When I was shooting and wanted to measure my draw I used a piece of cardboard with a slit cut in it. I put it on the arrow and drew it back. The cardboard would slide as I drew the bow back to my exact drawlength. You don't need someone to look at it for you.
I measure my draw lenght with a clothes peg on my arrow. Fully draw to your anchor point and then measure the distance from the nock's throat to the clothes peg on your arrow.
It's hard to walk away from my old aluminum XX75 2117's...but I might just have to come up out of the 90s. Its hard to change when something has been working for so long
Thank you for another great video. You know arrows like I know bullets ! I will have to watch this one a few times to get it in my memory bank. God's blessings on you and yours !
I am so glad I watched this video when I did I had 500 on the way my bow is marked 40 lb at 28 in I have a 29 inch draw so I needed 600 spine arrows and I still had time to change my order one more hour it would have been too late God bless you Mr Jeff
I don't shoot a HS bow but i struggled for the longest time with consistency, then noticed one day i had been torquing the bow bad during the shot. After that correction the arrows were flying straight again. Great video
Jeff a question and suggestion if I may, to help someone new to Goldtips (including myself) would be for you to mention as you explain to go up to 600 or down to 400 or even 300 from let’s say the starting point of 500 spine, to also add the words stiffer or less stiff, according to the numbers. This would help to clarify what you are saying. My 30” (purchased length) 500’s are bare shaft tuning at ten yards with nocks flipping far to the left shooting LH from my 40 lb. recurve (43 at my draw length). No amount of adding brass inserts helps it. Also, using only an insert and 125 gr. field tip doesn’t help it. They still flip left into my sandbank target. My release and form are fine from a lifetime of bowhunting since age 4 but mostly wood arrows. I love Forrester wood shifts the best. But these Goldtips not cooperating is frustrating. This indicates my need for a stiffer shaft if my brain cells are rubbing together correctly. One of my friends says to get 600’s (is this weaker or stiffer? than the 500’s?) but my other friend says to get 400’s (is this weaker or stiffer than the 500’s?). Thanks!
You actually mentioned my draw length, more or less. 27" My 2 recurves are marked as 40#, and according to 3RiversArchery, that means I'm pulling about 37#. (also mentioned that one is about average length and the other is shorter, like 54", and they said that the bow length is irrelevant) And in regards to the Gold Tip Warriors I've been getting, I got a couple 600 spine the other and tried them out along side the 500, both at 30" and using the 100 grain field points (2 of each). Shot the 4 four times. The 600 did seem to shoot straighter at first, but the more I shot, the harder it was to tell.
I found out about touch channel in archery talk forums. Man I’m glad I did. We have the same draw length and arrow length. Currently I use 28 1/2 inch 600 spines with 150 grain tips.
So, cool thanks a lot for your personel hinds, to get better step by step. My LB 35# at 28".my draw lengh is 28.7 " So im trying to tune a 700 with 31" And a 100 grain point. Greetings Germany perfektness.greetings Gree
The advice you gave me awhile back was spot on. Thanks again! Rule of thumb with the weights up front is very helpful. Most manufacturers spine charts show only 100-150gr point weights (head plus insert). Not realistic at all for hunting loads. I ended up going with Easton Axis 5mm Trads in a 500 instead of the Black Eagle Instincts. I have 150gr VPA’s up front right now with the 25gr half out insert, but nice to know I can get away with a 200gr head up front using the same insert!
Looking to get into longbow mainly for 3d/field. 40lb longbow should get me in the 400-350 spine range (31" draw) according to easton's spine checker (100gr point & 50gr insert). for an actual hunting setup (200gr/100 insert) i'm probably looking at a 300-250 spine.
Jeff, I am really enjoying your channel and learning a tremendous amount of information about traditional archery. Also love that you use your platform to always give God the glory! I used to shoot a 60# compound, but haven't shot in years due to busy schedule and heath issues. I have obtained a 30# Black Hunter longbow that I want to learn to shoot. This bow would be only for target practice and maybe 3D until I work up in ability and strength to shoot 40 to 45 lbs. and start hunting, at which point I will purchase appropriate bow and arrow combination. My draw length is 28 inches, can you recommend arrows for me to get started with. Thanks and God Bless! David
Thanks David, you’ll probably want to go with some 700 spine Gold Tip Warriors from 3rivers pre fletched and just run a stock insert with like a 125-150 grain field point it should shoot great especially if they’re cut about 30” you can also buy them factory fletched from Lancaster one at a time or however many you need they’re really good and cheap!
Love your videos thanks for all the info I’m switching to a striker classic 58” longbow from a CD WF19 Uhkaa limbed recurve. I draw 27 like you. Bow is marked 45 @28 so I’m guessing I’m drawing 43. I have a peculiar conundrum. I need to cut my shafts at 27 and 3/4 to maintain a fixed crawl at 20 yds. I plan on shooting Easton axis traditionals with 75gr brass inserts and Zwicky eskimo screw in heads which I believe are 175gr for 250 up front. Should I order 600 or 500? You’re so right the charts don’t account for 250 gr up front. Thanks in advance!! Matt
I’m going to say a 600 just because with a fixed crawl you’ll have a little less energy than split and with it cut less than 28” and pulling less than 45# on the bow the 500’s might be a tad stiff so I’m gonna say a 600 in axis plus they actually spine a hair stiffer than standard arrows so you should be good going 600👍🏻
For some reason, I am an exception to the rule. I am drawing 50lbs at about 29”. 500s were too weak. Full length 340s and 30.5” 400s bare shaft well with 200 up front. Can’t add more weight. I still haven’t found woods stiff enough. Tried 60-65s last time and they are still too weak with 125 up front and cut to riser. Not sure why I need such a stiff arrow. But I’m getting it ironed out now
Thank you so much Jeff for perfect informative video! I'm so glad you are sending again and looking happy! I hade a problem with already well tuned arrows. I hade 400 spine 29 inches cut arrows perfectly turned to my 50# recurve which I draw 47-48 from it. I changed the string which used to be 12 strand to first 16 strand D-97. The arrows or maybe better to say the string become to be so slow that the arrows becomes to be too stiff. I hade to cut two strands on the string (to go to 14 strands) to make the bow faster and in the same time more power to the arrow. It helped a bit but the arrows on the bare shaft are still too stiff. (I have 250 grains in front.) Do you have any thoughts on that? Is that possible that different string make such a different? Thank you so much for you time and knowledge you share with us! God bless! Filip from Sweden
Recently discovered your material, much appreciated. I'm one of those long armed guys with a long draw length, about 31.5". I'm going to be pulling 50-52# at that length and planning to end up with a 500-525 grain total weight (hunting). After studying all of the charts I can find, I think I should start with a carbon shaft in the 300 or 350 spine. Does that seem like a good place to be in your opinion?
@@rohlfing63Too stiff brother seriously the charts are way off, at the very most a 340 with plenty of point weight and any less than about 250 grains you’re going to need a 400 spine even at like 32” Carbon to carbon but a 340 will be safe and you can always add point weight if needed even if you go with Easton Legacy which I believe go out to 34”
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 thanks much Jeff! It's been pretty frustrating trying to find consistency across the charts, need some real life feedback from folks like yourself to get up the learning curve more quickly. Thinking I'll grab a few 340/350 and a few at 400 and see how things shake out. If the 400s aren't stiff enough to handle a hunting configuration I can always set them up with a lighter tip weight for target practice. Thanks again, really appreciate your content and replies!
Do bow manufacturers measure draw length (the 28" standard) at the front of the bow, the back of the bow. or at the high point of the shelf radius (assuming there's a radius)?
I’m a 26” draw and my bow is 45# @ 28”. Planning on gap shooting. Can you help with length and spine. Not sure how much weight up front either. I’m going to 3D shoot and eventually hunt with it. Thanks in advance.
Im trying to figure out what arrows to setup with my new 175 grn heads for hunting. THe bow is a colts huntsman recurve. Basically a Kodiak magnum. 48# at 28" I draw about 29. The whole thing is a bit confusing. I dont have a fletching jig so I want to order fletched arrows. This means I cant bare shaft. My wants are tough as possible, and good shooting. Looking at the Ethics systems. and knock sleeves as well. Id like to use them for all my shooting from stump to 3d. just dont know what spine to get.
Yes sir depending on exactly how long you’re actual shafts will be at 400 should be fine that is if they’re not over 31” and not too much point weight, a 400 will usually tune with up to 300gr total, but if you’re wanting to run Ethics and a 175gr at your length I’d go with a 340 but it greatly depends on if you’re actually drawing the bow that far (29”) if so you can still get by with 400’s cut at 30 1/2” most likely but I’d buy a bare shaft test kit from 3rivers to see for sure 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Awesome, Thanks I was leaning that way but dont want to spend that kind of money without at least a hope of getting close. Ill make sure of my draw length before I pull the trigger
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I just did a measurement and the best I can figure is I draw between 27.5 and 28. If I plug those numbers in to the spine calculator on 3 rivers. Trad only 340, 30", luminocks, 175 points, and 110 ethics up front. I get basically even on the calculator. I think ill go with these for now and hope for the best. What are your thoughts on the calculator? Thanks
@@DirtyShopDIY the calculator is pretty close but I would go with gold tip traditional they’re much tougher. And the Easton Legacy is a good choice I shoot both just a big fan of Gold Tip.
HI Jeff, first off your video teachings have Improved my trad shooting sooo...much, but still learning from you. I know I'm really late for asking a question on this post, but if you come across my question it's- "For a one piece wooden long bow AND a one piece wooden recurve, are the spine calculation selections the same for both wooden one piece bows from factory charts? Example Easton has Longbow but then has Recurve but doesn't specify "wooden" for recurve. It could be Olympic recurve for that matter because they don't indicate. Thanks so much.
Yes sir the arrow charts are not very accurate because they’re usually based on light point weight and honestly every bow is different in how much energy it stores at certain draw lengths, if you can give me the specifics on the bows as far as draw weight at your length and how much point weight your wanting to run I can get closer also a test kit from 3rivers is a great option to really figure out what they like best 👍🏻
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 The bow is a Bear Kodiak Hunter, this is the bow I've been learning how to shoot traditional. (from you btw). Only 36# on my scale, and I'm not going to hunt with it. I draw 28-28.25 inches. I'm planning on buying Easton Legacy Fed Eichler arrows 500's because the 600's I bought at 29" w/100g tips were too weak. That said I'[d like to shoot a 30"arrow with 125g point, but the 3 Rivers chart said, If I read it right, that a 34" arrow with that point weight would work. The length doesn't matter too much to me. Just target shooting. Your thoughts?
@@Garuda16 man that’s really odd, any 36# bow with only that much point weight should shoot 600’s even at full length unless you’re getting a false reading, in my opinion a 50 spine would definitely have to be at least 31” with some decent point weight to tune out of it but really the best thing to do call the guys and make sure but then again the slim diameter.204 do defiantly tend weaker than standard shafts no matter what they’re labeled so the Eichlers might need to be 500’s 👍🏻
Hi Jeff. I am fairly new to the sport and I have learned a lot from your videos. Now I need some help from you or possibly one of your subscribers. I bought a PMZ 3 piece take down longbow. No instructions!!! The bow limbs are marked ‘A” and “B” I have no idea what limb goes where?? I’m thinking the “A” limb is the top limb but I don’t know. Help!! Thank You.
Yes sir if the limb butts are both cut square and exactly alike that’s probably the case, most black hunters and Toparchery bows have a cut on the corners of the top limb to match the sight window and if they’re identical just see which way shoots best because they’re supposed to be both exact strength to give them an even tiller but it’s even better if the top limb is slightly weaker giving what’s called a positive tiller but you’ll just have to try and see what works best and hopefully the top limb is notched on the corner 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Thank you for getting back to me. Both limbs are identical visually but I believe the top or “A” limb is just a tad weaker than the bottom. So I think we’ve got it. Again I enjoy your videos. 🇺🇸

So my draw length is about 31in Recurve bow 50lbs. Manufacturer does not say at what draw length I'm looking at a set of easton legacy 400 spine 34in long arrows. Are those too long?
Hey Jeff and channel fans. Just started shooting a Mandarin Duck Black Hunter 60" Recurve at 40#@28". My draw is 28" and ordered 30" carbon SP500 spine arrows to practice with. They have about 100 grain tips, and cheap aluminum inserts, and nock left at 10-15 yards. Not shooting any further until I get some practice. What are my options if I want to start adding hunting weight for small game (rabits, squirrels, turkeys, and such)? I assume not much more weight is needed. Will these 500 spine arrows work with my draw or should I get 600's? I am making a bare shaft to test and better tune but maybe they're nocking left due to the short shooting distance. Thank You for any advice.
If it’s not a gold tip arrow like warriors or traditionals or even Easton don’t trust the reading on bare shafts but a 500 should be plenty stiff enough also check the actual weight and draw length sometimes they’re different than what you think but all of that really doesn’t matter as long as they fly good for practicing but I’m betting they’re actually too stiff needing some more point weight 👍🏻
I have an ILF bow. 50# limbs at 28”. My draw is probably 26” so I’m drawing about 46#. I will be shooting 250gr. Up front. I can cut arrows to whatever length? Probably 271/2 to 28”. I assume you would suggest a 500?
Thanks for the video Jeff. I've been talking with my local bowyer but he doesn't know longbows at all he's all compound. I've ordered me some 500 spine gold tips I have 50 grain brass inserts and 150 grain points. I'm hoping they fly good. You're making me think they will 😂
Jeff, I’m running a 51@ 28 64” long bow my draw is 29.5/30 looking to run 225-250 up front total. Think 340’s dark Timbers cut around 31.5 would work well? Thanks!
Man I would honestly think a 400 would be plenty stiff, but you can always run a little more point weight if they do turn out stiff, I’ve got some 500’s with 300 up front cut 28.5” shooting them out of a 48# recurve and they’re great so that’s why I’m thinking 400’s for you.
DL= 28 Shooting a 40lb longbow, how heavy can I go with a 29” 600 spine arrow? I was wanting to try 300 upfront and a wrap with lumenok in the back , but did not know if the shaft could handle it. Thanks
It will no problem if you’re not drawing much more than 40# on a 29” arrow, the wraps and lumenock will actually stiffen it a little so you should be fine especially with a longbow 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
bow = 37# at 28" I have a 27.25" DL. Currently trying 29" 1716 with 85 grn Point + 10grn insert. Wondering about changing to a 29" 1816 with 100 grain point?
Hi Jeff I’m getting black hunter 50lb I’m new to recurve I want to hunt with it what spine I need o forgot my draw weight I shoot 400 spine on my compound at 48-49 lbs
PS. After hearing all you have said here, looks like 400 is indeed stiffer than 500 spine and if I want to use 150 grain broadhead then maybe the 400 spine would be best if I’m pulling my 40 lb. bow to 43-45 lbs. draw length, ya think? Thanks!
I wouldn’t think you’d need a 400 spine at 45# with just a 150 gr head, a 500 would be fine unless you’re running like a 30” arrow with a total point weight of around 250 grains or more but if you are then yes , I’d buy a bare shaft test kit from 3rivers to be sure before you order arrows it’s a safe bet plus you can cut and play with different point weights to see what your bow likes best 👍🏻
I’m shooting a Ausable marked at 52# at 28”. At my draw length of 29 -7/8”, the actual draw weight is 58 lbs. I like heavy point weights and high FOC so I’m currently running 325 gr up front. I was told to try 500’s- way too weak, went to 400’s also too weak. Landed on 340 spine velocity shafts cut to 30.75”. To my eye it looks to fly good with no left and right oscillation but a bare shaft does come out nock high no matter what I do. I’m guessing it’s just the heavy point weight but would like you opinion. Thanks! Chris from Georgia
I’m shooting a Bodnik quick stik 60 inch long bow at 60 pounds but I draw 26 inches so I’m guessing I’m pulling around 54 or 53. I want to shoot a 204 gold tip traditional classic xt instinctive. What spine and how long should I have them cut. Thanks brother 🏹👊🏼🤙🏼Great vid
Thanks for this Jeff. I'm looking at Gold Tip Traditional 500s, for my 45lb recurve at 29.5" would you recommend these Shafts? Are Gold tips good & strong? Also Brass or Stainless steel inserts, Brass seems to have the weight, especially as most Broadheads are 100-125 grains.
Absolutely! I really like the 100gr brass with the larger glue slots like Lancaster offers, they seem to stay in much better but 3rivers has the stainless, either one is the choice in 100 grains for the GT’s
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Perfect! So 45lb bow, my draw length is 28" (+ 1.5") so 29.5". Gold Tip Traditional 500 shafts. 250g up front (100g GT Brass inserts + 5g Protector Hat + 145g Points). How does that sound for my order? Do you think this combination will fly well?
Sir, I am hoping you can give arrow recommendation. I have a 3Rivers Tomahawk Bow Diamond Series. The specs are 55# @28” and 62” AMO. My draw length is 26 1/2”. My plan is to use it for deer hunting. Any insight you can provide is greatly appreciated…. Also, your videos are very informative. I am just returning to longbow shooting after many years shooting compound.
Well that’s an interesting one! Okay first off a satori will shoot a stiffer spine fine because they’re cut well past center and you are able to add or take away plastic shims from the strike plate and they’re pretty powerful as well so in the case of a 30” arrow I’m saying a 400 spine, if you want to shoot plenty of point weight and get the arrows over 500 grains that’ll be what you want, if you’re really drawing 28.5” that is. If you decide to shoot 500’s you’ll want a couple of the shims in place and cut the arrows 29.5” with around 200 grains up front but that’ll only give you around a 480 grain arrow max unless you build some a slightly heavier gpi like most coated or traditional finishes offer opposed to black shafts👍🏻
Great info here 👍Just wondering though what your thoughts are on the minimum required GPI for a hunting set up with a 500 arrow and 250gr up front with a draw weight of 45lb , as you know there can be quite a big GPI margin between the cheaper vs expensive arrows ... the cheaper lighter Skylon Carbon Edge 6.2´s for example in 500gr only run at 5.80 GPI where as the thicker walled more expensive pins obviously run with a higher GPI even though they´re the same spine weight of 500... Am I off track here , or should I just go with GPP instead (total finished arrow weight) ?
Hey Jeff, what arrow would you recommend to start with, my recurve is 58# @ 26in. I'm drawing 26in. I'm wanting to shoot Around 250 up front, i dont mind shooting less, Wanting to run a 100gr brass insert. Should I Be shooting a 400 or try out a 340? Hope to hear back, thanks!
Okay everything depends on the total length you want to have the arrow, if it’s say under 28” probably a 400 if longer then I’d say a 340 and if it’s a hair stiff you can always run like 275-300 grains up front but it might be best to order a test kit from 3rivers to play with first then you’ll know for sure what the bow likes 👍🏻
I need help with arrow selection! I shoot a40# bear grizzly @ 28” I draw 29” my arrows are 30” every arrow chart says I need a 340 shaft. I currently have 400 spine Easton legacy with 275grn. Up front what to do??
Hi Jeff I hope this finds you doing well. I was wondering if you can help me come up with a couple arrow options for my set up. I shoot a Hunter ‘s Niche 58” recurve, pulling 55#@28”. I have a 27” draw length, would like a broadhead weight some between 150-200g. Thank you so much for all you do to help educate us in archery!
Yes sir with your 27” draw you’re probably pulling around 52 pounds so a 400 cut at 28 1/2” should be perfect, that’ll allow you to run more point weight like weighted inserts if you want to, I always recommend around 250 grains up front on a hunting arrow plus they fly really well, when it comes to arrows if you’re able to fletch your own the best performing shafts especially for the money are the Gold Tip Hunter XT’s from Lancaster, they’re excellent, other than that I really like Gold Tip traditional arrows and behind that the Easton Legacy but they didn’t seem to be as consistent as the Gold Tips 👍🏻
Jeff, Thank you so much for your reply. Yes I do fletch my own arrows. I was considering at least a 200g insert. The setups you mentioned should except this correct, with a 150-200g broadhead? Thank you
I am shooting a 68” long bow. I have a 30” drawl length my bow is rated for 60 pounds at 28 inches I currently shoot a 400 spine with 100gr tip and it spot on for me. I want to hunt this year with this bow and I want some practice with new arrows. I’m thinking about putting 250 greens on the tip. What should I go with with a spine? Thanks.
Okay you’ll want to go with some 340’s and run about 250 grains up front and you will be able to go a little more if you want with a 340 only because of the poundage and draw length but that would be an awesome hunting setup, I would recommend getting an arrow like gold tip or Easton that’s anywhere from 9-11 grains per pound to give you a total finished weight of 500 grains plus 👍🏻
Please help Jeff. 54 pound longbow, reflex deflex, 28 inch draw. 190 grain heads and 100 grain brass inserts. Still praying for you and your family!! I have 250, 300 and 400 shafts at my fingertips.
Hi Jeff, I have a recurve that's custom built to my spes which is 38# @ 30" I want 250grn up front and the arrow to be cut 1.5" longer than my draw length...what size arrows do I need?
Jeff, Im shooting a Bear Kodiak Hunter in 50# at 28'' my draw length is 26.5'' Which spine should I shoot? I want to load the front with about 300 grains. I have my compound set up with a 550ish grain 25.5'' carbon to carbon cut 300 spine arrow so hearing the 500 or 400 is interesting to me because of the difference needed between a compound and recurve. Thanks for the help in advance
Excellent info. Jeff can you give me an example of a 600 build that gets into the 500-550 range? I'm struggling with that. I used 3gpi weight tubes in my Legacy 600's running 175 up front. I'm still under 500 grains with my 41lb bow. I can't go any shorter on the shaft to bump my point weight up and I really don't want to go to 500's. Been there done that and they run too slow with a poor trajectory at longer distances for me. Maybe there is another shaft you know of?
Yes sir depending on length, a heavier gpi shaft like victory or axis, something with small diameter and thicker wall will usually get there on a 29” arrow 👍🏻
I'm definitely no Jeff when it comes arrow ology. But if this helps you what the heck.... I tried lots of stuff... But worked for me is the Very reasonable$ Red labeled hunter 500 gold tips... Thair only 7.3 grains per inch... If you compare that to the other shafts You'll Notice they're quite a bit lighter. That means you're going to have more FOC weight with whatever you use which is a good thing.... For example I'm shooting a 45 pound recurve at 28-1/2" I'm running 200gr filed point and 100 grain brass... 545gr finished arrow. UNBELIEVABLE ACCURACY AND WITH 200gr BRODHEADS... If you try this and it works please send me a message...God Bless 🙏
How’s the spine work on the victory carbon trad arrows? Since they’re 450,550,650. I’ve been buying 600’s because I shoot 40# bows at 27 1/2” draw. Adding in that extra 50 in there is really throwing me off.
Hey mate love your videos, just curious on your recommendation for arrows for myself before I purchase to get me roughly in the ballpark. My bow is 46 pound at my draw length of 30 inches and am considering the black eagle instinct arrows which would be 100gr outsert and a 125gr broadhead (total 225gr up front)? Any advice would be appreciated
64" Hoyt satori. 28" draw=40lbs. Im a 29.5 draw. Tha bow shop i got tha bow at didn't explain shit, just took tha money and gave me some arrows= black eagle traditional 400 spine, Field point 100 grams. Im used to my mathews but wanted to get into traditional! What are tha best arrows for my bow and draw? Thank you for helping me!
Yes sir it happens a lot unfortunately but you’re going to need a 500 spine arrow cut around 31-31.5” with at least a 150 grain field point, the best cheaper arrows are the gold tip warriors, then from there probably the gold tip traditional or Easton Legacy, you can buy any of these pre fletched and cut with inserts installed as well as any points from 3rivers Archery, I’ve got a video on this exact subject back when we were full service traditional archery dealers on light poundage bow setups, it shows a variety of arrow builds for a 38-43# bow with various draw lengths 👍🏻
It totally depends on the bow and draw length because in my testing lately a full 28” and true 45# on a 30” shaft is very borderline weak but a 28” shaft stiffened up plenty from most recurves however a longbow usually prefers a slightly weaker one so honestly it’s best to bare shaft one with the 100 grain inserts to see how they do with your setup 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Thank you so much for your reply mate. It is a black hunter recurve 45lb @28"( yes I draw the 28").I'm totally beginner, still learning the process from scratch...(thanks to YT and you!) It seems to be flying pretty straight from about 12 meters distance that I'm experimenting it, at least on the horizontal axis it looks great... but I didn't get to set the height yet ( probably is the archer or nocking point issue...not the arrow set up). I might cut it to 29" just to be safer, as I notice the arrows are a bit over 30 inches (nock's throat to the end of the carbon.). Thank you so much for your hard work on educating us on this fine art, God bless you brother!
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Just one more thing, when you say "bare shaft", what that means exactly? Would that be the shaft with the nock only ( no feathers nor inserts/field point)?

@@larryadams2184 Hmm, it sounds like a fairly good setup to me but everything really depends on exactly how much weight you’re actually drawing at 25” if you are anywhere in the 40# range or less you probably just need to go with a 600 spine for sure and a lot depends on the bows shelf cut as well. Sometimes it’s best just to grab a bare shaft test kit from 3rivers to play with and know exactly what you’re bow likes best at least that’s what I usually do 👍🏻
Hello Jeff, nice RUclips channel! I recently picked up a 50 lb recurve bow to start messing with. I have used compound since age 12, i am 42 now. Wanted a new challenge. Anyhow, my draw length is 26.5, measuring the way you stated to do. What would be your suggestion as to a good spine arrow to start with, arrow length, and tip weight, for use on whitetail deer out to 20 yards? I would like to run 100 grain brass inserts up front. Thanks for any advice Jeff.
Hey Jeff! I just bought my first recurve and was wondering if my bow is 45 @ 28 and my draw is 29 and looking to run 250 on the front what spine would you suggest
Hey Jeff, I ended up with 200gr up front not 250gr (75 brass insert and 125 broadhead). With my 45# black hunter, 28.5” draw, and a 31” arrow would a 500 spine work with this setup? @instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
Hi Jeff, i need your help, I have 45@28 recurve, my draw is 26" my current arrow is a GT Warrior 500 cut at 28" with a 100 gr. brass insert and a 190 gr. Swamp Shark, am I good with this setup, i thought my draw was 27", I also have 600s with the same inserts, i also have bags of 50/100 gr. inserts, i am heavily invested in my Swamp Sharks and don't want to change broad heads, what would you suggest?,
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Thanks Jeff, man i was losing my mind thinking i had to make a change somwhere right before the season, lol, but the arrows fly like darts, feathers touching, YOU DA MAN!!!!

Well it depends on point weight but generally those would call for 700, 600, 500 spines based on not exceeding 150 grain points, also every bow is different in shelf cut and all around limb performance but as with an ILF rig just changing limbs yes those should be the ticket 👍🏻
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 thank you for responding! I just purchased a Black Hunter Takedown Recurve Bow 25lb@28. Like I said my draw is 30in, so I guess I'll need at least a 31" arrow. I'm going to start at 25lb and work up to 45@28 if possible. I am new to this and have no idea what grain tip weight or shaft to start out with. I just want to pick something safe/ middle of the road. So would a 31" 500 with a 150 grain be a safe pick?
@@danielames3937 yeah it depends on if you’re target shooting or hunting of coarse, my minimum total point weight for hunting is 225 grains including the weighted inserts but for target you can go much lighter and weaker arrows but yes usually a 500 is fine especially with the longbow limbs, some of the black hunters are cut deep and some are not, they’re never the same which will affect exactly what spine it likes, the best thing to do is buy some of the Amazon pure carbon arrows like Elon or Linkboy if that’s where you’re getting it from and they shoot great, that’ll allow you to bare shaft one of them to get it shooting the best, just let me know if you need any help 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I want to target practice to hunt, but the points are different. @@danielames3937 I have a friend that sells black hunters and dark timber arrows he can actually get you outfitted with everything at a great price Big Jim’s Bow Company, you can call them and explain what you’re wanting to start with and they will definitely take care of it for you, I wouldn’t actually start with 25# limbs they’re just way too far away from any hunting weight I’d start with a 35# and go from there honestly.
What spine victory carbon trad shooting a 40# recurve at 27 1/2” draw length with 200 grains up front??? The 550 650 ect spines are kind of confusing me sir.
Yes sir, depending on what point weight you’re wanting to run most likely a 400 with up to around 200 grains up front and possibly a 340 with 275-300 but a lot depends on the bow itself and how the shelves are cut as well as limb energy, I’d try a test kit from 3rivers just to play with and get them set up perfectly 👍🏻

i have a 30 lb re curve trad bow. my draw length is 27in. I have 30 inch carbon arrows with a 700 spine and a normal practice plastic tip. Is this the right arrow for my bow ? Thanks very much,
It’s really hard to say for sure in that low poundage but I would think a 30” 700 spine with a standard insert and a 125-150 grain field tip would work, you may have to go to an 800 spine, just really need to bare shaft test it to see.
Jeff, I am a 27.5" draw and I'm pulling 53lb (scale) I got a deal on Easton axis 300's and I'm trying to make them work. My bare shafts as far as I can tell are flying true but I can't get consistent groups with my fletched arrows. Is these my form and release? Hmm. Help. I seem to be right on the edge of everything I hear?. 40#, 29 draw 30.5" arrow. And would like to run 125 or 150 up front. Maybe move to 200. 400 on charts, but Many say 500s, You're kind of saying 600s...mind you With 250 up front
@@miragexl007 Yes sir usually with those specs a 500 is the ticket but it all depends on the bow itself and point weight of course that’s why I recommend getting a bare shaft test kit to know for sure!
Wish I saw this a month ago. I just bought the wrong arrows for both my bows. So I have two dozen wrong size. Can't afford to buy another at the moment. I bought gold tip classic traditionals 9/32 shafts and gold tip blems 5/16 shafts in 500 spine. Completely cut and fletched the smaller diameters. Maybe if somebody is interested I could get some of my money back and get what I need
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I have a half dozen warriors coming in the mail..... I'll try that. I was also told to up my brace height from 8 to 8.5 on the Montana so I'll try that too Thank you
Ok I have more info. 50# Montana longbow I pull 26.5 draw so I'm right on that 47# ish line. Changed brace height from 7.5 to 8 The 500 gold tip 9/32 flew better than the 400 warriors bare shaft 5/16 But the gold tip 500 at a 5/16 had a major wobble in the flight.. All three hit where I wanted with 175 zwickie 4 blade with 50gr inserts. The higher brace height seemed to help with my nock high situation I was having that I couldn't correct by moving the nock. Arrow is 28.5 length

Yes sir it’s very easy to do and really does affect arrow impact!
Love the clear, concise information. Thank you!
Thank you im going to order my new shafts and this really helped me decide what I need
My 2 recurves are marked as 40#, and according to 3RiversArchery, that means I'm pulling about 37#.
(also mentioned that one is about average length and the other is shorter, like 54", and they said that the bow length is irrelevant)
And in regards to the Gold Tip Warriors I've been getting, I got a couple 600 spine the other and tried them out along side the 500, both at 30" and using the 100 grain field points (2 of each). Shot the 4 four times.
The 600 did seem to shoot straighter at first, but the more I shot, the harder it was to tell.
Finally, someone to explain it! Thanks Jeff
Thanks for watching hopefully it was helpful 👍🏻
Thank you so much. Great info Great videos. All of them. Keep em coming God Bless.

Thanks Jeff great video buddy
The advice you gave me awhile back was spot on. Thanks again! Rule of thumb with the weights up front is very helpful. Most manufacturers spine charts show only 100-150gr point weights (head plus insert). Not realistic at all for hunting loads.
I ended up going with Easton Axis 5mm Trads in a 500 instead of the Black Eagle Instincts. I have 150gr VPA’s up front right now with the 25gr half out insert, but nice to know I can get away with a 200gr head up front using the same insert!
why did you switch to easton axis trad? I would like to buy some, do they fly better than instinct? or what is the difference?
Should I go to a bow shop and ask what arrows I should use for my draw length, poundage, etc? Or honestly would it likely be not as helpful 😅
Thanks Jeff. Appreciate you brother.
Thank you!
You are the BEST Fella >> Thank You
Looking to get into longbow mainly for 3d/field.

But I’m getting it ironed out now
27” draw 58# 250 grain broadhead 100 grain inserts
😁
God bless!

Yes it sure can, you’ll probably just need to add a little more point weight or go down to a 500👍🏻
Yes, I will! Thanks.

Black eagle arrows has a great chart
Yes they do!

Recurve bow 50lbs. Manufacturer does not say at what draw length
I'm looking at a set of easton legacy 400 spine 34in long arrows.
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Thank you Sir.

It will no problem if you’re not drawing much more than 40# on a 29” arrow, the wraps and lumenock will actually stiffen it a little so you should be fine especially with a longbow 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I'm shooting the gold tip trad XT 400's with with a total weight of 720gr, out of a 47 pound at 30" hill style longbow, not much stops them.
What are Gold Tip Trad Arrows like? I'm stuck choosing GT, or Bearpaw.
@@Maddie_Madds they're really tough, they are .204 diameter and high grain per inch, I haven't managed to break one yet.
Thanks!

Probably a 400 cut to around 28” that’ll let you run some decent weight up front for hunting 👍🏻

@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Many thanks!!!
I’m shooting a Hoyt Satori 45lb
Draw length is 28 1/2
What arrow length and size should I use and total foc weight should I have?
Actually the lighter shafts and heavier point weight fly and group the best, just have to get to at least 10-11gpi
Hey Jeff, what archery supplier do you use? Thanks
Hey Jeff, what arrow would you recommend to start with, my recurve is 58# @ 26in. I'm drawing 26in. I'm wanting to shoot
Around 250 up front, i dont mind shooting less, Wanting to run a 100gr brass insert. Should I
Be shooting a 400 or try out a 340?
My draw length is 29 with a 40 pound long bow so from what I get I need a 600 spine
Jeff,
Thank you so much for your reply. Yes I do fletch my own arrows. I was considering at least a 200g insert. The setups you mentioned should except this correct, with a 150-200g broadhead?

The arrows I’m shooting are blackout hunters x3 32” 256gr before putting on the top so total weight on the top of the target arrow is 356gr

A 400 should be fine
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I will check on those shafts. Thanks.

Yes sir a 400 if you’re drawing 30” which would probably be close to a full length arrow in a black eagle 👍🏻

Gold Tip Warrior spine 500 - GPI 7.4 - 30 inches shaft - 100gr brass insert+150gr point= 472gr Total arrow weight.... Does it correct? #45 @28 Bow
