A full replacement of a house trap with a new composite access pit and cover roughly costs $3,500 or so. But varies job to job. We do provide free and completely without obligation site visits.
I'm wondering what symptoms the homeowner was having that warranted the nice work you all did. Do all houses have these main sewer lines traps, and how do you know when to replace?
In nyc yes, all properties legally are required to have a trap to prevent sewer gases from entering the property. In this particular case the top of where the caps/plugs go were cracked and not air tight. Thanks for you kind words and enjoy your new year!
I wondered that myself too, I haven't seen anyone using cast for anything new or replacement in 40 years. All I've seen plumbers use is PVC and Fernco's, usually with the stainless sleeve to make the transitions from existing cast lines to PVC.
A trap provides a water seal to prevent sewer gases. Not really a factor in preventing clogs. Also provides an opening to clean out clogs. Hope that helps!
Every job is different, and a site visit is required for accurate pricing. The primary job pricing difference maker is if the trap is above the floor, or in a sewer access pit. Lastly labor rates vary widely from depending on the area you live in. If you live int e NYC area we do provide free and no obligation site visits to provide an accurate quote. Hope that helps!
Why not just eliminate the house trap altogether? Those are obsolete and HIGHLY problematic. If you have proper p-traps under all fixtures and proper venting to the out through the roof of the structure you don't need a whole house trap. The individual traps will block sewer gases from entering the dwelling and gasses will vent safely to the outside atmmosphere via the roof vent(s).
NYC code requires double vent house traps for combined or sanitary lines. Other jurisdictions may vary. Plumbing code is not subject to personal opinion, it must be followed.
@@balkanplumbing I totally get that about codes, I'm not faulting you on that, perhaps I should have been more specific with my comment. I'm mostly directing that at the ones revising codes who don't remove obsolete requirements.

Why install a "u" trap???
It keeps the sewer gases out.
Why is this trap worthy of replacement?@@balkanplumbing

Can you tell me where I can buy this Access pit? Please, I can't find this in Homedepot.
Thanks!
Send me an email to dave@balkanplumbing.com and I’ll get you details.
Why are you still using cast iron in the 21st century? Is it a city or state requirement?

Is a house trap still required?
It all depends on your local plumbing code. There is no across the board plumbing answer.
Will not having a sewer traps make the water back up
