I love how his best, realest, and closest friends - the ones he planned to grow old living down the street from - are all genuinely happy that he took his ticket and got the fuck out of there. They all wanted so much more and better for him; they didn’t wanna hold him back/down there in South Boston with them and their mediocre (but still honorable) lives. They wanted him to have all the kinds of better that a human being can have in his/her life; and to transcend all of that place, as he was more than able to do with the level of mega-genius that he had. They loved him unconditionally; and through that love, they wanted him to leave them behind and spread his *huge* wings and just go fuckin flying all over this simple little world already. It takes a next-level degree of best-friend love to want your buddy to leave you behind and do what he was born to do, instead of stickin it out through life with you.
Exactly you get it. chucky is the truly his best friend. he wanted him to give up on him so he wont hold him back he wanted the best for him even if that means leaving him and his friends.

ArbiterDan the thing is, there are quite literally people out there with that same kind of potential. You may harbor your doubts, but this movie is not as unrealistic as you may believe.
It's actually not bullshit. There are people (they are incredibly rare) who have insights that even leaders in their respective fields can't see. This entire story was essentially inspired by Ramanujan & Hardy -- Hardy being one of the greatest mathematicians of the early 20th century and, by Hardy's own account, Ramanujan far surpassed him.
3:14 I like to think that Will actually did precisely that. Becoming a therapist, helping people, wounded children like him and Sean. Giving them the strength to overcome their trauma and allow themselves to grow.
This movie truly shows the beauty of friendship. Though it must've hurt Chuckie that Will left without saying anything (which he always wished for) but he is ultimately happy because he can think that Will would be somewhere he truly belongs rather than ending his life in a place that didn't give him the space to shine. Absolutely one of my favourite movies. And the fact that Damon and Affleck are best friends makes me feel that such a bond can truly exist.
If you think that, you must have watched a different movie than I did. That's EXACTLY what he wanted for him. If a best friend took my honest heartfelt advice, I would be eternally grateful and happy for him.
I just love how Ben's expression completely tells about his feelings. Like he is sad that his friend left but the satisfaction that his friend listen to him and went on for good.
You know when the "Girl" is right to change your life. It's an amazing feeling and 30 years later still going strong. How many times I think what if I did not make the move, every day.
My son, who was born in 2002, watched this movie with me and told me it was the best movie he has ever seen. This movie was made 5 years before he was born but resounds with his generation like no other film I know.
The one thing that I always loved about Robin Williams is his ability to do solid drama. While I did enjoy his comedy films, I felt he was always great doing drama. Good Will Hunting, The Fisher King, Dead Poets Society, are just a few of his best films. The best part? I will always remember him for his role from Mork & Mindy, whom I grew up watching during the 70's and 80's. He's just one of those rare actors that comes along who can make you laugh, make you cry, make you stand up and look at yourself in the mirror. he is, forevermore, a consummate actor.
Remember guys, your real friends are the ones that want to see you be better than you are everyday. If they’re not making you be better, or believing in your potential to do so, they aren’t your friends. This scene is amazing.
I don't see what's so "bittersweet" about this ending. If anything, it's just sweet because Matt Damon's character Will Hunting finally realizes what he wants out of life and decides to take action by going after it.
You can see the bittersweet in Ben Affleck's scene with the various facial expressions he shows as the realization hits him. He realizes that Will left, and while he is happy about it, he's sad that his best friend won't be there with him every day. That that part of their life together is over forever. And he's suppressing that bittersweet emotion with that awkward smile as he walks back to the car and tells the rest of them that Will is gone.
Because he left the closest people in his life up to that point and the place he was born and raised. New beginnings, though necessary, are always bittersweet.
That Smile at 2:04 said a lot. The part where Chuckie realizes Will has left is always my favorite part. He is sad and happy all in one then you got the awesome Robin Williams line at the end.
Robin Williams was great indeed, but I never thought Ben Affleck was right for this role. He was too pretty and tried too hard to make up for it. Even his smirk in this scene was as overdone as his street Bostonian. He looked too much like Elvis here which ruined it for me.
I agree, Robin is brilliant in this movie, Matt, Ben and Minnie are also excellent as well. Even Casey was really good even though it would be another 10 years or so before he got more widespread recognition, becoming an Oscar winner himself for Manchester By The Sea (2016).
I love how Chuckie took his time processing Will’s absence. He’s at first excited that “the best part of his day” is realized, then he’s sad that his friend’s gone, then back to feeling happy for him, then wondering if he’ll ever talk to him again, and then back to “of course he will” with the smile. Glad the camera stayed with him throughout all of that.
I loved this movie's message too. It basically tells you that true happiness doesn't always mean having some high-end job, but pursuing what you're truly passionate about.

I'm sorry Hollywood did a number on Ben...I hope he finds his peace soon.

Chasing a woman and leaving college was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Don't let this movie romanticize not following your commitments through. Don't use this movie to justify coping out on your future for a fleeting of pleasure...
I want to build this channel off of positive vibes and love, and maybe I’m just in a bad place right now, but don’t throw your own dreams away for a maybe. Sure, he was technically the instigator of the break up, but that means that the girl has every right to have moved on in her life away from him. It bothers me that people mess around with people like that, but at least he is attempting to set things how he feels they should be and is finding closure. Tl;dr I sometimes wish I could not have feelings and be a killer sci fi film cyborg who seduces her prey but even I know that’s messing with people’s emotions and that shit ain’t fun kids.
Huss That's what I did, I did throw what I had at that time away for a maybe. Didn't work for me, and honestly probably isn't realistic for most people. And I'm a firm believer in to each their own but it's people romanticizing this option that bothers me. I just don't want to see people ending up hurt over what they thought was right. Sometimes the best intentions leave us with the worst consequences. No all the time, and I know I'm contradicting myself here but you can't and shouldn't try to protect yourself to a point of not experiencing what could be.
Huss I am pretty much a boring aloof toast. And let me tell you, being distant and apathetic is a great way to chase everyone away slowly, so slowly you don't even realize their gone. It's a slow kind of death, and a great never ending cycle of distancing as a coping mechanism only for you to never be able to come back, and only ever pushing yourself further away from the people that all you want to do is love and care for.
Yeah, I won't lie it's getting more tempting just to distance myself more and more from everyone and avoid getting attached after being hurt, but the reality is I know that I still have people I care for and want the best for. I guess what's important is to remember that it's okay to be a bit cautious, but it's important to love and care for others too
Huss I must apologize for bringing my calloused world view to your channel. You seem very nice and I don't want to soil your channel with my angry rants about nothing. Only you know what's best for you.
I loved the movie the 1st time i saw it but when Elliott's song came up it made the movie 1000x better. I owe this movie everything because it introduced me to Elliott smith.
Deep down all men want to hop in a kicked down rusty car and drive 3000 miles to be together with the love of his life... But things is that many of us dont have that special someone
My ex prof always compared me to Will. Hiding under his talents, not letting himself/ourselves to love life. "I had to go see about a girl." - you made the right choice Will! Sadly, I did not realize it until I turned 31. Now it's time to start to live. I got all the success in my job... but all I desired the whole time is a woman that mercyful and warmhearted like Skylar
Chuckie is a once in a lifetime kind of friend. Side note; I know it’s a long shot, but does anyone know the name of the Irish tune that is playing when Chuck walks back to the car? I love it ☘️
only movie I've ever seen that has probably 5 scenes i can sob to. In a hopeful way. I will watch this movie probably another 100 times in my life and always remembered how it changed my life. Not only was it mind blowing on a entertainment level but it also opened my mind to psychology and has helped me come to an understanding a lot of my own psyche. Thankfully never been abused or in a foster home but I've never related to a character in a movie more. Should've ended with playing about a girl by nirvana tho.
And when he reached the college with his broken car everyone was laughing at him.. She saw some it from her class and recognized it was his.. She left the class came running and hugged him without caring about anything.. And he realized that she doesn't care that everyone is laughing at him but she only cared that he wad here for her.. And at that moment his insecurity about her went away.. They got married have two children (a boy and a girl).. Everyone attended the marriage.. Robin william is an author now.. And Matts frds work under him, ben works in the same city and other two different states.. Ben and matt family go on camping together every year. THE END
1:14 can anyone id that 5-point badge on the door? I feel like it's significant, as it's the last thing before the credits shot. I ran it through google images, looked at army insignia, and pulled up searches for crest, fort, symbol, etc. To me it looks like a golfer's in the middle of the circle.
That those two young men, Matt and Ben, wrote this amazing story.. how much was crafted in their HS lunches together in the other cafeteria idunno... AND then lassoed RWilliams into the perfect role.. it still amazes me.... to wrap a likable but difficult genius protagonist around the life of another complex lovable conflicted protagonist.. all w the E coast Boston Vibe and the man-yourself-up or take it to the alley... I just don't get how that talent could be so damn solid so young, but I'll F'king take it. Wicked awesome top ten fav films.
That's a classic bitch move right there. When the real guy won't bond to you that easily, lets take some random short time fluffer as an emotional tampon to ease the pain until the next real guy comes along.
0megacron yeah and he is not an intense genius that just drove across the country to see her so he just serves to show how much more devoted and worthy Will is of her obviously.
another stroke from this movie is most of us will live modest lives, and happiness is found in simpler things, and interactions with people. Treasure your health and friends while you have them.
Sometimes a movie connects with me to the point where I have to watch the end credits. My favorite is Jurassic Park. I love the ending with the helicopter riding off thru the sunset but then the titles start up. It's upbeat music until Sam Neills name appears and it goes to the main theme. The credits are telling me who exactly I was with for those 2 hours of glorious movie magic.

But things is that many of us dont have that special someone
so real. gonna do that with her
One of the most beautiful films I’ve seen.
Robin Williams is awesome. Why are the comments so recent?
Jaiden Schallhorn because youtube wasnt around in the 90s lol
hottyloxie well played
We are getting old
We all want to look back and see when Ben was a bad actor ...... Actually any movie works for that
Guess ever since he died.
My ex prof always compared me to Will. Hiding under his talents, not letting himself/ourselves to love life.
"I had to go see about a girl." - you made the right choice Will! Sadly, I did not realize it until I turned 31.
Now it's time to start to live.
I got all the success in my job... but all I desired the whole time is a woman that mercyful and warmhearted like Skylar
this is one of the greatest movies of all time.
Chuckie is a once in a lifetime kind of friend.
Side note; I know it’s a long shot, but does anyone know the name of the Irish tune that is playing when Chuck walks back to the car? I love it ☘️

Wow I haven't seen this movie yet but after watching a few short scenes I'm definitely going to watch it. Looks fantastic
This is great. He used Robin Williams scene from the bar and what he told his buddies when he skipped the World Series
Robin Williams just straight up acting instead of 'acting out' because of his inner turmoil. He looked at piece in that movie. RIP Robin
i love that ending! both the bit when Will isnt at the house.. then the bit when he reads the letter. Nice!
im glad the description reassures i was not the only one with the same unexpected reaction
3:09 🤣 his response is funny... RIP Robin Williams.
I love that Robin Williams ad-libbed that line.
Best ending ever. Gets me everytime
only movie I've ever seen that has probably 5 scenes i can sob to.
When you finally let fear go and begin to live...
THE END
Anand Kumar Robin committed suicide
and then they all died in a car crash
She didn't even know that was his car. He got it for his 21st birthday after she had already left.
Favorite movie ever. And this scene seals it. Been reading many comments saying the same. And to that I say “son a bitch. He stole my line.”
It was a perfect ending.
'Course, when he got to California and tracked down Skylar, she already had a new guy. We don't mention that part, though.
It's a movie bro. Murphy's law doesn't apply as much there.
Will would chump that dude like he did the other guy in the bar that night. How you like dem apples?
0megacron yeah
How do you like them Apples?
That's a classic bitch move right there. When the real guy won't bond to you that easily, lets take some random short time fluffer as an emotional tampon to ease the pain until the next real guy comes along.
0megacron yeah and he is not an intense genius that just drove across the country to see her so he just serves to show how much more devoted and worthy Will is of her obviously.
another stroke from this movie is most of us will live modest lives, and happiness is found in simpler things, and interactions with people. Treasure your health and friends while you have them.
Robin Williams…. One of the greatest actors of our time. Gone too soon and the generations to come after will be lesser for his absence.
Such a great ending I actually watched the ending credits at the end of this clip.
This is my generation's movie. Hope others can take from it as I have and enjoy ;-)
found this coupled with some forgettable movie- I didn't understand it at first, and only enjoyed it for the "wow Will's so smart I wanna be just like him", but now this movie has sooo much nostalgia value to it and I love it so much
Best end credits scroll ever....
a part 2would have been awesome. but sadly with Robin Williams gone from us it will never be 😢💔 RIP ROBIN WILLIAMS WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE & RESPECT YOUR GENIUS THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT WITH US 💔
The little bit of Irish music as chuckie walks back to car is so note perfect 😭😊
Will is a very well rounded person in the end because not only is he just natural a genius but he also has went threw the harsh reality of life his “book smart” and “street smart” most genius tend to just be “book smart”
