Flick, it is a pleasure to follow your journey. I also find that I feel very fortunate after watching one of your videos 😆 We are also Classé MH listed, but fortunately only exteriors including out buildings, terraces, and retaining walls. I don't think I could handle ABF involvement on the interiors !!! 😂😂😂 Mark
What I love the most is how much you adore each other and extend that love together to the château.
Thank you.
The satisfaction of restoring this gorgeous place can only be amplified if you reproduce. Loving an object, a dog, a horse, family, each other, is nothing. Please pause and do not miss the opportunity to share your greatest love possible for each other with children.
Wow! This is an amazing project. Very detailed explanation of your purchase and the restoration of this enormous project. God bless you both.
Thank you! Thrilled you enjoyed the Q&A!
Thanks! You two would win The Block for sure 😁
Ha! We'd take far too long! Thank you for your contribution towards our restoration of Chateau de Purnon - we're very grateful.
Guys this was a fabulous video that provided so much information about things I often wondered about. The hour flew buy and I now know much more about your beautiful chateau.
Thank you for your message. We're thrilled you enjoyed the episode.
Thank you for all these answers. GIves us much more insight, following you along your awesome journey.
Thank you for your message - we thrilled you're enjoying our adventure!
Tim is very well spoken and his explanation of the restoration and future plans was superb.
Thanks for your message - we're thrilled you found this episode informative.
The price you paid for all the buildings and the land I feel is a very good price, you couldn’t buy a building like that here in Australia for that amount. I know it needs an enormous amount of work and money to restore her. Thank you Flick and Tim for answering all those questions and we all know that the grand old lady is in very good hands . Go Aussie 🇦🇺
Thanks for your message. We're thrilled that you enjoyed this episode.
This beautiful old lady of France is in the hands of two people who truly love her which is evident in this very thorough and informative Q&A. Thank you so much for all that you are doing for the people of France and the world. It is very much appreciated and hopefully will bring many subscribers.❤️🙏
Thank you for your message. We're thrilled that people from across the globe are taking joy from our adventure.
What a lovely comment. As a French lady I agree 100%.
As a French woman, I am so grateful there are crazy people like this lovely couple out there who are saving our heritage. And I love that they have learned to speak French and seem involved in their local community and not just sticking to the Anglo bubble. Meanwhile, I dream of moving to Australia. Oh and they paid for their entire chateau + land + outbuildings the same amount I paid for a 4 bedroom house in the Alps. It's crazy.
Thank you for your message. We love our new life here. Our local community has welcomed us warmly. The people who are helping us on our adventure to save Chateau de Purnon are the most incredibly skilled artisans. Although we work hard, it's a project that brings us huge joy and satisfaction. Very best wishes as you pursue your dream to come to Australia - it's a beautiful country with warm and friendly people.
Thank god we have you. De Purnon is worth to save. So many other properties are forgotten. Decaying in time. France - in my knowledge - has 45 000 castles and palaces and upside manor houses, but most of them are crumbling.
It was really cool learning a little bit about the chateau’s heating and especially cooling system throughout the summer.
Thank you! We appreciate your ongoing interest in our journey.
An excellent introduction to so many aspects of this project that many of us weren’t aware of.
I have to say you are both wonderful ambassadors of Australia .
Thank you! We're thrilled that you enjoyed this episode.
Hello from South Africa. Bless you for taking the task on. Lots of us Old World Romantics still around to appreciate this Grand Royal Old Lady.
Thank you! We're thrilled you enjoyed the Q&A.
Great in-depth talk on this massive project! Thank you!
We're thrilled you enjoyed it. Thanks for your message.
My partner and I live in the US. We always find ourselves going for a drive, and looking at some of the old houses here in Maine that have fallen into disrepair. We wonder what these places looked like in their glory days, and what it would be like to buy and restore one. You guys have gained another subscriber here. It's wonderful knowing that there are people out there that are still willing to take a chance in reviving magnificent places like Chateau de Purnon. If the walls of such places could talk, could you imagine the story they would tell. Thank you for bringing life back to this amazing piece of history, and allowing us to take part in the journey.
Thanks for your message and welcome to our journey. We often say that the walls here at Chateau de Purnon can talk and if we just lean in and listen we can her whispering to us through the centuries. Perhaps a part of our journey is to share with others the stories and lessons she has for us all!
I certainly appreciate the frankness of your Q & A. Great job.
Thanks for your message - we're thrilled you found this episode informative.
Very interesting and informative video. Thank you for your honesty and openess.

The magnificence of your ambition knows no bounds. I applaud you in complete admiration.
Thank you for your message. We're thrilled you enjoyed the Q&A.
I love your interview and conversation style. It's very warm, easy, personable and informative. Thank you for your gift to the world of saving this gorgeous Chateau.

Absolutely fascinating! Purnon is so lucky you found her and are putting in so much love and pride in the restoration ❤
Thank you for your message!
The research and learning curve you must constantly face in this project is astouding and exciting. I should imagine you have found libraries and research facilities opening their doors to you because of the property you are restoring. The decorative and architectural history collections whose doors must be opening to you must be so fascinating. I'd love to hear more of any research or libraries you have used in sourcing information to restore different aspects.
Thanks for your message. Yes, a very steep learning curve. We have met with experts from several different fields in progressing our project. French wall paper experts, historians, heritage specialists... even an expert in bells from our region who came to inspect our inventory! We provide additional detail on many historical aspects on our Patreon platform where we post an exclusive weekly video. That content is a subscription-based service which also supports the restoration of Chateau de Purnon.
Brilliant job monetizing your project, without starving non-subscribers of the essentials. On top of everything else, you two seem to be model RUclipsrs!
Thanks!
Thank you! We really appreciate your support.

It would be Amazing to film a miniseries about the people who lived in this Chateau . The funds made could go through more restoration.
One of the most stunning properties I've ever seen. This is a restoration for humanity, not just the French. It would be a dream to actually come and see it.
Best of luck from Tasmania 💙

Your team of craftspeople are slowly bringing this old lady back to life. Together with your enthusiasm, the guidance of the architect she will surely return to her former glory.

Pretty wild, same price that I purchased my home for 😅. Don’t have the pocketbook or the madness to take on a project like this. This is incredible and I’ll be watching for years to come! Sincerely, thank you!
P.S. Voltaire was a bit wild 😂

Thank you ❤ where I live in Saone et Loire there are so many beautiful mansions and castles but the blinds are mostly closed because they are inhabited and we cannot even visit them. It is very sad to see the heritage slowly disappearing. Good luck with your project ❤ people might be annoyed it is owned now by foreigners but I think as long as it goes to people that love those places and try to give them back their former glory it does not matter at all 😊
Thank you for your message. The people here in our community have welcomed us very warmly. Previously the Chateau was closed and hidden. Now thousands of people can visit and see the estate and the works during Les Journees du patrimoine each September. And, of course, people around the world are watching these videos each week and celebrating the restoration of France's wonderful heritage.
A lifetime labor of love. The structures and land will live again, and that's wonderful. I hope you both have tremendous success and rewards for the beautiful work you're doing.
How beautiful and exciting to undertake. Would love to see it someday. Boy, if those statues could talk!?! And a chapel on the grounds ... just heaven to have that. Wishing you both the very best - your doggy too! 🙏🐕❤💫💥🌱🌍

Wow ❤ just Wow ❤
your channel popped onto my feed today and I'm so glad.
I have religiously watched all Chateau tv & yt shows for years and have become an armchair expert (insert sarcasm). I love your Aussie courage/trait of putting your money where your mouth is in taking on this magnifique vieille dame so, so, brave & committed.
Your genuine, pleasant & kind personalities mixed with your love of her will make this so easy to follow you.

Fabulous opportunity for a deep dive into some of the issues that have pricked our imagination in the reawakening of Chateau de Purnon. I hope you will consider a repeat of this format again in the near future. Fascinating details and perspectives from you both. You are a formidable team gaining traction and it is a joy to be on this journey with you. Allez! Allez! Allez! ❤👏👏👏♥️
Thanks Kirstie. We're thrilled you enjoyed it. We're sending you both all our love xxx
Inspired, necessary, & wondrous!!
I would love to come and help you on this project…. Historic restoration has been one major focus of my life… and this would be a crowning achievement!
Do you take on knowledgeable assistance, ever?
This was such a lovely video. Thank you for taking the time to answer so many interesting questions. There is no question that the right couple purchased this historic beauty and has saved her. I wish you both many years of joy and support while you continue on this amazing journey.
Thank you for your wonderful message. We're thrilled that you found this episode informative.
Its amazing to see the building and architecture of our history... It has helped me to solidify the idea that humanity has not advanced in all sectors. I believe we have regressed. Look at how beautiful buildings used to be. Every single detail paid a mind. Construction nowadays would likely wow the old timers with our technology...but sadden them with the quality of craftsmanship.
Thank you so much for answering all of these questions....it gives us so much more info about this wonderful restoration. Love it!
Thank you! We're thrilled that enjoyed this episode and found it informative.
Wow. You are amazing. I adore you guys. Such a lovely couple. What a breath of fresh air to RESTORE and not demolish. You are living my dream. It is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your journey so freely and glimpse back in history. The chateau & grounds are breathtaking. Bravo.
Thanks for your message Molly. We're thrilled you enjoyed our Q&A.
As a subscriber from the beginning, I truly appreciate your candor, and applaud your vision. I wish you both continued good health and the resources required to achieve your goals. And I look forward to following your journey. ❤
Thank you! We're thrilled that you've been here since the start. We're touched by your good wishes. Thanks for following our journey.
Love your passion for your Chateau and it’s restoration. Ten years ago we purchased a small apartment in Dijon ( we are a Melbourne couple)
It was called Villa Pernot, a a part of the Biscuit factory of 1860. We love the history of the factory and it’s beautiful building. Everything is the same externally, but is now apartments. We love collecting memorabilia about the factory..posters, advertisements, biscuit tins etc..
We do laugh when people ask us…Where is your Chateau? It’s nothing at all like a Chateau, but we love the history, like both of you. 🤗🤗🤗
Thanks for your message and for sharing your journey. Our very best wishes for your project in Dijon - we wish you every success!
It’s been an emotional high watching you both working away and guiding the progress with the architect. It was a great day for me when I found your RUclips page. Nothing but brilliant! ❤️🎉❤
Thank you! We're thrilled you're enjoying our journey!
Many thanks to you Aussie couple to throw so much love, labor and money into this heritage restoration !
Thank you! We're thrilled you enjoyed our Q&A.
History - wherever - is always worth to save. Big or small. You chose the big one. 😊😊
a really thorough and insightful video (albeit, whilst many may want to understand the overall costs.
That kitchen has been through revolutions, elections, births, marriages, the rise and fall of many monarchies and 100s of years of history ❤❤
Even though the original kitchen’s location, in the basement, is not practical for contemporary lifestyles, I hope you renovate that kitchen to its former glory for not just historical reasons but because the kitchen was truly the heart of that chateau.
Thanks for your message. We're thrilled you enjoyed seeing the original basement kitchen. We'll share more of our plans for this space when we come to restoring the basement.
