@@markbenjamin1703 it would only create a new power vacuum that would be filled by a fourth party, endorsed by and with support from those hypothetical allied forces until it grows too big and becomes the new opposing force against the alliance.
@@markbenjamin1703 I don’t know if it would have saved lives in numbers. Some who died may have lived but a lot who lived probably would have died. As Edward was openly anti semitic and had nothing against the extermination of the Jewish population, many more would have died in the concentration camps and more land would have been occupied by nazi Germany. Also if the English would have supported the Japanese in the war it would have been the and of east Asia as we know it. As Korea, the Philippines and Indonesia where basically slave colonies occupied by Japan they would probably have stayed that way for a long time. Also with England having territories in the area at the time, if they would have allied with the Japanese and perhaps given them Hong Kong and Singapore (then British territories) the Japanese would have gotten a stable strong hold and advanced in to China, Tebet and Mongolia and committed more war atrocities against the population (just look up the Nanjing massacre if you want examples). And remember that the US was not the strongest nation at the time, Britten was. It was WW2 that made American the military super power it is today by the help of the European alias. So if the UK and the commonwealth would have allied with Germany and Japan, millions more would have died, most of Europe would be speaking german, the jewish religion would almost if not completely be whipped out, most East Asian countries would speak japanese, most of the other asian countries culture would be destroyed like palaces, monuments and heritage. Which means no great wall, no forbidden city (which there where plans from the Japanese to destroy), no Angkor wat, no thousand year old Joseon palaces. All culture and history that was not Japanese would be gone, as was the plan if they weren’t stopped. Yes we probably wouldn’t have had Starlins crazy ass which would have been great but communism was already an idea in motion at that time, almost a century old so taking down Russia wouldn’t have done much in abolishing communism as a political concept. So yes we got a lot of bad but not near as much bad as if the Nazis had gotten their way.
@@rml9121 Harry and Meghan are in love and very happy. Harry decided to leave England so that his wife and children wouldn't be harassed like his mother Diana was. I support them 100%. And I don't like it when people say untrue things about them.
I always laugh when Edward and Wallis are held up as this great romance. He was needy due to a childhood deprived of parental affection due to cold, dysfunctional parents, and she just wanted the luxury of being a king's mistress. He started to believe he was in love with her to the point of obsession, but she honestly wasn't that into him. She bawled on a couch in France during his speech about the abdication because she was completely locked into it now. There's no leaving a man who gave up a throne for you. But she definitely cheated on him. I'm not even talking about the Ribbentrop rumors--it was way later on. They're a cautionary tale, not a romantic one.
THIS!! There have also been letters, discovered between Wallis & her ex-husband Ernest for a couple years, following her getting married to Edward where she’s lamenting & regretting her choice to end that marriage to get into this one. Ernest held the flame of hope alive for awhile then eventually accepted that it was over & moved on. Wallis always lived with regret, remorse & guilt.
This sounds like an very toxic and disturbing relationship. They both had some serious issues and it’s better they never ruled as king and queen. That would have been a total nightmare for the entire family and the country at large.
The alternate reality in the books and show The Man In The High Castle, where the Nazis won instead, must have been the same reality those two ruled as king in queen.
@@Valentina-Steinway Sounds more like Charles and Camilla. After all Charles was close to his nazi sympathizer uncle and likely shared some similar views to get along so well with him unlike the rest of the royal family. It would be awful to have someone like that be king. After all you never hear of people saying the queen should pass on the role to Charles. We all know he is literally rubbish.
@@Valentina-Steinway Just like his uncle, he would certainly make a bad king. It takes a certain type of person to be king/queen like strong character, duty to country before self etc. Just look at the past 2 rulers to see qualities that make a good ruler. Apart from being next in line, he has none of the qualities that would make him a good king.
The Royal family’s problems with relationships and marriage is basically because of the church and their stupid rules. Princess Margaret couldn’t marry one guy cause he was divorced Princess Diana and Prince Charles was basically an arranged marriage because Camilla was *gasp* not a virgin. But that doesn’t excuse how cold he was toward Diana and all the terrible things he put her through.
@@EH23831 to be honest even during Henry VIII's time he didn't just allow everyone to get divorced. only _men_ could file for divorce and only _rich men_ especially -- and of course, because Henry made himself the head of the church (the SUPREME head, i should say), only _he_ could okay the divorces. this isn't even to start on how Henry flip-flopped a bunch on Catholic and Protestant values/rituals (one day he's all for Mass and then he's not, and so on). so i'm not SUPER surprised that the Church of England opposed divorce up until recently -- but it's still hugely ironic and i was definitely quite confused at first considering it's origins.
Moral of the story: the right brother became king. The more I hear of George VI the more highly I think of him. The fact that he paid out of pocket for his brother and Wallis to live their extravagant lifestyle is way nicer than I would’ve been. I wouldn’t have kept sending him money and would’ve eventually said get a job bro.

I appreciate how Lindsay Holliday keeps it real about the history she discusses. Wallace and Edward's relationship is so often portrayed as some passionate love story🤮
There are many videos on RUclips that explain exactly how rough it was. He died alone because Wallis didn’t want to be bothered. Later on in life she regretted treating him so badly.
Its mainly cause their story is kinda similar to Harry & Megan so people draw both as similar fairy tale story in which a guy abandoned the throne of the most powerful empire for "true love"
It's a lot darker than that . I thought it was romantic when I was younger but when I watched a Documentary about them I saw there was a lot more to it. He wanted Wallis more than she wanted him. She loved the partying and the gifts and the Social climbing but not him.
His Abdication had a lot more Ramifications than Harry and Meghan, yes there are similarities with Harry being obsessed with Meghan and that she's a Divorced American. Whilst his Brother was a better King, he was taken too soon due to the Burden of Kingship thrust on him when all he wanted was the life of a Countryman with his Family for a good few years.
@@lalitthapa101 I don't find their story similar at all. Edward potentially could have caused the end of the monarchy with his decisions while Harry just choose to marry a commoner and leave the royal family. To be fair, the political and trade tensions between the countries were enough to have seen them go to war even if they'd both been republics. The UK had grown too powerful and its global dominance at sea too overwhelming for any other European power to flourish as it had; something had to give.
Edward and Wallis were both extremely selfish people. That, along with Edward’s poor life-choices and Nazi sympathies, would have made him a terrible monarch had he not abdicated. Good thing he did!

I find it very interesting that the Nazi sympathizer aspect of the romance was left out of popular accounts of the abdication. Even after the file that showed evidence of the Nazi plan to install Edward as a puppet king was made public, every time I heard about him and Wallis, it made them seem like perfect, star-crossed lovers.
It’s actually well known. I’ve watched over 20 documentaries on these two and surprisingly a majority of them mentions it. It’s even in that Netflix show the crown although it’s not historically accurate. Although there was one documentary which chose to defend him and say he wasn’t a nazis sympathizer but then again it was made and featured members of the current British royal family. So they could be trying to save their own ass

A tale of two brothers that never wanted to be king. One runs away from his responsibilities and is today considered an embarrassment and cautionary tale. The other, despite being fearful of the burdens of his position, steps up to take on the responsibilities and becomes hailed as one of the greatest kings his country ever had.
Most historians would not rate George VI that highly. He was a diffident, nervous man buttressed by his wife, whose ability to rally British resistance made Hitler call her the most dangerous woman in Europe. George smoked and worried himself to death. I'd rate him beta-plus- a constitutionalist, 'modern' sovereign who respected the new 20C democratic norms and did not meddle in politics or military strategy. Probably the optimal head of state for a country that needed unity in 1940-45 more than at most time; an inoffensive symbolic figure.
True but a decent man who stepped up when needed and felt totally ill equipped for the role. I think that is why he is admired… because of those limitations but he did his duty and so did his daughter-our wonderful Queen Elizabeth.

You forgot to mention how, when Edward was on his death bed, Wallis never even bothered to spend time with him despite him constantly calling out for her. When he was dying he saw her twice: the first night he was bed bound (three weeks before he died), and the night he died. Not how a woman who truly loves her husband would act. She jealously insulted George VI's wife, Queen Elizabeth (both of whom were busy supporting the British people and raising the country's morale during the war) by making fun of her body, and criticising how much she seemed to enjoy being queen (even though Elizabeth, like George VI, never wanted to become the monarch in the first place, but carried out her duties of supporting her husband and country anyway). A truly nasty, selfish woman. Nothing great or romantic about their "love" story at all (if it can even be called a love story). She shouldn't have been given the respect, dignity, or honour of being financially supported by Queen Elizabeth II and buried on royal ground, or of the Queen Mother attending her funeral. The royal family showed both David and Wallis more mercy than they deserved.
My grandfather was the main Parisian architect and he was commissioned to renovate their Paris flat. My mother remembers meeting them, a little group of pugs rushing around, Wallis, thin as a rail and snapping at Edward in front of other people, Edward with watery eyes looking so terribly sad.
The fact that she and her father suffered a lot of consequences from that irresponsible uncle made them faithful to their duties really shows what a beautiful soul she and her father had. It is such a great example for future generations.

I don't think money was really the most prominent component, she liked the attention and perceived distinction of a prince and later king being smitten with her. It was never meant to be more than superficial flirtation, I've watched a documentary in which they read from her letters to her ex husband. She realized she loved him and suddenly was stuck with Edward, she thought she couldn't get out of it anymore after he decided to abdicate for her.
I saw that Documentary. I had got the impression before that that she didn't really Love Edward and things were moving too fast and she was trapped. They were married for 36 years. I heard she wrote that she wasn't that sure she wanted to marry Edward, but she was 40 at the time and needed to follow her best options. Born neither beautiful nor rich, she was scrappy if nothing else. She was a survivor.
Wasn't she already married though? Maybe he was a better option, but it wasn't like he was her only option. Seems weird to divorce your husband and marry someone else if you're not even that interested in him in the first place.

I think what they were going for is that his name was Edward Albert Christian and then George Andrew Patrick David was added on for the patron saints of the 4 countries of Great Britain. They probably thought it was sweet and romantic for the name of the future king. A name and a king to bring all 4 nations together. Little did they know, eh?
I honestly think he wanted to abdicate all along, and made it seem like it was for her, so she'd never, ever be able to leave him. You can't exactly dump a man who literally gave up a country for you.
He’s such a child… and their relationship is so toxic. I thought they were like the fairytale relationship because he loved her more than the throne but that’s not all that there is and its so much worse. Wow.

Yes, and the very rolls royce that Wallis rode in during Edwards funny was the exact same car that H & MM rode in on their very last engagement as "working royals".
I always thought that the love story of Edward VIII and Wallis was a romantic one, but now I see what it truly was and why the British Royal family dislike them so much. Thank you!
I've noticed that siblings are often as opposite as they can possibly be. I think that it's unconsciously on purpose, to separate ourselves from each other, so people won't confuse us as much.
Queen Elizabeth II is an absolute class act. After everything Edward/David did to the family, she was able to forgive him, and further she was able to forgive Wallis. Consider that mold broken.
This was a wild ride. 🤣 “Wallis was heartbroken” to learn that her husband was having an affair…. As she was sleeping with Edward. I don’t care how much money or jewels someone is throwing at me, I’m not interested in anyone but my husband. Crazy how that works. 😂
Well, it wasn’t that she upset about him having an affair, because she sent the girl to “satisfy his needs” in her place. She just didn’t expect those two to fall in love. Which makes sense, her husband sent her to Edward to satisfy his needs and extort wealth from him, but Wallis never fell in love. So she’d expect her husband to feel the same (that is, use people but never love them). It just didn’t work like that.
There’s another documentary about some letters that Wallis wrote. It’s quite good- backs this one up. I sounds like Wallis’ great love was Mr. Simpson; she really messed up when she started the affair with David. She thought she was smart enough to carry it off and found out differently. She ended up with a man she didn’t love.
Yes, I’ve seen this one too & you can’t knock handwritten letters, they’re solid evidence of her true thoughts & feelings. The thing is, I think that she was so convinced that he would eventually move on to a younger model, as she had basically replaced his previous mistress. She believed it wasn’t that serious, because SHE wasn’t that serious about HIM. Like I’ll give the guy some attention & I’ll get jewels & vacations out of it, so let it ride out for as long as possible until that happens… the fact she was in tears over him having abdicated, when she had tried to tell him previously to not give up thrown for her & had tried to run away to France to avoid him, & that still didn’t work… THEN she realized how screwed she was & how obsessed he was with her & there was no getting out of it. I think as a result, the snappy, indignant behavior was like undertones of resentment; toward him & toward herself for not having dropped him earlier.
I can't imagine 2 people who deserved each other more. I had suspected most of this...having read between the lines before, and having met similar people...but this was pretty blunt. Wallace managed to both ruin her life and do the Royal family...and England, the most enormous favor. Both, which we now know, to be true...Pretending to love someone for advantages is pretty low...and apparently karma IS a b...ch.
Wow! This is far from the passionate, fairytale Romeo & Juliet (though they sucked too) romance I've heard people made their relationship out to be! Thanks for the authenticity, Lindsey.
Well, there's impotent & sterile. You can be sterile & not be impotent, but being impotent *generally* means you're *also* sterile. TBH I don't think David was either one of those; families believed what they wanted to believe about their 'black sheep'; Caroline of Ansbach *desperately* believed her son Frederick Lewis was impotent, despite all evidence to the contrary, b/c she hated him *that* much. Louis, duke of Orléans believed his son (the confusingly-named Louis-Philippe I, duke of Orléans) believed his son was incapable of fathering children, & refused to acknowledge any of his grandchildren as his own blood, despite the fact said grandchildren bore a pretty good family resemblance to their father. IMO 18th, 19th, & 20th Royals were pretty often stupid ppl. so take what they have to say about themselves w/ a grain of salt.
The fact that Britain would have been allies to Germany has always blown my mind, we would be living in an entirely different world if be hadnt abdicated. Everything happens for a reason it seema
You all overestimate the power that the royals had even at that time. They were just spokespeople really. The government made the decisions regarding war.
Omg can you imagine. We would have been speaking German. That's if we didnt fit in. There would be no Beyonce no. Michael Jackson. No black people in this country.
I always found it fitting that during WW2 the defeat of Nazis, who were obsessed with physical perfection, came at the hands of people who were physically flawed but had extraordinary moral strength. In the USA the President was wheelchair bound, would possibly have been sent to a concentration camp with other disabled people if he had been a citizen under Nazi occupation, but his disability gave him insights into the underprivileged and he is easily my most admired POTUS. In Britain they removed their physically handsome but selfishly amoral King for a King who was a shy stutterer who did his duty even though it led to his early death (he smoked to calm his nerves leading to lung cancer). That new King refused to leave London throughout the war so he could be with his people, even when Buckingham Palace was being hit with bombs. My grandparents lived in London throughout the war, my grandmother said this single act as well as seeing him tour bomb sites and comfort people contributed greatly to their determination to never surrender and never lose hope. Edward was sent to the Bahamas to stop him undermining the war effort or (worse case scenario) being installed as monarch if Hitler invaded.
She stayed with Edward to save him the ridicule and ruin her rejection would bring. It's clear she didn't want marriage. Edward craved recognition so the fawning they experienced in Germany appealed to him. He also hated the idea of another European war. His response to Hitler was formed by these two factors.
There are a lot of what ifs in history, but I think even if Edward did become king, (or married Wallis), the crown would still find its way to Elizabeth. Not only was Wallis unable to have children, but according to a biographer and testimony, Edward suffered a childhood illness that wasn't well treated, and the side effect rendered him impotent. So even if would be king, his reign still wouldn't have lasted that long, and Elizabeth would still end up being Queen. Now the outcome of WW2 would have been very different, if he did become King....
The very Rolls-Royce that Wallis rode in during Edwards funeral was the exact same car that H & MM rode in on their very last engagement as "working royals".

Despite the family drama that happened as a result of the abdication, I think the fact that the Queen allowed them to be buried next to one another speaks volumes. It's about respecting the love they had for each other. That's why I said "Good on her." It had nothing to do with how good or bad I think Wallis is.
I am glad you cleared this up. I have seen so many" had Edward VIII not abdicated, QEII would never have reigned. The crown may have bypassed King George VI( which would have been a loss- he & Queen Mum were just what the world needed), but QEII would have ( albeit later) gotten the crown.
She gave the Queen mum a look on a British Pathe Video unveiling Mary of Teck's plaque, the Queen mum didn't even look at her, walked straight past her!
I had gathered that the bloom fell off the rose of romance pretty quickly (for Wallis, at least, from some of her later comments), but I never knew that it was never really there to begin with! She really painted herself into a corner, almost an Anne Boleyn kind of figure...she didn't lose her head, but she did lose her life in a way. I am a distant cousin through my matrilineal line and her father's family. My 6x great grandfather was a Warfield, his own mother was a Sewell, both founding families of Baltimore. Despite him moving to the midwest in the 1830s, the families apparently stayed in touch until my own grandmother's mother and grandmother died (1946 and 1953 respectively). So, it was known to me as a child that I was somehow related to Wallis, but not the how. On New Year's Eve 2020 I got home from parties and for some reason to see how far I could trace my matrilineal line just by internet searching, and that's how far I got. My mom made the connection when she saw my little scrap of paper tracing us back with the names and dates.
I'm a little confused by the Church of England forbidding divorce. Didn't Henry the 8th formed the Church of England in order to do just that with his first wife? What changed?
The Church of England broke with Rome and allowed Henry VIII to declare his marriage to Catherine of Aragon invalid (because she was previously married to his brother). So on his view, he never DIVORCED Catherine (that is still not OK under Church of England), he was merely never properly married to her. He had previously petitioned the Catholic Church to make that declaration, but that didn't happen. In other words, the Church of England made Henry VIII the head of the church instead of the Pope in Rome, so he could declare his own marriage invalid. Hope my explanation makes sense :)
I wonder if parliament gave Edward the "Wallis or the throne" ultimatum in order to get rid of him. WWII was on the way and parliament knew Bertie, not Edward, was the king they needed. They couldn't fire him but they could force him to quit.
My favourite tale about the RF's name change was that when King George V heard that they'd been called 'insipid and alien'. The King's response was "I may be insipid, but I'll be damned if I'm alien."
She did not like Hitler lol she actually didn't like that she had to step out while "the men" spoke. She commented that she thinks Hitler doesn't like/respect women. King Edward was trapped but was emotionally neglected as a child thus becoming obsessed with the mother-like attention he got from Wallis. As far as the trip to Hitler. King Edward wanted to help with the war in some way and thinking the trip would help as well as give Wallis a royal experience. It all worked against him and they were cast off to the islands until eventually settling in France. Anywho... yeah she didn't like Hitler and he was needy and emotionally immature and ignorant of his lack of responsibility and accountability.

This video was my introduction to Lindsay and her channel. It's rare that I learn something on RUclips that explained events and the cast of characters as clearly and succinctly as Lindsay has. The Duke & Duchess were a comical looking couple to me in my teen's during the 60's. I knew the skimmed surface of their shenanigans. Later in the 1970's they were subjects of ridicule by Monty Python and other jokesters. Lindsay walked me through the entire scorecard so I now understand how King "Eddie" got to the point of writing is abdication letter. Such a deep dive wouldn't have been appreciated in the 1960's. "Higher" moral standards prevailed and it was not a time of "everything goes." It was starting in pockets but society in general would have found the Windsors' details distasteful.

His Abdication had a lot more Ramifications than Harry and Meghan, yes there are similarities with Harry being obsessed with Meghan and that she's a Divorced American. Most historians would not rate George VI that highly. He was a diffident, nervous man buttressed by his wife, whose ability to rally British resistance made Hitler call her the most dangerous woman in Europe.

This was THE most informative video on the subject. I've gotten bits and pieces from various places... But this shared so much. Well done!
It's a really good documentary, I recommend it to everyone who sees this!

Edward threatened with suicide. Simpson had another woman by that time.

I think it was very generous of Queen Elizabeth to continue to support Wallis after Edward’s death and to allow her to be buried in the royal vault.
How could David be "impotent" if he regularly kept mistresses, who his family feared he would impregnate, throughout his ENTIRE adult life?
He couldn't have kids because he caught a sickness that left him infertile

@@lalitthapa101 true. It wud have been a puppet state. And royalty would not be what it would.
Edward was sent to the Bahamas to stop him undermining the war effort or (worse case scenario) being installed as monarch if Hitler invaded.
i enjoyed reading your comment, it’s really insightful!

I recently saw a tv program called Royal wives at war. It tells the story of the queens mother and Wallis Simpson, it was pretty good.
Those two were like cats and dogs.
@Frances Grey, Duchess of Suffolk Hi Mother
The Queen Mother was alleged to have been in love with Prince David. THATS why she hated Wallis Simpson.
Wow, that’s fascinating!
Anybody with any sense knew by the middle 1930s that things were going to get bad in Europe, so they couldn't let Edward screw things up.
My favourite tale about the RF's name change was that when King George V heard that they'd been called 'insipid and alien'. The King's response was "I may be insipid, but I'll be damned if I'm alien."
Did he really say that? Hahaha
