Well, her own name probably never came up in that circle, since I assume they would all have been calling her 'my Queen' or 'your grace' or 'your majesty' (or some variation thereof). Mary's actual name (which she spelled Marie) would not have come up very often.
Every production about Queen Mary of Scots forgets that she had a FRENCH accent and not a Scottish one. For example, the romcom Reign, the movie Mary Queen of Scots (2018), etc.
She also just, *loved* France & her adoptive Valois family *way* more than she ever cared for Scotland or England. Her former brother-in-law Charles IX of France even stood as godfather to Mary's son James (well, *one* of the godfathers, there was more than one).

Mary was nothing but a beautiful pawn in the game of life. She should've known better than to think she could just walk right into Scotland and nothing would've changed.
I think as soon as she was sent to France, her fate was sealed. Scotland, from what I can read was a damn complicated political animal than those of France and England - there's a reason why her son, James, wanted to become King of England so badly - at least he knew that England was a bit bit easier to manage than the clusterfuck that was Scotland's political arena. Scotland requires someone astute and well versed with how all the many - MANY clans work in that country, a deft mind to handle the fickle and precarious nature of its nobility. Unfortunately for Mary, she was raised in France, which had a different method of ruling and a different type of culture. The fact that she chose *poorly* for her second husband and was forced into a shit marriage to Bothwell scuttled whatever chances she got. What frustrates me was that some of her choices were baffling - what made her think Elizabeth would be inclined to help her when Mary spent her time in Scotland claiming she was THE ONLY LEGITIMATE HEIR TO ENGLAND and called Elizabeth was an bastard usurper many times after. I was just - gurl, GURL please think. Who were your advisors?????
@@Nixconvie I love LOVE this comment because it goes to the absolute heart of the matter. Mary is to be pitied because she was raised for one life and purpose and her mother-in-law truly was awful to her, throwing her back to Scotland, a country she didn't even know or understand. The French court had been child-centric and she'd been loved and secure all of her years there, and she relied on her charm to win her way through life. She'd have been just fine if her beloved French husband had lived.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
It always made me super sad to think that Mary's son James never trusted or even spoke to her in person. Being ripped away from your baby and imprisoned only to have him mistrust you and leave you locked up.. that's cold.
For those who are saying that Mary had the last laugh, Elizabeth was well aware that her Tudor Lineage will end through her as she had no husband to have a child. Elizabeth also expected James to be her successor as after Mary’s execution, James was first in line for the throne. Elizabeth’s main goal was to enhance the Protestant Establishment of England and we know that through Mary’s son, James became King and was a Protestant. So clearly Elizabeth kinda did have the last laugh either way
I think Elizabeth was trying to not be killed primarily via poison her whole life. I think that's why she didn't marry and why she squashed plots that never happened. Also didn't want kids because childbirth was a frequent death sentence.
It depends if you think the long-game is blood-lineage or religion. In the case of the former, she won out, but only due to her loss on the later. She never got to raise James & as a result he was raised Calvinist (which for Mary was a deep cut). James' Protestantism made him an acceptable successor to Elizabeth('s ministers). A position he was so eager to attain that he let Mary be extra-legally executed w/out raising much of a fuss. Not that Mary did much to earn any better, frankly. She was a woman in a tough position but she never learned to play it very well.
I feel like her downfall was a combination of naïveté and rich life of becoming a queen at 6 days old and living in a French court where she had everything provided for as well as being so focused on claiming England. She returned to a country that didn’t know her and didn’t like her. But instead of focusing on them, she set her sights on England which caused her to marry Darnley to make the English claim even stronger. I think she had the potential to be a good if not great Queen had she focused on Scotland.... but her marriage essentially torpedoed any chance of English and even her own Scottish throne.
I wonder if anyone, male or female ,could have overcome the Lords of the Congregation. I often wonder, if Elizabeth and Mary’s positions were reversed, could Elizabeth have negotiated with the Lords?
@@gloriamontgomery6900 If she had the same life that she did before becoming Queen of England, yes, I think she could. Unlike Mary, Elizabeth got a crash course in reality, betrayal, independence and negotiation practically from birth. Mary had it rough too, but seemed to always have a cushion to support her and/or never had the opportunity to learn from her mistakes herself directly until it was too late.
Through Lord Darnley, there was a claim to the English throne. He was the son of Margret Douglas; she was the daughter of Margret Tudor Queen of Scotland. Margret Tudor was the daughter of Henry VII of England. Her marriage to Darnley didn't torpedoed any change of English or her own Scottish throne. What torpedoed her Scottish throne was the forced third marriage to the Earl of Bothwell. Mary was forced to abdicate in favor of her infant son James.

@@amoriaiskawaii1906 I can understand that. Ever since I started tracing my family tree all I want to do is learn about where my ancestors came from and the history behind them and the country of origin.
I'm not sure how 'French' a 16th Century French accent would sound, however. Henry himself signed his name as "Henry" rather than the modern French "Henri" & his father Francis spelled his name completely differently from the modern French *or* English spelling (English: Francis; Modern French: François; Middle French: *Francoys*). Metropolitan French accent is the product of the language reforms implemented by the Bourbon monarchs (& I'm sure Napoleon had 'more than one finger in the game' to use a Danish expression). The Valois lived b/f any of these, so how their 'Parisian' French sounded could be anybody's guess (I'm sure an actual French linguist knows, but I don't). I know in earlier Medieval French a lot of the letters that are presently silent were then fully voiced & pronounced. Plus, while contractions did exist, they weren't noted w/ an apostrophe (causing no end of confusion to later readers).
If you look deeper into the life of Mary, some of your assertions are inaccurate. Mary never ‘fell in love’ she was brutally raped by Bothwell and forced against her will to marry him because of his quest for power. Her half brother was primarily responsible for plotting the murder of Darnley she had no part in this. Dr Kate Williams book, is an excellent source of more accurate information about Mary and her tragic life.

The two had never met in person within his living memory, so James had no reason to think fondly on his mother. His lack-of-wit was due to other factors (his belief in his absolute authority despite the fact his Calvinist tutors tried to instill in him *very* early on that he had a duty to his ppl. not just to God; his belief that he was smarter than he really was; his promotion of men to government solely based on his (alleged) attraction to them; his drinking, his substantial personal debt, etc.) I mean, his argument in Counterblast to Tabaco basically begins by saying 'yeah, the American Indians use this stuff, & *they're* savage & barbaric, so it must be dumb.' I have just watched the last few seasons of Reign about Mary and her rule and the French court. Although it had beautiful young people acting in the roles, it was not entirely true but did include actual events. It fudged a lot. But it made me want to learn more about Mary Queen of Scots and the french court at that time. This video helps put some of the events into an order.
The reason Elizabeth never wanted to see Mary was because she was intensely jealous of her. Mary was exceedingly more beautiful and her claim to the English throne was actually stronger than Elizabeth’s. Unlike Mary, Elizabeth was pockmarked all over with smallpox scars hence she started wearing white lead-based makeup to cover it up.
Elizabeth's jealously over Mary's beauty was very apparent. More so that Elizabeth used her power to eventually destroy Mary. This is the ultimate sign of weakness being driven by envy. Elizabeth lived a life riddled with guilt after Mary's execution. Even if Mary never was claimed the English throne, history has accorded her story as one of great interest in ruling monarch's.
Yeah, couldn't have anything to do with Mary calling Elizabeth a bast*ard for years, laying claim to her throne before her or ceaselessly and tirelessly plotting against her. 🤦🏾♀️ No, Elizabeth saw her for the enemy and threat she was and treated her accordingly.

Also Elizabeth had always believed that executing Mary would lead to bigger problems, such as an international backlash, which is why she held off executing her for so long. When Mary was found guilty of treason, Elizabeth hesitated to sign her death warrant. When she eventually did sign, she refused to submit it, but her secretary secretly took it. When Elizabeth found out, she was furious and he was put in the Tower for 18 months. Elizabeth wrote to King James apologising for the death of his mother, Mary.
@@godwilldovan That was about the only decent thing that Elizabeth did. At least she apologized to my 11th great grandfather for the death of my 12th great grandmother. @@maryqueenofscots3088 No, you didn't. You led a very privileged life from the moment you were born, but squandered it through egotism, immaturity and arrogance. I don't think so. Mary was never very well-liked in Scotland, & she was even less liked in England (the feeling was mutual in both cases). Scotland was already Calvinist by the time she returned as an adult for her personal rule, & this set off alarm bells almost immediately; there was always the chance Mary could institute a counter-Reformation like Mary I of England did. Mary also had no direct experience of government, either. Her reign in Scotland was mostly a non-event punctuated by stupid decisions Mary made to dig herself deeper. Anyone could have told her Darnley would have made a bad husband, but she didn't listen. When she finally learned that herself, she needed to ditch him, & murder was her chosen solution. But that still left the Queen a murder. To make matters worse, the marries one of the guys assumed to be a co-conspirator *in* said murder. Darnley probably deserved it, but there were better & smarter ways of getting rid of him than the one she chose, & she was already on thin-ice due to being a Catholic anyway. Long story short she was run out of the kingdom & for the most part the Scots were happier for it; since the declaration of Arbroath they reserved the right to replace their king if they didn't like him, so there was nothing technically illegal going on regarding her deposition anyway. Elizabeth executing her extralegally was a non-event in Scotland, since they already had a new monarch by then anyway, & James (being a Protestant male descended from Henry VII) was willing to let the murder of his mother slide if it meant becoming King of England (which worked out pretty well for him). Sure, *Catholics* were unhappy w/ how Mary was treated, but most Protestants in both kingdoms couldn't care less.
I think I was not as memorable and as well-liked by the people like Diana used to be. I know I have done some mistakes before, but those were incomparable to Diana's good deeds.
Thank you so much for this video! I recently finished a wonderful book about Mary Queen of Scots, and this cleared some things up. Before I very much disliked Elizabeth, only because she killed Mary. But now that I know what really happened, I feel much better about her.
It's stories like this and all the other troubles it has caused in the past that remind me why I am not religious and don't like organised religion. All of this bloodshed and drama caused by conflicts over religion.
I myself am Jewish. The form of Judaism I follow actually advocates for separation of religion and state and allowing everyone to live in peace. Meaning we leave each other alone.
@@brettlarch8050 But if everyone is religious & also, *coincidentally* violent, then how can you tell the religion & violence are not merely correlated, & not causated? I'm an atheist, but I have a feeling that we'd find just as many horribly violent ways to murder & torture ppl. as religious ppl. did if the need arose. Edward Longshanks, Philip IV of France, & the Catholic monarchs did horribly idiotic & terrible things to their Jewish populations (actions I do not condone, & indeed find reprehensible in every case). But Philip IV did it for money, Edward Longshanks did it for the political prestige &... well, I don't know enough about Castile & Aragon to speak about Ferdinand & Isabella, so I'll just leave it at that. Did Christianity's hatred of Judaism make these actions *easier* (in that they were more easy to justify & more acceptable to the political elite of those places)? I think so. But you also have Christian leaders tolerating Jews in this period as well; it's Puritanical Oliver Cromwell who invites the Jews back to England. & Polish King Casimir III strictly forbid anyone from attacking Poland's Jews during his reign. Not to mention that you have Christians murdering Jews while on the way to the Crusades & Christian Bishops trying to *protect* those same people & prevent the violence. It's a lot more complicated than just religion=bad.
Just to clarify I am a queere woman and I used to be and was raised Christian and yes there have been conflicts not caused by religion in the past and they were awful but I am not just talking about wars. Conversion therapy, royal succession crises, the damn holocaust, the salem witch trials, the gunpowder plot. Queen Elizabeth I: Signs Mary's death warrant *Mary's executed* Queen Elizabeth I: How dare they? THE DISRESPECT THE GALL THE NERVE THE AUDACITY 😤 I shall imprison them for carrying out my orders
Yeah...that wasn't Elizabeth actually being shocked though. She did that whole bit on purpose. She knew it would get used once she signed it, but she must have felt like they had her over a barrell: she had come to be convinced she had to execute Mary, but none of her old worries about the consequences had gone away. She signed it, then told her secretary not to use it specifically so that, when he did, as she knew he would, she could claim innocence and lay the whole thing at her councilors feet. Most of them were shocked and hurt as she signed the damn thing, what did she think that meant would happen? But William Cecil knew her better. In letters he tells acquaintances that he privately called her out on it.
Honestly I think if they met and had the chance to get to know each other and all the ramblings of the threats other people spoke to them I feel like they could of been super powerful and prosperous allies. They both had so many people trying to control them and force them to submit that if they came together they would of been unstoppable.

I just love the story of Mary Queen of Scots. Such an intriguing story, where she had everything, and was Queen of France as a teenager with her whole life ahead of her. She then progressively lost everything bit by bit, always trying to recapture her former blessed life, until she lost her head at the end of a cold war between herself and her cousin Elizabeth who had no children and ended the Tudor dynasty. If she knew today, that she and not Elizabeth was the direct ancestor of not only the British King, (Scotland and England to her) but all the European monarchs in Europe, she would be smiling.
In reading so many comments, it amazes me at the amount of vitriol thrown in Elizabeth's direction. One needs to consider the amount of religious upheaval going on at this time, thanks in large part to Scotland's relationship with England. Mary managed to alienate most of her most powerful lords - she was just not up to the task of pitting one against the other and keeping them guessing. Most of this can be a result of her pampered upbringing in France - Elizabeth had no such cherishing. Then add in her poor skills at reading men and picking the absolute worst choice of a husband in Darnley. I always felt badly for her, but she was not prepared for the world - and the reality - she found in Scotland.
She never named an heir the English government chose James as he was her nearest relative though by the terms of Henry VIIIs will he was excluded but he was male and the next 2 closest in line were not and the sexist ministers of Elizabeth didn't want another female ruler

It always made me super sad to think that Mary's son James never trusted or even spoke to her in person. Being ripped away from your baby and imprisoned only to have him mistrust you and leave you locked up.. that's cold.
Yeah😔
Oh yes. Very sad. No doubt he was manipulated by those ruthless Protestant Scottish lords.
Agreed very toxic times
Outside of war I doubt he could’ve done anything
I mean she may or may not have killed his father too, so there’s that lol
For those who are saying that Mary had the last laugh, Elizabeth was well aware that her Tudor Lineage will end through her as she had no husband to have a child. Elizabeth also expected James to be her successor as after Mary’s execution, James was first in line for the throne. Elizabeth’s main goal was to enhance the Protestant Establishment of England and we know that through Mary’s son, James became King and was a Protestant. So clearly Elizabeth kinda did have the last laugh either way
Yeah and I think it was also a way for her to appease her guilt over killing Mary.
I think Elizabeth was trying to not be killed primarily via poison her whole life. I think that's why she didn't marry and why she squashed plots that never happened. Also didn't want kids because childbirth was a frequent death sentence.
Also James was technically a Tudor since he was a descendant of Henry VII, so Tudors were technically still on the throne
@Elisabeth Schmerzler no, he wasn't a Tudor at all. His father was a Stuart and dynasties are paternal.

True.

@@Hello-yq8kk I swear I didn't even read it. Lol

What does being a subject mean? Didnt she plot to get the english crown?
Nothing but the truth here
@@gloriamontgomery6900 If she had the same life that she did before becoming Queen of England, yes, I think she could.

I actually like the fact that Lindsay is pronouncing 'Henry II of France' in a French accent
Yeah it’s nice.

The two had never met in person within his living memory, so James had no reason to think fondly on his mother. I have just watched the last few seasons of Reign about Mary and her rule and the French court.

Hi great grandma!!!
@@harharharharharharharharha240
Yet there’s been more violence in the name of religion if you read the statistics.
So much hypocrisy too. How many people wanted freedom to worship as they pleased then denied other people the same rights.
I'd love to see a Catherine of Valois biography in this series!

@@pedanticradiator1491 It was if Mary married Robert Dudley
History tea time is 100% the right name for this channel.
I’m really sorry for messing with your family Mary!
Yep.
I forgive you somehow.
@@maryqueenofscots6594 Thank u

I’ve been waiting so long for this one! Thank you for saying our appetite for the Stuart Scottish Queen! 👑💖
Mary's hair/wig in the thumbnail photo look so beautiful 👀
It certainly does.

Catherine is my idol!!
@@maryqueenofscots3088 of course! Your grace.. you have been trained by the Catherine de Medici
Fun Fact: My best friend is a direct descendant of Scottish King Robert the Bruce. Knowing that I'm connected to the Scottish royals, including Mary Queen of Scots, like that is very cool!
Fun Fact: Lord Bothwell's ghost is supposed to haunt the dungeon at Dragsholm Castle, where he died.
Oh Hallelujah!!! Finally! Mary Queen of Scots. Oh thanks Lindsay!
Thanks for the upload!
Well one Queen had to end up Victorious!
You!
How does it feel seeing a video about your arch rival?
Hi Elizabeth!
Sup twin 🙃
@@lollipop96537 Hello disguised daugher
I found out yesterday through genealogy that im a first cousin 14x removed of mary queen of scots.I've always been fascinated with her story and the tudors!
LOL!!!! You are copying my Wife. Her Mother is first cousin 14x removed as well. It's documented. So kind of weird.
@@jeffreyvillegas1288 guess your wife and I are distant cousins then :p
I love your videos! Thankyou so much for everything you do to bring us these wonderful lives.
"My Heart is My Own" by Prof. John Guy (2004) is a must-read to understand the crux of Elizabethan politics shaped by the existence of Mary- Queen of Scots. The book investigated her whole story, digging deeper into archival documents (spread across 4 countries), which no historian had worked systematically since the 1890s.
Not just a martyr but a fully realized tragic heroine!🏴👑
The book's title is "MY HEART IS MY OWN," and can be read or purchased at the Internet Open Library.
Oh my I love these portraits ...and the detail in the story I know the movie "Reign" was inaccurate but I feel in love with acting of Mary but I wish she would have had a French accent ...LOL
I have always felt bad about Queen Mary. I know she was not completely innocent in her motives but I do feel that for the most part she was a victim of the circumstances around her.
Yes, I had so much I could’ve offered to the world if only my cousin Elizabeth and I could’ve lived peacefully with me as heir presumptive 🙄
@@maryqueenofscots3088 Mary I must say, lovedddd your style dear! It had a je ne sais quoi so missing from this era. I so agree about your cousin, she was a bit of a snooty old gal wasn’t she?
@@AdrienTalksMachines I could really go on and on!! She wasn’t fooling anyone with the whole “virgin queen” act🙄
Its pretty cute that lindsay changed her name
And I like it ❤
Edit:Ok guys,I just saw her merch AND ITS FREAKIN AWESOME.LOVE IT❤❤
I watch your videos for my lunch break at work and I love them! big fan of British (and Roman) history. Thank you Lindsay!
15:15 that portrait looks so realistic 😳
Fun fact: when the executioner first strike and missed, Mary fell onto the ground and was said to have whispered, "Sweet Jesus". Those were her last words.
Thank you so much, Lindsey!
Her name is Lindsay you fool!
Oh god it’s get heated in the Mary fandom
Thank you Miss Lindsey!!! This is fave is by far. Please keep it up and educate the ( English Speaking) world. I find your presentations lovely.💕
Your videos are amazing! I really enjoy all of them! Thanks for such great content!
This might be the smoothest transition to advertisement I’ve ever seen! 😂
That said, this is truly fascinating! I’m glad I stumbled upon your channel.
Bravo, wonderfully produced video. Informative and entertaining. Good job Lindsay.
"I don't know! I can't keep track of any of it anymore! I just keep teaming up with whoever suggests it!"
- Mary Stuart
Lol 🤣
"Hey! You know that lady who's entire life prepared her to successfully walk the impossible tightrope of English politics and foreign policy while keeping relative peace and prosperity? You should totally replace her with ME! I'VE got this."
-Ummm...also Mary Stuart
funnily enough, James's prediction became true, not through Mary, but through Anne over a century later, as she was the last of the Stuarts and the one who signed the England and Scotland union.
In Holyrood palace, there's a lock of hair that belonged to her in a heart pendant... Amazing I think
Man, it kind of seems like a dick move to not only deny her request to be buried in France (which I get, I'm sure it may have been too expensive considering she was convicted of treason), but to then give her a Protestant funeral when she was Catholic to the end!!! Thats just cruel
This is what I've been waiting for. Thank you Lindsay!
speaking as a Doctor of British history (Aberdeen, UK 2012), who taught "Renaissance and Reformations", I must say my dear that you did a fabulous job with this video. Well done!
I’m currently reading A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley, which is a time travel novel featuring Mary, Queen of Scots and the Babington Plot. Would highly recommend! 👌🏻
I love time travel novels, thanks for the recommendation!
I love myself so I might tune in❤️
One of my favourite books.
Poor Mary the ill fated queen got the last laugh though as her genes lived on into the royal houses of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Spain & the UK.
She is one of my family members. Lol I am obsessed with history. Very fascinating lady!
Poor Mary, much of her life and reign was caught up in one big royal rivalry... And just to top it all of, gone was her head!
I enjoyed watching very much, you do a wonderful job presenting these. 👍❤
Would you consider uploading your wonderful informative projects to Spotify? Would love to hear your stories but also be able to close the app while continuing to listen! (Yes I know RUclips premium has this option but… you know). Love your content! Love from the Netherlands.
I second this❤️
And yes I would still listen to them on RUclips a lot because I love to see the pictures. It would just be so nice for falling asleep to the stories in the evening.
Mary queen of scots was absolutely amazing and very interesting. Great video by the way
