Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a 2018 crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd. and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, succeeding Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The game follows the series' traditional style of gameplay: controlling one of various characters, players must use differing attacks to weaken their opponents and knock them out of an arena. It features a wide variety of game modes, including a campaignfor a single-player and multiplayer versus modes. Ultimate includes every playable character from previous Super Smash Bros. games-ranging from Nintendo's mascots to characters from third-party franchises-and several newcomers.
The game's pre-production phase began in December 2015, following the development of 3DS/Wii U's downloadable content (DLC). Series creator and director Masahiro Sakurai returned along with Bandai Namco Studios and Sora, the studios that developed the previous game; the studios' return sped up the preparation process. Sakurai's goal with Ultimate was to include every character from previous games despite the various development and licensing problems this would cause. A number of well-known video game music composers contributed to the soundtrack, with Hideki Sakamoto writing the main theme.
Nintendo confirmed development of Ultimate in March 2018 and announced it at E3 the following June. It was released worldwide on December 7, 2018, and will be supported after release with DLC adding new characters, stages, and music. Ultimate received universal acclaim, with reviewers applauding its sheer amount of content and fine-tuning of existing Smashgameplay elements. Some critics called it the best game in the series.
*Note3: It's now Feb 2020 and even with the Byleth update, this method still works.
*Note2: If you find the "running around not necessary " it's most likely that you've already played other modes and built up you "in-battle distance."
*Note1: if you stop encountering characters, do another 20-minute run battle as explained in the video.

Hey just a quick note if you get the challenger screen and he beats you there's gonna be a new menu in "Games and more" looking like a door. Click it and face the challenger again. Boom doesn't get to the bottom of the list. Thank me later 18 days till i get the game😢
10/31/2022 The method still works.
Here are the steps resumed in the video for thoses that didn't understand:
1. Edit a new ruleset with 1 stock, 20 minutes limit timer, no items & no stage hazard.
2. Play that ruleset on a stage like Battlefield, and run from one side to the other back and forth. When the timer reaches 30 seconds, kill your opponent.
3. You should get a "Challenger Approach" screen now, defeat it.
4. When you get back on the stage select menu in the game, close the game from the HOME menu and reopen it.
5. Play the ruleset again, but this time, just SD (Self-Destruct). You should get a new "Challenger Approach" screen.
6. Repeat step 4 & 5 as long as you keep getting "Challenger Approach" screens. If not, repeat from step 2 to step 5.

@@yoloaco5949 are you closing the game fully after each time it pops up? Also you have to wait till the stage select screen comes up. Then fully close the game. I tried with just going to Home Screen then back to the game and it didn’t work so I had to restart the game

Lmao. There's an easier way. As soon as you have a challenger approaching screen beat that character. As soon as the screen comes up that shows the character you just unlocked close the game down. Start it back up create a stock match with one life. Start the match and suicide. Another new challenger will approach repeat the earlier steps. Can do this over and over and over. No need for a ten minute match or wait time. And no need to change the language or any other goofy steps

@@matthewsobers4402 Yes. There actually just is an ingame 15min timer for the " A new challenger approaches" event, which gets reset everytime you restart the game.
+Matthew Sobers i can confirm that it still works after the most recent update. But I'm sure you didn't want confirmation from the person that made the comment. Lol. But I assure you it works. Worked for me up until the 69th character. Not sure why it stopped tbh.

+Acta tbh I put this message up on a lot of videos. Was just trying to help people out. I didn't see the point in as 12 minute video with 3 ads explaining a bunch of different ways. People that are searching for a quick method usually want the fastest method. So I put this message up to save time.
I think I'm gonna go with the classic mode method. It's more fun than running for 20 minutes (at least imo) and won't take too long. It'll also give me a chance to test out all the characters and see who I want to main this time around.

I would but i got family coming over and we plan to play smash together so on both systems we must do the running method due to time constraints. Dumb system but there it is.
Exactly what im doing, since im new to the industry i will play classic mode from the first to the last and unlock every character plus experimenting on all of them to see which one i’ll main!
Also at 2:25 at the bottom that line starts with random, but there isn't an option to choose random for classic mode, so what do I do there?
Yup im doing that
1) Open the game and go to Smash.
2) Select a normal game with the easiest settings (1, unlimited, No, No, 1, No, etc). (Save the rules to choose again later).
3) Start a match and lose on purpose (Throw yourself out of stage).
4) A new character will appear, just win and he'll be yours.
5) Close the game (Home button, X then close)
Repeat and profit !

For those that have trouble beating the challengers, if you go to games and more from the menu, in the lower right corner there will be a little yellow door that says challengers approach. If you select it you can refight and unlock those you missed a lot quicker than going back through the whole method. It is only there if you have lost to a challenger though

10 minutes of fight time will also allow you to unlock 1 challenger at a time. I have been setting my fights to 10 min time limits and playing with friends. After each match there will be an encounter. Definitely slower, but still an option.
It works a heck of a lot better and more guaranteed than this guys method

I've done the 20 min run twice now and it stopped after megaman. Am I missing something? I also just started.

I used this guide and within half an hour I had already unlocked Ness, Zelda, Bowser, Pit, Inkling, Villager, Marth, Young Link, Wii Fit Trainer, Ice Climbers and Captain Falcon.

tip: the mario bros stage is the best for building distance since running at one side of the stage brings you right back to the other side for an infinite loop, meaning you don’t have to stop and change direction.

Still works in Summer 2021. I got them all now. It gets more difficult for them to appear though, for the last 5 characters. So I had to do that 20 min run treak four times to get 2 appear characters each run. So I got bored and for last 2, I tried the classic mode method on easy and they appeared. Thanks Austin ✌️

Just one side note: Do NOT change the name of the player you are playing with, or if you do not have any names added, do not create a new one. This will reset the distance count and you will need to start again.

@@pascualh101 no other content creator ive seen has mentioned the distance traveled part. and the ones i have seen all copied from ign in some way saying changing the language would help unlock faster but its really soft resetting to get back the 10 min lockout
Most of this information is inaccurate. There is no specific order to unlock characters. If there was, unlocking them would be easier. Not to mention that this man is not the source of this information.

It's faster if you go to the Mario Bros Stage, and use the warp pipes at the bottom, then all you have to do is hold one direction for 20-minutes, instead of having to turn around (or instead of holding it down, tie the stick to face the direction)

@@FryedPidgey No you cant, just have your character facing against the pipe, it does more of a speed walk than running but just tie like a rubber band on the joy stick or something that makes the player stay on that direction.

How to do this after 1/1/19 patch:
Spirits > Adventure > Any Saved Game > Exit Adventure > Challenger Approaches > Defeat Challenger > Close Software > Repeat

@Adrift and happy it worked for me and I got all of the characters in one day and how I got it was way easier by closing the application on the screen that says the character has joined, then make sure you have a 1 stock mode ready and when it starts walk off the edge to fight your next unlock and repeat the process again until you have the characters that you want
I skipped Challenger Approach after I close the software.

What’s up Austin from 5 years ago. Coming to this playlist because with nothing new in Pokemon for the foreseeable future, I’m going to try and 100% Smash for the first time in my life. Not sure if you’ll see this given it’s May 13th 2024, but here we go brother.
If it stops working it’s probably because you’ve already encountered all the fighters. If this is the case, there is a mode in games and more at the bottom right of the screen with a small golden trophy icon where you can rematch the fighters if you failed to beat them the first time you encountered them. HOWEVER. If you lose to a fighter again, you have to wait some time before you can challenge them again using that same mode.

I found a quicker way to do this. Do all the steps he says but when you run for 20 mins use fox. He can run fast and can save time on running,also any fast fighter. I use fox and ran for 7 mins and when I tried his method of killing yourself then battle then close out the game, I was able to get more than 21 characters with fox running for 7 mins. Tell me if this help go faster.

Use sonic
Sonic is the fastest character, followed by captain falcon, little mac, sheik THEN fox.
Would if I die when you're getting the character but then it moves on to the next one when you play it again
So using fox is 3 characters a minute, and there are 63 unlockable characters, I'm not counting the first 8 or dlc, so it would take about 21 minutes? Idk if that's right, but I'm gonna say about 30 minutes just using fox
The fastest way I found is just do 1 stock fall off the map, you’ll meet your foe. After unlocking it, close out the game completely, then start it up again. Keep repeating it. It works everytime. No wait time needed.
this still works on 5/8/2024 but i found that if you reopen the game too fast it doesn’t work. i usually count to 10 Mississippi before reopening and then i get a challengers approach.

Here in July 2024 and still works. Make sure you do the full 20 to begin with. If you lose to a challenger, go to games and more, gonna be an icon that looks like a door, can just battle until you win to unlock without exiting
What I do, and hopefully it helps someone, is:
1: play story mode for ten minutes
2: start a smash match with one stock
3: jump off the map ( doesn’t matter if you win)
4: and a new foe will appear
5: after you beat it, when the “xxx has joined” splash screen comes up, reset the game
6: keep doing it until you unlock all or you die.
Ps. If you fail you will have to restart. This is just my way of doing it and it works 🤗
The Bliter that’s upwards of 600 minutes to unlock all the characters. That’s over 10 hours. You could get every character playing regular games in that time.

Easy way to rematch a fighter: when u loose to a fighter, just press home button right after u loose (don’t go back to the stage selection) and restart the game by closing it and start it and then play one match with one stock to suicide and finally the same fighter will appear ready to battle! Xd

I just tried this method out and worked. Pro tip: make a 90 min match on falcons jet map. Have both characters on the bottom floor running against the wall. Place your controller upside down on with a little pressure on the left analog stick and it will basically be auto run. Sometimes it may do a special move because of the right analog stick so just be careful with that. But other wise i just watched a movie came back with them still running and knocked the other player off. Started unlocking all characters. Good luck everyone.

@@Moriumx Make a rule set that has 90 min length, 1 stock, no items or anything. You need two controllers for this or a friend online who also needs to this. Start a match with that rule set and select the star fox corneria stage. You can't do this against the cpu because they will fight you and end the match early. I used two controllers. There is two sections to that map, the top level that is a long flat plane, and the part where you move to the right and has a short platform. There is a wall there on the left. Have both characters jump down and run towards that wall for 89 minutes. You can just hold both controllers and use two fingers to make both controllers run but that would get annoying. I just layed my controllers upside down so that there is some pressure on the left analog stick to make it move itself. You have to make sure the right analog stick isn't being touched tho because it can do a special attack and hit one of the players. Then I just left it alone running against the wall. for 89 minutes came back and had one character jump off the map to lose their stock and end the match. I honestly don't know how much clearer I can explain this method.
@@Edge21596 If you lost to the character you were trying to unlock then all you have to do is go to games and more and there will be 2 doors to the bottom right Corner. Then you can fight that challenger you lost too. Which would explain why you have not encountered any more characters because you have not beaten that challenger you lost too. Hope this helped you.
@@Edge21596 Also you are not suppose to walk to the left and right for 20 minutes. You are suppose to (RUN!!!) And the guy said run side to side for 20 Minutes do not knock off the second player standing there. And after running for 20 minutes make sure you knock off the other player when the timer is at 49 seconds.

Only KINDA worked for me. Did the 20 minute run around with 2 players on Bridge of Eldin. For a while I got a bunch of characters unlocked FAST. However after like 35 characters, I kept on having to redo the 20 minute match just to get steps in and rinse and repeat. Took me all day. I think it helps if you use the Bunny Ear item

Edit - I’ve also tried Brandon Ybarra’s method below in the comment section but it didn’t work for me. Followed the instructions all the way. I did start a new game data for this so maybe that’s why it didn’t work for me because I didn’t have any “in-battle distance” like described in the video. So maybe that’s probably why Brandon’s method only works for some people for who’ve already built up “in-battle distance”. Just my thoughts, I could also be wrong.

May 2024, still works! Thank you so much. I had to sell my switch and couldn't get a new one in time so I had to restart all over again. I didn't want to keep playing classic mode so tried this. If this isn't working for people, you have to RUN back and forward for the entire 19:30 minutes, not just afk. I just put on a show. I already had half the characters unlocked so I didn't have to do another 20 minute run.

Oct 30, 2020 - v9.0.1 - Still works. First time I tried it, I got nothing because I didn't listen to the entire video. You *HAVE* to do the setup for it to work - run around a battlefield with a coop partner for 20 minutes to log your distance. Only then will the restart game, 1 stock battle where you die quickly trick will work. I was up to 40 characters before the trick but managed to unlock the rest in around 30 minutes. It kept giving me nonstop challengers until the end bypassing the 10 min wait. THANK YOU!

My experience with this method worked for the first 40 or something character I guess but then it stopped working after repeating the 20 minutes game. So I decided to work my way through classic mode and unlock characters that I desired according to the unlock chain. Eventually, while also playing some regular games in the Smash option, I unlocked all characters except for like 4 more characters in just 2 days! So don't be discouraged from trying this method while also enjoying some regular matches in between to hone your skills (as a newbie in smash) and playing the classic mode to unlock desired characters. A few commenters messaged about the character challenge icon at the bottom left in the games and more screen. This is the best option after doing the 20 min run to continuously battle the challengers. You can even rematch them. I unlocked all the characters in no time after the run.

In the distance part you can play smash for 20 minutes then when its up you will unlock ness then when your done go to the home menu press X then it restarts the 10 minute cool down. Then what you want to do is make it one stock but make it a rule time does not matter. And all you to do is to self destruct while SDing. Then the next character pops up when you defeat him or her keep doing it untill your done with the roster and have fun everyone.
Also for the 20 minutes you need to move so i say you could use the bunny ears

This method no longer works. I did a 20-min 1-stock match and ran around the whole time. Only got one character. Quitting game and doing 1-stock match did not result in any more new characters.

It’s easier and faster to just play classic mode with different characters until they are all unlocked doesn’t take more than 8 minutes to finish the classic mode and skip the bonus game just jump off immediately instead of wasting time.

Literally do a smash battle against cpu as soon as you open up the game. A challenger will appear after the first battle. After you defeat the challenger, close the app all the way open it back up then do another classic battle. You can get 2 challengers roughly every 9-14 minutes
I already unlocked ryu, cap. falcon, peach, pit, ice climbers and a lot more i don’t know yet.

You can, go to the games and more and new charecter thingy will be on the bottom right on the page. Every fight is a new character

An AFK version I found was to play on the Mario Bros. map and tape down the joycon to a side so that the character was always running and being brought to the other side by the pipes.
You don't have to do any of this.
Open the game. Go to Spirit, then adventure load in. Then back out once on the adventure screen all the way to the main menu then you'll be challenged.
After the fight is over home button close software then open back up. Do the spirit. Then adventure tech again amd you'll have all characters unlocked within a hour

Long story short. Just create a game in smash for 20 minutes and turn off items. Play the whole 20 minutes by moving back and forth and the last minute attack your second player to repeatedly K.O them. Once done create a new game for 1 minute, items off with a second controller. K.O the 2nd player till the game ends then you should get a foe attack. Once you win press home, relaunch the game then launch the 1 minute game again ,complete it to get another foe attack. Just repeat the 1 minute game after restarting the game after each foe attack.
