    My children bought me a new compound bow for Father's day, it's my first bow. There's more to hunting with it than I first thought. I've got some 500 spine arrows that shoot fantastic with my field points and my hundred grain fixed 3 blade broadheads I'm only shooting about 55 lb not really sure I need to get anything else , only shooting out to 30 yards confidently right now

      Ive been in archery for 45 years. One thing I have found is that there is a ton of misinformation out there about archery in general because so many folks misinterpret what they hear or read, then pass that along to someone else who has to figure that out and it just gets worse. Sticking to basics will always get you steered in the right direction. When guys try to get everything "maxed out" (speed etc) is when it gets confusing and stressful. Good luck to you.

    This is a good video. One thing I never hear anyone talk about is the lever arm and moment around an axis. I am a collision reconstructionist and I deal in physics all day long. Force, lever arm and moment calculations in my business equates to damage among other things. In archery it would equate to flex in the arrow shaft. Say you have 2- 50 pound recurves. One has limbs 3 inches longer than the other. The longer limbs will return slower, having more mass, giving that bow a lower fps shot. The inertia everyone loves to talk about would be different on those 2 50 pound bows. That would mean different spine requirements. So it is not just poundage, but speed of return that affects spine.
    Your point regarding why and how a fixed broadhead can steer the arrow is an excellent point.

    • @JBplumbing12

      Interesting point about length of lever arm together with poundage effecting the bowstring's speed of return, and speed of return effecting upon flex of arrow shaft.

    Hi your photo at 2:53 when your showing the bow at full draw its reading 50.73 pounds . How is that possible if you have any let off at all with the cams ? wouldn't the reading at full draw be less some where around the 20 lb weight ? So wouldn't you want to watch the scale and as your pulling the bow back before you get to the cam's let off . So in your photo the 50 .73 reading would have been at the 25 inch range and not at full draw length ?

    • @archeryology101
      @archeryology101  2 года назад

    • @kevinchrist1658
      @kevinchrist1658 Год назад +1

      Stiffer isn't always better, especially if you are shooting traditional archery. The arrows do need to very slightly bend around the shelf/side plate as they travel off the riser. If an arrow is too stiff and can't bend, then the riser will slightly push the shaft off to one side.

    • @archeryology101
      @archeryology101  2 года назад

      Yes it can make a difference. I truly believe most arrow charts in use today were the same ones used 20 years ago. Companies need to adapt to changes by the bow manufacturers.

  • @drmitofit2673
    @drmitofit2673 Год назад

    The most confusing, non-intuitive number for novices is arrow spine. The best way to think about it is arrow deflection (bending) for a given arrow length and force, rather than incorrectly thinking it's "spine weight". Thus a higher poundage bow should be matched with a stiffer, LOWER deflection arrow. Such as 500 for 40-50 lb target bows, 400 for 50-60 lb compounds and 340 for 60-70 lb compounds. It also depends on draw length as it relates to arrow length, type of release, and field point weight (thus the need for look up tables).

    • @fahlvfaust677
      @fahlvfaust677 Год назад

      Some beginners like to choose a 600 spine, even if their draw length is short. For example, 600 spine, 27" DL, and 30lb are way too stiff; they did not notice that arrow length is part of draw length.

    • @archeryology101
      @archeryology101  3 года назад

      If you are using a standard aluminum insert (about 12 grains) and your actual arrow length is less than 28" you'll be ok with the 400 spine. If your arrow is longer than 28" the spine will be weaker, thus creating impact flex when your arrow impacts the target. This results in a loss of penetration. I generally recommend a 350 spine for your specs. Shoot straight! 🎯

    I'm shooting a Mathews Vertix with a 29"draw and a 28" axis 400 that seems under spined at 62lbs when I add manufacturer's IBO rated speed that Eastons chart goes by hard cam but others charts say 340 spine does that seem more correct

    • @archeryology101
      @archeryology101  5 лет назад +2

      In my opinion I think a 340 spine would be a better option for you. That Vertix has an efficient cam system. I think as we progress with new bow technology many of the spine charts have not been adjusted to reflect the kinetic energy generated by newer bows which results in more flex in your arrow.

    • @Underwater_Explorer
      @Underwater_Explorer 5 лет назад

      tried checking your data on the Easton Charts. Vertix is rated 343 fps. 341-350 fps. you add 5 lbs to your draw weight when checking the charts. so 62lbs +5 lbs = 67 lbs. YOu will be under the 67-72 lbs with 28" arrow. Definitely 340 spine
