If you google “Princess Charlotte of Wales” you will be greeted by pictures of William and Catherine’s adorable daughter, born in 2015. But there was another Princess Charlotte of Wales, born over 200 years earlier who had a much different life. She endured the neglect of parents who hated each other and the abuse of a father who saw her as competition. She grew up resilient and brash. After dragging several young men along, she escaped into a happy love match with a dashing German Prince. They were every bit as popular as the currant Prince and Princess of Wales. As the inevitable heir to the throne, Charlotte embodied Britain’s hope for the future and the birth of her first child was feverishly anticipated. But horribly managed medical care caused her to died in childbirth at the age of 21. Her tragic death was mourned by the nation just as deeply as Princess Diana’s. The race to sire a new heir produced the future Queen Victoria. So every British royal since, including the young Princess Charlotte would not have existed were it not for the sorry fate of the original Princess Charlotte of Wales. Let’s meet her.

She was hardly an injured innocent.
They both sucked, but it was especially cruel of her father to keep her from her mother.
They both were miserable people who married each other out of financial and familial obligation, Charlotte, and ultimately Leopold and their stillborn son, were the only unfortunate parties in this story.
This princess shaped the entire course of history, if Charlotte had lived she would have been Queen Charlotte I of the United Kingdom and her husband Leopold prince consort, and thus Leopold II of Belgium would not have existed nor would we have the genocide of the people of the Congo enslaved by the hands of Leopold II, just as Queen Victoria would not have existed as she was the result of the race for the next heir to the throne and her father Edward Duke of Kent won, without Queen Victoria without her marriage to Prince Albert and without her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. and a large part of them mixed with other members of the European royal families, that is without Kaiser Wilhelm II, Nicholas II, George V and of course without Queen Elizabeth II and the current King Charles III. The death of Princess Charlotte of Wales changed the entire course of history not only of the succession to the British throne but also of several European monarchies
I doubt that any of the really major events in history would have been significantly altered by Charlotte surviving. The only major change would have been the names attached.

Without Queen Victoria consequently without the current royal family, bringing the First World War into the matter without Kaiser Wilhelm II, George V, Nicholas II etc. If Charlotte had lived she would have become Queen Charlotte I and the kingdoms to which Queen Victoria married many of her children and grandchildren would have taken a totally different course from what our history has been

So many “what ifs” with her. Queen Victoria wouldn’t even have been born if she’d lived. She was more open-hearted and liberal than Queen Victoria. I think the 19th century would have been very different if she had ascended the throne.

You know... I like trying to find redeeming qualities in historical villains like George IV, but listening to the way he treated his only child, I'm utterly disgusted.
Lindsay doesn't even have time to mention here how he blackmailed his first wife into a relationship by threatening suicide. No doubt Maria had some type of real compassion for him but it was not a great marriage even before he completely abandoned it

@chrisgeenadriver1631 Excuse me? Edward didn't blackmail Wallis. If anything, she forced him into abdicating, or really, choosing between his duty to his country or her. She would have been perfectly happy to keep milking him for gifts and staying his mistress (what Camilla should have done). She knew he would cave in and marry her. Her whole life was trading one man for another if he was further up in status or wealth. Her treatment of him in their later years was heartless. She played the "Widow of Windsor" so well after his death that she had a lot of people fooled, but her letters published after her death were pretty disdainful of him. Luckily, the Royal Family recognized her for what she was.

The prenatal "care" is an absolute nightmare. So many women had to endure this 😢
50 hours dying in labor unable to push is wild! Such a painful and traumatic way to die. So many things done commonly today could’ve saved her and even prevented it getting to such a dramatic place.

This video made me sad. No one ever has a perfect life, but it sounds like Charlotte barely ever got a chance for even a happy one. I'm glad that she at least found love with Leopold. Bless them both ❤
Her memorial in St Georges Chapel is so moving and mournful, I wanted to cry. She was like the Princess Diana of her day. All the country plunged into mourning. The stores ran out of black bunting and ribbon. There is a piece of jewelry inn the V&A museum that has a lock of her hair.

No matter how much they hated each other, George & Caroline could have at least tried to conceive more than one child in the early days of their marriage. Back then, having Charlotte without siblings was reckless.
Exactly. I think the king and queen of Naples and Sicily hated each other but I believe they still had 16 children.
They hated each other but obviously enjoyed sex.
Charlotte's regal parents despised each other like crazy, and apparently only slept with each other for sole purposes of producing an heir. As soon as that happened, they stopped trying. Humanity sometimes only cares about the present, instead of leaning in the future. They just didn't consider Charlotte's future chances of passing.
Also an important fact is that pregnancies were harder back then compared to now, it was a death sentence for women, sadly.
It must have been emotionally hard and physically dangerous. Childbirths and colds were a strong cause for death back in those days - being aware of this they probably didn't want to risk it. For example, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands tried getting pregnant a dozen times, and suffered many miscarriages, painful births, and stillborn children, so she was deeply relieved when she finally welcomed a healthy baby, and was determined to stop there. As medicine and biological research developed, people were willing to take risks by getting pregnant, because it became less of a life-threatening practice. That's what I'm assuming.
We don't die of childbirths anymore, thankfully, but even today, getting naturally pregnant is a struggle for many. Imagine that struggle in the past, and the chances of you dying on top of that as well.
@@kamilyakadyr7063George IV cerianly didn't stop trying for children out of concern for his wife. Queen Consort Charlotte had 15 children which wasn't that uncommon of a number for royal brides. Every child was a gamble for every woman, everybody knew that, but most woman didn't have the luxury to have just one or two; they had to have as many as possible because there was no guarantee that their children would live.

Humanity and reproduction survived this far after all. I guess it just depended on the person and the choices that were made at the end of the day. I was just trying to explain the possible factors

One thing that everyone seems to forget is that Charlotte's birth, wedding and (if ended in a good way) childbirth only solved the problem for the british crown not the hannoverian, unless the hannoverian succession had been changed in her favour. Providing Charlotte hadn't died she could have had another two, three or four more children when succeding to the british throne aged 34 having a bunch of heirs to carry on her line. If the boy had survived while she herself wouldn't have he would have succeded his grandfather at the age of 13 with a regency in the best case of his father or someone more responsible the George IV had been.
The Crown of Hanover would’ve passed back and fourth between George’s other sons, with one likely marrying and securing a son so it wasn’t a huge issue

Lindsay, you should do a series on royal heirs who predeceased their monarch and how that changed history (i.e. Prince Arthur dying before Henry VII so Henry VIII asceded the throne instead)
Another great example of this is Edward the Black Prince dying before his father Edward III, which eventually led to the Wars of the Roses

Asoiaf fan here; I think Rhaenys got the nickname "The Queen who never was" from Princess Charlotte of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales. Definitely in character for GRRM. Rhaenys is such a great character.

@@damonika09 Everyone grieves differently and responds to it differently, but that doesn't mean they don't love them. George was bedridden for weeks and he fell into a deep depression when Charlotte died. Moreover, he was suffering from gout at that time, which made it difficult for him to carry out his activities.
@@dukeofbekasi2789 yep. No parent should bury a child always ring true. And still applies to him. He lost his daughter and grandson in one night. He shouldn’t have gotten the blame for what happened to Charlotte either. It’s just tragic all around.

Charlotte looked 10 years older than she actually was.
When women today say they are born in the wrong era and how they wish they were born in the past, I always think about birth process. So many lost their lives during child birth.
So a big NOP.
Not to mention, if the woman failed to give birth to a son, it was considered her fault, never mind that it takes two to tango and the king is just as culpable.😅

In both cases, history was dramatically altered. In Charlotte’s case, her not becoming Queen led to Victoria becoming Queen instead. Victoria tried to avert war by marrying her children off into Europe’s royal houses but it backfired dramatically when her grandchildren all turned on each other about a decade after her death and thus came world war I. Rhaenys not becoming Queen led to Viserys taking the throne and we all know how his actions led to the Dance of Dragons.

I labored for 64 hours. They also declined food. I nearly bled to death after a traumatic delivery. My baby almost died too. He was 8.3 lbs, he BH just turned 12 years old. I feel for poor Princess Charlotte

Thank you for this video! Last fall, when I had to have an emergency c section for my daughter due to some complications, ALL I could think about during the surgery was poor Princess Charlotte. I just kept thinking if I had these complications 200 years ago I could have ended up like her - it was a sobering reality of how dangerous childbirth is to women and how the death of royal women during childbirth has changed history.
Let me just say that I have mad respect for you, Lindsay! You really got me interested in history, and I've learned more in your history 'classes' then in real life ones in school! You're incredible, and keep up the amazing work! Would you be interested in doing a video about the history of medicine, medical school, etc. ?

Leoplod was the brother of Queen Victoria's mother as well as Prince Albert's father.
He was a direct blood uncle to both.
Actually, Prince Albert's father was Ernst, duke of Saxe-Coburg, not Leopold.

Princess Charlotte is the spitting image of Susannah Harker, who played Jane Bennet in the “Pride and Prejudice” miniseries (1995).
I think they might have chosen Susannah Harker for that role, because she very much fit the beauty ideal of that time.
People like to complain that in the 1995 adaptation, Lizzy was actually prettier than Jane, but in Regency times, this Jane would have been considered superior in looks.

I think king George iii should have let his daughters to marry when they were able to have children.
That had more to do with their mother. She was reluctant to have her daughters marry. Those who did marry did it when they were unlikely to have children and literally had to beg Queen Charlotte to allow it.

George III was not mad, he suffered from Porphyria. Porphyria is not a "mental illness". Porphyria is a defect in the metabolism of red blood cell molecules, responsible for transporting oxygen. One of its symptoms is suffering from hallucinations and mental confusion, among many other ailments, hence the belief, at the time, that the king was mad. Today it is a disease that can be managed with medication.

This is a reason why a c section is needed, as it is the only safe presager that can be done if complications like this happen as they have been done since ancient times, so if that had been done there is some chance both might have been saved. Her father was a real piece of work and so was his mistress. If she and the baby had survived, I still think Queen Victoria and her bloodline would still have existed since there wouldn't have been much guarantee on how long Charlotte and her child would have live in a general sense. Either way I'm sure Charlotte and Leopold would have been great rulers and things would have turned out a lot better in so many ways if things had been different.

Daaaang, Leopold was a looker! I never saw that picture of him before, no wonder Charlotte was charmed!
His family was notorious for producing some of the best looking men of the era. Albert, his brother Ernst, their cousin Ferdinand were all famously gorgeous and VERY popular with the ladies. Albert and Ferdinand married two of the most powerful women of the time (Victoria and Maria, queen of Portugal) and Ernst was a notorious playboy all over Europe.
Augustus, Duke of Sussex was always the cool uncle of George III's sons. I feel that if Charlotte had lived longer they'd have been great friends and allies at court...

Her prenatal care was horrible, if only she was treated better maybe history would be so different. Just deeply tragic! What makes it even sadder is that her beloved Leopold couldn’t be there by her side, that had to have devastated him!

In the discussion of the problems that she had with her pregnancies, no one seems to talk about the fact that her parents were 1st cousins (as later Victoria and Albert would be) and what issues could arise from that. I have found it odd that after seeing all of the dour photos that I've seen of Leopold as King of the Belgians, he was considered the most handsome prince in all of Europe when he married Charlotte. The only good thing that can be said for her father is that he had the most exquisite taste imaginable. Excellent video.
It isn't odd. Beaty standards are never the same. He would be considered average these days, but concepts of beauty change. Many of the beautiful ladies of that time wouldn't be considered beautiful today.
@@blahblahblahblah729 Many of the beautiful ladies of today would have been considered anorexic (if that term existed back then - but you get the point) back in the days of great beauties like Lillian Russell. Also, there are no photographs of a young Prince Leopold only those of him later in life.
Inbreeding does not work that way and the public has no clue how it actually shows up. It doesn't cause people to be ugly or deformed and most commonly it shows up as a genetic anomaly that isn't even detectable visually, not to mention that although it's gross, 1st cousins having children together isn't super dangerous, you'd need parent and child relationships for many generations in a row to produce any noticeable effect genetically.
@blahblahblahblah729 he is older in those pictures, though. The portrait in his youth looks v handsome but likely is tweaked. We have portraits of a young Victoria that shows her looking pretty but the 1st photo of her is when she is 25. She looks way older and not much like the portraits being painted a year before the pic. So who really knows if he was handsome when young. Also I'd imagine the royals would have a lower standard for beauty amongst marriage prospects. They normally had to marry other royals and nobles who were related to them. The list of prospective spouses was limited. So their idea of beauty had to be lower.
@@jamiemohan2049 "The handsomest prince in Europe" was Leopold's reputation in the salons and ballrooms all over the continent, not just in the royal marriage market. However, by the time he became a king in 1831, he was older and less happy.
Id love if you could make a video of these “queens who never were” like women who were close to inherit the throne but either for the birth of a brother or anything else they couldn’t
