I will be ordering this controller in a few days. My only immediate critiques are that they went out of their way to "modernize" a GameCube controller just to oddly stack all of the face buttons together instead of just putting the OG button layout on a modern style controller. The last but more important is that this is obviously trying to be sold as a new way to play Smash but the S button effectively kills any chance of this controller being competitive/tournament "legal" and taking off out of the gate.
Yeah, I'll probably use a Gamecube controller for in person tournies. But I dont plan on going back to those for a while due to Covid. For online tournies, however, I'll be using this. The short cut for short hop will be big to make up for the input delay from online. I always feel like I short hop easier offline, so this will hopefully make up for it.
I'm reeeeeeeeeally hoping that they eventually release their GameCube controllers with Bluetooth.
I'll probably wait for this to be on Amazon, I'm interested in trying this out.

Wouldn't it be nice if they made a reciever for the gamecube's controller port so we could use this on an actual gamecube?

I was thinking GameCube receiver, Wii / Classic-Edition receiver and probably a PS-one / PS2 receiver just in case I want to use an Xbox-style controller on a PS2 console.
Also, the upcoming Retro Fighters Defender controller doesn't have the Xbox-style left stick and direction button layout.

The A button in relation to the rest of the buttons seems a bit awkward. Does it feel alright tho?
Yeah, the A and B buttons feel great and very similar to the GameCube. I do kind of wish X and Y were like the original layout though. Thanks for watching!

@@NeiltendoPower I suggested a joystick/button mapping option to get around this issue but no luck. Said they might revise the design next year after they've sorted the first run. From what I can tell, the D-pad approach is mainly to benefit GameBoy Player gamers.
I was about to buy it, but the X and Y buttons are to weirdly laid out and small. Otherwise this would be amazing.

I think in their process of reinventing the gamecube wheel, they've created separate problems from the OG layout. For many people, the S button's position would be their ideal X button position to perform both full hops and short hops. Compacting the buttons does make it easier to hit X+Y at the same time to short hop (for smaller/thinner thumbs albeit made useless with S button there) and flick specials quickly off of jumps but at the expense of being too compact for large hand users and too far away from the A button.
Finally, the controller can't be tournament legal with the S button's shortcuts. I would much rather have two buttons at the back of the controller as additional jump buttons to perform shorthops and c-stick aerials. I also don't think the capabilities of the S button should be left to one button, as I'm sure some people would prefer it in other locations like L/ZL. Aside from the large A button and octogate analog sticks, I can't say this controller would help me more than a standard pro controller.
It's really not fit for Smash due to its differences. It's really good quality, but it just ain't a GameCube replacement.
In the future, can you do a comparison with Retro fighter's upcoming (whenever it will be released) ps2 defender controller with Hyperkin's Brave Warrior Ps2 controller as a modern ps2 controller alternative.

This thing seems cool until you realize the functions are kinda useless. Just press a+b for a smash attack, x+a for an aerial, and x+y for a short hop which is probably gonna be easier than having a weird button layout. The only thing that might make me buy this is the notches cause with my pro controller sometimes I accidentally sd

Nice video, but considering it simulates a GC controller, does it have analog shoulder triggers?
It definitely does not. It's really weird that Hall effect triggers have not been used in a GameCube replica yet.

This guy is trying so hard to find problems with this. The controller is amazing.
It's definitely a quality controller, but for Smash... it just isn't what the vast majority want, as is proven by how poorly this thing sells.
I just got the controller. Dont bother. the Control stick is awful. which for smash is a death sentence.
