WIth the Duelist controller, I could finally rev my Smash up and feel the flow. Nothing like card games on motorcycles, but anyone who doesn't use the best is a 3rd rate player with 4th rate equipment
unfortunately its a short hop attack button, which you can just do by pressing the x and a button together. I would be more interested if it was a solely short hop button.
I want to see Retro Fighters make MeleeGC Controller with the following features. - 2.4 GHz Wireless (similar to Wavebird Controller) - Rechargeable Battery Pack with USB-C port - Bigger D-Pad
Definitely won't be using the S button for Smash attacks out of competitive pride but a short hop button has been a LONG time coming. I'm sure plenty of people would have something negative to say about not doing short hops the old fashioned way but I've always found it odd that there's no option to take one of the two jump buttons that do the exact same thing and make it a short hop button. I Just think it's weird that there are three different jump input options and no short hop button option.
You could always buy the RetroFighters Warrior Adapter. That device lets you use a legitimate GameCube controller on either PC or Switch. I had this and the 8bitdo version. Got rid of the 8bit in favor of the RetroFighters branded one, mostly for its Wavebird support.
Does it have analogue triggers? (Sorry if that was mentioned in the vid, I can't remember). Or differently worded: does this function as a general GC controller alternative or is it just meant to optimize Smash controls at the cost of regular GC controls?
@@bland9876 no, I'm positive I'm thinking about the Duelist. There's still articles online from then talking about production being canceled temporarily. Plus, I preordered the SN30 Pro+ on Amazon as soon as it was available, so if it happened to that controller too I never found out about it.
@@paulnovacek3715 yep my comment was half joking because it did happen with the sn30 pro+ Basically they showed off the pro Plus somewhere briefly and then it just disappeared and they never mentioned it and it wasn't on their website or anything until like almost a year later than they announced it and i jumped for joy cuz i like ps layout.
@@bland9876 Oh cool. I'm a big fan of 8BitDo's products, and one thing I remember is that they originally made a Pro grip for the original SN30 Pro (not the plus) that gave it modern style handles, but scrapped it in favor of a full-fledged controller. Only insiders got to see it so very few pictures of it exist online.
@@paulnovacek3715 i have seen people 3d print there own grips for the controller. Especially the wired one. Personally I think the wired one should have had handles but oh well.
I hope the controller gets compatible with the PS2 Defender receiver, since I wasn't amused at the Retro Fighters Defender not having Xbox-style analog stick placements.
That's fair. Though personally, I don't mind either layout. Both tend to be interchangeable to me. I guess I do prefer the PS layout cause the dpad is a little more comfortable maybe. But I don't have a lot of controllers with the xbox layout that has a good dpad. So it's hard to tell if I prefer the layout or not
As nice as it is to have extra options for our Switch this controller is a very hard pass for me. I like the shape and all, but if you're going to replicate a GameCube style layout to play Smash Bros with then you need to make the face buttons in the exact layout of the controller its trying to replicate. This one doesn't do that at all, its layout is that of a pro controller with an extra button for certain moves and an oversized A and B button. Having turbo and a button dedicated to using attack combinations also makes it illegal for tourney use so its not going to get much love from the hardcore Smash community. That's really a shame to, I love Retro Fighters controllers for a bunch of systems and this one to me is the very first one that I feel truly missed its mark. :(
This thing seems like a cool concept until you realize all of the features are very easy to preform in the first place. Like you could just have smash stick on instead of tilt stick on or just do what me and a lot of other competitive players do and just A plus a direction for tilts. Also if you didn’t know just press A and jump at the same time to do a shorthop aerial. And just press 2 jump button at the same time to do a shorthop. But it seems hard to do on this controller compared to like a pro controller because of the button placement
A lot of us already know that but why not just have a dedicated short hop button instead of two jump buttons that do the exact same thing? It's like they couldn't think of a purpose for one of the buttons and just put a jump input twice so every button had something assigned to it.
I was really hoping they were gonna make the controller buttons look like the Gamecube. With X and Y wrapped around the A. This looks no different than the N64 controller with a big A button. I'm disappointed. Especially cause the Retrofighter D-pads are awful.
To be honest this seems kinda pointless to me. I would have much preferred this have been for an original GameCube so that we could have a good wavebird alternative. We already have good GameCube style controllers for switch. Also a lot of these extra functions aren't very useful, and not tournament legal anyways.
Why does the tournament thing even matter if you're not someone who goes to tournaments? Just have fun with it. Plus you don't have to use the S button just because it's there.
@@mf_dva late but someone who doesn't go to tournaments I feel like typically isn't the type of person to buy a controller for just smash. But hey I could be wrong. Also nice that retro fighters is coming out with an actual GameCube controller now cause I really do like their products.
@@zydomic3962 I mean if you own a GameCube controller just for Smash than you basically did buy one just for Smash. Nobodybis realistically spending the most time on their actual GameCube in almost 2022. I got Duelist in the male yesterday and still out of somewhat pride and considering myself semi competitive despite not going to tournaments I've all together been avoiding the S button. Except for one I instinctively move my thumb upwards trying to jump because I'm used to pressing Y.
This controller made me fart (kinda loud too) don't understand the button layout and stick design when it kinda looks like GC but doesn't match the original pad, as well as digital looking triggers. Feels like a cash grab on gamecube nostalgia while releasing a generic modern controller

Wasn't this thing cancelled? What caused it to be uncancelled?
The fact that it can wake the console, and at $30 usd, is a win for me.

I just pictured a controller with a D-pad the size of the Xbox emblem on the Duke.and I can't stop laughing.
@@enriquepinero707 I was talking about for Nintendo GameCube not Nintendo Switch. Sorry for confusion.
Might have to pick up one of these for that Nickelodean game when I get it on Steam.

I would of loved this for Gamecube emulation on pc if it followed the Gamecube layout better with the button placement

Interested as well. But since its for the switch, i pretty sure they are digital.
Probably the latter. Hey, if it gets sweaty Melee tryhards to stop destroying GameCube controllers, that's a good thing.
Thanks for the quick review. I'll be picking one of these up! P.S. You sound just like John C. Reilly. "I'm gonna wreck it"!!
I like the idea of using this for Dolphin to get a mix of the Xbox-style feel for the pad and GC-style button layout.
Yep! I will get this for my SteamDeck for sure to play GC/Wii games.
Yeah, but I mainly care on PS2 support since the Defender doesn't have Xbox-style analog sticks compared to the Duelist.
I remember a year or two ago this was on their website and they mysteriously removed it. Glad to see it's finally coming!

This needs to be able to connect with their GCBlade gamecube receiver!
Super helpful video! Boutta go buy one now
I needed that for skyward sword it really feels alot better when you swing sword using direction on c stick
Btw can you remap the controls?
The switch has a built in button remap thing in sister settings for controllers connected to it, tho I’m not sure how it will work with the s button.
Dang that looks sweet 😍
Thanks for showing it off with no bullshit or skits
Got that Hefty heft
Any comparison to the gamecube smash bro version ?. Awesome review. Thanks.
Thanks. 👍🏻
I wish they added that weight to the brawler 64- weird they didn't.
I have the wireless version and it has a metal weight.

How does the controller work with Nintendo64 online games?
Are the triggers analog or digital?
Seems its not up yet. Probably gonna wait until its on Amazon
Nice 👍
very nice!
Does anyone know if this has motion controls?
Are those analog triggers?
Do the analog sticks click in?
WHY NO EXTRA PORT FOR THE GAMECUBE MISSED OPPERTUNITY
Wasn't the Kickstarter for this exact controller cancelled?
Itnwas cancelled but they continued development. I guess they felt they didn't need the Kickstarter.
Does it work well on pc?
