The "I'm not an asshole, I have a heart of gold" vs. "If I'm hurting people online then that's not my problem, they're not real people to me" cognitive dissonance is baffling. These two things CANNOT coexist. I think this guy should seriously reconsider getting on the internet until he's worked out his inability to see other people as human with his therapist.
This is what happens when you sustain yourself solely on 'Rick & Morty' and 'House'
I really truly feel like this dude has built an entire worldview and personality around the idea that "anything and everything online isn't real and therefore doesn't count" for the sake of feeling like he can indulge his worst impulses and lean in to his most toxic self on the internet while still thinking of himself as a very good person.
That's the whole thing going on here, I think. He can't accept the possibility that what people like Jake do has any value, because that would fundamentally invalidate the idea that he can be awful on the internet and "it doesn't count" so therefore he's still a good person.

This guy is very SparkNotes Nihilist mixed with some Greek tragic hero. As a person who identifies as a Nihilist this is all too familiar. Maybe it's just me, but the, "I've got mine, so screw everyone else!" mentality doesn't sound like the best foundation upon which to rebuild society.

I would frame any future 'guests' like this in that way, so they might understand that they are fine but have growing up to do. The ethic of the wise knows he knows little. That was an amazingly ridiculous argument and there were several things he said that short circuited his own viewpoint. Like...I'm not even part of the Twitch community (we're signed up we just usually wait until it hits RUclips. Which we shouldn't do), I'm not trans, my partner's non-binary, but I can definitely say the last few years would have been SO much worse without you, Hannah, Suris, Logicked, Sir Sic, etc. And that's all stuff we couldn't HAVE in person. That idea of community without the constraints of physical presence (especially during a plague). Information, community, charity, news, comedy. All of that has value. And I didn't have to risk anyone getting sick for it.

This is a problem that a lot of people on the internet seem to have. They believe that because they can't and never will see someone's face online, they don't really exist in any meaningful way, therefore making everything permissible. You've gotta try to be nice and encouraging to others online - they need it, just like you do.

Videogames have done so much damage. Especially Far Cry 3, I've seen so many Vaas wannabes using that damn phrase without any sense or rythm. Like could we maybe think through the media we consume? Tho I guess part of this guy's problem is his inability to empathize with people he doesn't consider "real." And yeah, that could be due to his trauma and that's not his fault in any way, but becoming an internet villain is not a healthy coping mechanism.

I made it 40 minutes in but I can’t listen anymore. I think what Jake is doing is admirable and maybe in 5 or ten years this guy will have the maturity and experience to understand Jake’s points, but in my opinion this guy just sounds like a disaffected young man who’s at an age where stubbornness and bitterness are stronger than empathy and compassion. I didn’t catch if we know how old he is but my guess is 17-22.
Anyway, maybe Jake’s conversation will help him but I don’t think he’s ready to change his worldview or temperament yet. He sounds like a decent enough human that he will eventually figure out though.
