He saved stone barn. Also built unreal villa under hillside

- Gorka Ibargoyen bought an abandoned stone housebarn in the Bera Valley of Navarre and wanted to expand it to fit large gatherings without destroying the original character. With the help of architect friend Jordi Hidalgo Tané he went underground, building an annex to the primary home inside the adjacent hillside. Accessible via an all-glass corridor the addition is nearly invisible.
The cave-like addition resembles a fissure in a mountain, and that is what inspired Tané’s design, and is nearly invisible from the outside: it is accessible via a transparent, all-glass corridor. When looking at the model, Ibargoyen feared the hidden home might resemble a bunker, but the glass skylight in the green roof light combined with the long window running down the entire length of the structure brings in plenty of daylight to the subterranean shelter.
To unify the two structures, the used only glass, concrete, and wood for the interior, resulting in a concrete sink and a wooden shower. While the result is modern elegance, Ibargoyen insists it’s not a fussy home “Things are made to be used, and to show wear over time”, he explains and pointing to a wine stain on the cement countertop, he adds, “That is happiness”.

I have to say this is probably my favorite, (among many). There's a strange warmth, in the combination of concrete, stone and wood. He's blended the old and new beautifully. The views are beyond beautiful. I continue to look forward to your videos every week. You continue to fine the most creative and imaginative people in the world.
@Paul Fahs I hear you. Not sure if it´s my favorite, but it is one of my favorites. There is a fine blend of old/history and exquisite design simplicity.
My favorite was the micheln star chefs home in Catalonia from a year ago very similar to this but much more minimalist … this is a very close 2nd very cool vibe I love it … and these videos so beautiful and satisfying !!!
@@diamondsutra837 Oh, yeah, that one was also brilliant!
I love the concept. I like the mix of the old and new, the natural and artificial, and the idea of blending a home into the natural landscape.
ExactlyPaul - probably also my favorite among many 👍
This is Brutalism done right.
I have never seen another site on the internet that caused.....explosions in my heart and brain that this did......that architect did such a wonderful job.......I am in shock.....
So interesting the microclimate aspect of the dining room. Also your translation was on point. Was succinct and interpretative instead of literal, bridging the 2 languages conveying the true meaning. Great job. That landscape was beautiful. The builders did a wonderful job. Very creative use of the topography of the site.
It has a downside though. An example: In japan most of the time only the living room is climate controlled. The temperature differences when changing rooms in traditional japanese houses is really high. Upon changing rooms the body can get into a shock like state causing a heart attack. It's why in japan heart attack cases at home are really high, especially in elderly.
The body isn't perfect. I think a better way is to have temperature transition lightly.
Most people you interview on this channel are pretty cool, but I absolutely LOVE this dude. He seems like an amazing blend of laid-back and detail-oriented.
The house is great too. Everything is so tasteful and aesthetic without being too precious to use. Everything is modern and impressive, but still taking a backseat to the natural beauty around. This house makes me question what the relationship between house and nature really is. It's awesome.
Amazing! And love the rod stewart art. Loved the wine stain detail, "So here there was happiness", we often forget this in modern society and value objects too much
So true 😊🍷
I thought it is Bryan May? From Queen?
@@Stangya888 At 5 minutes yes, but at 4:10 it's rod stewart
@@PedroCarvalho-lb7qx who ever it is this build rocks
Mr. Ibargoyen's architect friend, Jordi Hidalgo Tane, is a genius. I can't help but see the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright in this marvelous structure. I love the way that massive concrete ceiling seems to float over the space. The transition from the old structure (wonderfully restored) into the new is like a religious experience. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when Mr. Ibargoyen said some people said the concrete needed to be painted. Sad testament as to how society in general has become so influenced by the building/design trade's standards for the sake of profit.
My thoughts exactly. I immediately thought of FLW the moment I saw the caserio extension.
Closer to John Lautner
I agree that in the extension the concrete works as is, but the argument for raw, grey concrete reminds me of the Renaissance and Enlightenment appreciation for the bare white marbles of Classical Antiquity...which we now know were not bare white.
@@suzettehenderson9278 that is a beautiful way of putting it! You perfectly encapsulated much of what I wanted to comment. You have a good eye!
It’s his OWN genius design without precedent!
You gotta admire both the architecture and engineering behind the addition. It's a beautiful space on so many levels.
Beautiful design, beautiful location, passionate owner, and engaged interviewers!
and a cart wheeling kid .... just perfect :-)
The transitions between inside and outside, interior and exterior, man made and natural, concrete and mountain, are intriguing.
Your videos feel like a good friend that shows up every Sunday, thank you… As a musician, I enjoy the silence and absence of music ✌🏼
Kristen and family, you are my favorite channel on youtube. The exposure you give to a wide variety of living spaces is so interesting. Cannot thank you enough.
Very nice. I really appreciate when people think outside the box to create something so unusual, original and beautiful. Very inspiring.
Or in this case…. Inside the hill 😝
This place is paradise.Your family is truly blessed
I agree, this addition and the renovation of the barn does equal happiness. The home is as stunning as the view!!! I don't know how you find these fabulous homes, Kirsten, but please don't stop! I would like to know when it was built, how long the construction took and what the cost was to build. Truly magnificent!
Absolutely beautiful. I love his attitude and outlook. It's all here to be used; a stain a, a crack - no big deal!! Wonderful!
Wow! This is by far one of the best houses I have seen. I've seen videos about mansions in LA and California but honestly, if I had the money I would do something like this, renovate an older house and build an extension into the hillside. Great project and video. 10/10
...is due to this is Architecture and those mansions are Mc Mansions; actually the same steel or wood framing like a normal house but 10 times bigger and with high end appliances and furniture but poor quality architectures
@@TheReverb1 True words!
This is amazing :)
I can't believe it's been 10 years since I started watching your videos and still find each one super interesting to this day. Huge supporter of you capturing these works around the world. What an awesome job!
That passageway is just too awesome.....I can Imagine my self in there in the rain.....the daytime rain and the night time rain......I would probably even extend it to making it available as a living/entertaining space....beautiful
It is so difficult to say which of your videos is the best, but this one clearly is on that list. Thank you for giving us these magnificent presents every and each time. You help me to dream and be inspired and alive. Love!
Astounding design and engineering. At huge expense. Nice to be that wealthy.
I LOVE this! Modern design meets old world beauty that can never be replaced. The use of glass for the connection is simply gorgeous in it's minimalism, and I adore concrete and wood. All together with the natural landscape this home is an architectural gem to be appreciated for generations to come.
yes, yes, yes!!
I did the Camino in 2016.
We walked 227 miles in 13 days and we walked through the two states of Astoria and Galicia and the homes were that we stayed at along the way were amazing, this video brings back those memories.
Amazing work as usual. Thank you for sharing these stories, i wouldn’t have half the ideas I have for a home if it had not been for your content. Thank you so much.
Could not have said it better!
I think this is the most amazing one yet. I love how they married the old and new with a glass passage way. I love how well hidden the newer building is.
This is so realistic & clean & comfortable. The use of wood keeps it warm & grounded.
Hi Patty
How are you today?🌹🌺
I just love his philosophy about lighting. "Night has come, it's what there is." Just the minimum lighting to move around.
I have watched so many builds and so many have claimed to design the building to blend with the surrounding to not impact the visual harmony etc etc and finally I have seen someone achieve that, bravo, bravo !
Thank you for doing this for people you don’t even know Kirsten! I just bought some property and refuse to do a stick built home. I’m so upset at prices the way they climb and fall anymore. I’ve put so much into the system that I’m ready to just NOT anymore. I’m trying to find the best way to live a sustainable lifestyle, so thank you!
That's the cutest, happiest barn I've ever seen 🙂
Fav house on RUclips, how he kept the integrity of the stones and frame of the existing building. Respecting the natural form of the land. Brilliant air purifying plants completes it phenomenal
This guy is awesome! Love how he actually uses his amazing house and doesn't care about some stains etc. It's all character which adds life to a home.🤗 your home is amazing and soo thought out and functional.
What a genius build! I am in complete awe with what they did! Magnificently done! Bravo! From Michigan. ❤️❤️❤️
WOW. That is just fantastic. Probably the best home you've ever covered. Just amazing. Tasteful, eco, functional, setting, views... mmm. I like the ambient sounds and clouds too at the start of the video.
I have never seen a house designed with so much love and sensitivity towards nature. Restoration of that old house and connecting with the new space via the glass tunnel was a brilliant execution. Being an Architect myself, I am in awe of this house. I would say clearly one of my favorites. Kudos to the Architect and thank you for bringing this to us Kirsten.
One of the closest to "my type of home" you guys have gotten to. Stunning yet warm, mesmerizing yet cozy, grand yet homey.
The smiley face on the old building is so joyfully derpy
Most comfortable modern underground home design I have seen, plus the beautiful vernacular villa for sleeping, integrated with the hill and taking advantage of the southern microclimate and great views, just brilliant design!!
kudos to architect. just awesome
Agree!
Beautiful. This is how architecture should be. A part of nature not an encroachment of it.
Espectacular. Rural, y al mismo tiempo actual. La combinación perfecta...
Sin duda, sin ninguna duda, vuestro mejor episodio.
Saludos.
Beautiful & awesome.
Stunning, what a dreamscape, the home and the landscape. The sink is the bathroom is the first I've seen like that, very interesting design.
That VIEW. An extremely sensitive and functional restoration and the extension is absolutely beautiful. Just completely stunning in every way, the architect deserves every bit of praise they could possibly get for this project. If that was my home I doubt I'd ever leave
This is, by far, the most beautiful house you've ever filmed. What a place!
Good to see the family grow (in hight) over the years and present this building with life! I am surprised that I love this architecture to possibly be my most memorable ever. Most impressive perfection
this is as good architecture as it can get. superb light, great attention to the heritage while creatively reusing an abandoned agroindustrial building without the pretentiuosness of minimalism. one of the best videos you've made so far, thanks!
De lo mejor en el canal sin duda, gran proyecto
This is my favorite kind of design, it's modern in that it uses stark, engineered features on the building itself, but it's rustic in that is builds focus around natural materials on the interior. This kind of interior look for a renovated castle would be awesome.
I love this. It may be at the top of the homes I've seen on your channel. Edit: That type, very little is shown of the property. I wish you'd slowly gone through the entire property, documenting it all.
I didn't understand a word he said. And I also understood everything he communicated. This is a wonderful place. !:- )
Brilliant collaboration between the architect & owner. Perfect!
Love this house so much! ❤ Have watched this video like 10 times. Concrete, Glass, Parklex, Plants ... Awesome! Thanks
Bravo Gorka!
Yeow - I love it. SOOOO good! I want to be there..
This beautiful home is a Grand Design that could easily have been featured on the UK TV programme of the same name. Many thanks to Kirsten and co for bringing fantastic content of homes both Grand and Tiny for us to enjoy and marvel.
Wonderful way of keeping the old building with the new beautiful construction. I was waiting to see the entire bathroom in the new place. Gracias por este hermoso video. 🇪🇸 🇲🇽 🇺🇸
I agree with comment below that the architect is a genius and in terms of how well the extension was thought out. Its a beautiful space and credit to low impact design on the environment. Great place to relax and entertain, and what I found very appealing there is plenty of light and space for the plants to grow successfully and also grow quite large, which is what I love and creating a healthy environment for the occupants. There are elements about the design that remind me of some of the building design at the Eden Project, I like it very much. I hope the owner will have a very good and happy life there.
I love the mix of old/new and the happiness of it all. Wish we could have seen the whole kitchen!
Beautiful home and great interview!!!
Love it. The 'bunker" is not too big. It is pretty basic. Nice reno. on the caserio, with lovely touches.
He, his family, his architect, and the builders did wonderful work.
I renovate old, tiny apartments, alone, minimalist, no transportation...just a wheeled suitcase.
The way things are I would want it to be a bunker…just saying.
One of the most creative homes youve ever featured!!!
Fantastic build- restoring the old barn to be bedrooms and then building this very modern addition into the mountain. I love how the new building is hidden away, that it is environmental in terms of temperature control, that it easy to take care of, and it has great views.
Absolutely beautiful, functional!
To the owner: my only rec would be to remove that tent pole from the yard, it impacts the stunning mountain view!
Kristen, you have such an interesting channel! I love that you take a step back, shoot plenty of angles, and allow the owners to show you around, displaying their love and history of each home. Bravo!
LOVE this place! Love all the transitions, microclimates, vistas, reclaimations!!! A pleasure for all the senses!
Wow it’s a great, creative house . So in tune with nature and views to die for. Absolutely outstanding.
La casa es muy bonito!
Gracias por content!
What a lovely life you lead, thank you for sharing 🏞️❤️🍀
Wow how cool! The home looks one with the mountainside and what a beautiful view! This home is giving me some forest gnome vibes haha
You just keep gettin' better, girl. Such a pleasure to share your projects and your growth.
he is the master of his physical environment...BRAVO
That just might be the most inspired thing I've ever seen!
Thank You!
The floating ceiling on all sides becomes the focal point to be enjoyed externally and internally, it also creates a sculptural piece of art by itself that represents modernism, dynamism and movement. Along with the paintings on the lit wall, the structure transforms easily into an exhibition space. The only remark i have is that I wish there was some space left above between the glass roof of the annex and the concrete ceiling at the entrance to the new structure. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 for the creative architect
Stupendous! Creative, joyous and plain lovely. I’m incredibly envious.
Am loving this u guys never disappoint. Always bringing UNIQUE buildings home property keep it up. Hello from Jamaica 🇯🇲
Stunning video, Kirsten! Thank you.
Thank You for this video! So Inspirational! Many Blessings to You and your Family! Thank YOU !!!!
Thank you - hard working people, you make magic!
Que casa maravillosa!
Hi Cordelia
How are you today?🌹🌺
Thank you! Breathtaking and ingenious!!
This is beautiful. One of my favorites on the channel
Absolutely amazing and a great way to use these old houses and create enough useable living space. I like keeping the old house dark and quiet for sleeping and the living area, communal areas separate. I absolutely love this, my favourite video from this channel. Thank you for sharing!
Officially this is how all houses should be built, for proper temps and ecosystems sustainability
Thanks for posting and sharing. Nice continuity between the older building and the new underground living area.
Sensational, again! Thank you, great stuff.
This is truly incredible! And the views..WOW!
I always appreciate the places and your videos about them and the people who are featured, but this project and this man and this incredible landscape...llorando.
Wow, talk about unique, this is it! Truly love this.
Simply amazing Kirsten! Bravo!.. With the right telescope I could see that property from my hilltop property in the East Bay.
Approaching a most-appealing and sensible design here. Smart architecture plans for minimum reliance on heating and air conditioning in the home; underground temperatures are more constant. Thanks for showing off more of the design possibilities.
I think about this casa every week! I come back to see it for the fourth time haha its perfect
Wow 😮 uno de mis favoritos de tu canal, Gracias Kirsten
One of my favourites so far!
You are incredible …you really discover the most amazing homes and locations…be safe
"And the woods keep following us ....." 💞💞
What a wonderful beautiful house, what a lovely owner, what a great guy his architect was and how can we persuade people to build more homes like these? God Bless the Basques... and can we please get them on our local council and start giving people living homes?
I really like the house and the living area next to it. Very interesting; ive been thinking about buying an old house and doing exactly this: taking all the wood out, and rebuild the inside with concrete. Really cool! The wood really finishes the whole thing.
Thanks for sharing your house!
Greetings,
Jeff
Wow amazing architecture. Built right into the hillside! spectacular
This is amazing, contrasting, integrative and harmonious.
Thanks for another amazing vid, Kirsten. ( : Love the way he integrated the very old with the very new and primarily with only wood and cement.
