Saw Robin at the Comedy Store in LA once around 1980. When someone makes you laugh so hard that tears roll down your face and you can't breathe you never forget. Saw him again 1991 at a book store in my home town. At the time he was filming the movie Toys. Speaking with him was such a interesting and enjoyable conversation. He was a humble, kind and friendly person.

Many people don't know this, but Robin Williams took a major pay cut to do this role. He thought it was that important and valuable to do. I always liked Robin Williams much more as an actor than as a comedian. I thought his true talents were in acting. His style of comedy was far too manic for my taste. Sure, he was talented, but that kind of comedy never appealed to me much. But that says more about me than him. Obviously, many people loved his comedy.

The beautiful irony of Robin williams is he was both one of the greatest iconic comedians and he was also one of the greatest dramatic actors of all time. His versatlity was extraordinary, and his ability to literally become the role he was playing was done effortlessly and he was able to tap into the emotional energy of each role he played. His off the cuff creativity enabled him to perform roles without simply reciting lines on a script, but he performed each role from the depths of his soul. 'The smartest thing any producer or director could do was briefly paint the overview of the scen and then get the hell out of the way and let Robin Williams paint a masterpiece on the canvass of cinema. Finally, why do I get the feeling Robin Williams would have acted and create comedy even if he made only minimum wage, he did it for the love the art, it was literally who he was, and perhaps aspects of his depression was he was able to ecape the realities of this cruel world in the performance of his craft and he also took all of us fans with him on his epic odyssey.

As a late 80’s millennial, Robin Williams and Fred Rogers were my earliest examples of who I want to be, and what I want to put forth into the world.
I fall SO, so short of that, in more instances than not, but I can hear their words (both scripted and otherwise) in the back of my mind. Reminding me, always, that I, too, am only human.

Maybe not the best film he ever did, but the one i always remember.

While I truly love Robin in this film, Burt Reynolds had won almost all the other awards up to this point. I feel he deserved it that year, as the role's character was much more of a stretch. You could see how disappointed he was. It's sad he never got his Oscar. But also hard not to embrace Robin's happiness too.

the man wasn’t only a dream to audiences, directors, fellow actors, inspired young filmmakers and people all over the world… he also delivered an acceptance speech that was short and tight and probably made the producers of the Oscars very happy because he came in under time… he was swift, charming, and loveable in maybe the fewest words ever said on that stage. What an immeasurable legend!

He loved his family dearly, was a kind and devoted friend and did so much for the world, even aside for the wonderful entertainment he provided. He helped the homeless, was a huge advocate for LGBT rights and really, equal rights for all. How I miss such a beautiful person.
