Indeed. I expect many of us like the history to start, but when combined it with the original sorry state of the property drama then added. This, though, is the impersonal aspect that would hold only a few dedicated viewers. But when coupled with your genuine presentation style, it just works for this. It gives me a sense that Purnon is in good hands, yet you are both so human about the fears, frustrations and joys of such a journey. Whatever ... it works. I wish I had the resources to post a sizeable donation, however I have no rich aunts. 😁

    •  Месяц назад +4

Hi Norman, as we explain in this video, raising the funds to keep the restoration of Chateau de Purnon progressing is an ongoing process. Everything from our RUclips and Patreon channels, the book we have published and the reclaimed slate tiles from the roof that we now fashion into drinks coasters helps to keep this journey going. Having affirmed that, Amy's original message was to emphasise the incredible talent of our artisans - a point that is always well made here at Purnon.

I don't think I could handle ABF involvement on the interiors !!! 😂😂😂 Mark

    •  24 дня назад +1

We quite enjoy the involvement from the DRAC team at Poitiers. Despite the reputation that they sometimes have, we have found them to be very responsive, enthusiastic and very practical in solving problems. We have actually extended the heritage protection zone at the chateau to cover several other important outbuildings and elements of the park. That, too, was an interesting process from which we learnt a great deal. But we appreciate that this is not necessarily the sentiment of all!

The kings and or Family who owned the Chateau must've been devoted to the Virgin Mary
...the large painting of Her embracing Jesus after He was taken down is the Mother of Sorrows, it also could be connected to a future devotion, The Purple Scapular (a french lady Marie Julie Jeheny, look her up).
...the Annunciation, when The Incarnation began.
Both of these paintings are bookends to an incredible life of Our Lady, Her fiat beginning to its consummation. The stained glass of St Joseph, beautiful and makes sense in that space. I cannot WAIT to see it restored. Its pure treasure💘
Traditional Latin Mass would've been said there with the white candle in the red candle holder alerting the people of the True Presence of Jesus Christ in the Tabernacle. The statues inside are definitely significant. The altar inside would be possibly facing east (you'd know with your compass) and as for the altar itself, would normally have relics of saints inside, you want to SAVE it, keep it. A bishop would have consecrated the chapel and one off the statues above the altar could be him? Theres MUCH to discover in your chapel.

I should imagine you have found libraries and research facilities opening their doors to you because of the property you are restoring. I saw a couple looking to buy a chateau that was fairly expensive considering and the owners told them that they had to spend over 200,000 to redo the roof quite quickly ! They of course backed out but many chateaux have this problem that the cost of a new roof can be as much as the cost of the purchase of the chateau or even more and that is before you do anything else. Stephanie Jarvis has been redoing the central heating at over 250k and restoring the chapel at another 300+K and that is after she spent already around 300+K on top of the price of the chateau that she purchased at the peak of the market. When finished the total cost will probably exceed the re-sale value of the property so it's all about passion these days.

    •  Месяц назад +5

The question of the true value of a chateau will always be partly determined by the costs required to restore and save it. It's not surprising that very old buildings designed by the most talented architects of their day and built at a cost of millions of euros in today's terms are very expensive to restore and maintain. Perhaps we can't save every single one of them, but with innovative approaches, hard work and the support of the government and private philanthropy we can save many of them for future generations. Thanks for your passion for French heritage.

The person you mentioned is receiving financial aid in her restoration yet leads patrons to believe she alone is responsible while asking for monies. The result is her life resembles that of a very wealthy person (which she was not) while still doing projects of enormous costs. Patrons donations are their own decision however it's a different opinion when doing so due to non truths.

@@amysimpson646 Turns out Stephanie is a friend and I know all about the donations that she receives but I also know how hard she workes doing almost daily vlogs and she has given jobs to many people in the property who are all happy with the set up. There are many who dislike her so I suggest just not watching her instead of spreading nonsense. Good luck.

a really thorough and insightful video (albeit, whilst many may want to understand the overall costs. -and there is value in putting that in context -I do think it’s a rather cheeky question to ask… but you both are graciously, patiently and generously forthcoming in setting out your response). To me, the most important aspect of understanding the scope of your work is the “playing it forward”-that you realise it will never be done within your lifetime, but there’s a much bigger picture at play that you are working towards… such an important lesson…, You see it often when people are planting trees when they know they will never sit under its’ boughs… but someone will in the future… you all have bitten off a “very big tree”- 🌳bravo as ever to you both… I am driving by in the next couple of weeks finally having the elections behind me! All the best, Karen / Reading

And what nationality are you theflown? What derogatory comment may we make of your kin? Australians are known for their hard work, open-mindedness and practical creativity, amonst other things. They are often belittled in the northern hemisphere because of their nations' history, and people forget that all the world is made up of immigrants who have heritage from many different places. At least Australia is one of those places in the world where people grow up believing that with application and forethought they can achieve interesting outcomes.

My brother lives near Béziers and there is also a big problem with heaps of mansions, châteaux, maisons de maître etc falling into disrepair. There are more than 3 million vacant houses in France. Especially when there are many quarrelling heirs, houses become ruins because selling is hard, old houses are really unpopular amongst the French, and the heirs often disagree. Old houses in villages were often large, built back to back, dark and badly isolated and had no garden.
All things modern French dislike. So, they move to newly built suburbs and their former house often remains empty. Unless a often retired foreigner can buy several neighbouring houses. They the demolish one to make it into a garden, strip the others and completely remake the houses.

    •  Месяц назад +2

This is the challenge for those countries with building stock that extends over many centuries. It's often cheaper and easier just to build something new. This seems like such a shame. And yes, as we explain in this episode the inheritance laws are not helping. Hopefully, as interest in these grand properties rebounds, there will be renewed interest in saving those that are of architectural or historical importance. Thanks for your message and for following our journey!
