  • Queen Elizabeth II of the UK and common wealth realms has died after a reign of 70 years, 214 days. Her majesty passed away at her Balmoral estate in Scotland on the afternoon of September 8th, 2022. She was 96 years old. Because of the deterioration of her health, her family had been called to her bedside and she was surrounded by them when she died. Her son, Charles is now King and his wife, Camilla has officially been called Queen Consort by the Palace. They will remain at Balmoral tonight and return to London in the morning where the ascension council will declare him king and announce what his regnal name will be.
Elizabeth was the longest reigning monarch in British history and lived near center of many of the significant events of the last century. Her life has spanned a world war, the end of the British Empire, 14 British Prime ministers, countless social, political and technological changes and royal family upheavals. 4 out of 5 Britons were not alive before Elizabeth was Queen.
Let's take a look at her remarkable life...

@@dglynch222 My guess is that only the intro (up until 1:18) was recorded recently. Due to the change in audio quality at that very point, I assume the later part of the video (the one that recaps her life) was pre-recorded and probably already pre-rendered. The number of british PMs was probably a mistake.

It's so interesting to see some of the drastic changes throughout her life. She ultimately became queen because her uncle couldn't marry a divorced woman and keep his crown and now her son, that married a divorced woman, is king. It will be interesting to see how the next generation will continue to uphold and/or change traditional ideas moving forward. It's also amazing to me that my grandmother's generation saw the last coronation.

To be strictly accurate, Elizabeth would have become Queen eventually anyway if her uncle hadn’t abdicated as he never had any children. It just would have happened several years later, giving her a shorter reign.

This woman is simply an icon, completely unreplaceable, never to be copied, or forgotten. HM Queen Elizabeth II reigned most successfully, admirably, and aptly. The vow of lifelong service she made to her people in a radio speech early on in her life was most successfully kept, which in itself is remarkable. However, to me, my favourite image of the late queen was the pictures of her in her military uniform, during her time of service as a mechanic and jeep driver. I'm sorry to see her go, but she was 96, I can't say I'm surprised. She was, far as I can tell from America, a sweet lady who knew when to use her power and when to let the course of politics go the way the people voted for. I always knew this day was coming, but I don't feel less sorry for it happening.

Thank you Dr Grande for such an insightful and considered opinion. I'm in Australia and very surprised at how sad I am about our Queen"s passing. I cried when I heard the news. Then I spent a fruitless hour hunting around for a piece I wrote for our primary school's newsletter (1963 or 4) about the Queen's visit to the Snowy Mountains Scheme in Cooma, NSW. We waited for hours & eventually the Queen & Prince Phillip arrived & we all waved our flags & they walked around & greeted a few people ((not me! Devastated). I wrote "The Queen wore a yellow dress & Prince Phillip wore a brown suit ..". I just realised it was probably a Harris tweed suit. So, even in the old colonies, the Antipodes, she will be missed.

Tears streamed down my face when I heard the news. I still can scarcely take it in.
I wish we knew the details of her passing more intimately. Did she say any last words, what did her family say and how did they react? What exactly happened?
Years from now perhaps such details will emerge. But for now, all we can do is cry. My heart goes out especially to Prince Harry - I can only imagine how he feels having arrived to Balmoral just after her death.

We have lived through much uncertainty in recent times and the Queen was a steadfast presence. She served her country with grace, fortitude and dedication. Thank-you for your service- your Majesty.

This was wonderful! As always. I realize you probably put this together quite quickly, but I did notice that you accidentally slipped into the present-tense a few times - e.g. "she receives daily red boxes," etc. Not meant to be a criticism, it's going to be hard for us all to amend our language regarding both HER and His Majesty King Charles III after most of us ONLY ever living under/during Her reign.
