Any discussion of morality when it comes to religion is a distraction. Social animals evolved altruism as a beneficial group survival trait, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that animals with more highly developed brain have a more nuanced sense of it. The only reason it gets dragged into these discussions in the first place is because these Christians make the unjustified claim that they have a monopoly on it.

I'm not all the way through the video yet, but it's looking like this Christian fellow is just outright lying about slavery. He seems to be relying on his audience's ignorance -- they'd assume there is one universal law for everyone, so if he describes the Biblical rules for how Israelites are supposed to treat Israelites, his audience will assume that's the end of it. But there's explicitly an entirely separate set of laws for how you can treat foreigners and people captured from surrounding nations. And those rules are clearly and unambiguously cruel slavery for life. Ownership of people and their families. As property. To be passed down as inheritance. There is no option after seven years to leave.
Also, even the rules for owning a fellow Israelite includes 1. being able to beat them, but as long as they don't die after said beating, you receive no consequences, 2. while male Israelite slaves were allowed to go free after a period of time, if within that time the "master" had them marry and have children with another female slave, that woman and children had to stay with the "master"...so basically tricking the male slave into staying into permanent slavery because of *course* he doesn't want to leave his wife and children behind and 3. and female Israelite slaves being treated basically like concubines. Sooo yeah, slavery and servitude was just shitty all around for Israelite and foreigner. D:

I so much would like to have an actual conversation with any of these people, but they are just incapable of it. When they ran out of pre-prepared talking points and you still have questions, the conversation just ends.

Kind of weird that racist and misogynist Christians have been using that line from the Bible to justify all manner of bigotry, oppression and atrocity. It just seems that Christianity in Europe is centuries of weaponising Christianity to dehumanise others and justify mistreating, oppressing and even killing them. Well firstly, let's not ignore the fact that he's spent his entire video post-hoc rationalising why slavery doesn't exist in the Bible, and therefore by his logic, The Bible has nothing to say about it. So how does HE know slavery is wrong, huh?
But other than that, let's say all morality DOES come from God. SO ... why the fk does he think God came up with all of that stuff? Why is God against stealing, murder, rpe etc.? This idea that it's more moral to follow a law from God without understanding the intent and the purpose of that law is absolutely bizarre. That's not morality or ethics. It's mindless. And that's why people who follow morals thoughtlessly often act immorally. Ironically, you could argue it's a kind of mental slavery.
I don't get guys like this. His opinion is also obviously subjective, even in a Christian context, yet he spends the entire video claiming otherwise and critising others, and has no self awareness of this. Who does he think he is convincing?
Even Calvinism recognises that non-Christian’s can have morals. Some atheists have better morals than some Christians. But a general Theist worldview provides a better foundation for morality. Things become right/wrong, not just pleasant/unpleasant or advantageous /disadvanteous for society.
"Right and wrong" are words that are relative to the actualization of a desired goal or outcome, absent said goal, the terms right and wrong become meaningless.
My "goal" is the actualization of a healthy flourishing coperative society based upon our common desires with respect to wellbeing and the values it incorporates, empathy, respect, equality, altruism, reciprocity. That is why one "ought" to treat another's as you would like to be treated, One "ought not steal if you wish to live in a society were property is not stolen. One "OUGHT" not murder if they want to live in a society were people are not murdered. This is our "reference point" or standard.
One "should" or "ought" do something if Its conducive with the actualisation of a situation that conforms with one's goals and values. These "values" themselves are subjective by definition however it is entirely possible to make Objective declarations or decisions 'Within a pre-agreed framework of subjective values'.
Values are socially approved desires that are internalised through the process of conditioning, learning or socialisation and that become subjective preferences, standards and aspirations a shared idea about how something is ranked in terms of desirability, worth or goodness

Atheist since birth? What is that like. I mean, I'm catholic most of our life is non religious but we were always dragged to church when I was young. So it is hard to fully accept atheism although I am quite agnostic nowadays.
