Thanks so much for featuring the Fixture S1, Kevin! We’re happy to see how much you’re enjoying the mount and how well it works with the GameCube Nintendo Switch Pro Controller :)
Personally im still hoping/waiting for 8bitduo to make their own wireless GameCube controller that has rumble and an adapter to work on the original GameCube... I have a mighty need, and having wireless rumble for the og console would make it sell like hot cakes!
I also wanna see them make a modernized version of the Saturn controller. I'd be very interested in seeing a high quality modern controller with 6 face buttons.
@@doorbox788 no vibration on the of wavebird, We've always had missing features on wireless GameCube controllers so it would be nice to get the full functionality back.
I would love this controller to be legal in Ultimate events. I believe it wont be because of the extra button but honestly I don't think it is that different that the current in game macros I also love what you said Kevin about maybe pushing the button layout closer to the GC controller. If I had that button layout on a pro controller frame I would be so freaking happy
I've personally never understood the point of having two jump buttons in Smash, Nintendo should just make one of them a short hop button instead, it'll make advanced movements more accessible for casual players. Personally, on this controller, I have mixed feelings about the weird 5-button layout, why not just go to a 6-button layout instead? Another thing I've questioned in the past, which I hope Microsoft may be paving the way of change for with the XBS controller design, is why not have an 8-way D-pad? So many games use diagonals as a form of input, why do we not make 45° diagonals their own button, this would also allow for eight additional mixed inputs at the 22.5° diagonals, which would allow for double the functionality of the current D-pad design. In the case of games like Smash, this would almost entirely omit the need for the octagonal gate on the stick, as the game would more than likely be entirely playable with an 8-way D-pad.
How many years has smash as a franchise existed with two distinct kinds of jump and two distinct jump buttons, but no option to match each kind of jump to its own button? So frustrating.
Because not only will mapping a dedicated short hop button go against smashes simple design concept that attracts its massive casual audience but having a dedicated button for short hopping and full hopping will just add another button to account for Eg: gamecube controllers have 3 shoulder buttons and most players map 1 of them to jump with the other 2 being shield and grab Adding a dedicated button for short hopping will not only cripple new players learning curves but upset the balance of buttons being used.
Rivals of Aether lets you map any of jump (natural, like smash's), dedicated full hop, and dedicated short hop, as well as having dedicated attack and smash buttons by default (which can be consolidated like smash does).
@@Mars-pw4iw this is the worst take I've ever seen. Most new players won't be able to pull off short hops, so simply letting a spate button do it would make it easier for everyone. I imagine on the regular jump button you'd still be able to short hop with a brief press too. At the very least a short hop button in the options would be nice like tilt attacks on the c stick. Still its a moot point because pressing both jump buttons at the same time will only short hop, and this has not "crippled" any new players.
Just want to say how much i love your videos. You are so entertaining and informative to watch. I wish I could watch a 30 minute show from you every week
Finally a decent review of the controller. The other were basically unboxing vids and not much else. Like a few others have said, I would have probably jumped on it if it retained the gc button layout with modern controller esthetics. Nintendo should have just coded short hop as an option instead of having 2 jump buttons. They already made it a shortcut, why not just make it a regular button option. Hoping retro releases an actual wired GC controller with modern esthetics with no extra gimmicks (maybe an extra z trigger)
They did just announce a wireless GC controller with modern aesthetics that's Gamecube compatible... Unfortunately it's using an inline analog stick design like a playstation controller, which is fine for some people and great for 2d platformers and fighting games... But most major Gamecube games really assume you're not even using the d-pad, so why they didn't just use the same stick layout as this controller is beyond me.
This is a cool idea! However, I think the S button storing macros is going to get it banned from tournaments, which may really hold the controller back if it is targeted at the audience who are buying GCCs. Many smash players really like to assign grab or shield to a face button too, I think if the S button was a simple remappable button, it would be a much more viable controller in a competitive setting I feel
Unfortunately you're almost definitely correct. Not to mention that no one ever uses wireless controllers at tournaments anyways, too difficult to re-pair when the console you were previously connected to is still in range (assuming in person tournaments). Also, The only way I could see the S button being just a remappable button is if it took the place of the left shoulder button and going back to the retro GameCube design of not having a left shoulder.
@@KyleDavis328 Yeah I'm with you, it's verrryy annoying when you are trying to play on a tournament set up and a random wireless controller is connected but there is no way to know which one or disconnect easily. @@MerryBlind I, unfortunately, can't quite answer your question. It does have the notches, but the rails... There are tons of Switch games that could do with analog triggers. Especially racing! Very impressive for £21 to have: wireless, rumble, gyro and can boot up the console. Do they make other switch controllers with normal button layout?
I do think the gates are cool, it might allow for some sliding downtilts or simpler wavebounces. However, the s button seems like a waste. There’s already a ton of options to use a smash attack (including a+b smash). Plus, you’ll be stunting yourself if you never learn to short hop, and three frames of a press lets your fingers move to the next button quicker. You’ll only ever need three face buttons, if you have rb as grab, and rt as jump (for attack cancels)
I think if you told someone that all it does is let you short hop, they wouldn't even care. That mechanic on its own is not going to make you significantly better in any way.
You could mod your pro controller by buying an octagonal gate shell case at extremerate from either their website or their amazon page, I did it and I'm loving it
Well i ll tell you guys, that the power A gamecube controller for smash bros/nintendo switch is absolutely fantastic for the 25 dollars they charge for it. Thats the best gamecube replica ive tried, but i might give this a shot
I disagree! I've tried it in a store, and it feels nothing like an original GameCube controller whatsoever. The buttons feel different and the thumbsticks feel light and cheap. I don't understand why everyone is so lyrical about it.
that extra button would probably make it not tournament legal. really not sure why they added the short hop aerial function, that basically ensures it not being tournament legal
The story behind this controller was one hell of a trip. Retro Fighters (a predominantly kickstarter-driven company) ran a campaign for the Duelist back in June 2020 and even met it's own goal of $13,000. But then cut the campaign short (presumably within first few days or weeks) citing planned revisions based off feedback. They currently don't even list the Duelist in their own store, but I've found 2 online retailers that do. There are a number of videos on RUclips promoting and reviewing the Duelist - which may have been creator prototypes. But just a week ago (2021 Sept) Retro Fighters released a product video of the Duelist. This feels like either a wildly botched product release or some sort of scam. But for $30 I'll take my chances. YMMV It'd be cool though if someone actually dug into this.
UPDATE: 2 weeks later and it looks like RetroFighters now has the Duelist in-stock over on their store. My controller came in from Stone Age Gamers without hiccup and the controller appears to be in working order. No bugs.
It's insane that Nintendo could just add a remap feature in game to map a dedicated short hop button but won't. This controller looks interesting, I wonder if it would be legal in tournament
Same also I’ve only recently appreciated how the HD rumble is used in smash. It kinda gives you that subtle feedback like “okay that’s what it feels like to input an up tilt vs an up smash”
i got one of the power a gcn switch controllers, and it felt really good to use that controller for other games. It's unfortunate though how cheap they're made, can definitely tell its 3rd party with the way the plastic feels and how light it is, and it really didn't last long before the analog quit working.
You COULD argue that the central A/primary style didn't catch on because it doesn't fit every games layouts. But in a world where free button mapping is becoming the norm I don't see that being as big an issue.
Only problem with this controller is that it's illegal for smash tournaments. The S button is a macro and those are banned in all brackets, so I wouldn't recommend it for smash if you're at all interested in competing
I may have missed it, but I dont think you mentioned that it has a gamecube adapter and you can play it like a wireless gamecube controller in place of the wavebird.
As much as the analog triggers with the tactile digital stop were great at the time, IMO their travel is just way to long to be useful anywhere that doesn't need analog input. Super Mario Sunshine? Amazing. Any Smash Bros. game after Melee? too much.
The layout might also be good for indie games that lazily port it with the Microsoft layout. So A is jump when it should be B. It's a little awkward with a normal layout, but this layout looks ideal
Unfortunately the exact opposite is true; this controller is banned from tournament play because the S button is multiple button inputs bound to one button and those macros are banned
I think if they went with the same ABXY layout as the original controller, this would have been an instant purchase for me But I like their take on the overall outside shape of the controller
This controller was clearly meant for casual smash or local fun with friends. All of y’all that’s hating on this controller are missing out for sure. I have one and the control functions are solid !
Yeah, Nintendo was even considering doing it at first, but decided not to. I emailed them asking about it and they said something like "We are considering adding universal Bluetooth controller support". Sucks. I wonder if it's something that can be added via homebrew.
This would be perfect for me when I played smash. I hate the GameCube controller for not having digital buttons on the rear, but I hated not having the gates when playing with the pro
3rd party controller that looks like a gamecube one, tends to break down faster. as much as i love the gamecube controller, i love the wii u pro controller more, but just wish it have those octogonal gates like the wii and gamecube controller has. when playing "smash bros, for 3ds and wii u", i have to make the "y" button = special moves and "b" button = attack, similar to "smash 64" where the "b" button is on top of the "a" button on the n64 controller. also used it like that in "smash bros. ultimate" (never like that version much) and on dolphin emulator for "melee" and "brawl".
I know this is random but I would love to see a company make one of those OG fat Xbox controllers. For people with big hands (or long fingers like me) it was great 👍🏾
@@snichelsticks8653 @MerryBlind It is incredibly high quality. Checkout my teardown to see for yourselves. I don't like this controller because of the button layout, but it's quality is absolutely high.
switch pro controller is perfect except for the sticks. if you add the omnidirectional sticks from the gamecube controller (and optional paddles) it would be the perfect controller
A big improvement would have been making the c stick a proper same sized stick as the left one. There's literally zero point in making the c stick smaller on any level.
@@blackghostcat that didn't happen on the orginal. You could mod it and put a second stick like the left one. And it never got in the way. Not for me anyway.
Finally got it used on smash ultimate no problems later I’m going to try this on other games but for shooting games I’d use my other controller why turbo button so you blast the enemies with little to no damage to character.
This controller looks cool... But the issue is that due to that S button it most likely isn't legal in tournament, which kind of kills the product as something marketed to super smash bros ultimate. As a competitor, I would buy this controller if that button was removed.
That thing is sick!! QQ what do you use for Wii U play. Im trying to find something better than the wii u pro controller knockoffs and the gamepad. Let me know!
So I trained short hops for a long time and now they give me a button 😒 Well I'd like 1 but with a different color. Should've made a darker purple or in my case a red.
Most ppl that take smash seriously toggle jump to a trigger making this controller irrelevant. Plus the macro button wouldn’t be allowed in tournaments and wouldn’t really be fair going up against your friends. If you want to short hop just learn how don’t buy a controller for it
I've always wondered how bad or good the GameCube ABX and Y layout is like if you had a regular controller in every other way and then the GameCube face buttons would that be bad or would that be better? My little pixel recently showed a PlayStation controller shaped but with the GameCube ABX and Y along with octagonal joysticks so I guess that's the best way to test it?
I kept looking at the controller and it kept bothering me. I had to prevent myself from commenting until 8 minutes into the video to see why the button layout was the way that it is but I just don't like it even for smash.
I wonder if this would be picked up or allowed in pro scenes, or if only licensed controllers will be preferred by players and those running the pro scene.
Not with that S button; anything with Macros would likely be banned pretty quickly (even if there are already existing ways to make that stuff easier in-game).

This controller was clearly meant for casual smash or local fun with friends. All of y’all that’s hating on this controller are missing out for sure. I have one and the control functions are solid !
How is it 7 months later?
Bluetooth support could have been added to the Switch with a basic update but they left it out for 4 years! At least we have it now
Yeah, Nintendo was even considering doing it at first, but decided not to.
For people with big hands (or long fingers like me) it was great 👍🏾
That already exists look it up. Unless you meant for Switch specifically.
How do the buttons and build quality feel? Does it feel cheaper than the official Pro Controller?
that's what I asked but I also have not been answered
@@snichelsticks8653 @MerryBlind It is incredibly high quality. Checkout my teardown to see for yourselves. I don't like this controller because of the button layout, but it's quality is absolutely high.
Jack Septiceyes new channel is great
switch pro controller is perfect except for the sticks. if you add the omnidirectional sticks from the gamecube controller (and optional paddles) it would be the perfect controller
I ended up buying a pro controller shell for notches.
Using the a and jump buttons at the same time is probably going to be rough
I just wish it was also able to work with a gamecube and wii with a different cable like the smash box.
A big improvement would have been making the c stick a proper same sized stick as the left one.
There's literally zero point in making the c stick smaller on any level.
Ackshuly, the c stick is smaller so your finger doesn't touch it while pressing the b button
@@blackghostcat that didn't happen on the orginal. You could mod it and put a second stick like the left one. And it never got in the way. Not for me anyway.
@@user-ky9ou5dz9q idk about that
The official one exists,
but this is pretty dope ngl
Why doesn’t this dude have more subscribers. His content is superb!
I think it should be views.
@@therealmariofan good point.
Very interesting, I'll give it a try next time I smash my gamecube controller
Nintendo already solved the short hop issue by making x+y a short hop shortcut
Finally got it used on smash ultimate no problems later I’m going to try this on other games but for shooting games I’d use my other controller why turbo button so you blast the enemies with little to no damage to character.
Deff gonna try this
This controller looks cool... But the issue is that due to that S button it most likely isn't legal in tournament, which kind of kills the product as something marketed to super smash bros ultimate. As a competitor, I would buy this controller if that button was removed.
Do the joysticks click in like a button ?? I only ask because my current game cube controls dose not
$30 is outstanding considering 1st Party wireless sell for $60
We need more controllers for fightinggames... because its flashy and cool right?
That thing is sick!! QQ what do you use for Wii U play. Im trying to find something better than the wii u pro controller knockoffs and the gamepad. Let me know!
So I trained short hops for a long time and now they give me a button 😒
Well I'd like 1 but with a different color.
Should've made a darker purple or in my case a red.
Most ppl that take smash seriously toggle jump to a trigger making this controller irrelevant. Plus the macro button wouldn’t be allowed in tournaments and wouldn’t really be fair going up against your friends. If you want to short hop just learn how don’t buy a controller for it
It’s only $30 let people buy what they want
@@mario7832 idc what ppl buy I'm just giving my opinion 😂
What I really want is a new GameCube style controller that I can use on an actual GameCube or Wii!
I mean there is the one that came out along with Ultimate that you can use on the Wii, Wii U and GameCube as well
RetroFighters has one on preorder that's essentially a new wavebird, but it has inline sticks instead of offset for whatever reason.
That’s cool love ya dude
I'm on the fence about getting it since it's most likely not tournament legal
This controller is amazing for cup head too
I feel like the controller would work for king of fighters also
this was pretty interesting, but I'll stick with my PowerA gc-style controllers
The monitor behind you has smash symbol reflected onto it
How to now if it's a good controller
Damn those analog sticks would be very helpful for playing Tekken or Virtua Fighter
Using the analog sticks in traditional fighting games is pretty dumb lol, it only works for Smash
I wish that controller also comes in black.
They just announced a new GameCube style controller.
Who, Nintendo?
Dang just 1 button short of being a good N64 replacement for emulators
This same company makes great N64 controllers with a traditional layout.
@@Anna_Rae had no idea thanks for the tip
I only have one doubt, how good is the D-pad and it's this controller comfortable for other fighting games on Switch.
In designing the controller they probably made the d pad just good enough for smash taunts.
Game cube games should be on the switch I love me some sonic adventures
I would genuinly purchase this oml
Highly discourage that. If you want GameCube, this falls short.
Please do a head reveal at 1M
I kept looking at the controller and it kept bothering me. I had to prevent myself from commenting until 8 minutes into the video to see why the button layout was the way that it is but I just don't like it even for smash.
Yeah, it's bad for Smash. I can see it being useful for other games, but not Smash.
I can't find anywhere else information regarding rumble and motion controls. Can you confirm?
I wonder if this would be picked up or allowed in pro scenes, or if only licensed controllers will be preferred by players and those running the pro scene.
Not with that S button; anything with Macros would likely be banned pretty quickly (even if there are already existing ways to make that stuff easier in-game).
How are you able to make captions for every video?
Yes
