    Just to have it organized, here's my process when I start the game with a GameCube controller:
    1. Turn on the Switch
    2. Open Mario Kart from the home screen, using the Joy-Cons, to disable doubled inputs - 14:49
    3. Reset my GameCube controller for soft drifting (you don't need to be on the calibration menu) - 7:24
    4. Enter a "worldwide" (me + 11 japanese players)
    5. Lose
    Gamecube Controller FAQ:
    Do I have to be on the calibration screen when resetting?
    - No, the calibration screen is weird. In fact I recommend resetting after Mario Kart has been opened. Just hold slightly up on the left stick, hold X+Y+Start for a few seconds, press A to reconnect the controller, and you're done! It all takes 5 seconds. If you really want to see the exact inputs, you can open the calibration screen afterwards
    How much should I hold the left stick upwards when resetting?
    - A very little amount; around 1-2 degrees or 1 millimeter. Every controller is slightly different, so if this does not get you fast mini-turbo charge speeds as described in the video, then hold the stick a bit higher when resetting.
    Do I have to reset the controller every time I play?
    - Yes, I reset at the start of every session. You have to reset your controller if it disconnects, or if your Switch goes to sleep or powers off. It only takes 5 seconds to reset
    Do I have to connect a controller with a motion sensor, to disable doubled inputs, every time I play?
    - No. In my experience, I only need to do this if the Switch powers off.
    Can you spam the D-Pad to shake trick?
    - I have not found a way to simulate a shake trick on a gamecube controller, even with the D-Pad.
    Can any gamecube controller do the notch reset?
    - I can only confirm that official Nintendo gamecube controllers work (even old ones work). I have tried "Nintendo Switch Gamecube Controllers", and they cannot reset. I have tried cheap 3rd party gamecube controllers, and some of them can reset, but the input precision is so poor that it still cannot soft drift.
    What if my Gamecube Controller won't connect to the Switch, even though the adapter is set to Switch mode, and plugged in properly?
    - Try updating the adapter (search on the internet for how to do that)
    I have a different question!
    - Leave a new comment (not a reply comment) on this video. I check this comment section frequently and will probably be able to help you!

      I just thought maybe you can use the nintendo switch sports soccer strap with a joycon in it. If you strap it to your foot maybe you can shake trick. I don't have the gamecube controller to test it, but I thought it'd be cool if it works.

    I had a project for one of my computer science classes where I had to make something with a raspberry Pi and a bunch of sensors. So of course, I built a controller for MK8D. I used PVC pipes to build a set of handlebars, an accelerometer to tell what angle the wheel was pointed at, a tilt sensor for a throttle, and buttons for everything else. Hooked everything up to mart1nro’s Joycontrol code, and bam. Best project I’ve ever done.

    This video has blown my mind. I have sometimes begrudgingly used my gamecube controller when family is around, hating the experience because I couldn't soft drift on it. But knowing WHY it doesn't soft drift, and how to actually deal with it, I never thought I'd have someone tell me this. Not only that but I never knew you could do that with the D pad to do motion glider... looks like I'll be using my gamecube controller from now on.

      You actually don't need to go through the charades of messing with the calibration of the analog sticks, you can just feel the straight edge of the gate and know you are in the soft drifting spot. Because it's not a circle, the edge is closer to the center than the 45 degree angle, so if you just feel a little bit under it you feel the difference and get perfect soft drifts without needing to mess around in the settings

  • @veldhuizenc
    @veldhuizenc 11 месяцев назад +354

    Thank you so much Shortcat. I've been watching MK8DX guides from English speaking content creators for so long, and you're one of the newer (to me) ones I've recently ran into. My VR on MK8DX online is around 50K so I've been an experienced player for years, but the main question I was always asking is what is the best controller for soft drifting, because as far as time trialing goes for precise mini-turbos and other strats, there's no technique more important in the game than soft drifting and neutral drifting.... appreciate this so much. Still learning something new even after the DLC is over!

    I still use Joy-Cons and while I am good at soft-drifting, it dire situations it can get messy or even in time trials. So, having this extra bit of consistency with the GC controller is great. Can only advocate for this reason alone to use the GC controller, tbh. no matter the skill level. You want consistency every time.

    great vid. I have used both pro controller and GC when playing mariokart. the only thing that keeps me on pro controller is that sometimes on a GC controller (particularly older ones), because the triggers are analog, when trailing an item, the game will just throw the item when you didnt release the trigger. in extreme cases, the controller can flicker between the switch considering the trigger to be pressed or not, and it will spam all your items away. its a rare occurrence, but this has even happened to Ludwig on stream when playing MK8DX, and you can see his confusion on his face when it happens.

      Input doubling is super weird and I don't understand why it happens in the first place. There is even a difference in animation when soft drifting (check the Yoshi clip where I talk about bad soft drifting, the left Yoshi leans more, and so does peach in the next clip).
      So now I can go back and see which videos I recorded with doubled inputs, and cringe at the bad driving 😇

  • @Bayesic
    @Bayesic 11 месяцев назад +9

    First off I REALLY enjoyed your way of explaining why motion glider is faster. Don't know if you've ever had a moment when watching a video where you go "Shit that's how *I* should have explained that" but that was it for me lol
    As far as which controller is "better" I think it depends
    1. If you're a new-ish player it might be a bit complicated to set up a gamecube controller properly, but once you do it's clearly easier to learn the tech on gamecube than it is on switch
    2. At top level I do actually think the pro controller is still better though, and that's because button remapping + --> L and Y --> R makes doing motion glider pretty straightforward with like 5 minutes of practice. I also think a lot of people will find it pretty awkward to take their right hand off the controller mid race. Not saying that this makes gamecube bad, just that I don't think it actually provides much of a clear advantage. And being forced to give up shake tricking really does hurt in enough circumstances that I'd say it's a pretty clear disadvantage
    3. However I've gotta say this is an absolute GAME CHANGER for speedruns, because in a speedrun, pausing actually pauses the game unlike online where it keeps going, and so all of the benefits of motion controls are more than cancelled out by how long you spend in the pause menu. HOWEVER the fact that gamecube has no motion sensor means that we can play with motion controls on all the time without it screwing up our lines. This means that gamecube has actually unlocked motion controls for speedrunning, which is AMAZING, and almost certainly worth being forced to give up the ability to shake trick

    • @Shortcat321
      @Shortcat321  11 месяцев назад +5

      Thank you Bayesic!! For anyone who doesn't know, this is the man I first learned motion glider from.
      1. Yes, there are a few steps and it's possible to unknowingly mess it up. Especially accidentally having doubled inputs turned on.
      2. For time trials, pro controller may still be better because of the greater range of inputs that are possible (dpad only lets you hit 8 coordinates). Also you don't need to take your right hand off the controller for gamecube controller, you just stretch your right thumb over to the dpad. It's pretty easy to do. Also as someone who uses the gamecube controller, I'm pretty sure I save more time on motion glider than the time I lose on missed tricks. I have not measured this though, and the difference would also depend on the exact distribution of tracks you play on. For example, competitive lounge players play some tracks way more than other tracks.
      3. Awesome! I didn't even think about that. The difference here would be measurable, since in a speedrun you know exactly which tracks you're going to play on, and therefore the expected amount of time saved from motion glider, and time lost from missed tricks.

  • @Hegna1
    @Hegna1 11 месяцев назад +23

    Just FYI (admittedly something I imagine you've considered) for the soft drifting, a lot of high level Smash Melee players just have their controller filed down with special notches to hit certain angles consistently (firefox angles for recovery, wavedash angles for maximum distance). Obviously, this requires controller modding, which isn't for everyone, but I imagine a similar approach could be used for soft drifting to not need to reset the controller. Probably not super necessary, but figure it can be an option worth considering too?

    • @Shortcat321
      @Shortcat321  11 месяцев назад +4

      Compared to controller resetting, the only advantage I can think of for custom notches is to get soft drifting on all 4 diagonals. With resetting, you have to pick between the up diagonal and the down diagonal.
      Most good players soft drift with the up diagonal, probably for comfort. To my knowledge, up vs down soft drifting only matters in 2 situations:
      1. Throwing an item forward or backward while soft drifting
      2. Sinking vs floating while soft drifting
      (for #2, I can only think of specifically big blue's last turn path switch, and piranha plant cove's first turn shortcut, both of which you would prefer to soft drift downwards)
      I guess having all 4 diagonal notches would be ideal, but I just aim above the lower notch whenever I need to soft drift downwards, which is almost never.

    • @Hegna1
      @Hegna1 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@Shortcat321 Yeah that makes sense. I wasn't sure if it would be necessary (I definitely mostly play Kart casually, but enjoying learning more about game systems), but it just seemed like an interesting option after hearing about trying to hit certain points consistently. I can definitely understand it being overkill though.

    • @Jetliner
      @Jetliner 11 месяцев назад +2

      Common misconception is that there is a single softdrifting angle. That's not the case. You want access to the full range of angles between 90 and 45 and notching would be counterintuitive to this purpose

    I use a pro controller with a custom faceplate that has gamecube notches for soft drifting. This allows me to soft drift easier. I would like to always have motion gliding, but from my experience online, it doesn't make me win any more or less, so I enjoy the motion tricking for stability in my own performance :) If players are better than me they will still find ways to smack me.

      @Shortcat321  11 месяцев назад +12

      That's a cool mod! Also I respect that decision, missing a trick can be frustrating.
      And that's true, the time saved from motion glider is not big enough to always matter. But the royal raceway shroomless cut saves about the same amount of time and I do it every lap anyway. And I do have several clips in this video where motion glider definitely mattered a lot. As with any small time save, it's more about the probability of it helping you, and also stacking time saves to ultimately be so far ahead that maybe you dodge an entire boomerang thanks to it.

    5:40 Actually, you CAN disable motion glider after you finished the race. You had a few seconds (about 1 or 2?) to open the settings menu and disable it when you finished the race. Or you can click Y in the course selection to go back to the vehicle selection and disable it there (But of course, it's not optimal)

    as a pro controller player, i might consider switching. but what’s funny is that at 14:30 when he was explaining why motion glider is sooooooo good, HE LITERALLY MISSED A TRICK LOL but either way, i consider your opinion very accurate because when i tune into a jpg stream (jpg uses a pro controller) almost every time i watch his streams, he messes up a motion glider and regrets it. obviously jpg is legions better than you, (no offense but he’s literally top 300 in the world) he still messes up because of his playing style so i find this video extremely helpful. PS: IM YOUR #1 FAN AND NOBODY WILL PROVE OTHERWISE

    5:05 it seems part of mario kart wii's Dpad tricks (you'd do ramp tricks by pressing a direction on the dpad) for the gamecube controller and classic controller are kind of reappearing.
    17:00 the grey plug is extra power for rumble, i'd say plug it in if you like having rumble.

  • @selfloathinggameing
    @selfloathinggameing 11 месяцев назад +4

    You did mention that Smash players prefer GC controllers, but could Melee-style controller mods help with Mario Kart? They use custom notches to get consistent max wavedashes or shield drops, this could make softdrift consistent without having to mess with stick calibration every time you plug a controller in.

    • @Shortcat321
      @Shortcat321  11 месяцев назад +1

      Carving notches should work, but I'm not an expert on that. For the GCC the only advantage I can think of is to get soft drifting on both the up diagonal and down diagonal notches. The reset method only lets you pick up or down, not both. It matters for very niche situations like throwing an item, or floaty tracks where holding down vs up matters

    • @Coco-qy6st

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Mario kart pros in Japan are using pro controller because of mtja(mini turbo jump action). They charge a mini turbo in a trickable region and release the mt and trick immediately after. I think this is easier to do with shake tricking because the drift button is the same as the trick button and you can’t really press it that quick after a releasing a mt.

    I have modified the triggers on one of my GCN controllers so they will act more like a digital trigger than the stock analog ones. It’s also worth noting that GCN controllers can be used with MKWii, MKSC (with Game Boy Player on the GCN), and MKDD, so if you play either of those games as well, you’ll be better off with a trigger modification. I just use trigger plugs, but if you want a true digital trigger in your GCN controller, you will need it modded on a hardware level. Sites like Battle Beaver offer these services, but they don’t come cheap. Trigger plugs and the appropriate screwdrivers are $20 at most, while specialized GCN controllers can cost $200+. Last thing, you don’t need a GCN controller to achieve motionless motion gliding. You can also just get a wired third party controller from Power A or PDP, and the results will be the same as using a GCN controller. Heck, it maybe even better to use a USB controller over GCN because the adapter does add latency. That, and some of these third party wired controllers may have assignable buttons on the bottom of the controller. Most of them have two if they have them, but I know the Fusion by Power A has four. That means if you have a Fusion controller, you can map all of the inputs of the d pad on the bottom buttons, and you don't have to do crazy shenanigans with your hands.

    Thanks to this video I decided to grab both my GameCube controller and my adapter, and gave all of this a try. The problem is, it's been so long since I last used my GC controller that I'm not used to it, so I tried using my Wii Classic Pro controller (which has the same joysticks as the GC controller) and 8BitDo's GBros adapter, and after a bit of practice I felt it was pretty comfortable! It's not as easy to "reset" the controller as you can't just reset it, you have to unplug and re-plug it, but once you get just the right angle it works really well and I honestly prefer it to the GC controller.
    Anyways sorry to write such a long comment lol

    Shake tricking is just too important to me. It's not just about being able to get consistent tricks on difficult tricking platforms (although that is especially helpful in wavy sections). It's also useful for consistently tricking as early as possible. As a side note, I remap my L button to X when playing with the pro controller because I always felt like it was really awkward to press X every time you need to look back. I use Y instead of A for accelerate because it's way easier to hold down Y + B than it is to hold down A + B for brake drifting, and it is completely impossible to hold down Y + B + X to brake drift and look in the mirror at the same time unless you remap to L. Even if you aren't break drifting, Y + X is a really awkward combo of buttons to hold down. I really recommend it, it's super nice!

    @JacobPDeIiNoNi 11 месяцев назад +2

    To be honest I think having a consistent setup for soft drifting is still an advantage at top level. Like yes the pros are great at the soft drifting angle, but being great at it isn’t as good as having a 100% consistent setup. It’s the same thing as shake tricking, the pros are great at timing their tricks even on inconsistent sections, but having a way to guarantee you don’t mess up is still an advantage

    • @Shortcat321
      @Shortcat321  11 месяцев назад +1

      Technically yes, having soft drifting notches is better than no soft drifting notches. The difference compared to shake tricking is how often this advantage will apply.
      Being just a few degrees less soft than optimal soft drifting will probably never affect you online, or maybe super rarely. I guess in time trials it matters more.
      Shake tricking lets you hit some tricks that feel kind of impossible without shake tricking. And if you truly aren't allowed to trick (missed the trickable region, or you're not going fast enough), then with shake tricking at least you won't hop and lose even more time.

    • @JacobPDeIiNoNi
      @JacobPDeIiNoNi 11 месяцев назад

      @@Shortcat321 that makes sense, i suppose messing up a soft drift isn’t as bad for top players since even if they don’t get the angle perfect, they’re probably going to be so close the difference is minimal. Whereas with hop tricking missing one trick loses you a good amount of time no matter how close you were to getting it right

    Phob GameCube controllers are a good third party option. Better than the Nintendo ones actually. It's an open source hardware project originally made for the Super Smash Bros Melee community to be able to produce high quality GameCube controllers while addressing the official GameCube controller's shortcomings.
    That said, they are expensive if you don't make them yourself but it's worth the price imo.
