I met her very briefly once. It was in 1977 when I was on a trip with my school. I was then 15 years old and could only understand a few words of English (I'm French). We were on the steps going up to St. Paul's Cathedral when someone came out making big gestures and closing the door to the public. There were about twenty of us on the steps when two huge cars stopped in front of the cathedral. An old lady got out of one car and 2 other people got out of the other car. The old lady was in front and went towards the front door. As I was almost in her way, she came to shake my hand with an incredible smile and say 2 or 3 words to me. Then she entered the cathedral. I knew from my teacher that she was the Queen Mother and that's when my legs started shaking :D She was just adorable.

What’s so remarkable about this woman who lived lavishly until the end, like there was no tomorrow. She spent millions of taxpayers money on clothing and other superficial rubbish. When she died, she left with millions in debt. Besides she was apparently extremely vindictive and nasty, especially toward princess Diana and making her country home available to Charles and Camilla. Who with a trace of decency, would do that ?

There are remarkable outcomes from all modern monarchies...but the one strongest trait of the British throne....between Elizabeth and her parents....first and foremost they were what love stories were made of. May God Bless us all and help us to heal this hate-filled world and help to return us to a time... where true love and peace were our guiding lights. May Heaven help all of us to end this terrible violence and hate that are spreading like poison around the globe. In the name of our Savior Jesus Christ ... Please Lord, help us all.

As an American , and now the matriarch of my family, I hope I live the long life as these women.

The moors came from North Africa and were mainly "mulattos", or even black whereby the natives of the Iberian Peninsula were Europeans and light skinned, so that the visible veins beneath the skin appeared blue! So "blue blood" originally meant "native" and "christian", regardless of one´s social position

I’ve always thought that the marriage of the Queen mother and the King was a testament to how love can support and lift us to become more than we ever thought we could be. They seemed to bring out the best of each other, but then the Queen mother did that for so many throughout her life. I truly believe that she was the reason for whatever happiness the King was able to find in his life. She was such a wonderfully caring woman, with a very big heart.
I have no doubt she did the same for her daughter the Queen when she was forced into her crown so unexpectedly, despite being completely grief-stricken - it’s very well known how much Queen Elizabeth depended on her mother those first years, and I was deeply saddened when the Queen mother passed away. She was always my favourite of all the Royals - she wasn’t at ALL politically correct in private, lol, but then it’s impossible to compare her using today’s standards. She was incredibly politically astute, and I’m sure the royal PR team must have absolutely adored her.
I’ve often found it a bit odd that more wasn’t made out of the fact that that horrible woman, Simpson, and Edward were actually nazi sympathizers. (She was truly an absolutely beastly woman 😠).

I find it fasinating how throughout Royal history the path of the crown has taken such divergent paths from what would have been originally expected. The crown has sat on many heads that were completely unexpected. In reality, Queen Elizabeth would be not be monarch if even the slightest difference happened during the past 1000 years. The stars pretty much had to align perfectly or we would see a very different royal family. I find it fasinsating how things like that happen.

What’s amazing is how passionate, how invested in the topic you all are. I’d love to see an age survey. However, from the content and knowledge(or lack of) shown, I’d guess most commenters are young, definitely under 30, many under 20, and I’d also guess a lot are American, and that very few are British.
So you can’t say the British Royal Family aren’t relevant. To inspire such passionate discussion in people who will never meet them, who have watched a 100 minutes about a lady whom many have trouble placing in history, whether or not the comments are favourable, means they are still relevant in some way.
I suppose it explains the massive tourist value which Royal supporters say the Royal family have for England.

Are you taking issue with young Americans finding such stories of state funded elitism fascinating? I always tell people that the queen may sit on a golden throne, but she still has to wipe her ass like anyone else. Although, she most likely enjoys a good stiff bide followed by a regimen including Masenguil Disposable Wipes. Out the door with purse in hand, clean as a whistle.

It's just a thought but maybe it's because the Queen mum was a queen consort, rather than the actual monarch? There's less weight on a consort's shoulders. I also think that when Elizabeth II unexpectedly became queen at a very young age, it was in an era that was still very much a man's world, and, if memory serves, Churchill referred to her as a 'slip of a girl'. Maybe she felt that, to take on the role and prove herself, she had to maintain a serious outlook. You can imagine how she would have been received if she'd been seen nationally as a 'slip of a girl'.

@@pennylando3145 -- Excellent perspective! These are plausible explanations for QE2's manner, which often strikes me as disdainful, stern and gloomy. However when it became obvious that Diana was more "popular" than QM and she refused to cover up "big ears's" infadelity the QM changed attitudes because of the adverse publicity Diana's actions brought on.

I enjoyed catching up with the history of Royal Family members of whom little is shown nowadays. I love the Monarchy and all the connections and continuity with the history of Great Britain. I think a lot of people take it for granted and do not know what a blessing it is. It belongs to the Nation, and it does not depend on personality so much as an appreciation of History.

She really wasn’t nice to Dianna, when Dianna lived with her before wedding ! QM was coaching or training her for her future duties ??
Most people who live there could care less about the pomp and circumstance !! Wasn’t that long ago that there was an uproar about none of the Royals paying taxes! They do now !!
William and Catherine will bring a newer younger generation as I think they are well liked ! And their children are adorable !

@Kandy Kandy The Queen's House of Windsor is of German paternal descent and was originally a branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This derived from the House of Wetin, which succeeded the House of Hanover to the British monarchy following the death of Queen Victoria, the wife of Albert, Prince Consort. Educate yourself and ease up on the caps , it just confirms you are emotionally driven and not too bright . She sympathised with Hitler and approach the British parliament about it . It is all documented .
