- In today's video, we visit Michael Judd's beautiful roundwood timber-framed straw bale home in Frederick, Maryland.
This natural building's frame was built mainly with storm-fallen lumber sourced directly from their property. The clay, sand, and straw used in the home were also sourced locally. The round design is especially unique and creates a special sense of flow throughout the home. A special thanks to Michael Judd and his family for having us and taking the time to show us around!

Stumbled upon this.. out of all the videos I've seen of "dream homes", this is the closest to my actual realistic dream for a plot of land I have in Poland. This version is perfect. I want exactly this. :) Well done and all the best to you! :)

This is a beautiful home! How nice that you could incorporate so many local resources. In 2007, my daughter and I (and our wonderfully helpful friends) built a round, straw bale chicken coop. I love round structures, and the chickens seem to, as well!

Wow, Michael I am like so totally impressed. You sir are not only a genius but a man of many incredible talents. Not only that but you are living the dream! I'm so much like you. I'm 65, an artist, poet, been self employed as a chimney sweep for 25 years and yes! I even built fireplaces. Now I do remodeling and painting but my dream now is to sell the poetry I have written and my books and build a home just like you got! I have been looking at octagon and round houses for months. I have looked at probably a hundred and your house is in the top 5 as far as Im concerned. Maybe some day I can come out and visit. I am also big time into gardening and I grow most of my own food. Job well done my man you are a unique and rare individual in todays techno stink world. LOL

In Mexico the haciendas were made of red clay with straw and or regular Mud and then used white paint made of limestone
The were made from river silt so you would not have to dig hard, compacted earth. The river did the hard work for you. You scooped up the soft silt to put in baskets which in turn would put into a wagon or wheel-barrow to be placed on site.
Truly incredible work! Hopefully I can build a straw bale home of my own one day 😅

What I love about straw bale construction is eliminating flat walls and right angle connections instead, there are curves in the walls and space can be made into round spaces. So cool!
