There's a lot that can go wrong with wireless controllers. For example, someone can connect to the switch with a wireless controller and do a match, then forget to unpair the controller. Then they can accidentally or intentionally disrupt the match.
You're definitively wrong. Best controller is the Donkey Konga Bongos passed through a wireless GameCube adapter while playing with your feet. 2/10 for the video, would not smash.

The grey USB connector on the Gamecube adapter is for rumble only. You can connect only the black USB and it works for the controller and leaves a USB open.
I was hoping someone would say this. I've known this for years because I just tested it myself. I was literally the only one I know that knew this, as I was telling everyone at a tournament.

@@Jbayz hahaha you do realize youre calling me a nerd on a video about which gamecube controller is best for super smash brothers right? I just like laughing, laughing's my favorite
It's less about the travel for activation as much as it's annoying to have a button travel so far that you have to use so often. It's very much usable. It just has no real use in a fighting game.
That switchable stick on the PDP controller is sheer genius. Still recall the old thumbstick friction burn from using the GameCube controller back in the day. Thanks for letting me know about this so I can now go and get one.
Small correction about the OG GCC shoulders. It registers the input after a certain analog value. You don't need to bottom out for the digital click. This means that you aren't actually hindered for using it. You don't need both USB ports for the adapter. The gray is only used for rumble which most people who want the GCC turn off anyway. You can also remap controls in Smash (the rare time Nintendo handles controls right) so the whole shoulder flip-flop on 3rd party controllers or Joycons doesn't matter. There is also a cheaper 3rd party GCC adapter by Mayflash that works just as well and works on PC out of the box. And small note, wired Pro Controller is even slower than wireless Pro Controller. Likely just a design defect but interesting nonetheless. Just mentioning since it's an option and wired isn't always faster (not that you said it was).
On your first point though about the OG GCC shoulders registering input after a certain analog value: do you feel as if the long travel on those buttons aren't still an issue when you consider the fact that people don't consciously do half presses and then let off the shoulder button to reduce time spent if needed to press again soon after? I feel like if you need to be free for your next input as soon as possible when playing competitively, you would probably do best with a controller where you can confirm an input with little travel and muscle memory than trying to compromise one for other.
@NPC #9258813 In smash, your shield goes light or harder based on the pressure/travel of the shoulder. Timing (how long included), density and angle of your shield actually matters, especially in advanced/pro play. So U actually lose functionality and this exactly why you would see pros only use the original design.
@@YaKillaCJ Actually light and heavy shields are gone, those are only in melee. In brawl, 4, and ultimate, the shield is the same regardless. Making analog triggers even more useless
@@soulseer5789 with the new controllers, there is no analog input, its been replaced with digital. i feel they kept the controller the same throughout for the purpose of ease of use for old and new smash players.
@@KingDrixx In all reality, due to the buffering and how inputs work in Ultimate, pressing shield for too long doesn't really matter. What matters is just the time to the input. Shield doesn't have any downsides for pressing too long like a jump or attack could. That said, if you remap the trigger to something else, it'll likely hinder you. I tried L to Jump, it sucked where it's better on the Pro. But this video doesn't seem like it was made with the knowledge that you can remap.
I use it. To be fair though, i also use the wireless power-a gc controller that doesn't have rumble. Bottom line is i prefer rumble for smash attacks but i don't miss it either.
Zane Gillespie do these alternative controllers have rumble (not HD)? I’d really miss it! I have a couple of old GCN controllers - will they rumble if the white one is plugged in?
Another note. The Original Gamecude controller L/R has a lot of travel but theirs a reason. In smash, the shield has different pressure sensitivities. Low or Hard shield and it matters in advanced/pro play. BTW another note even the tilt of your shield matters. Attaching to this comment.
Agree about the shoulder buttons! BUT! Super easy to mod to remove that massive extra travel. I cut slivers of 3M foam squares (leaving 1 side of stickiness covered) to hold the buttons in the halfway-down position. Pretty sweet but still should've been a dang digital button
I've beaten one of my friends one time with a Joycon Controller when they had a Pro Controller. Next time, I'm going to try and beat someone with a Poké Ball Plus controller... and then I'll try to beat someone with the POWER GLOVE.
I bought the blue controller months ago and I love it to bits, not just for smash too. It’s so much more comfortable than joycons or regular pro controllers in my opinion
I have used the joycons with the controller grip thing since the game came out but I turned tap jump off, both left shoulder buttons to grab, right back shoulder to shield, front right shoulder to jump, y to attack, a to jump, and tilt stick and it’s amazing
skullcandy14785 Hard to imagine that back in the day I could barely use ps3 controllers cuz my hands are too big. If I pushed right on the left thumbstick and left on the right thumbstick my fingers would mash intk each other. Thank god for the new ps4 controllers
You actually only need to use one of the USB ports for the GC controller adapter. The second port only adds rumble, so you can have just one of the ports occupied and still play with a GC controller
Thanks for your video. I appreciate your work. The controller you mentioned at 9:21 has been the best one for me because of its size/weight/reliability. I bought a PDP Sonic controller, whilst I bought the Mario one for my friend. But I have a bone to pick with PDP. Both of our “A” buttons stick. And mine just happened after 1-2 weeks of playing. So my pretty sonic controller is just sitting around for its looks right now. It was $60 brand new and hard to find. I’m a sonic Mainer so I was so happy to find sonic themed controller and I wasn’t mad that it costed $20 more than my friends Mario controller. But as you said, the “A” button is the focus of the right side of the controller. Not happy at all. Have been trying noninvasive cleaning to fix it. But nothing works, because it’s not dirty. I’ll be calling them up to see what they will do. And I’ll advise if there’s any feedback. Does your “A” button stick from time to time on your Zelda PDP controller?
I got both the PDP and the powerA wireless controller. I prefer the feel on the powerA controller. Even after months of switching between the 2 controllers, the pdp one still feels the same as it did when I bought it. Does mean it's a proper controller, the problem is that it lacks some comfort at that point.
that Power A controller worked wonderfully for me for a long time, but eventually the A button specifically (y'know, the one Smash really needs) started sticking. I've cleaned the controller and tried dissembling it and everything but no luck. I'm just glad I got it for 30 bucks on Black Friday instead of MSRP
I have the pdp one, and I've been using as my main controller. It's so nice. I really love it! The reason I'm doing this is because my pro controllers left stick is dragging really badly. So it's unusable. And apparently every single pro controller has this problem, so I didn't want to shell out another 70 dollars for a doomed controller. I was using an Xbox one controller with the 8bitdo adapter, but it only stays connected for about 30 minutes and takes longer to connect. A ps4 connects faster and for longer, but it kept making my switch shut down completely. So I'm extremely with my pdp gamecube controller. Plus I main link in smash so it's cool that it has that design. Thank you for reading my novel!
PhamilyX Kun he’s trying to make content out of something he doesn’t even profess or have much knowledge in. Honestly why am i here this video is a waste of my time.
I am using my now around 15-17 year old gamecube controller from when i was a kid, they still need the adapter, but otherwise work just perfectly and i am super happy about that :)
Do you still need the GameCube controller adapter for the switch to make the wavebird work? I have a wavebird but want to know for sure it works with the GameCube controller adapter before I buy :)
Yep the wavebird is still the best in my opinion. I like the build and look of it. Been using it for 15+ years and still going strong. I actually ordered another one recently just in case 20 years after I bought it, it dies on me.
a note to anyone watching currently: the pdp controller is both ridiculously priced in most cases and also, when notched in the downright/downleft notch, in ultimate specifically, it will walk forward as opposed to the normal GCC which makes you crouch and still inputs a downward angled f-tilt when you press A. i also had this problem on multiple Power A wired controllers after about a month or two of heavy use each. never had this issue with any OEM controller
I have the powerA controller and I love it. ONE major problem though is i went to a tournament and it was a major pain to connect it every time I switched stations. It also kept connecting to the other console and I had to start taking the batteries out so that i would not interrupt the other players. I went back to the cord.
For the people coming to watch this thinking which to get I’d go w the classic GameCube controller(wireless version if possible) it literally says on the box for it “considered best way to play smash” I used to play travel way the whole time and I just knew that if I bought a controller id be able to pull off moves I wanted to do and as soon as I received it I noticed an instant difference…now I wasn’t a master smasher now but I was able to do a lot better
I had a feeling there was some input lag here and there; I've been using the Bowser themed Pro Controller for awhile and while I do love it, I think I might go with the Zelda PDP controller as I feel for me personally, especially in competitive setting (if you really wanna get serious that is) that every second matters and the lower response time I feel would make me do better. 8.5 is a huge leap from 7.5. Not only that, but as someone whose used the Gamecube controller since Melee, I love it all around and it has such a nice comfortable feel. I have noticed that switching over to the Pro Controller does give me a rather awkward feel so it makes sense to swap eitherway. But hey, I figured I'd give a different controller a try right? See if it worked or not and it did to a point sure, but, doesn't exactly feel the same.
You said you don't play wireless bc you don't like input lag. At the end you say that you can't feel any difference in terms of lag between any of the controllers?
Imagine if you showed up at a tournament with a single joycon

For gamecube controllers the shoulder buttons only need to go like half way
T3M0 Lul less than that, its like 1/4 travel from rest
I'm a simple man, I see a gold controller, I click.
The OG GameCube controller will start your shield right when you press it, don’t have to press all the way down so travel time won’t matter on smash.
Yeah, those shoulder triggers don't poll strictly at 1 or 0, instead traveling between 1 and 0 based on how far you push down.
Thats where i noticed that this guy has no idea what he is talking about
It's less about the travel for activation as much as it's annoying to have a button travel so far that you have to use so often. It's very much usable. It just has no real use in a fighting game.
Analog triggers with a Digital button in the bottom, Games can (and sometimes did in the gamecube days) map both to different functions.
If you do press it all the way down the buffer can keep it pressed after you release it
That switchable stick on the PDP controller is sheer genius.
The divots are a good thing. They are used for forward tilts, certain recoveries, and angled smash attacks.
Actually you don’t need both ports. You only need the black one. The white one is for rumble. (That nobody uses)
I use it. To be fair though, i also use the wireless power-a gc controller that doesn't have rumble. Bottom line is i prefer rumble for smash attacks but i don't miss it either.
Can somebody fact check this please? I would do it myself but only have one adapter
Zane Gillespie do these alternative controllers have rumble (not HD)? I’d really miss it! I have a couple of old GCN controllers - will they rumble if the white one is plugged in?
@@kyonlamb Yes this is true. You can even use the adapter on a PC and only need the black cable for the controller to work.
Another note. The Original Gamecude controller L/R has a lot of travel but theirs a reason. In smash, the shield has different pressure sensitivities. Low or Hard shield and it matters in advanced/pro play. BTW another note even the tilt of your shield matters.

Agree about the shoulder buttons! BUT! Super easy to mod to remove that massive extra travel. I cut slivers of 3M foam squares (leaving 1 side of stickiness covered) to hold the buttons in the halfway-down position. Pretty sweet but still should've been a dang digital button
Lol, I have used the Pro and Joycon but with the straps in the Joycons. The straps make a HUGE difference.
does joycon has lag?. i mean on not online games it seems fine enough for me.
One in each hand, straps so you don't throw due to how intense the game is.
How can it make différence ? Im.enw to the game . Teach me pls :(
HANAFI Diaa El Haq it’s more comfortable with the straps because it makes them wider
I've beaten one of my friends one time with a Joycon Controller when they had a Pro Controller. Next time, I'm going to try and beat someone with a Poké Ball Plus controller... and then I'll try to beat someone with the POWER GLOVE.
Don't do it to them 😂

That's exactly how I'd react to.
Ever since brawl I've been using the Wii Balance Board, really keeps me in shape during my long smash sessions.
If you actually cared about input lag you wouldn't play on a TV....
You would play on a monitor with wired controller

that requires thought. we don't have those anymore as you well know

I love this channel. It was just, when he said that...I uh...idk what to think.
I have used the joycons with the controller grip thing since the game came out but I turned tap jump off, both left shoulder buttons to grab, right back shoulder to shield, front right shoulder to jump, y to attack, a to jump, and tilt stick and it’s amazing
PowerA GameCube controller gave me the Wavebird nostalgia. I can play Mario kart, Mario Tennis, and Odyssey. I'm set...
To be honest I use a ps4 controller for SMASH

Been recently watching a bunch of reviews for controllers, this guy definitely has the best humor I've seen
I like the wireless PowerA a lot. I don't mind any of the control styles though. Even a single joy-con works surprisingly well.
You actually only need to use one of the USB ports for the GC controller adapter. The second port only adds rumble, so you can have just one of the ports occupied and still play with a GC controller
Thank you. Didn't knew that
Is this the guy from silicon valley?
Holy fuck, I thought I was the only one with the same question 😂

My A button for PDP started sticking after just 2 weeks. Paid 60 buckaroos for it. Not happy.
@@tlopez2608 i found them on amazon for 12 dollars feel bad for you man
Someone should get the N64 controller to work on Ultimate
I both hate and love this
Joe Generic lol dude I grew up using the N64 controller I would love to try it on the new SSB
You can, just google N64 to GameCube adapter ! I use mine, it’s cool!
I was just thinking about that. I would dominate with it. The Z button placement alone would be worth it.
My competitive self cried when he said the hori is the same as the og GameCube controller
This guy really does not know his shit.
It’s cool man

I enjoy using the pro controller.
3ds controls were actually lit. Maybe it was just the XL I dont know.
I am using my now around 15-17 year old gamecube controller from when i was a kid, they still need the adapter, but otherwise work just perfectly and i am super happy about that :)
I'm rockin my good, old fashioned Wavebird.
Been with me from GC, to Wii, to WiiU & now the Switch.
My Best & favorite GC controller! :D
Got to look for mine haha! This should have been brought back instead. I enjoy the Pro Controller but need to button remap
Yeah that's what I've been using too, hasn't done me wrong yet
Do you still need the GameCube controller adapter for the switch to make the wavebird work? I have a wavebird but want to know for sure it works with the GameCube controller adapter before I buy :)
@@Paratrooper9 yeah you do need it
Yep the wavebird is still the best in my opinion. I like the build and look of it. Been using it for 15+ years and still going strong. I actually ordered another one recently just in case 20 years after I bought it, it dies on me.
I just feel like the pro controller is really comfey and nice tbh
You still need to cover up.
JOYCONBOYZ🖤
Rest easy Des🖤
hold up we them boys (hold up) make some noise
a note to anyone watching currently: the pdp controller is both ridiculously priced in most cases and also, when notched in the downright/downleft notch, in ultimate specifically, it will walk forward as opposed to the normal GCC which makes you crouch and still inputs a downward angled f-tilt when you press A. i also had this problem on multiple Power A wired controllers after about a month or two of heavy use each. never had this issue with any OEM controller
I have the powerA controller and I love it. ONE major problem though is i went to a tournament and it was a major pain to connect it every time I switched stations. It also kept connecting to the other console and I had to start taking the batteries out so that i would not interrupt the other players. I went back to the cord.
I have one and the L stick rubber has started to rub off after just several hours of use. I may have to return it or get a replacement.
It plays just like the Pro controller. Actually the switch thinks that it is a pro controller and not a game cube controller. @Griff -
For the gamecube adapter u dont need two usb ports u can just plug in the black one (the silver one’s for rumble which is practically useless)
I actually like playing smash on the joycon, gives me more of a challenge. I'm a monster.
you are
Funny enough that's why I mained Pichu in Melee.
Hows it been for you so far?
You said you don't play wireless bc you don't like input lag. At the end you say that you can't feel any difference in terms of lag between any of the controllers?
Mapping your y button to grab is a great way to be able to do it without shielding accidentally
