I’ve literally seen this movie at least 100 times! It inspired me greatly. I first saw it when it came out while i was in high school. I graduated and became a Marine. Although i wasn’t an officer but having that respect and character has remained with me my whole life. Mayo had to learn what it took to be a member of a team, to think of and care about others than himself. He finally learned it. Rest in Peace Lou Gossett Jr. ( Gunny Foley)!
I remember not wanting to see this movie when it came out. My girlfriend dragged me to it. I think it's one of the greatest movies ever made! Lou Gossett was perfect as Foley! Love this movie!
I cant say how much I appreciate this look back at this classic. I really loved this film and now getting an understanding of what it took to make it, I appreciate it even more! Thanks much!!
@@acerothstein4755 It certainly was the acting as well. If you hear the music you immediately have the acting in front of your eyes. Part of the magic of this movie. Inseparable.
I still love this movie, I've lost count how many times I've watched it! All the actors just fit, they were great, even if they didn't all get along, you would've never known by watching the film. A true classic, there are other good movies out there but I don't think they compare to this one.
Every single time I watch this movie it is like the first time. It makes me cry, laugh, cheer and mad! It is hands down my favorite move of all time! I have it on VHS and DVD and without a doubt I watch this movie at least 2 times a year just cuz it is sooooo dam good!
There were some powerful scenes in this movie. Love this movie. Glad they kept the ending scene. Sometimes I watch just the end scene on RUclips. That scene and the “I have no where else to go” scene…such a powerful scene.
Inspirational. The Navy version of Rocky. It made me think of a girl I dated whom looked similar to Debra’s character. The woman I knew might have passed though I hope I get a glance of her when I join her in heaven or on the other side.
I cried then and every time after I watch this great movie, I cried. This was one and he had many, of the best movies he’s ever made.❤️😀💯🔥. Lou all the crew was amazing. I still get emotional. All the women imagining it was us that Eichard was coming for❤️😃💯🔥
Richard Gear could win my heart in anything he chooses to do! Debra winger...I love that in urban cowboy and officer and a gentleman..she is a hometown beauty that plays up for every girl...not some Hollywood beauty trying to play down to fit the part! We need more movies like these...though I don't think they are necessarily planned...they evolve!
A brilliant film, I've watched it umpteen times & still thoroughly enjoy it. Brilliant actors, especially the performance by Louis Grosset Jr. as Sgt. Foley, who deservedly won an Oscar. A brilliant script written by Douglas Day-Stewart, and brilliant direction by Taylor Hackford.
Everybody in that film just KILLED IT-!!!!!!! This one, you have to give credit to 'Hollyweird'-!!! One of my FAVS... I (really) believe I once talked to Richard Gere in an Applebee's but he wouldn't admit that it was him... I THINK he was coming from Screengems in Wilmington, NC...?? And, when I passed by him, I looked him right in the face and said: 'Don't you be eyeballing me, Mayonnaise'-!!! (He started laffing)... 'Believe it, Or- not'-!!!?? 😆🤣👍✌
This film was shoot partly in the philippines. It was the time when cheap movies with little known actors then was film in the philippines who went on to become famous actors, like burt reynolds and chuck norris to name a few
This movie inspired many military careers in 1981, 1982... In my case, I became Yacht Skipper and obtained many Merchant Marine diplomas due to this film.
This movie made me want to be a better man. I went on to become a pilot (civilian). I became a better man. It's still so relevant, a time less masterpiece!
This and Shawshank Redemption are my my two top favorite movies. I think Richard Gear was very complementary of Debra Winger. Given, how they felt about each other. But, you gotta remember just how young and cocky they we’re back then.
I watched.this movie in my 20s. Still watch it today 25 years later...tear jerker! Dude why didnt Debra Winger and Lisa Blount give their views on this??? WTF??? Damn Richard got down with Debra for real..wow!! I told my wife "Damn that looked too real" I guess now we know why..lol
I was born in 1988 and the one scene where he says, he won't quit because "he's got no where else to go" that scene has had a profound affect on my life. I can relate a lot to the main character and his struggle and how he gives everything he has everyday because he ain't got nothing else. I've never watched the movie but I've watched that scene a hundred times when things have been at there worst
I watched that final scene being filmed at a paper bag plant in Tacoma, Washington. Still have a paper bag signed by the cast members produced during the filming.
OMG, this is a movie! One of the best of all time! Funny, that the are talking about shooting the end scene. Thank god, they did. What a great ending that makes even the toughest men cry!
I always thought that in the beginning of the movie taking place in the Philippines where Zack is that young kid and he's all upset telling his sailor dad " you said you were going to come back " I felt that that emotionally charged scene was so real " Great realistic acting, directing with that scene. Kudos to that kid actor that played there ~
This was a pivotal movie in not just my life… but my little brother! We saw this movie for the first time on beta! I have since grabbed it on dvd of course… but after that I grabbed it on laserdisc! My absolute favorite format to watch it on !!!!
This film marked my life in so many different ways. Now I know that I haven't hung myself because of the dramatic scene in it. I've being two seconds away from doing it and this scene just comes back to me.
I was in grade school when this movie came out, and I remember I wanted to watch it, and my cousin whom happened to be in high school took me to watch it and we both fell in-love with it.
After watching that movie I decided I was to make a naval officer and a pilot, which I did, not at the same time unfortunately. I couldn't help feeling a bit like Zack Mayo, walking around in my whites and that was great and what was even greater, several girls 'felt' that too.
Had this movie been made today, I think it might have won best film. Richard Gere, has never won an Oscar. He has been nominated but never pulled it off. Now he is 74 I doubt that he ever will. He like Harrison Ford who was robbed of one for Witness , Gere missed out for Officer and a Gentleman. The Academy is too arbitrary by far.
Trivia Fact: According to a guy I worked with at the paper mill in Port Townsend, the scene inside the bag plant was not actually in Port Townsend. Apparently, the PT mill had some issue with the script and didn't want to be associated with the film. Instead it was filmed at another mill close by.
I was 17 when I first watched this movie and I'm 59 now. I must have watch this movie 100 times. Gunnery Sergeant Foley Lou Gosset Jr. best performance ever, I don't think even Jack Nicholson can do any better.
I was barely 18, living off $3.05 an hour, and I went to see this movie 12 times at full price. It was Richard Gere’s character line that got me. Having nothing, but your own inner strength, and having to discover and overcome your own flaws. So awesome. Some 15 years later I was proposed to by a USN aviator, but declined. It wasn’t about Winger’s character being rescued. My pilot was an officer but not a gentleman.
R.I.P. Lou Gosset jr. March 29, 2024. Amazing, memorable performance.
@jameskidd411 ...Louis Cameron Gossett, Jr. died on March 29th, 2024.
Oh God,, I didn't know. Sad to hear. R.I.P
Dearly missed... yes, they said your name, Sir. Well deserved!
Best performance out of many fine efforts in that film.
Bravo!!
I loved this movie when it first came out, I am now 71yrs old and get as much out of it now as I did then.
Loved them all ❤

He definitely deserved the Oscar he received for this role.
I know why you didn’t want to watch it, because Gere is freaking gorgeous, awesome hunk! Every guy, my hubby, included, is jealous of him!
same
They nailed it on this one, it had stuff for the guys and stuff for the gals. Part coming of age man's movie and part rom com. Great flick.
That fight man, when Gere kicked Gossett in the heart I was like yeah boy!!!
I cant say how much I appreciate this look back at this classic. I really loved this film and now getting an understanding of what it took to make it, I appreciate it even more! Thanks much!!
My favorite movie of all time! I’ve seen it at least twice a year since it first came out. It still makes me cry in the end. ❤
Me too! 2:21
Still to this day one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.
So true. Underrated.
Ditto! 2:39
I graduated army basic training in 1984 great movie .
This movie was sooo good...I'm 50...This was one of my all-time faves!
Lou Gosset' s performance was impeccable!
He made it!
RIP Gunnery Sergeant Foley!!
Love this movie. Everyone was great in it. You can tell they all gave there all to it, acting wise. Richard Gere.......WOW!
Let’s not forget the soundtrack…..great score in this movie.
The music made it, not the acting
Absolutely. Still have it on vinyl❤😊
@@acerothstein4755 It certainly was the acting as well. If you hear the music you immediately have the acting in front of your eyes. Part of the magic of this movie. Inseparable.

One of the best actors: Louis Gosset Jr....RIP 2024...87 years...always be remembered!!...Maybe an underrated film ..possitive and has a message!

My favorite movies of all time!! Love the Story line in it!! All did a superb performance!! My only problem was the Language!!
@@billieterry7111 Oh darn, I take it you don’t speak/read English? What about subtitles?
Me too...absolutely one of my favorite movies ever. Every actor was tailor made for each part.
"Walk that wall!" An awesome scene about challenge, achievement, teamwork, love.
Don't forget Robert Loggia.
There were some powerful scenes in this movie. Love this movie. Glad they kept the ending scene. Sometimes I watch just the end scene on RUclips. That scene and the “I have no where else to go” scene…such a powerful scene.

My favorite is the fight between Mayo and Foley, where Foley says "you can quit now if you want Mayo it's up to you" . Very powerful scene.
Great movie!!! Seen it too many times to count! :)
I gave up counting the times, I’ve watched it.
Lou Gosset Jr. won the best supporting oscar for this in 1982. Well deserved win. RIP.
Here in 2021, it still stands the test of time. I tear up on the last scene every time!! A great movie.
This movie is still one of the greatest of all time; it has the magic to transport you and make you feel like part of the cast.
It's one of those movies you can watch over and over and never get tired of. ❤
My favourite film of all time. Has to be a complete hit!
Officer and the Gentleman is my favorite movie, I watch it over and over and I will always love Richard Gere, Always
Nice
Inspirational. The Navy version of Rocky. It made me think of a girl I dated whom looked similar to Debra’s character. The woman I knew might have passed though I hope I get a glance of her when I join her in heaven or on the other side.
One of my greatest movies then and now.
This was the last movie I saw at the theatre with my high school GF before I went to boot camp for the navy, It will always be special to me.

Lou Gossett worked his az off just to get the part. Without question he deserved Best Supporting Actor.
this movie need a national film registry nod
Great movie!! All of the acting was A+ I loved the beautiful Lisa Blount in any movie she was in. I hated when she died in 2010. So young.
Everyone was perfect for their role in this script! This movie is unforgettable! Just put Richard Gere in the cast, & I am hooked!
He always gets the girl

Tony Plana I've seen him in a lot of boxing and prison movies until now I didn't realize he was in this film as Della Serra.
