  • Laura Kowal was looking for love online and ended up being conned out of $1.5 million before her mysterious death. A year-long CBS News investigation found that experts believe law enforcement isn't keeping pace with romance scammers like the ones who victimized Kowal. Correspondent Jim Axelrod reports the first of a four-part series, "Anything for Love," a look inside the nation's romance scam epidemic. [Don't miss Part 2 of the investigative series "Anything for Love" on the "CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell," Monday, April 22.]

It happened at a time in our marriage where we were struggling, and had been working on our relationship, but because of the stupidity on his part, they were able to blackmail him. Moral of the story? Online dating is too dangerous. I know this because I almost fell victim to that kind of thing. What started off as a friendly long distance chat quickly escalated into me being pressured to give up too much of my life savings for a total stranger. Thankfully, I found the courage to break it off before that could happen. I’ll never fall for that kind of thing again, and nobody should go through that kind of experience.

  • @CrystallyLavender

I just cannot wrap my head around how and why anyone would get scammed no matter how lonely they feel, and I say this as someone who’s being in a very dark and lonely place most of my adult life due to debilitating depression. Although it’s self-imposed loneliness from depression, I just cannot even fathom giving any man even a penny of my money. When I was 19, I did lend $600 to my boyfriend at the time that I’d been dating for almost two years, but I made sure that he paid me back and he did. But even then, I’d learned to never lend any money to any man I’m involved with romantically. It’s just hard to fathom anyone falling for people they’ve never met, much less losing all their money, and sometimes life, to these total strangers. Very sad and heartbreaking.
