Amen to that, I am a military vet, that was one of the best performances of military I have ever seen, usually Hollywood dolls it all up and botches it, He made the movie I think.
I watched nearly the entire movie being filmed in Port Townsend, Washington in the summer of 1980 working on an article for the LA Times. Lou Gossett talked to anyone and everyone, and even played on the local softball team. He is a great human being.
I was an extra in the movie. I was able to meet this fine gentleman. He was the nicest, most humble guy you could ever meet. What a true American treasure!
One of my favorite movies all time. I'm from Arkansas and in 2005, I went on a west coast motorcycle ride for a month and stopped in Port Townsend to see some of the places where the movie was filmed. Rest in peace Lou!
I grew up there . I auditioned for a small part , Deborah Winger's younger sister . They called me to tell me that they were impressed by my reading but that unfortunately I read a little too old for the part . They said , "Know that , had you been just a bit younger , we would have loved you for the part..." . Some crazy Hollywood celeb stories that occurred ... But I won't divulge ... just , damn .
I thought it was one of the most realistic depictions of training I've ever seen. They looked like naval officers and drill instructors. Very realistic. Deborah Wenger was never more beautiful. Richard Gere was never more handsome. What a combination!
I loved this movie. ..I'm 63. YEARS OLD NOW ☺️🌹🙏 I LET MY SON WATCH IT. NOW ! OF COURSE HE'S JUST GETTING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL I LIKE TO SEE HIM DO SOMETHING REALLY GREAT IN HIS LIFE JUST FOR HIM TO UNDERSTAND. HE HAS THE RIGHT. TO. MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION .BUT NOT BAD DECISION..!!! 🏆THIS IS MOVIE HAD HONORABLE CONSTRUCTIVE LEADERSHIP MENTORSHIP UNITY, YES WORKING TOGETHER HELPING ONE ANOTHER TO MAINTAIN A PRODUCTIVE LIFE WITH INTEGRITY AND SAFETY FOR THE COUNTRY KEEPING IT SAFE..IS PRIORITY.. ( A GOOD TEACHER NEVER TEACH YOU EVERYTHING..). WE WIN WE WON TOGETHER. OR WE MAY ALL FALL..❤️
I lived in Port Townsend in 1989, beautiful town and beautiful area. I spent a lot of time exploring around Fort Warden State Park. I remember how artsy and funky downtown was at the time.
Blues'n with the Bird We lived in the beautiful San Juan islands area ( Anacortes ) for 3 years. Taking the ferry with our dog to the other islands and great locations ( swimming in Fort Worden ) was a great weekend treat. Always feel sentimental about this movie.
I served on the Coast Guard Cutter Pt. Bennett in Port Townsend in 1980. It's everything they described and more, especially with all the search & rescue missions I remember. But there was time to explore, and all those places bring back memories to me.
During filming, some dear friends of mine invited the cast and support crew to a dinner at their old victorian house in PT (I was not there! drat!). Except for the major stars...my friends said that many showed up and honored them with their presence....you don't forget that.
It's a great film and it would have been a lot worse without Lois Gossett, as he played the best role in the fiilm. Also Port Townsend sounds like where I live in England, in the far north west, rains a lot, faded 19th century town centre, one big empoyer.
I was raised 1000 feet from the back gate to Fort Warden, it's actually a old soldier cemetery. Dont forget to check out memories vault in the upper bunkers, oddly it looks like a alter...
While watching this I couldn't help to think of that other movie with that real mean drill sergeant from ' Full Metal Jacket " ; Gossett's character played a more respectful one in my books.
Port Townsend is my hometown, and I recently returned to live after being gone for years. It’s so cool to see the “now & then” dichotomy. Unfortunately the town has changed drastically since 1982 & is prohibitively expensive for everyone except retirees or white collar professionals. It’s still a beautiful place, tho. RIP to the old PT shown in the film.
Fish, clam and more Visit the great site of that great movie often The grass fields where you filmed 100 of deer daily We share with them apples Thanks for the share as well.🤗
What's so eerie is that in An Officer & A Gentleman, Sgt. Foley warns the guys about The Girls who get pregnant to grab a Man, and in Roots he tries to tell Toby over and over that they can't run away and be free as much as they want to be.
RIP, Lou---you were amazing, what a job you did with that role.

Louis Gossett Jr is such a national treasure. What an amazing talent. He played an Officer... remains a gentleman. The world needs more men like him.
Rebekah Worsham and more women like you, you're hooooot
Lol...Not sure what I did to earn that, but it's most appreciated!
A NON - commissioned officer. Yes. Taking responsibilities as if he’s a true commissioned officer.
@@BmorePatriot Hooray for those NCO's !
@@rscott2247 They did their leadership firsthand.
Louis Gossett Jr is the epitome of a true gentleman that exudes class without being pretentious about it like so many other stars.
Excellent documentary. I love behind the scenes...
One of the greatest actors 🎉

Rest is peace Lou gossett Jr ,you were a great actor and human being too
RIP LOUIS GOSSETT JR
One older film I really like, so good! Perryman hasn't aged at all.

Good lord this is so nice to see , Best movie with real feel and character ever produced .

Gossett was not an Officer in this movie. He was a Sargent. That’s why he salutes the officer graduates in the end.

This was nice to see! People come n go, but some things just stay the same.
I live in Seattle and Port Townsend has changed quite a bit. The motel changed immensely. That’s for sure.
What a Great story! and a well deserved Oscar!
Lovely little documentary
A wonderful town to grow up in...it was a great time while they were filming here❤️
That must have awesome to watch
Thanks for sharing...LOVE the movie and really enjoy seeing locations as they stand now....if I wasn't 3000 miles away, I would visit it myself. LOL

I remember well. In the movie the location was called Port Rainer!!!.
love visiting the old ww2 bunkers and air fields.
We are in Port Townsend now. Love this town !
Me too live in Port Townsend
"Ahhhhhh...... only two things come out of Oklahoma "
He was tough in that character and he may be old but the character is still there!
I just watched this in 2021 damn this was just great..
I was raised 1000 feet from the back gate to Fort Warden, it's actually a old soldier cemetery. Dont forget to check out memories vault in the upper bunkers, oddly it looks like a alter...
My great uncle is buried in that cemetery. Two of my Great Uncles served there.
Goodbye Louis 1936 - 2024
I would guess the room where gere & winger is the 2nd requested room at the tides! Lou gossett Is a cool 😎 dude !
That was a cool video... thx for the upload...😊
While watching this I couldn't help to think of that other movie with that real mean drill sergeant from ' Full Metal Jacket " ; Gossett's character played a more respectful one in my books.
Love to visit there .. So cool what a great movie 😎
What a great video of one of my favorite early 80's movies
WE ALL LOVED HIM IN THE MOVIE SOOOOO COOL HE CAME BACK

Que buenos recuerdos 🙂pero ala vez triste , Nostalgia 🥴 por una época!
Aw man, this was fantastic.
This movie would have been so much worse had it been shot in a studio lot.
A fantastic mini-documentary, or whatever it's called.
Remembering Quattlebum. 1987-1988.
Thank you Louis............I love you !

10:51 11:48 Love Louis Gossett Jr. Guy is fantastic.
The Officer and Gentleman suite. lol
They took a pic of of me and a buddy standing in front of the boiler room, as potential content. Doesn't look like we made it into the final cut.
I’ve stayed in the room that they showed here, at the tides inn.
that room was my office then and the bathroom where David Keith hung himself was in that office suite.
Cool how about the room where gere & winger stayed in ? I like to check out both rooms
Soo cool.... I love louis..
This is cool. I dig the movie 🎥🍿
Lovely!

Reminds me a bit of Presidio of San Francisco...
fort warden was ex military also was a youth detention facility. i think
Yes, it was in the 60's for sure.
Very cool
So much love
That David Keith is very similar to Patrick Swayze.
Buongiorno, qual'é la via dell'abitazione di Paula nel film? Grazie
Anyone know why most RUclips videos that have to do with 'An Officer And A Gentleman' have the letters 'Grym' after the title?
i mean, he pulled off being a pregnant alien in Enemy Mine. 'Nuff said.
@ ReflexPoint JERIBA SHEGAN! WILLIS E DAVIDGE !
Was that Kathie Meyer I saw scurrying out of the shot?
PODÍA ALGUIEN SUBTITULAR LOS COMENTARIOS AL CASTELLANO, NO?????
