British actors are always humble when it comes to awards and British actresses don't seem to win in Best Actress Oscars that much. From 1980 to 2005 there are only 2 British actresses won leading category : Jessica Tandy and Emma Thompson.
Like MIchelle in that film but she should have won for the Fabulous Baker Boys. Thompson was the clear winner for Howard's End. One of the few actors to win all of the major critics awards (NY, LA, National Board of Review, and National Society of Film Critics). Interestingly enough, her wonderful performance in The Remains of the Day, was up against Holly Hunter in The Piano, who also won all four of those top awards, and I might add, they both also won the Globe, which in my humble opinion, mean less, given they tend to judge by star power, less than actual acting.
Basically she's spontaneous... that's why the speech always appears genuine. It just shows in many of her interviews. You have to only memorize some points...and just delve into the moment, LOVE HER !
Emma Thompson is one of the best, beauty, brains and brilliant humor all wrapped into one classy, courteous and courageous package. She is always entertaining to watch, though in the most interesting, breathtaking and impressive way. She might be the greatest actress of our era (post 1980), alongside Meryl Streep and Judi Dench. Emma is an amazing woman, that's for sure, and very much unlike most of her peers she doesn't take herself too seriously. Talent wise, she can't be beat, thoroughly commendable, legitimate and awesome as it is, and spellbinding as she can be. Every time she wins an award of such a high and prestigious caliber the Gods of justice dance a spirited jig way up in the realm of the otherworldly, and the afterlife blazes with surreal sunshine. Brilliant!!
For my money, the most deserving acting Oscar in the last 25 years or so. She was simply brilliant in that movie. If you haven't seen "Howards End," you really should.
Dame Emma Thompson is one of the finest actresses in the world. From "Howard's End" to "Angels in America" to "Harry Potter", she has shone like the sun in every role.
OMG.. all the ladies nominated were all treasured actors..😘😘 Susan Sarandon, Catherine D, Michelle P..Emma ..goodness..they were all deserve to win that day..💪💪
eastwoodkicksass The first time (this video) was very normal. Best actor presents best actress and vice versa (if the person come back in the following year).
Amazing speech. I'll be honest, Michelle Pfeiffer was my personal winner that year. My runners-up were Emma Thompson and Susan Sarandon. Anyway, I'm glad Emma won. She was fantastic in Howards End
Amazing how Anthony Hopkins presented both of her Oscars (this one particularly because the lead actor gave to his lead actress), and also that both acceptance speeches began with, "I really don't know how to thank the Academy..."
I love how the Brits deliver their thanksgiving speeches at the Oscars. No loss for words; still very eloquent and don't waste any second on their limited time. And witty, too. Just like Kate Winslet's speech as well.
emma deserved it and howards end was the most exciting film besides beauty and the beast but that was another ceremony oh yeah oddly best film the other year silence of the lambs beating hairy guy and book freak 🤣
To me, it also harkens back to a time when the Oscars were more about the work, and less about appearances. Glam squads, branding, designers labels, etc. It’s all all so slick and commercialized now, there is no room for an actor or actress to express their individuality.
Love her! Great acceptance, witty, sharp, and yet somehow humble all at the same time. It's no wonder Vanessa Redgrave was thrilled for her. Those British actors and actresses always seem to be most prepared and normally give the best acceptances, could that be why they take home the trophies so often?
Dan Tee I RECKON! Emma Thompson deserved (at least) an Oscar nomination for her performance as P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks. Just like Julie Andrews won an Oscar for her portrayal as Mary Poppins. Emma Thompson should have received an Oscar for her portrayal of author, P.L. Travers!
The 90s had the best actresses of any decade, there was Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, Emma Thompson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jodie Foster. They had beauty, intelligence, strength of character.
Emma Thompson a class actor in her own terms!!.. I just saw again Howards End, and as good as the movie is, I couldn't help but arguing that Thompson gave a much better and complex performance in another James Ivory film, "The Remains of the Day" than on this one for which she won the Oscar. Howards End it's not for everybody, it is kinda slow at times, but as a whole, it survives because of many things such as the superb acting, the cinematography, the art direction, and an excellent Original score. Anthony Hopkins gives one of the most underrated performances and he should've been nominated for an Oscar that year . Whatever the case is, Howards End it's one of the best movies from the last century.
She was always great...her second spring several years ago was wonderful but she hqd never really stopped working...one of the most devoted and hardest working actresses over the last 30 plus years. She deserves 5 of these!!!!
I think she is a great actrees... She deserved the Oscar that year... I really miss to watch her in outstanding roles, such as In the name of the father, The remains of the day, Howard's end, Sense and sensibility... I love the way you perform those characters, Emma
THAT's how you give an acceptance speech people: no crying, keep it short, throw in a few jokes, be grateful (without going overboard: it's only an oscar for god's sake) and graceful, thank the right people and then leave.

Isn’t it amazing how graceful everyone was compared to award shows now? Don’t see Anthony Hopkins running up and punching Billy Crystal here do you? Well deserved by Emma Thompson - she is amazing in every single role she plays
It should be noted that a total of about 11 people have received Writing and Acting nominations in the same year. They are: Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Sylvester Stallone, Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, Massimo Troisi, Billy Bob Thornton, Matt Damon, Roberto Benigni, George Clooney, and Emma Thompson. I was minus 6 years old when this took place and i am very grateful that i found out about Emma Thompson because she has all the good qualities anyone could ever ask for.

The Academy lacked the courage to indicate one of the most daring works of that year. In Basic Instinct, Sharon Stone magnetizes the canvas every time she is on the scene, Catherine Tramell's sensuality goes far from a free trivialization of nudity to a game of manipulation and domination over her partner and control of the situation that is interpreted in a way spectacular by Sharon Stone, one of the best female performances of the 90s and that redefined a genre and marked an era of pop culture. And when we look at the list of nominees for Oscar 93 for best actress, we see how absurd that snub was, because although they were excellent, none of the nominees that year performed better than Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct and that even includes own Oscar winner who was Emma Thompson.
I saw the movie an enjoyed it but it never occurred to me it would be the stuff of Oscars. I though the acting by everyone was first-rate but, again, had never thought of an Oscar for Emma Thompson. So I watched the movie again and then it all made sense. The acting was so superlative I think I forget I was watching acting.

Good actress

There's something about Emma Thompson...I just love her.
I like how Glenn Close is so happy for Emma
Aw cmon, Close is a brilliant actress!
Glenn should've have his Oscar for Fatal Attraction of course by that time. How unfair the Oscars always have been for her.
She was amazing she probably was a fan of Emma ❤👍🏻
@@ranmsesmendiola5681 fatal attraction released 6 years before this one so that film was nominated in 1988 Oscars
She was tremendous with Hopkins in The Remains of the Day too.
+TheCrunchySopa she deserves an oscar for that, a much more powerful role than in "howards end".
+Yun Yi Yes! I thought I was alone in this. Although she is magnificent in both films, I almost fell asleep watching Howard's End.
She was absolutely superb in the remains of the day, and so was Hopkins.
I love her so much together with Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of the day!!!!!!!!!They are so a beautiful couple!!!!
Her competition was much stronger that year.
Emma Thompson is one of the best, beauty, brains and brilliant humor all wrapped into one classy, courteous and courageous package. Taylor Ahern so true! Don't forget Jessica Lange and Glenn Close. I think that's the top 5 😉
Taylor Ahern are you a writer Taylor? :)
Taylor Ahern she won two. For her screenplay adaptation of sense and sensibility
Beautifully put Taylor. Amen.
@@YiskaGudricht 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😄😄😄😄
She gives the best acceptance speeches!!! I could listen to her all day
I could listen to them all day long too. And it would be a pleasure.
The genuine shock is amazing! Hopkins and Pacino said she was going to win. She just couldn't believe it. What a wonderful structured performance!
Fun fact: Emma won everything else she was nominated for that year.
Nope, she won Best Screenplay in 1996
That’s why all the other nominees we’re like: :/
@@gregdelisle6751 What the OP means is that Emma Thompson won all acting awards she was nominated for in 1993 for Howard's End.
She did much ado about nothing with Kenneth Branagh

Funny how Anthony Hopkins presented Oscars to Emma Thompson twice.
VoidedMirror I just noticed that, how ironic?
It is not ironic. That's not what ironic means
Not only that, but she was the last in the list of nominees he read out, both times.
morganfisherart I think it’s done alphabetically. T for Thompson, it isn’t surprising she was last both times
They choose who they want to present the oscar to them.
Dame Emma Thompson is one of the finest actresses in the world. From "Howard's End" to "Angels in America" to "Harry Potter", she has shone like the sun in every role.
Why is it that the British always give the most eloquent acceptance speeches. They have class and finesse in all they do.
I think... Because you are comparing them to Americans and so it’s too easy to sound classy and sophisticatsd
Gabriel Barrueco yeah you are probably right. But I mean look at the acceptance speech that Regina King gave and that is total class....
I think... Yeah, but the same is said of French people for instance. I think Americans tend to find Europeans in general elegant and stuff
@@Gabriel-hs9mv not Germans and Italians or the Spanish
Big Boy I think they do. They find Penelope Cruz or Donatella Versace really classy in a European sort of way.
The combination of her with Anthony Hopkins is always a treat !
Emma always makes the best speeches!
Funniest when she happens to be tipsy....
How gorgeous is it that Anthony Hopkins gives the award? Most gorgeous Merchant Ivory film. Only Emma and Tony.
Her reaction is priceless
I love that she won, but it's rare that she reacted that way because that year she was the favorite for the award.
I love Glenn Close's reaction and I love Emma.
Emma, You will live eternally. Lovely human being.

Catherine Deneuve is gorgeous!
@Renan C. Maia That's exactly what I was thinking.
I am grateful that I was able to see such a dignified Oscar winner for the first time in my life.
Vanessa Redgrave is beautiful in the audience! She's a wonderful actress.
Gracefully chewing gum, love that!
Anthony Hopkins also presented Emma Thompson her other Oscar for Best Screenplay for "Sense & Sensibility".
Jodie Foster and Emma Thompson should get oscars only for being alive
Anthony Hopkins presented Emma Thompson with both of her Oscars. What a coincidence.
eastwoodkicksass The first time (this video) was very normal.
Really? I think Pfeiffer is great but Love Field is not a good film. She should have won for The Fabulous Baker Boys in the 1990 Oscars, though.
I would have personally nominated Meryl for Death Becomes Her but that wasn't exactly an oscar type of performance.
Amazing how Anthony Hopkins presented both of her Oscars (this one particularly because the lead actor gave to his lead actress), and also that both acceptance speeches began with, "I really don't know how to thank the Academy..."
Did she actually win or did he just read her name and everyone had to go with it...
