Played this on guitar with Glenn on stage in 1999 - he was rather impressed that I knew the chord changes. We did the whole audience participation bit as well. Only Glenn could get an American talk-show audience singing along with him. He's such an entertainer.

Arrh 1989 my one and only first love and I parted ways, she might have well cut open my chest and ripped out my heart, remember aimlessly driving around with this album on in the car for months totally berift. Never mind eh? It's been 30 years and I'm glad to say the pain is starting to ease...

Watershed year for white suburban 25 year old like me...except I missed the boat....but I watched it sail...and on it were the new generation ....and it definitely did not include Squeeze ....it was acid house...popping Es...raves...technology...no more lyrics,...no more philosophy..narrative..romance...no more Elvis Costello.....Squeeze were irrelevant by 1989...an old romantic has been ...grandpa band...and they knew it. That said, another nice melody and would-be-pop song for a time that didn’t take notice except for sorry and lost people like me....who were in distress...what has happened....I used to sing a melody...write a line...

I was 23 at that time and like you, so unaware of how much music was going to change. At least Squeeze, so underrated, had their moment. Love their music. It holds up so well and looks like they’re still together and performing.

They"re still playing, as fantastic as ever and retain a massive following both young and not so🙂.
Glenn's live acoustic sets are special 🎸.

@@andb3887 Now in my mid 50s I don’t go to any live music events like I did when I was younger. I’d make an exception to see them live.
Their music has been a special part of my life. I remember being driven to the hospital when I was 16 yrs old by my older sister in my brother-in- law’s 1970 Lime Green AAR Cuda. My 12 yr old little brother had a terrible accident and was clinging to life. Pulling Mussels was playing on the radio. It was a surreal moment and that song and that band has always stayed with me decades later.

They were well and truly back together by the time Frank was released in 89. Lavis and Holland left after Play in 91 to be replaced by Thomas and Carrick respectively which I must say aren't bad musicians to have coming of the bench as subs.

Pretty good song but nowhere near as hooky as "Hourglass" from their previous album, which was a Top 20 single in America and their biggest hit (much bigger than "Tempted"). Frank is a good album but it stiffed on the charts and killed the commercial momentum they had been starting to build in the States.
