It’s beautiful when quarters that were originally seen as undesirable places to go are later seen as just as intriguing and charming as the opulent spaces meant to be shown and boasted about. So excited to see what you do with all these quaint entre-sols (a new French term for me).

I can’t even fathom the amount of work, blood, sweat, tears. It is not a luxurious task, it is not fancy living, but rather, digging up the filth, human leavings, weathered old ruins to rebuild, refresh, to breath fresh life into this dying house. I applaud this couple and the incredible help by the groups aiding their monumental efforts. Truly the reward is the bringing together of all peoples in this uniting task. This is the new story or Pernon.

Another champion video. Yours is the first chateau that I've seen with that whole extensive hidden world of rooms, stairs and corridors solely for servants. I guess the other channels I watch must have less exalted past owners. It's also interesting to me that so many of those servant spaces were fairly roomy and with windows, which tells something about the original architect, doesn't it?

This restoration boggles the mind on so many levels. As we head into winter here in northeast USA, I feel your pain and efforts to stay warm in the cold winter months ahead. We own an old but charming country cottage in Portugal. Usually, we visit in the warmer months, but one year we went in winter. Omg, it was so cold! I nearly kissed the ground when we arrived back in our cozy, warm home in the US. I admire your fortitude!

I should imagine for those who came to work at Purnon, their accommodation was a luxury space, compared to a village home.
It would have made anyone proud to work in such a Chateau, they probably loved it as much as the Family.

    •  Месяц назад +9

Yes, an important point. Some of the huge social inequality that offends us today was accepted in that era. Despite the somewhat severe conditions by today's standards, many people would have been honoured to work at the chateau. It is quite true that a strict hierarchy would have existed amongst those in domestic service - people at the top of the hierarchy with a warm(ish) bed inside the chateau probably considered themselves much better off than people working as tenant farmers living in cottages without out enough wood to heat them or food to eat.

They probably didn't had any private life. They may not be slaves, but how would you have a private life when you live on your workplace and even have bells to be called anytime at night. I understand people may see it romantically. But there's nothing pretty there. I feel sad for them, yes they may have had it rougher if they weren't servants, but I definitely would not have a happy life when my existence was purely to serve a rich family that put you to live in a small tiny room and wouldn't even consider you human at all, to the point you are expected to be invisible around such a big house.

I have grown up around the Biltmore House and actually had relatives whom worked at the house for the Vanderbilts! My great (?) grandmother actually received Christmas presents from Ms. Vanderbilt! As someone who has helped restore a few old historic homes (not professionally, lol), I can testify how much hard work goes into restoration, the crazy rules/restrictions (in the US by the historical society) you must abide by, the cost to restore, and how different actually truly matching paints etc can be/is! It truly takes an act of love and devotion! Thank you so much for all of your dedication and hard work!

What a brilliant solution--aside from servant--having private/hidden spaces to store things & place to work on hobbies that you don't want out in the "public" rooms. 18th century version of "man caves" & "she sheds"--if i could ever build my own home, would use this idea!! The fact that there's fencing gear and horse tack above the office, and it's still there... untouched, it looked like... 👀
Again this house shows us which things are temporary and which things are permanent, for 18th and 19th century people...
Today, we buy a house and expect it to be empty and clean. As close to new as possible. A "fixer upper" is always discussed with a smirk and a raised eyebrow, sledge hammer in hand.
But in Purnon, it looks more like the people knew they were just temporary labor supply, to be replaced, like camera batteries. The house stayed, not the people.
"Waking the house..." keeps getting closer to reality in my head, as I watch your videos. Both a feeling of connectedness to the past, and a feeling of temporariness in view of sooo much more mass in that past than in this present... Then I shake it off and get back to work.
But maybe it's no wonder then, that if you have a fiefdom, you instinctively want to grow it! At least until 1848, that was the standard measure of success, right? Maybe colonialism isn't such a crazy idea, considered within that context. After all, they didn't even need "economic theory" if pigeons counted as "showing off." No wonder it was monks who invented double entry bookkeeping... Nobody else needed it.😂
Wonderful to watch your journey! 🫶

    •  Месяц назад +2

Thank you for your message and for contribution towards our project to save Chateau de Purnon - we really appreciate it! Not sure we're going to defend colonialism or feudalism for that matter. But you are right that it must be possible to connect with the past without being unrealistically sentimental about life in former eras. Perhaps it is enough for us to take the time to save what is beautiful and precious from the past while at the same time learning some lessons for our lives today and in the future. We're thrilled that you're enjoying our videos and following our journey and we can't wait to share progress with everyone.

Oh! Sorry if I appeared to say anything good about abusing people. Colonialism bad. Fairness, though not a solid principle (by itself) of government, is important. These days I'm thinking about what we can learn, exactly as you say... I'm wondering about the effect of declining populations, for example... does that automatically lead to deflation? What is the P/E rato of a company with profit, on declining revenue? If we seriously want walkable cities(?) but prosperity comes in part from a good job within commute distance... after listing the complexity and noting a "winner take all" distribution of income... does universal basic income start to make a more sense? How have people dealt with these issues in the past? Can we sort the similarities from the more obvious differences? How similar is Trump to Hitler? How solid are the guard rails? What implications from this global voter shift toward the right, even though the only growth, now, is from immigration? etc, etc...

What a beautiful achievement, bravo, again a château saved for mankind! France is home to an impressive number of châteaux (castles or manor houses). Estimates suggest there are around 45,000 to 50,000 châteaux across the country, including both well-maintained properties and those that have been abandoned or fallen into disrepair.
Historical estimates suggest that France may have had between 80,000 and 100,000 châteaux and manor houses from the Middle Ages to the present day. France is the country in the world with the biggest number of châteaux ever! Even these days lots of châteaux considered as dangerous to squat are demolished by the municipality.

Absolutely fascinating, and probably the most complex set of domestic accommodations in a chateau! I assumed all the domestics just had attic rooms. Suggestion for future updates: I am curious about how the boiler is working out, and I would love to hear about the logistical challenges of heating the whole chateau (as well as the significant cost). When you put the boiler in, you mentioned a lot about the preservation goals associated with keeping the interior spaces warm and dry. Will you still have to add/restore heat room by room? I think it's a really interesting design and economical challenge.

The room next to the personal chamber would be a lovely place near at hand for a child during the toddler phase, not too far to miss a cry of distress, but separated to give parents some privacy during the evenings.

The walk though you give us lets us get a really good understanding of life so many centuries ago. Thank you so much for sharing this rare treasure you call home. Love from N.Y.

Very interesting video - I was wondering whether you are planning to publish a 2nd book? I thoroughly enjoyed the 1st one and read it in 3 seatings!!! Not only were the photos beautiful but the writing was captivating. I will read it again, at a slower pace... but would love to read about your journey further! (PS I would encourage anyone interested in this project to buy your book!!)

Super interesting vlog. We all learn something new about chateau de Purnon every week. If those rooms could talk! Please continue to share your journey with us every week. I’ve become addicted (as other viewers I’m sure) to watching the house and outbuildings being meticulously restored to their 18th century splendor. 😊😊😊😊
