Dayyyumm skippy!! If ever a winner for "Best Supporting Actor" gave a better performance than Louis Gossett, Jr. did in that movie, one would be VERY hard-pressed to find another performance in ANY other movie that matches it. I was sooooooo happy to know that Louis won it, not only because the role was SUPERBLY done and he richly deserved it, but because Louis is a great guy, as well. (Note: I normally don't overly gush over a performance and/or individual, but Gossett's performance was the DI was/is rarified air in the history of acting, IMO.)

No disrespect to the other nominees, but that was a no-brainer. He was absolutely perfect for that role and just killed it. Unforgettable performance!

I totally agree. His performance is still so memorable 40 years later. He seems like a pretty awesome guy.
David Keith said they became friends eventually when making the movie and Gossett said while he was thrilled to get the Oscar his costar Richard Gere should have been nominated and won and he was disappointed neither happens. Truly a gentleman. He cares more about others than himself and he brought that same element to Foley in the film. That’s why his performance is so special.

Crazy that he died on my birthday. I love his performance in this movie, and other work that he did in his career - a few months ago I watched him in an episode of “Picket Fences” during a first time watch of the series - he was outstanding. Rest in peace, Mr. Gossett. “Walk around, Seeger!!!”
