    He said monotheism is more “realistic”, but actually, i think multiple beings who manage very specific things is a more reasonable conclusion than 1 omnipotent dude who manages everything in the universe alone… especially when certain phenomena conflict or clash.
    Edit: Ofc I mean before we knew what we know about science, etc.

    • @n0etic_f0x
      @n0etic_f0x 6 месяцев назад +5

      Yes, this world being made by a single god is... just an absurd notion. It is strange but if you think about it all the conflict in the world makes a pantheon more reasonable. Not to mention they also don't love us and all that weird stuff.

    • @snuggldungeon
      @snuggldungeon 6 месяцев назад +2

      Pagan polytheism even parses with science better, you just have to see the gods as natural forces personified instead of literal entities with personhood. Monotheism cannot be divorced from personhood, or you wind up at pantheism or panpsychism instead

    • @mckenzie.latham91
      @mckenzie.latham91 6 месяцев назад +1

      The only reason it is more "realistic" is because it is cost efficient
      Having to worship, sacrifice and pay homage to multiple gods is hard on the wallet
      Better to have one god to focus on, and only have to give 10% of your income to one.
      That's the only realistic thing and the only reason people went monotheistic.

    • @n0etic_f0x
      @n0etic_f0x 6 месяцев назад

      @@mckenzie.latham91 strangely no. Generally pagans want way less. Burn some good smelling stuff and you are good. Perhaps you don’t get to use a temple but most of them don’t think personalization is sensible.
      It’s wacky that we use Zeus and Ra as blatantly false when they are less absurd than Jesus. Sure Zeus and Ra are not real beings but they are less absurd than Jesus.

    • @snuggldungeon
      @snuggldungeon 6 месяцев назад

      @mckenzie.latham91 hahahaha whatever. Druidism is free and you get to pick which gods, ancestors, etc you worship. Norse polytheism/heathenism had no tithing at all. Norse, Greek, and Egyptian still did sacrifices, but only to local gods for boons during harvest etc.
      Zoroastrianism is why monotheism exists, Judaism destroying the other gods in the Canaanite pantheon is why monotheism spread through the world; and it's not about money in modern times it's about control. It's about social and political power, the ability to force as many people as possible into your control.

      @@username-unavailable " I'm not obligated by biology to eat animals" The entire system of global trade and industrial agriculture, one which necessarily exploits and kills animals, enables you to make the lifestyle choice of not taking in animal proteins. Because we don't have the digestive system to really live off of the native flora of one ecosystem solely.
      But that's not my gripe tbh. My problem is the idea of personifying and subjectifying animals, which lack a system of morals, capacity to reason, and in the case of invertibrate insects, anything resembling a mammals' CNS that would enable them to feel pain or consciousness. Saying that termites are necessary parts of a forest ecosystem is fine, but claiming that they have a pain response, something that isn't demonstrated in science, therefore it's amoral to use pesticides to keep them out of structural wood or kill them off, is moralising on the part of a non-moral animal. The guy said he's Christian, how is bringing that up a change in subject?
      Also did you miss the part where the guy said he'd be fine with killing his child if God told him to? I think that's where the unhinged aspect comes in

      20:23 "I'm a christian, yeah."
      Why you have to pretend things aren't how they are when they do?

      I would summarize the initial conversation as a bad faith argument to begin with. The caller implied that ethics can't exist without religion, which is absurd. Ethics are simply a standard of behavior that you hold yourself to and is based on a society's collective ideas of what is morally correct. They clearly aren't from a divine creator since what is considered as ethical changes over time varies between areas of the world. Ethics are also a branch of Philosophy and in that context religion is usually removed from consideration.

      It was not a great call on either side, but the dude is not a deist. Jake asked him if he's a Christian, and he said yes. The caller proudly shamed his own father for not praying enough, and for drinking and smoking. He said it would be the right thing to do to kill his own son if God asked him to, like Abraham is willing to do in the Bible. Doesn't sound like the talk of a deist to me. Jake didn't "change the subject" to Christianity, the caller was bringing a heaping load of Christian baggage into this call, and it colours his perspective on everything.

      I'm reminded of the time the local cops were caught napping in the cars and the story on paper's website had a comment defending it saying people should prefer the cops to be well rested.

    There is nothing more self defeating than a christian questioning atheist moral grounding. Like bro, your moral grounding is a literal sociopath with unlimited powers who’s ethics flip on a whim.

    Don't talk about religion you might accidentally do something that the fans liked you for from the beginning.
