His attractiveness was that he wasn't typically handsome. He was captivating. He gave us so many wonderful films to rewatch again and again. A stellar actor.
He was not an ugly man. I always found him to be handsome. I’ve seen nearly all of his films. He was an amazing actor. He will be sorely missed. RIP Mr Sutherland, you’ll never be forgotten.
I remember that episode of 60 minutes. I remembered that he thought of himself as being ugly. It made me sad back then and it makes me sad now because I found him to be extremely handsome.
I met Mr Sutherland at a magazine stand in Brentwood ca and a very down to earth conversation with him. He was a genuine as any person. Sad to see him go.
I began to realize about 30 years ago the actors and actresses we watched growing up in the 60s, 70s, 80s and thru today have passed on. Leaving an empty space in our hearts. Never occurred to me the loss happens with each generation. Being 65 and have seen the shows and movies with great performers and even the music we listened to, we are a special generation of folks. As we age we tend to reflect on the people and events that touched our lives. I cherish the days gone by even more these days knowing this nation is so much more divided.
Absolutely heartbreaking to hear him recount that conversation with his mother. He was a very attractive man. And he had a wonderful voice. One of the greatest actors of all time. RIP.
I was In Love with him for Years, but he Never knew, how could He? The Voice, The Professionalism, The Mystery. Very Unique that was Brilliance for sure. U r going to be missed Donald, Rest Well!
*_Today, we honor Donald Sutherland, a cinematic legend whose talent enriched our lives. Reflecting on his words,_* *_"It's the things we love the most that destroy us," we cherish his profound impact. Rest peacefully, dear Donald._* ❤
I just rewatched the movie DS starred in, in MASH. As an Operating Room RN, for 15 of my 30 years, as a nurse, it was a very emotional movie to watch. Also, my grandpa’s doctor served in Korea as well. I don’t believe we will ever know the caliber of actors that were in that movie, with the exception of Alan Alda. I will ALWAYS LOVE the movie and series MASH, especially as an OR Nurse. May you RIP Donald Sutherland and I wish your family peace and condolences during this time of loss.
It’s sad to hear he thought he was ugly, the pain he bore out of his mother’s comment. What a brilliant actor, intellectual and entertaining. And he was certainly not ugly. He will be missed. Rest In Peace.
I had the good fortune to see Donald Sutherland live on stage in a play in London. I don’t remember much about the play except that he was riveting in it. I’m glad he lived to a respectable age, long enough to finally get recognition from Hollywood. May his passing be incentive for many of us to go back and watch all his performances.
What I saw is his humility and humanity. He was so natural in his movie roles that you were immersed in his character like it was real. So when he cried watching his character in Don't Look Back I realized that he BECAME his character. Maybe thats why he had to walk away and never see one of his completed films, it was just too overwhelming and exhausting for him. He touched your heart because he played fron the heart in his movie characters. In the movie industry he was one of the greats.
I'm gonna have to watch Invasion of the Bodysnatchers and Don't Look Now this weekend in memory of him. Thanks for all the laughs and all the tears, Mr. Sutherland.
Nooooooooooo he wasn't 'ugly'. I wouldn't have always had a crush on him..........if he was 'ugly'. He was.........CUTE. Not your typical 'handsome' but definitely cute handsome. I teared up when read first report he has passed.
Rip King. What a distinct voice and wonderful career. He'll be so, so missed. I felt so much for him as his eyes moistened recalling his own mother thinking he was unattractive.
Years ago, I happened upon a miniseries titled, “The Oldest Living Confederate Widow,” and completely fell in love with Donald Sutherland. I thought then (and now) that he was one of the most handsome men I had ever seen. Years later, I married a man who bore a stunning resemblance to him, beautiful white beard and all.
He was so wonderful in Ordinary People. I wanted him to receive an Academy Award for his work in that movie. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for it, but I'm amazed that he wasn't nominated for an Oscar for his incredibly sensitive portrayal of the father in that movie. Thank you, Donald Sutherland, for such a beautiful performance. And your mother was way off: you were handsome.
Donald Sutherland. I absolutely loved this man. He is sweet and funny as hell and just a glorious beautiful soul. And it all shines through in his work. He was one of the all time greatest actors. A beautiful man. And human. Inside and out. I do not know how he could think of himself as ugly or even unattractive. He was beautiful through and through. And excessively gifted and talented. Talent and heart and beauty that he gifted to the world in his admirable life and work. I love every character he ever portrayed. There is not a single flaw in any of the portrayals of all the flawed human beings he endeavored to give us in his films. Though I love everyone of them, my all time favorite is Calvin Jarrett in Ordinary People. Both he and Mary Tyler Moore were perfect and profound in that film. Thank you, Donald Sutherland. Thank you from my heart. For all the joy you gave me and so many others in this world sharing your gifts of talent and beauty with us in your timeless work. "Rest in peace child of the universe. One of my favorite actors ever. Mesmerizing man. Utterly charismatic and I always thought he was attractive. So sorry he was made to feel he wasn’t. One of the greats forever.
*_The remark about his self-perception as unattractive deeply touched me. I'm not going to sit here and virtue signal by refuting his assessment or extol his physical appearance, rather I celebrate the beauty of his immense talent. An absolutely fantastic actor who could play any role, drama, comedy, horror. I have never seen him in a film I didn't like. The emotions he conveyed of grief and emotion he showed in films such as "Ordinary People", "Invasion of the body snatchers" and "Don't look now" were so convincing and conveyed such emotion. Not ugly good looking tall charismatic blue eyes and brilliant
His eyes turned moist when he called himself unattractive. But he wasn't unattractive or ugly. Boy, we all have trauma that stays with us.
That hit me hard
I got the impressionhis eyes moistened thinking of his mother
And when he is watch one of his movies he cry's because he sees a past character he played
