Born a princess, Mary was declared a bastard by her father when he divorced her mother in his desperate attempts to father a male heir. She fought her whole life for her position. When her brother died he passed her over and named their cousin Queen instead. But the people supported Mary, she rode to London and had her usurper beheaded. Now the first unquestioned Queen of England, she undid her father and brother’s work to convert the nation from catholicism. She burnt protestants at the stake and earned the name Bloody Mary. Desperate for a child, she made an unpopular marriage with a man who didn’t care for her and suffered two humiliating false pregnancies. She died at 42 passing the throne to her sister who overshadowed her for the rest of history.

On the one hand we shouldn't endorse burning people at the stake for having a slightly different opinion with you. But on the other hand considering how much Henry and his inner circle put her and her mother through, I think it's a miracle she didn't turn out worse than she did.

History calls Mary I, "Bloody Mary," and one of the most evil queens to exist, but I don't think Mary was evil. I think Mary became the way she was because of her father.
She went from being the apple of her parents' eyes to being shunned, rejected, psychologically & verbally abused and isolated from anyone who would've shown her love and affection. Katherine of Aragon and Margaret Pole are the only two people who ever showed unconditional love to Mary, and Henry purposely kept her away from them to make them all suffer. Not to mention that he didn't even try to protect his daughter when Anne Boleyn fell into the "wicked stepmother" trope. If anything, Henry further encouraged it. That would give anyone serious daddy issues, and it showed in how desperate she was to find love in her adult life when she married Phillip. He was her husband, and even he couldn't give her the love she needed and was searching for because he felt nothing for her.
Furthermore, I think there was much more motive for Mary to return England to Catholicism than just her belief that it was the true religion. I think Mary held the church so dear to her because, if you think about it, Catholicism gave her what the people in her life didn't. The church didn't abandon her. The Pope openly spoke of support for her & Katherine during the divorce, plus it was a connection to her mother. Katherine was extremely pious and passed that onto her daughter, so I think that made the religion even more special to Mary.
I just hope now that her spirit has found the peace that she didn't get in life. With her mother. RIP to them both ❤

All things considered, I think Elizabeth was a good sister to Mary. I feel like all the imprisonment Mary gave Elizabeth was more due to paranoia from Mary's court than actual distain towards Elizabeth. Mary wouldn't name Elizabeth her heir and Elizabeth wouldn't have thrown an elaborate funeral for Mary if the sisters were not in good terms.
Mary did begged to buried next to catherine though elizabeth mocked her request. Though elizabeth had no intention of meeting her again when james moved her remains, ironically james ended like mary when he was buried under henry ( mary father who divorced catherine though mary still enjoy a better grave compared to henry😅
I always find it interesting that Mary I never tried to blame Henry VIII and always blamed Anne Boleyn. It’s seems she was convinced that Henry was naive when in reality he knew what he was doing
I think she was always trying to get her father’s love that she had during her childhood back so she couldn’t even conceive of blaming him for her pain. She had a perfect villains in Anne and Cranmer.

Elizabeth never spoke of her mother, but supposedly kept her iconic B pearls on her person. Plus the never marrying bit would indicate her father made her distrust men. But never a negative word about him passed her lips lest she be looked down upon the people she had to convince she had royal control over.
Mary was the biggest daddies girl. Anne wasn't fully to blame for her parents divorce. He was gonna divorce Cathrine sooner or later anyways.
I think the only reason she blamed Anne was because she COULD blame Anne. Ecspeailly after her death.
Critisising the King wasn't the smartest idea. She was almost killed by her father and just barely let back into his good graces.
After she became queen however, it became more evident that she haboured resentment against him. In her will, she paid for prayers to be said for her, her mother, and several of her ansestors. Henry was noticeably absent from the list.
You must remember that Henry VIII was a staunch proponent of the Catholic Church right until they wouldn’t grant him his political divorce.
Had Mary not gone through the trauma in her early life. And had her father just named her his heir. She probably would have been one of England’s greatest monarchs
I always think about if Henry and Catherine’s first child (a son) actually lived to adulthood and succeeded his father. That would’ve changed history entirely.
Also, it makes you sympathize with Mary due to what she experienced. Because of her father’s obsession with wanting a son, and misogyny, she witnessed the annulment of her parents marriage and her mother’s isolation from court. Also, her stepmother, based on the video, didn’t make it any better and watched her sister receive more love from their father than she.
I mean of course we'll never know who would be monarch today if that child, Prince Henry would have had offspring to succeed him.
What I wonder though is what if the son lived to adulthood but had no children to carry on? In that scenario King Henry and Queen Catherine would have likely never divorced and England may still be Catholic today. Maybe Mary would still succeed then (assuming she'd survive her brother) but her succession would not have been as controversial.
@@Hendrik_McSims that’s a good point, especially putting emphasis on a Catholic England. If that was the case, England could’ve possibly been united with Spain if Mary was still engaged to and married to Phillip and if they were to have children of their own.
But if their son would’ve lived, and have children who also produced a longer line, the Tudor Dynasty gone on longer than it did and the sequence that we have up to today wouldn’t have happened the way it did.
But as you said, we would never know but it makes you think for sure.

Margaret Pole wasn’t executed just because she refused to swear the Oath of Supremacy, and her execution also occurred years after Catherine’s death and Anne’s execution. In fact, Henry was married to his fifth wife, Catherine Howard when Margaret was executed. Margaret’s execution had more to do with her son, Reginald Pole, who had become a cardinal (and would later serve as Mary’s Archbishop of Canterbury) and his continued opposition to Henry’s religious reforms. Reginald was abroad, so Henry couldn’t go after him directly, so instead he had Margaret, her two other sons, Henry, Baron Montagu and Geoffrey, along with Henry Courtenay, Marquess of Exeter, another royal cousin, implicated in a conspiracy against him.

Cancer can be genetic a lot of the time. But if I'm not mistaken, Catherine had breast cancer. And Mary's was likely uterine cancer, as in one of her phantom pregnancies her belly expanded in what was likely a tumor.

Elizabeth, her sister, took no pleasure in executions and often didn't have a choice since many people threatened her reign. However, Mary killing Prostestants and hurting them because of their religion was bad. In a way, Mary I was both a villain and a victim.
Queen Elizabeth I ordered far more harsher sentences and executed far more people than what Queen Mary I did.
@lilpenny1982 I did some research and Mary killed more people than Elizabeth. For Mary, sources debate between 284 and 300. For Elizabeth, it was less than 200. She was also more moderate than Mary.
She also killed more people in a shorter amount of time, and she killed ordinary people rather than prominent church leaders or evangelists. Henry and Elizabeth were also able to plead, “They’re against me politically,” which Mary did not.
I hope her reputation gets restored- in addition to all you said here, John Fox’s book of martyrs serves as the main source for the numbers of Protestants burned, and he was a part of the anti-Catholic propaganda Elizabeth and her successors utilised, partially to blacken Mary’s reputation, and his book is known to have errors. Looking at diaries from people living in England at the time, the number is lower (I haven’t finished all the diaries yet and still have to compare the informations each have, but generally the number is much lower than that given by Fox.

It’s like believing Thomas More’s historical works with no further evidence to back up what he says- I love More, but he was a Tudor propagandist and, unfortunately, a bad Historian- the many known errors in his work mean we need more than his word to believed what he wrote, and the same applies to Fox.
@@lfgifu296 I would doubt things that Fox wrote if the Catholics presented evidence that it didn’t happen. Nicholas Sandys wrote a refutation of Fox, but considering his description of Anne Boleyn as a dead ringer for Nanny McPhee I wouldn’t say everything Sandys said actually happened. The notion of history as approaching the evidence as if from space really only goes back to Von Ranke.
@@CanadianMonarchist Oh, yes, Sandys was as bad a source as Fox was- two opposite ends of the same stick-, and we can’t take what he says as true unless it matches what we know to be true, but from the diaries I read, written at the time Mary was Queen, and some even by Protestants, the numbers are little more than half of what Fox claims

Mary was undoubtedly as much of a victim as she was a perpetrator, because how do you honestly go from being a favourite daughter to being cast aside like a piece of trash? Even her gripe with the new protestant faith of the land is veritably rooted in trauma. This isn't me trying to excuse the cruelties that Mary exacted on her political opponents but in an age where the king's word was law, fear was a powerful tool of the monarchs of old. Also not to excuse the poor behaviour of Henry VIII either, but if there was one thing that he did right was to instill a love of music and dance and arts in his children, and I'd posit that without that abundance of courtly music and dance and art that England and the UK would have wound up completely different to how it is today.

I think Queen Mary I was just painted by the Elizabethans as the villain queen.
In a way, Mary was very headstrong and really clawed her way to the top. It's just sad what happened to her and Queen Catherine with Henry VIII's obsession. Had her older brother been alive to succeed VIII, things would have turned differently.
By the way, if i were Mary, i would have sent men to get a male baby that is unwanted and raise him as her own.

Thank you for your efforts. Had Katherine stepped aside, yes Mary may have remained in the line of succession but would have been bumped down with every other child born. This is what Katharine was trying to avoid and wanted to allow her daughter her birth right. Anne wasn’t beheaded just because she didn’t give Henry a son but also because she behaved inappropriately as a queen which was ok as a mistress but not as Queen. She publicly challenged the king and said inappropriate things to others. Still not a justification for her harsh end but the issue is more complex than simply not producing a son. According to records and contemporary evidence of conversations, Henry did send men to persuade Mary to sign, however he certainly did not instruct them to beat her to death! This is in reference to a comment made by one of his men who indicated how he would deal with her himself had she been his daughter. Mary was not called Bloody Mary during her reign but in Elizabeth’s, mainly thanks to John Fox’s The Actes and Monuments. It appears that Elizabeth’s lavish spending on Mary’s funeral was more of a show for herself to look good since she did honor the one thing Mary asked, to be buried with her mother. Not only this but Elizabeth has herself buried above Mary in her tomb in the Lady Chapel with her own effigy, barely acknowledging that Mary is there
poor mary she truly deserved better, i do think that history has disturbed her image a little bit. People forget that her sister Elizabeth also did a lot of pretty questionable stuff, but mary is the only one that gets the shit for it.

Elizabeth had one of the most tolerant religious policies of the time. Elizabeth generally only executed people who directly threatened her reign and life by rebelling. She also didn’t burn people alive. She executed about 4 people a year, Mary executed about 58

People often say Elizabeth was tolerant and did not kill Catholics for being Catholic but for being traitors.
But the point is that she had made the pratice of Catholicism an act of high treason. Catholic masses were forbidden and a priest who celebrated one could be sentenced to death because of that.
Elizabeth was in no way tolerant. She simply called her victims «traitors» instead of calling them «heretics».
@@libiusperseus actually, the supremacy act of 1558 repealed Mary’s heresy laws and made it so that only directly violating Scripture could be considered heresy. Under Elizabethan law, as long as you attended service on the appointed days, you could practise whatever version of Christianity you wanted behind closed doors.
Elizabeth only executed those who rose against her in rebellion and those people fully knew that would be their fate when they rose up. Because no shit. That’s how feudalism works. She executed around 180 people throughout her 44 year reign. I’m sure you can do the math and realise that makes 4 people a year. Mary executed around 287 in 5 years, including 30 who died in prison. That’s just over 63 people per year.

You cannot practice Catholicism «behind close doors». The mass is the heart of Catholic life. Elizabeth had forbidden it. Attending a Catholic mass was punishable by a fine of one hundred marks. Celebrating or organizing the celebration of a Catholic mass was punishable by death.
And, yes, Elizabeth had imposed to attend to Anglican services.
In other words, Elizabeth tolerated Catholics... as long as they practiced Anglicanism and did not practice Catholicism. This is not tolerance at all.
There were some tolerant rulers at this time. Mary Queen of Scots was tolerant. Catherine de Medici and her sons were tolerant. Elizabeth was not.
Also, I notice that, when you counted Elizabeth's victims, you did not take into account the bloodshed in Ireland.
I appreciate that your writing focuses on the historic figures as making the best decisions they can as people, especially in regards to each other. Aside from one book (nostalgia for how I first learned about Elizabeth I), I find the more reliable history books are very fair to each figure and not trying to unnecessarily villainize anyone. There was a kid's Princesses book in particular that did it super well where the chapter began with Mary I and ended with Elizabeth I (and well celebrating the feats and strength of both!)

I imagine the common people might also have preferred Mary over Jane because she had much better international connections (being related to many royal houses through her mother).
I think the most fair metric to measure just how "bloody" Mary was in comparison to other rulers is to go off the same time frame. How many people did Henry execute in his first five years? Elizabeth? Hell, lets throw in her little brother Edward for giggles. And there's also the matter of circumstances. Mary came to the throne in a MESS of a situation, and public executions were what a monarch DID in these circumstances.
All things considered, I doubt Mary was any better or worse a monarch than any of her contemporaries. All Kings Are Bastards.

Great and thorough vid. As far as relations go, I think women can understand it much easier. I get so confused as to who was related to whom and how. I remember both Elizabeth movies, starring fantastic Kate Blanchette, sorry but I liked them both, but couldn't keep track. Sorry it is not your lack of explanation, but maybe when I watch it a second time, I will catch on. Good think you didn't throw in Mary Queen of Scots, that would have been too much, I still don't understand why she thought she was queen.

I’m surprised that Elizabeth didn’t bury her sister next to her mother Catherine, which was her final request. I know they didn’t get along very well but you think that Elizabeth could have given her sister at least that.

If you are going through all the major Queens of the UK I am so waiting for Queen Anne because like Mary, her historical legacy is not that nice but is also not all fully true. Anne is known for being the fat, old, sickly, lesbian queen who let the men in her court walk all over her and run her country for her but actually she was a very good queen. she fought off several foreign invasions, was the monarch who actually united the UK under the Acts Of Union making it what it is today and she was a very astute and competent military strategist. I am hugely anti monarchist but lets give Anne her moment in the sun. Justice of Queen Anne. her actual story deserves to be told.
Honestly, she didn't do anything different than other protestants when they were in power, and burning catholics at the stake. It was the time where religious prosecution was the way, and anytime a monarch with a different religion came to power, they would prosecute those with different beliefs. And this lasted for more than a century, all the way to the Stuarts.
If only Catherine had agreed to retire to a covent. She would have likely had a generous pension and right to see her daughter. Mary would still be legitimate, and probably would be married and have children, not wasting her fertile years.

Mary's reign had a few notable parallels with Henry's, namely how they both executed people for religious reasons and how they both struggled to conceive an heir. I don't condone Mary's actions, but it is important to recognize that she was the product of Henry's narcissism. Being separated from her mother, watching her father prioritize an unborn son over her and Elizabeth, enduring normalized misogyny and mistreatment for years. It makes sense that her upbringing resulted in her becoming the woman that she became. Plus, history has a overarching tendency to blame all faults on women, so the misogyny point still stands. All in all, Mary's legacy is a product of her being -- for lack of a better word -- misunderstood.

I thought that Catherine didn't want to give up her position because it would give up Mary's position. I don't know why you said Mary would still have been legitimate. Also what makes you say she wasn't actually devout? No one knows her actual thoughts and feelings on religion. The passage Henry obsessed over doesn’t say that you should not marry your brother’s widow.
“If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity; he has dishonored his brother. They will be childless.”

It means that you should not sleep with your brother’s wife while he is still living. There are many other biblical verses that state that a man should marry his brother’s widow.
Deuteronomy 25:5 (ESV)
“ If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.”

Yep. Everything I've read says that the baby's cause of death is unknown. Miss Holiday might've been confused. There WAS a prince Henry, the son of King James I and Anne of Denmark, who DID die of an intestinal malady.🤔
