Meryl really is so talented and has that gift of putting herself into any role and speak any accent such as Sophie Polish to Lindy A Cry In The Dark ,Australian accent to Francess The Bridges Of Madison County Italian accent, her talent is phernominal
Meryl can do no wrong, but the academy must have had trouble choosing between the other stellar performances in the best actress category in 1983. What a year for women in film.

Don't think so. Her performance was the one everbody was talking. Stalone doesn't call MARVELOUS when reading the winner for no reason. Just to have an idea about the impact Meryl caused that time. The catagory that year was in its highest peak, but no one could beat her which shows the true power her portrayal has even nowadays.
@@michelrodrigues5686 Agreed. Meryl must have gotten at least 99% percent of the vote. With a performance this great, no one would even think of voting for the others.

Meryl, you are such a gifted woman... I could never forget the impact of that powerful performance and specifically scene of the chosen... you are great!
The way Jessica Lange smiles and looks down when he says her name just breaks my heart 💔 ... Meryl definitely deserved that award, but Jessica deserved it as well...
She did, but let's not forget she already had won a deserved Oscar at that same ceremony. As best supporting actress for "Tootsie". As a matter of fact all five actresses nominated here were absolutely superb in their respective roles. But Streep outclassed that exquisite group.
@@stepp2haus the problem was that Jessica had a leading role in tootsie not a supporting one. I think the academy messed it up just to give an Oscar to meryl
The academy loved Jessica's performance in "Frances" but, knowing who the real winner would be and that she stood a weak chance, they gave her the supporting award for "Tootsie" as consolation so they would both win. So technically Jessica won for "Tootsie", but she really won for "Frances"
Now, if the Academy would actually choose great performances that deserve the award, Meryl Streep would have six or seven Oscars by now, breaking the record. Robert De Niro would have three or four. Leonardo DiCaprio would have two. Glenn Close would have one or two. Jennifer Lawrence would still be waiting.
I agree with you so much exept for the Jennifer Lawrence, I think she does deserve what she won, but agree so so much with Meryl winning at least six. sigh!
Nick Peek I agree about Streep, DeNiro, and Close. I think Streep should also have won for "A Cry in the Dark", "The Bridges of Madison County", and "The Devil Wears Prada", giving her 6 by now.
Meryl deserved this win hands down. Sophie's Choice is my all time favorite Meryl Streep movie. I have to say, Jessica Lange in Frances was also amazing. If you haven't seen Frances, watch it. It's based on a true story & Jessica did a bang-up job in that role. And wow...all the nominees were stiff competition that year. Even Debra Winger was in the running! I miss those days so much. Actresses had a certain humbleness & class that seems SO lacking these days. They were so much more well mannered & lady-like than today. ❤
Oh how I wish Victor Victoria was released another year. Julie gives an phenomenal musical comedic performance totally deserving of the Oscar, but she didn't have a chance going up against such an incredible performance by Meryl. Had it been another year, the Oscar would have been Julie's.
She has such a beautiful voice, so was Julie Andrew. It was so unfair that they only give out 1 award per year while these ladies were all very great. Each and every one of them should be given an award.
+hithere327 You're probably right about actress. But I wouldn't say actor when you consider the work of the Brandos, the De Niros, the Pacinos, the Nicholsons the Duvalls, the Scotts, the Day-Lewises, etc.

I just finished reading Styron's novel for the second or third time and only wept at the end, absorbing the full scope of that literary masterpiece once more; it is a stunningly tragic saga. But I made it about 15 minutes into this film, with Meryl Streep's performance as Sophie, and I was sobbing uncontrollably. She gives incredible life to the character, and animates the most pathetic and heartbreaking little nuances of Sophie that I couldn't draw forth from my own imagination. What a performance. This movie was made before I was born, and it STILL has the capacity to reduce the observer to helpless mourning and grief. Meryl earned this award without question. What a beautiful story.

One of the TOP 3 BEST PERFORMANCES OF ALL TIME BY AN ACTOR OR ACTRESS. Meryl was robbed so many times at Oscars, she should have won at least 5 times already.
There are some rare performances by women through the years. Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice, Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose, and Elizabeth Taylor is Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf.
Okay, but Sly presenting the award for the leading actress is literally everything. He’s so stunning and such a gentleman. He was also very happy for Meryl that she won ❤
"Ample make this bed Make this bed with awe In it wait till judgment break Excellent and fair " I loved this poem because I loved sophie's character. Love you Meryl
By Emily Dickinson...the poem read by Stingo as an eulogy as they lay there in bed...lifeless...Sophie went to join her children butchered in Autchwitz....
I find it extremely distressing that this woman hasn't won more Oscars, she has no real competition. I mean look at " A Cry In The Dark" ,"The Devil Wears Prada", "The Hours", "Music Of The Heart", "Doubt" and she hasn't been awarded an Oscar for these? It depresses me. She is the greatest actress that ever lived and if she doesn't win one for "The Iron Lady " I'm done with Hollywood!
Meryl has represented so many wonderful characters and women. Despite the fact that were all amazing, I think in Sophie's choice, she did a legendary job. And personally, I think Sophie is the best character in movie's history.
I really believe it should have been a tie between Meryl Streep and Jessica Lange. Even though it's true that Meryl was PERFECT, so was Jessica. Two landmark performances that just happened to come along in the same year. The fact that Meryl mastered two languages (and the appropriate accents) may be what tipped the scale in her favor. However, as far as raw human emotion goes, both her performance and Jessica's performance were on the same level of excellence. Many people believe the Academy compensated Jessica by giving her the Supporting Actress Oscar, for losing to Meryl in the Lead Actress category. I think so too.

She's so adorable! And she absolutely deserved this. Her speech was just so darn cute, I couldn't help smiling through the whole thing!
Gosh, I love her so much!
Meryl, you are such a gifted woman... I could never forget the impact of that powerful performance and specifically scene of the chosen... you are great!
The Oscars were so classy back then in the dark, now its all lit up and very disappointing...the Oscars have lost that mystique they once had
Technology is to blame.
The movies themselves have lost a lot of their mystique, so perhaps it's appropriate the Oscars have as well.
Pascoe Braun Putz!
And too political. I stopped watching about 10 yrs ago.
rgrndu cheers m8
An amazing performance, unique!
The academy loved Jessica's performance in "Frances" but, knowing who the real winner would be and that she stood a weak chance, they gave her the supporting award for "Tootsie" as consolation so they would both win. So technically Jessica won for "Tootsie", but she really won for "Frances"
@@dinastergiou709 Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice would still beat her.
She was like a COMPLETELY different person in that film!
I agree with you so much exept for the Jennifer Lawrence, I think she does deserve what she won, but agree so so much with Meryl winning at least six. sigh!
And edward norton would have one not Cuba gooding jr
Nick Peek I knew a girl with emotional problems like Jennifer Lawrence's character, and let me tell you, she was spot on. She earned that oscar.
Nick Peek I agree about Streep, DeNiro, and Close. I think Streep should also have won for "A Cry in the Dark", "The Bridges of Madison County", and "The Devil Wears Prada", giving her 6 by now.
Leo didn't deserve any yet. He definiyely deserved the nominations but not the awards
So thoroughly deserved. She's so unlike anyone else. So intense and authentic..
Meryl Streep was always my favorite and always will be.Top spot with Al Pacino
The times when Meryl was actually excited for winning :')
now she gets bored
She has only won 3 Oscars so far, but has far surpassed Katharine Hepburn for nominations.
@@kiyo6211 have you seen her speeches? She's always excited to win awards. It doesn't happen as often as people think.
Undoubtedly the prettiest group of nominees you'll ever see.
She has such a beautiful voice, so was Julie Andrew. It was so unfair that they only give out 1 award per year while these ladies were all very great. Each and every one of them should be given an award.
Mai Duong AndrewS
One of the all-time greatest performances on the silver screen. She deserved this Oscar®, no question about it.
A richly deserved Oscar!
Truly the greatest performance by any actor or actress.
+hithere327 You're probably right about actress. But I wouldn't say actor when you consider the work of the Brandos, the De Niros, the Pacinos, the Nicholsons the Duvalls, the Scotts, the Day-Lewises, etc.
Name the performance that is better.
Bobby De Niro in Raging Bull.

Im watching her most touching, brilliant performance in this incredibly heartfelt movie right now..and each time i do i say we are so blessed to have this wonderful artist, Ms Streep to watch over and over again .. God continue to bless you with your amazing career Ms. Streep..i cannot thank you enough for not only this deep soul grabbing movie but all of your movies..❤️🙏❤️👏🏆
no other performance ever moved me like her's in Sophie's Choice....exceptional beyond words...
such a great speech! She truly is the best actress on the face of the earth and we're privileged to live in a time when we get to not only be witness to her talent but to watch her evolve. Her talent says a lot about the human experience and her personal ethos. An incredible woman.
Well said!
Meryl bette and kate are the 3 goddesses of the movies and all 3 has a really claim for the top spot Meryl for consistent kate cause the older she got the better she was and bette cause she was the best of the golden era 1929 to 1959
i love the actresses's shy expressions when their names were announced. i find them so naturally beautiful compared to current actresses
So badass that Stallone presented this. Makes this incredibly iconic Oscar win that much more iconic.
Jessica Lange was awesome in 'Frances'.
Jessica Lange should be able to get awards for accepting the last thing.
That was overacting, the academy did right giving to Meryl
@@maylee261 lolzys overacting, I don’t think so, although I think Teri garr in tootsie was robbed
@@maylee261 Oh please. Just stop. She was stunning. Overacting? Nonsense.
I would like to thank Meryl's parents for have such a wonderful talented daughter.
What an amazing group of nominations, Julie, Jessica, Sissy, and Meryl!
The reason for the huge golden dress was due to her being 8 months pregnant
She was pregnant with Mamie and this was in April. Mamie wasn't born till Aug, so she was only about 5-6 months here.
2012 she wore a gold dress also and won 🏆
my favorite actress and role model and forever will be. meryl streep deserves every oscar and more
I just finished reading Styron's novel for the second or third time and only wept at the end, absorbing the full scope of that literary masterpiece once more; it is a stunningly tragic saga.
Never read the book but love the movie
This is perhaps the most well deserved Oscar ever !! When I first watched Sophie’s choice I wasn’t a Meryl fan but fml she was beyond amazing I cried like a baby for like a hour. She is that good I have to agree with a lot of people on here best performance EVER by and actress or actor!!
2nd best vivien leigh 1st in gone with the wind
Over all look how polite she is!!!! Incredible
Jessica Lange! Damn this was a good category that year. It's like the best of the best of all time in one category.
Her performance was haunting and heart touching at the same time. This movie still feels like a sweet dream.
I love how you can still slightly hear a Polish accent throughout her speech :D such a wonderful, awe-inspiring woman!!
The most amazing acting I have ever seen. I still fall in love with her performance 40+ years later and still weep with Sophie.
One of the TOP 3 BEST PERFORMANCES OF ALL TIME BY AN ACTOR OR ACTRESS. Meryl was robbed so many times at Oscars, she should have won at least 5 times already.
The most robbed was deborah kerr 7 nominations 0 Oscar's
Meryl totally deserved that Oscar. But, so did the other nominees. What a list.
The change in her voice is just wow but her voice is amazing still
Sophie's Choice was an AMAZING film. Streep outdid herself!
There are some rare performances by women through the years. Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice, Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose, and Elizabeth Taylor is Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf.
Yes......
Okay, but Sly presenting the award for the leading actress is literally everything. He’s so stunning and such a gentleman. He was also very happy for Meryl that she won ❤
"Ample make this bed
Make this bed with awe
In it wait till judgment break
Excellent and fair "
I loved this poem because I loved sophie's character. Love you Meryl
By Emily Dickinson...the poem read by Stingo as an eulogy as they lay there in bed...lifeless...Sophie went to join her children butchered in Autchwitz....
The best performance ever by an actor!!! Omg...she's amazing!!!! Love Meryl!!!
Silkwood ITS her Best after Sophies Choice
Did she win for the Iron Lady

There was simply no one else to give this award to that year. She blew everyone else away.
Every single actress in that category is incredibly talented and amazing
Marvellous Meryl streep 😍😍😘
Meryl has represented so many wonderful characters and women.
Despite the fact that were all amazing, I think in Sophie's choice, she did a legendary job.
And personally, I think Sophie is the best character in movie's history.
The single greatest performance of all time.
Sylvester was stunning! And the Oscar 🥳 was well deserved for Meryl
Always love how just normal and funny she always is
I really believe it should have been a tie between Meryl Streep and Jessica Lange.
YOU SAY IT ALL HERE. IN RETROSPECT, I REMEMBER 'FRANCES'
MORE THAN I DO 'SOPHIE'S CHOICE'.
+Mark Brown That was a great way to put it.
Nah
Meryl was better!
"......my speech" XD That part left me in stiches !! Meryl Streep ! She's simply the best !! Gorgeous stunning versatile !! What a person !!
Sophie's Choice killed me
And the winner is...Marvelous Meryl Streep. Never fails to bring a big smile no matter how many times I hear them
