  • Zack is determined to go through with his childhood dreams of becoming a Navy pilot.
Upon arrival at AOCS, Zack and his fellow AOCs are shocked by the harsh treatment they receive from their head drill instructor, Marine Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley.
Zack and fellow candidate Sid Worley meet two local young women Paula Pokrifki and Lynette Pomeroy, who are factory workers, at a Navy Ball.
    Sid DORs without saying goodbye.
He goes to Lynette's house and proposes marriage, but she turns him down and berates him for DORing.
Despondent over the situation, Sid checks into a motel and commits suicide.
Zack shows up for graduation and is sworn into the Navy with his class.
Zack seeks out Paula at the factory, declaring his love to her.
He picks her up and walks out with her in his arms to the applause of her colleagues, including Lynette.

He just didn't understand women. The Richard Gere character really didn't care. Sure it worked out for him, but if it didn't he would have moved on, and had the career to find someone just as good. Being a JC penney's manager wasn't as awful a career track as it is today, but it wasn't great then either. Maybe in real life his looks would have been enough as that's awfully important to women, but young women think tall good looking men grow on trees and there's bound to be a more ambitious one that will take after her.

I also noticed that in Movies when someone wears a Corduroy Jacket, something bad always happens. In The Talented Mr. Ripley Phillip Seymour Hoffman (RIP) makes a snide remark about Tom wearing A Jacket like that in Italy in The Summer. Then in The Paper Chase (1973) Hart wears a Corduroy Jacket on The First Day Of School and doesn't know about The First Day's Assignments. Then Alex on Degrassi always wears a "Jacket" like that and then his Girlfriend Tessa cheats on him with Yick.

There were thousands of outsiders who were making big money- to be fair so were many of the local men- and the poorer local women who had few prospects were drawn to them.
