Kevin Kline's performance in A Fish Called Wanda is the sort I immediately think of whenever trying to come up with an example of wonderfully nuanced comedic acting. You need to be both a great actor and comedian to pull that performance off.

+RoseisoutofherTOGA the Academy does support comedy, always has, when they are actually funny and done well...It Happened One Night, Ninotchka, Harvey, Blazing Saddles, The Producers, Paper Moon, Bullets Over Broadway, Annie Hall, Mighty Aphrodite, Auntie Mame, The Philadelphia Story, Ghost, Cactus Flower, The Apartment, As Good As It Gets, Hanna and her Sisters, California Suite...all the above were nominated for several academy awards and in some cases won. Many of them were for acting and writing. They range from 1930's to now. There are several others but can't think rt now which. The Academy has always loved a good laugh and applauded comedic acting. Josephine Hull's win for Harvey, Mira Sorvino's win for Mighty Aphrodite, Diane Weist's 2 Oscars for Hanna and one for Bullets, Diane Keaton's win for Annie Hall, Claudette Colbert's win for It Happened one Night, as well as Clark Gables win for It Happened one Night, Whoopi's win for Ghost, Maggie Smiths win for California Suite, Michael Cane's win for Hanna well you get the picture 😉 Smile Always 😀

+Cisco C. Yeah, too bad it was the wrong one. Actually, lots of comedies and comic roles have been awarded Oscars. You probably just don't know about them. The reason I like this so much is not just because Wanda is a great movie and Kevin was great in it. It's because comedies aren't considered as highly by the Academy as dramas are, which is not just a shame, it's really unfair.
Great comedy is not easy to write at the best of times. When you consider how hard it is to write 5-10 mins of comedy, writing 100 minutes that works from start to finish _and_ includes drama, suspense and romance...that's a feat.
But somehow the Academy thinks that turgid, pompous drama is the pinnacle of the medium.
