RIP to Louis Gossett Jr, great man and great actor. You will be sadly missed, Good Sir.
echo that for me
@@robertfunk2796 He was excellent as Gunnery Sergeant Foiey.
" Alrght Mayo, on your feet." One of the best lines ever. He doesn't judge him. He broke him down, saw what was inside and now chooses to work with him.
glen the philosopher
This is such a bad film.
@@FriendlyCroock really , how so
@@FriendlyCroock clown 🤡 take
@@Lance37a what. Just because i don't like the film that you like?
RIP Mr Gossert
You will be forever remembered as a gentleman and legend
Yes❤
FACTS!
We lost a legend today. Rest in peace, Lou Gossett Jr.
yes indeed a true legend ✌️
Before R. Lee Ermey, there was Louis Gossett Jr.
RIP Louis!!!
You embodied acting talent.
R. Lee Ermey was a REAL marine drill instructor. He was the real deal. But Mr. Gossett did one hell of a job. May he RIP. 🙏🏿 🤲
R. Lee Ermey, Louis Gossett Jr., And Warren Oates. (Stripes!)
Amen
RIP Louis Gossett Jr. (May 27, 1936 - March 29, 2024), aged 87
You will be remembered as a legend
Gossett was perfect in that part. Wonderful actor. RIP.
Great scene where he broke down and dug down to everything he had, and humbled himself, a lesson in life
So true. You see it.
💯
Officer and a Gentleman, Enemy Mine, Iron Eagle and many more appearances throughout the years. As a Gen X'er, you made my childhood the best ever... RWG Mr. Gossett! 🙏
Never been a Sci-Fi fan however Enemy Mine is one of my favorite films
Gossett conveyed a universal connection that transcended enemies and species to a shared 'Truth is Truth'
Forgot about Enemy Mine, another great one!
5:44 "I got nowhere else to go..." Pure and total despair.
That disclosure made complete sense to me after I had served a couple of years in the Air Force at my first duty station. More than half of my peers and coworkers had no desire to visit their families during the holiday seasons. These same people joined the military to escape from the families for whatever rationale. As for me, I enlisted (at the end of year) in the AF the same year this movie was released serving 20 years. My childhood was great and chose the same path as my father and his father who both retired enlisted after 20 years of service.😊
@locknload4691 I salute you sir
Damn, that touched my heart when he said “I got nowhere else to go!”😭 That was a great scene!🎬👏🏾
First movie that came to mind. RIP LOUIS GOSSETT Jr.
SAME HERE RIP LOUIS GOSSETT JR
this movie is timeless...40 years later and still has the same effect on people
There r all classics from
20th century
I just watched it again last night. Great movie.
RIP Mr. Gossett. Louis Gossett Jr was 87. Thank you.
*87 ... but yes, a legendary actor who will never be forgotten! 🕯️🕊️
@@SeanTheDon-vj4kw thanks mate. My keyboard on this pos google pixel phone always types the number right next to it. Thanks. I edited it.
Rest in Peace Lou Gossett Jr
As a 1995 Army ROTC grad, this brings tears to my eyes!! I pass this on to all of my fellow GMC grads!! DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY! Character ABOVE ALL!!!
That’s how true love should start RIGHT THERE. 🙂
Hi Louis Gossett Jr., YOU ARE THE REASON I BECAME AN ARMY OFFICER!!!!!! Thank you so much 😊
Shame that West Point took the words Duty, Honor, and Country out of their mission statement
Oscar worthy scene, for both
As a soldier he captured this 💯 a true legend
It's a story of how a kid with a rotten background, an attitude problem and nothing to go home to makes it as an officer and gets a girl. This is a feel good film that was the best film Richard Gere ever made.
It's when the kid finally learns how to care about others and turn his attitude around that he becomes something worthy as an officer and gets the girl.
As far as coming of age in the military movies go, I liked this one more than Top Gun, which I also liked.
Debra Winger too. She didn't play games with Mayo even though she hated her life and wanted better for herself. She walked away with her dignity in the hopes that Mayo would see how utterly alone he really was and want her too.
Internal Affairs is even better.
@@stanley2004 It's a completely different genre.
This is a classic military movie, and Louis Gossett Jr and Richard Gere played their roles exceptionally. RIP Louis Gossett Jr, we lost an exceptional Hollywood legend.
R.I.P. Louis Gossett Jr. (1936 - 2024)!
R.I.P. to a TRUE Legend.
He made every role that he played, Something Special.
I named my horse Mayo. Sometimes, Mayo-neighs!
Go to hell and take my like 😂
This was the culminate scene in the movie. It was a make it or break it. Zack endured to the end. RIP to Louis Gossett, Jr. The one the Oscar for his role. Genuine.
rest in LOVE SIR.
Wave goodbye to your buddies Mayo. Oh, i forgot, you don't got any buddies only cus-ta-mas.😂
Artisc tic performance by Mr Gossett Jr. Been an honor watching you sir. Farewell & thank you for your contribution to the performing arts.
One of the things I love about Gossett in this film is his masculinity. I especially love the way he walks. " Don't you eyeball me, boy" is one of my favorite lines of dialogue. R.I. P.
REST IN PEACE KING 👑 🙏🏿 💔
Louis Gossett Jr was coached in his role by R. Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket.
Foley, was the best thing to happen to Mayo. Turned him into a team player...instead of a selfish prick!
A selfish prick is an excellent trait for an Air Force Throttle Jockey (i.e., fighter pilot) but not so much when he/she attains the rank of O-6 becoming either a Group or Wing commander which is the normal career path for these Zipper-suited Sun gods😉
@@locknload4691 Sir this is a Wendys
@@xrmatt1010 "Trainee! This place isn't Burger King meaning you don't get it your way!" or something similar was a common Air Force TI retort when I attended AF Basic 40 years ago. Today, I've heard that AF Basic instituted group hugs while being cognizant of the Trainees' preferred pronouns. 🙃
Which industries celebrate being egotistical?
@2:49 "she may not make it through the program BUT SHE GOT MORE HEART AND MORE CHARACTER THAN YOU WILL EVER HAVE.". 🗣️AND STOP 🛑 EYEBALLING👀 ME BOY🙄
As a former Marine...I've spent most of my adult life judging others by those two traits.
Fellow Jarhead here.
That line, and how he delivered it, were straight MCRD. Great acting by Gossett there.
Semper Fi
I was a DI at the academy and teaching these type of people is a lot more difficult!!
Absolutely one of the best and most memorable roles in cinema history.
Rip Mr Louis gossett Jr 🙏🏿🙏🏿🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
I would've surely flunked😅 Much love & respect Mr Gossett. Recently finished Upstairs & Downstairs in the Whitehouse . Excellent performance in everything you did. Thank You Sir, may Heaven be your Reward.❤
Terrific film, wonderful acting from Richard Gere, and oh boy that Marine Sgt!!! Louis Gosset, absolutely spot on. 😊
Agreed. Stellar performances from both of them.
Gunnery Sergeant
Finally the truth at the end. He has nowhere else to go. It's either rise up or die. Be a better man or die. It was at that moment that he finally earned some respect from the officer.
Very astute.
Don't you eyeball me, boy!
🤣🤣🤣
One of the best movie scenes of my childhood and beyond
Nothing personal. That he's doing it shows that he sees strength and potential in him.
We’re all here to honor you SIR Louis Gosset JR
Just a FYI, the filming site is Fort Worden State Park located in Port Townsend, WA. I live within two miles of the fort and have walked on the gun battery in the film and the beach by the lighthouse. I think about the movie quite often when there.
Looks beautiful. Louis Gosset Jr has a video on here where he goes back to Port Townsend 25 yrs after the movie.
I always thought it wuz an actual military base@@trawlins396
RIP Louis 😔
The best depiction of a “significant emotional event” that evinces real change.
My condolences to the family & Rest in Peace
Excellent drilling by gosset! Whipped him into shape!
Yassss! Such a powerful scene by two awesomely great actors, 2 of the GOATs!
Louis Gossett Jr. was one of the finest actors ever put on this earth. RIP.
Rest in peace! What an incredible performance!
I agree.
1:24 I think it's hilarious that Foley is trying so hard to get enjoyment out of it, but he's just too pissed off he can't. LOL
Dont you eyeball me boy lmao , I remember those day at RTC San Diego Ca,1984 !
God, I love this scene!!
Still love this movie, thank you Louis Gossett Jr for the entertainment❤
I served 26 -1/2 years in the Army, what people should understand is that when a Soldier goes through Basic Training a majority of new recruit Soldiers will understand very quickly, conform, and obey the orders of the Drill Sergeant/Drill Instructor. It's a process of mentally/psychologically stripping down all the bad habits/behaviors as a civilian.
Once the Drill Sergeants/Instructors mentally strip a Soldier down and instill strict military discipline within you, your trained on basic Soldiers task and everything there is to know about being a Soldier. However, there are always a few Maverick Soldiers that will follow the orders of the Drill Sergeants/Instructors, but occasionally still buck the system.
That is exactly what Richard Gere was doing, so that is why Drill Instructor Gossett had to be much harder on him with the goal of pushing Mayo to his mental breaking point and Gossett was successful. Once the breaking point is reached, training will continue. If the breaking point is not reached and the new recruit Soldier keeps displaying traits of being non-disciplined, they are sent home as part of failing Basic Training.
😢 R.I.P Mr. Louis Gossett Jr. 💙 Saw this movie when I was 10 on the VHS. Dad was stationed in Schweinfurt Germany at the time. Loved this movie. Awesome actor! 👌
R.I.P. Louis Gossett Jr. 🤦🏾♂️🙏🏽
I don't remember the customers comment! I'm getting old. I'm 51 years old. Love this movie.
Young!
A splendid actor and human being.... he touched a lot of others...
Love Officer and Gentlemen 💙
That shocking stare that Foley gives @ 5:40 & 5:52 was a realization that he finally found Mayo's weakness.
A powerdful scene that took Mayo (off guard) into child regression.
This is the moment when Foley realizes the core of Mayo & is a huge turning point of the film.
Yes!!!!
😢 RIP MR. LOUIS GOSSETT JR AND THANK YOU.
This is the kind of film that I watched with my family from the time I was three/four years old (83'-84') that truly only gets better with age. It's a timelessly beautiful tale of misdirected masculinity, that gets shaped and molded into a true character. I just found out about Louis Gossett Jr.'s passing because this came up on my feed, and I'm heartbroken but thankful of this timeless performance, along with the peerless Richard Gere of course.
HE ABSOLUTELY KILLED THAT ROLE.
R.I.P. 🙏🏾 Louis Gossett Jr 🫶🏽
I've seen this movie so many times and will watch it many more times. I never tire of the exceptional acting of both Louis Gossett Jr and Richard Gere. They did their best work here. R.I.E.P Louis Gossett Jr, you were a gentleman and a great actor. 😢🙏🏿❤️
Rest in Peace to Louis

Sadly we lost him recently 😢
Best movie ever... Luv Richard
"I got nowhere else to go!" isn't that all of us?
Louis Gossett Jr. One of the best! RIP
RIP Lou
Imagine DMX playing Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley
He would've been perfect for that part if they had done a remake while he was alive.
RIP
RIP LOUIS😢
Richard Gere was really in Pain, he had a blister or a pain on his back, he didn't tell anyone and when the scene finished, his back was filled with blood. He did it because he wanted to make it more authentic. My Father watched this scene and he said I would have DOR'd.
I LOVE this movie and scene!!!
2:08 I forgot you don’t have any buddies. Only KUH-STUM-AHS!!
🤣 loved that part
DS Foley was like the father figure type you needed in the military.
"Get back to work *hitstains."
I always loved the part where his friends rode by on the boat.
