    This type of housing has been popularized for about three decades now. It was much more affordable back then. Today, it costs as much or more to build this type of home as it costs to just buy a commercially produced home. I am estimating around $300,000.00 to fund an Earth'ship build today. Including land, permits, contractors, etc. Meaning: These may be "SELF SUSTAINABLE" homes. But, they are certainly not affordable for the vast vast majority of people if my estimates are even 1/3 correct.

      Not if you DIY everything

    • @TheRealHonestInquiry
      @TheRealHonestInquiry Год назад +8

      Have you also calculated the yearly cost of utilities and maintenance to run a commercially produced home?

    • @MYZTICTRAVLER
      @MYZTICTRAVLER Год назад +11

      @@cleverkids6196There is a limit to DIY on a house build. No matter what type of house that is being built. There are strict code requirements for electrical (Solar included), plumbing, Heating/A-C, framing, roofing, etc. It all has to be done to code. These aspects of home building apply to Earthship homes too. This means that a DIY home builder has to posess the required skills and licenses to do the work in all four of the mentioned trade areas. Otherwise they must hire licensed tradesmen to do the work in all four of the areas I just listed. But the vast majority of people do not posess those skills. And so there is no cost savings to be had in the areas where you have to hire contractors and licensed tradesmen. Also and most crucial to my arguement is the fact nearly 3/4 of the population doesn't have $500.00 in savings, nor any investments, nor pension funds. So unless these "Affordable" homes suddenly become free to build, the average person, including your aspiring DIY home builder, doesn't have $300-400,000.00 to build an earthship.
      ***Note: There are a handfull of states, or even counties where building permits are not required. This effectively also means no code standards to meet. But the issue of funds, or lack thereof still applies.

      You are right. They are not the most accessible but I like to explore various methods. Cob and straw bales are the way to go.

    Beautiful and cozy!!.....the only 2 things I don't like is that she doesn't have a bed room door,... I feel much more save if there is another door I can close...and the other thing is I hate the boring and super hot desert, because I really LOVE LOVE LOVE the cold I love the forest and mountains with snow on top...so its just the wrong place for me.... I would love this home somewhere up in Canada or Montana surrounded by lakes and tones of trees!!!

      I'm totally with you! Need green trees around me without dusty desert and heat. Love fresh water from the mountains and moss! My house can be smaller too only a place for orchids and other plants will be fine because i am not healty i love to have nature in my walls if i can't get out much. Bungalow will be perfect without many staires.

    Fantastic! Recycling and natural energy would be a great solution for every single building on Earth, but what I see as a problem is people's unwillingness to learn. Most investors and builders would rather work in "classic" ways even if that means spending much more money on literally everything (except to pay workers) and more pollution than to change their ways. People are lazy, that's our issue. Me included. But, well I am not young anymore, it's to this new generation to accept this new ways. I hope.

      There needs to be some modifications for the local environment, but other than that earthships have been built all over the world. I've searched/Googled and have found cold climate examples built in Alaska, Ontario, PEI, Vermont and Maine.
