Spoiler: The end credits of the Margaret episode on The Crown's final season are a surprising tearjerker. I would've normally bypassed the end credits where they play music, but I had the subtitles on and it read "King George VI" when a man's voice started singing. So they used the duet Margaret and her father sang in the early series episode where he died, and that duet had been their last interaction together...oh my god, I immediately started bawling. Now father and daughter were finally together again. A touch of genius to bring that song back.

Queen Elizabeth's sister Princess Margaret is rather a tragic yet very fascinating figure. ❤ Despite the occasional tension that you would expect from sisters, you can tell that Elizabeth and Margaret loved each other. 💖 And despite her wish to find a purpose, I think she had one all along, being her sister's closest companion. While it's a shame she couldn't marry for love, she at least pushed for royals of the future to be allowed to divorce AND marry for love. She was a very glamorous icon of her generation! 💕 And I'm sure Princess Margaret is very happy to be with her beloved sister Queen Elizabeth and her beloved parents again. 💖

It's funny you say that about Margaret wanting to find purpose in her life. NOT in the haha funny kind of way, but in the sense that even Royals can have feelings like that. I often struggle in my life wondering "what my purpose is" for being here on Earth could possibly be. It makes Margaret very relatable to me. But like you said she was Elizabeth's closest companion & supporter all throughout her life through better and for worst until the very end ❤.

It's not as cold and callous as you have portrayed it Whilst Margaret initially believed she wanted to marry him, after they had their 2 years apart from one another, she had already moved on from him. She had partied it up whilst he was away whereas he didn't. When he returned she didn't have the same level of passion for him anymore So even if she was given the Ok to marry, she wouldn't and she didn't. She could've married him, but she'd be without her title and position as the Heir apparent after Elizabeth .
The Royals aren't a vindicative restrictive family that make decisions based on wealthy or status. They're not controlling in the way you've described They're simply a family @@IDGAF_AboutYourLuckyCharms_238

It was the worst thing that ever happened to her father and the family blamed his early death on that stress. For George VI coronation, his daughters wore silver crowns with gilding, not gold crowns, which would have been far too heavy for such young children to wear.
    "Us four" or "We four"?
At the time, Margaret announced that "...being mindful of the churches teachings...." she would not be marrying Townsend. A divorce so soon after the abdication was then unthinkable. Margaret's glamorous and luxurious lifestyle, and her royal title were so much a part of her very being, that to lose it all, even for love and a happy relationship, wasn't something she was able to do. The government knew that.

Antony was more… commoner-adjacent than anything. His father and paternal grandfather were both knights, his brother-in-law was a viscount, and his half-brother and step-father were earls.
Also, Margaret being matched with with King Michael of Romania is kind of funny. She wasn’t the first either, as the Nazi German government had actually hoped to get him to marry Princess Irmingard of Bavaria, a granddaughter of the last King of Bavaria, and his actual wife Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma, who he actually met at Elizabeth and Philip’s wedding
24:42 Senior, but not first. The first was the 1901 divorce of Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (who was also a Princess of the United Kingdom) from her husband Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine. Victoria would remarry 4 years later.

And to add, two of his children married to the best of British nobility - David, now the 2nd Earl of Snowdon, was married to Serena Stanhope, daughter of the 12th Earl of Harrigton (who was then Viscount Petersham), one of the richest peers of the land. Lord Harrington owned vast estates in Ireland and the UK, but the family is low profile (he’s not active in the House of Lords nor seen in society events). There’s also Lady Frances, Antony’s daughter from his second marriage, who married Rodolphe von Hofmannsthal, who is descended from Austrian nobility (his great-grandfather was the famed poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and their family has “von” in their prefix as they were in the rank of Edler, the lowest hereditary rank of the Austrian peerage), and British nobility (his grandmother, Lady Elizabeth Paget, was one of the train bearers of Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother) at the 1937 Coronation. Lady Elizabeth’s father is the 6th Marquess of Anglesey, and her grandfather is the 8th Duke of Rutland. The famed socialite, Lady Diana Cooper, is Rodolphe’s great-great aunt).

Not strictly true. King Edward VIII was not allowed to marry a divorce and remain Which is part of the reason that Margaret was not allowed to marry Peter and retain her status and place in the line of accession.
Margaret could have married him - no one could have stopped her, but she would have had to relinquish Her royal status and place in the line of succession, as Edward had done.

John Scott, the future duke of Buccleuch, would have been a good choice, allowing Margaret to be "queen" of a vast estate. But Margaret avoided politics and Scott would serve as an MP before succeeding his father as duke. Margaret was close to her father and totally devastated by his death. Peter Townsend was a strong support for her in her grief just as Philip was there to support Elizabeth. If the king had lived, the romance with Townsend never would have taken off.

Denying her daughters a more rounded and inclusive education was a rather retrograde decision, even if Elizabeth and Margaret weren't expected to do much more than marry Dukes/Princes and live quietly (by royal standards). 🤔They certainly weren't lacking resources to pay for it.
I understand Margaret's bitterness over that.

    • @MelhorAinda

In the video it mentions she had a 2nd cesarean with Princess Margaret. OBGYNs and doctors back then (some still do today, not the vast majority of them) recommended after 2 C-Sections it was unwise and dangerous to try and have more children due to the risk of a uterine rupture (loss of any ability to have children not to mention life threatening). I think it's rather refreshing seeing a historical couple NOT obsessed over having a son. Even in this recent time and today, in monarchies and wealthy families around the world boys are still preferred.

In the Queen Mother's official biography, there's a letter she wrote after Margaret's birth detailing the hassles of following royal protocol so far away from London and declaring that her next child would be born in the capitol. So she hadn't on giving up on future children just yet. It does seem that the Queen Mother might have had difficulty getting pregnant in the first place, as it took 3 years from her wedding to the birth of her first child (of course, getting whooping cough on the honeymoon didn't help).

I came here because I am watching The Crown and I have got really interested on the story of Margaret's character on the show. Before I started watching the show, which I have, at first, started to watch because of some tiktok edits and scene snippets that I saw on the app, mostly of princess Diana and her character on the last season of the series, which spiked my interest on giving the show a try, because I wanted to see how princess Diana story would be portrayed on a show that has gained so much recognition from the public, I knew very little about Queen Elisabeth II, to the point where I didn't even know that she had a younger sister, but after gaining such a liking to the way Margaret's character is constructed and portrayed on the television, which is funny, considering the fact that what pulled my attention into watching it, was only the story of princess Diana, I decided to comment to thank you for making the video, and to say that, like I saw other people commenting too, I think Margaret would have been a good queen, If there ever existed a reality where she had to be one, also I think finding what our truest and most fulfilling purpose in life is, can be a tough task for anyone, and, not getting the chance to discover what role you are supposed to occupy while you are in your living and breathing form, certainly, can be devastating and insanely painful in regards to mental health, so, I just wish that she has the chance to rest in piece wherever she is.

Thanks, Lindsay, for detailing the years surrounding the Margaret Set. OTOH, you are absolutely wrong in saying there was some mystery about why Townsend & Margaret did not marry when she became 25. You have to read contemporaneous accounts from the time. The government was solidly against Margaret marrying Townsend. A member of Parliament spoke out vociferously against them marrying. Queen Elizabeth tried to broker a deal for her sister to marry and still retain her royal status, but the deal fell through. The fact is: Margaret & Townsend were deeply in love, and there is no question about that. Townsend had been banished to Belgium for two years because it was felt that distance would break up the relationship. But that did NOT happen. The two stayed in contact with each other over those two years. The truth is that behind-the-scenes, Margaret was told in no uncertain terms by courtiers and government officials that she would lose everything if she married Townsend, including her HRH, money, her place in the succession, and royal protection, etc. In effect, she was told to give up her very identity if she dared to marry Townsend. To make the cruelty worse, Margaret was forced to write a letter casting doubt on whether she was truly in love with Townsend. The letter was hidden away and then 'rediscovered' long after both Townsend and Margaret were dead and unable to counter the complete rewriting of their love story, which is ongoing. It's to the point where you, a dedicated researcher, can't speak the truth because it has been buried over with lies and false narratives. Margaret & Townsend can no longer speak, but please go deeper with your research. Look at Margaret's face in that car after the announcement she was giving up Townsend. She was devastated, and so was he. In silly, lovestruck fashion, they made a secret vow to each other that neither would ever marry. After a few years, a young model/ actress began working with Townsend as his secretary. Facially, she had a striking resemblance to Margaret, but she was taller. Townsend gave Margaret a heads-up before announcing his engagement. Margaret was distraught. She asked Townsend not to announce right away. Then she proposed marriage on-the-rebound to her cheating lover, Anthony Armstrong-Jones. (later named 1st Earl Snowdon). He only accepted Margaret's proposal in order to impress his estranged mother. 😳 🤦‍♀️ Obviously, their marriage was doomed to fail, and it did in miserable fashion. The only good that resulted from their marriage was their two children. The worst is that not only was Margaret's life destroyed by denying her marriage to Townsend, lies have been told since their deaths in order to try and absolve the government from their meddling involvement in the Windsors' affairs of the heart. Another life destroyed for similar reasons: William of Gloucester. Check out the RUclips documentary on him. The royals swept his entire existence under the rug after his death.
