- Louis Gossett Jr., who won an Emmy Award for "Roots," and became the first African American to win a best supporting actor Oscar for his performance in "An Officer and a Gentleman," died Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the age of 87. In this conversation with CBS News' Michelle Miller (originally broadcast on "Sunday Morning" July 19, 2020), Gossett talked about his long career, and said the greatest advice he could give wasn't about acting - it was about understanding.

As we age, we know people are going to pass over but still, it's a shock and sadness. Isn't it wonderful and a good witness of his family to know that so many people are saddened for his passing. God's peace to his family and friends.

I remember watching him in Roots as a young kid, playing the role of Fiddler.
So sad. I met him on the set of An Officer and a Gentleman. Was an extra for entire production. He was so kind and outgoing to us extras. Just a wonderful actor and person.

A legendary existence...my most memorable Louis Gossett viewing was when he made a Cameo appearance on the Jefferson's as George's best friend from the Navy and he was hitting on Louise behind George's back, yet right in his face but George had so much trust in him, he couldn't see it.
Louis' performance in that was masterful, he was crazy smooth 😂.
Rest In Peace Mr. Gossett, you lived your life to the fullest and took many of us along with you...may God be pleased with you, sir!
