- TLC's Sister Wives has returned for it's 18th season and the hypocrisy, inconsistencies, and out right lights are being exposed.
It is my speculation that in next week's Sister Wives episode we are going to begin to see Meri break free from the toxic orbit of Robyn and Kody. I understand this is a big deal for Meri and I sympathize with this difficult decision. However, I also believe this departure is long over due.
Over the seasons, I've watched Meri be dragged unwillingly into Kody's friendzone. This has lead to heartbreak, humiliation, and manipulation. It also gives the people who are suppose to care about her the ability to assert power and dominance over her.
I thought this would be a good time to share my thoughts on the power of friendship. Meri didn't want Kody's friendship. She wanted to be an accepted and honored member of the family. Unfortunately, she didn't even have a friendship, as much as she had a situationship with the Brown family.

I'm with you so far except for the "Friendzone" bit. The idea of friendzoning is inherently problematic and actually isn't what Kody is doing to Meri. Meri is not his friend. She's someone he's leading on and utterly disrespecting.

I think he described the friend zone very well actually. Have you seen the relationship zones video by hoe math here on RUclips? Men with BPD such as Kody think of relationship zone maps the way that women do. Meri is all good girl stuff and totally spending all her time and investment on him, but he doesn’t like her look and she doesn’t have enough dark triad to keep him happy or attracted. But he will let her keep spending money on him. Classic friend zone dynamic.

James is right in that she should have dealt with that first before getting into another relationship. Not all of us are as mature as James, myself included though I am much, much older.

Kody has strung Meri along for years and emotionally & financially abused her. It’s sickening to me how he has used her wanting to be loved as a way to mistreat her in the worst ways.

Why is Christine applauded and adored for finally leaving and Meri not? They have both been verbally abused, used and thrown to the curb. They just faced reality and left in their own timing.

They aren't friends. They only get together to talk smack about the family. When do they go for lunch,go shopping, stay and watch a movie, ge together to play cards? They don't.
So true. Robyn talked Meri out of going back to school. She conned Meri into staying in a loveless marriage, but still sending a check every month. And after all that Robyn won't even let Meri in her house. They aren't friends, let alone family.
Sadly there are many walking around who are held captive as they hold the keys to their freedom.
I felt so bad for Meri when she was going through “empty nest” all alone. She was hurting so badly and just trying to find a way to be ok. Whether another child, going to college, etc., and no one had any patience for her. Least of all Kody. He was so mean, and so checked out already. He treated her like she was just a pain in his a**. That’s why she was so easily hooked into that catfish. She needed a sympathetic ear and an understanding voice. It was no where to be found for her in that family.
That's what happens when you treat people like garbage. Meri was a mean angry woman that ran everyone off bc she's so emotionally needy and whines all the time. I don't feel bad for her in any way, you reap what you sow

It made me sad that she called herself 'the other woman' at the holiday get together because Kody is past Meri being a romantic partner. She's been continually demoted. She went from the first wife, to the "soul mate", to a sister wife, to a mom to many children for many years. Then she became a divorcee, a wife in name only, a friend and now almost an acquaintance they don't want to invite over. It's sad and cruel. Just because Meri struggled doesn't mean she deserves to be expelled to being alone and shunned. It looks even worse that Kody is expending angry energy towards Christine and is apathetic to Meri.
I totally agree with you I been watching this show for yrs . I never seen christian , Janell, robin , Kody or other kids be their for Meri . But all of them wanted meri around for her money that only time I seen any of these women or Kody hang out with Meri. They wonder why Meri has build wall , had problem . I totally agree with you everyone of these supposedly sister wives ,kody , children that she has supported since birth when she didn't have to she only had 1 child but supported 18 . I never heard Christina Janelle Robin Kody or children say as much as thanks meri for sticking around making sure we had roof over our heads , food on table. That what makes me upset about Christina, Janelle Meri could used a friend with her pain of treatment even before Robin was in Pictures Christina and Janelle was treating meri like she didn't belong i do believe it was Bec of Kody. Good points as always, James. I don’t particularly like Meri, but she has been blinded by the possibility of rekindling with Kody for far too long…and he and Robyn have used that to their advantage. I’m glad she’s moved on now.

EXACTLY! Robyn knew that Meri and Kody's relationship was over a long time ago. Long before Christine left, Robyn had worked through what a relationship with Meri would look like because she knew that Kody and Meri were done. Years before Christine left. Meri could see that Robyn had been manipulating her all along.

Robyn manipulated Meri from the beginning, starting when she was told about the Brown's by her Aunt who gave her gas money to drive up to their Church, and to the party. She caught Kody's eye and when Meri saw, she told him to go ahead and dance with her. So, she gets blamed for Robyn being in the family. Well, none of the OG3 were happy when Kody "courted" Robyn, and according to their Church's Rules of Marriage, ALL Wive's need to agree before a man takes another wife. So they ALL agreed, or Kody did what Kody wanted.
I feel Meri has been keeping her eye on Robyn and is heartbroken that the family fell apart. And yes, I think she was blindsided when Christine decided to leave. During COVID she was basically only around anyone during a "family meeting". This is when she got serious about working on herself. This woman was afraid to say 'anything', because 'everything' she said was misconstrued in some way, and she would get reprimanded.
Now that the family was shattered during the Holidays, She sees it's over, and I think she is playing Robyn to see how far Robyn will bury herself. Soon Robyn will let on that Kody spent a month with Christine when they lived in Vegas, and I can't wait to see Meri get Robyn to spill it all. I know many will obviously hate Meri, but like you said... I think she has a plan. I mean, they owe her $500,000! And Janelle at least $300,000!
This was Meri's family, and she won't just go quietly.
People say no one in the family likes her, but that isn't true. If it were, she would not have been in front next to Janelle and Gabe at Logan's wedding, and Logan and Hunter would not have taken her to Vegas for her last Birthday, among other things she has done with other's.

Meri alienated first Jenelle when she came into the family, then Christine. She was envious of them having children, especially Jenelle having the first one. They went from bad to worse and she took it out on the kids. She brought Robyn into be her ally, and found out she brought a 🦊 into the hen house.

That’s all good and well but someone shouldn’t have to do a life sentence for their sins. She served her time and shouldn’t be punished forever for sins from a long time ago. This family can’t forgive her so she needs to move on.
All true. She also breastfed Janelle's kids when her supply didn't come in. She contributed financially to the other wives. She has excellent relationships with a lot of the kids according to Gwen whose wedding she attended. She paid for some of Aspyn's wedding so she could have her dream venue when Kody and Christine couldn't cover it. Ysabel lived with Meri when Christine and her were fighting.
She wasn't included in the decisions to court Janelle or Christine. She should have been.
She's been angry and marginalised like the other 2 OG wives. Let's not crucify women for not thriving in a system that's meant to squash their individuality and spirit.

I really hope Janelle and Meri can patch things up one of these days enough to be around each other so they can at least have some OG family reunions and holidays altogether. I love that James very intuitive! I have to say this is the first time I was frustrated over one of his conversations however, I listened. Some things were drawn out too much, but at the end, I think he was trying to make it very clear, but he was expressing And that worked for me I will still be listening. I find James amazing. And PS I was wondering if James was also on a cooking show or does he have a relative? Because I swear I’ve watched him cooking… I could be mistaken, but if not, there’s a cookout there talks the same about food the way he talks about the Browns interesting

I think when people can't be happy for your successes or your new car or whatever and criticize everything you do, they're jealous. You don't have to have more than them to make them jealous. They don't want you to feel equal. I have gone low or no contact with those people. They suck the joy out of life. Robyn is as jealous as anyone in that family if not more so. Kodi doesn't see it but she sucks the joy out of the family with her jealousy disguised as entitlement and victimhood. She has to have the biggest house, the majority of Kody's time, the most "stuff", a nanny, etc. Can you imagine if Christine had a nanny and Robyn didn't? Hell, even if she did she'd still be pissed because she'd be thinking that's money she could spend on her or her kids. I hope Meri is figuring out that Robyn is no one's friend except Robyn's.
When Robyn came in, Meri did have jealousy issues and there was a point where she decided IMHO that she needs to bond with Robyn since she and Kody brought her in or else her relationship with Kody would go south. Then enter the false offer Robyn made of being a surrogate so Meri could have another child. Robyn encouraged this and egged it on until Meri was on board and really excited - then Kody changed course and said emphatic no. IMHO Robyn made sure the surrogacy didn't become a reality behind Meri's back. This drove the wedge where Meri then agreed to divorce Kody (the one who said no and broker her heart) to help the woman (who "selflessly" offered surrogacy). IMHO it was all a set up for Robyn to become legal wife. I think Meri still feels somehow indebted to Robyn for even the offer of surrogacy and I think Robyn may bring this up to her "I was willing to have a baby for you" - blech.

I could be very wrong in my thoughts about why Meri has hung on as long as she has with the family, but I think it's because of Leon. The whole Catfishing episode, not only caused problems with Kody and the wives, but it, again in my opinion, devastated her relationship with Leon and it's never been the same again, on the show...that's all I can speak on of course. The series of events that put Meri in this situation, some her fault, some beyond her control. 1. Kody badgered her about whether or not to take Robyn up on her offer to be a surrogate, and then when Meri is ready to go forward, Kody tells her "No." tells her he doesn't want more children...not with every wife, but her. 2. The divorce. She gave up her legal status to Robyn, and it hurt her to do so, I remember her crying as she signed the papers. 3. The catfish, I know what she did was 'emotional cheating' but she was vulnerable and looking for someone to make her feel desirable again. 4. From the time that Kody knew about the Catfish incident until that day when Meri joked about the 'rules' Kody handed out, Kody used Meri as his own personal kicking post, and encouraged the other wives to behave in the same way, not that they did, but he encouraged it. All of these things combined with the loss of the most important relationship, the one with her child, Meri has been like a whipped puppy just looking and waiting for a moment where someone would love her again. I'm really thrilled for her that she's moving on.
There was something more than the catfishing thing with she and Leon. Leon has to realize why Meri was on line. Leon had to see like the other kids how Kody was treating her. It was more than that. Or Meri didn’t really talk with her child. Something is amiss about all that. Also why did Meri not go to Christmas with Leon? All strange.
Kody couldn’t handle or forgive the catfish incident but he has not once stopped to consider why she went online looking for someone to care about her. As for her daughter, she can grow up. She expected her mother (and everyone) to accept her lifestyle choice but can’t get past the catfishing? Meri has had to live with double humiliation ~ the family’s animosity and the catfish being female.

I've often wondered if maybe Kody's acceptance of Leon coming out as Gay and the fact that Meri was not able at that moment to express herself in a similar manner, might have been another contributing factor. I've even wondered if the reason Kody took the stand he did for the cameras in support of Leon, was in order to make Meri look bad. After all, he hasn't exactly followed through...that we know of...to be fair...with his love and support when it comes to Gwen. I wonder if Meri didn't go to Leon's for Christmas because she didn't feel wanted or if maybe she wasn't wanted. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Meri fan, but I do have sympathy for her.
Great points. Regarding the catfishing incident and Leon. In some of the previous episodes, Leon expressed that she warned Meri against the catfish, insisting that the person wasn't real. In my thoughts, Meri's desperation in wanting the relationship to be real may have lashed out against Leon. Not defending the affair, but I get it. The catfish, real or not, made Meri feel desirable, valuable, and wanted. This made her vulnerable and anyone who threatened that (including Leon) would not have been on Meri's favorite person of the year list. I think many of the problems she faced were rooted in the reality that most people are not suited for polygamy and I don't think Meri is the exception. Thanks for leaving your Takes. Kody finds Meri or any of his wives being with another person as whatever he said back in season one, disgusting or something he couldn't imagine because it was so vile, and yet, when his wives had problems with him being with other women, they were told it was something they signed up for and they better just get over it. I can completely see why Meri fell prey to the Catfish, I'm not saying she was right, but I can understand why she bought into the catfish. Someone gave her the time, attention and care she needed to make her feel desirable and wanted. Pretty Heady stuff. I am not a Meri fan, but it made me sick to see how she was the family whipping post.

I don't blame Christine and Janelle for being wary. Meris past behaviour to both and there kids have been negitive to point of breaking (trust was gone) but Robyn and Kodi should not used there manipulativeness. Least the other two didn't pretend. When cameras couldnt be around them because of covid they didnt interact with her off camera or have to pretend. Now they are away from family they feel no need to be in meris life. You can see in early seasons the tension. So why would they now. But unlike kodi they didnt pretend or hide it well

Meri would never have had any issues with catfishing, if Kody would have been there for her. Women only look outside of marriage when the husband ignores them or does not act as husband in and out of bed.
My take on reality … I think Meri stayed after the cat fishing debacle because she was humiliated beyond & she wasn’t in the head space to actually leave, especially when there was no Prince Charming waiting on the other side. She never did take full accountability for the role she played, she continuously (from what aired and public statements she proffered) minimized her culpability, as if she was less than a willing participant at the hands of a “gentleman” stranger. I think she stayed, quietly in the background and without fuss, as an act of atonement. After years of playing the dutiful, dowager wife (after all, her marriage to Kody was dead), she chose to stick around for two reasons…1). She was going to milk the martyrdom phase and 2). She knew damn skippy it was irritating the crap out of Robyn that she she wasn’t going anywhere!
I’m sure these opinions may be slightly off, but I get a modicum of satisfaction thinking there may be some truth to it 😅
Meri did milk the I am going no where a lot. Also Meri stayed to be on the show & get a paycheck. She has not been actually living in Flagstaff except when they film. She has friends from her online clothing line & the B&B in Utah. Meri has a full life without Kody & Robyn. Meri has a social media pretense & she looks happy & glammed up.
On the show she has played the sad sack. This season she is giving Robyn the look when she speaks.
The giddy happiness when Meri put on Kody's coat was sad. She still would like a relationship with Kody as a full wife. Not going to happen.

She was friends with the friend of the woman who interacted with Mary who posed as the male interest. I’ve heard about it but have not seen/heard of anyone showing the ‘receipts’ that Robyn was involved. I believe Robyn WAS involved. Deceptive Devil-Child!!!! It’s like polygamy sets these women against each other purposely. There is no trust amongst them. Or Meri did something not forgivable. Do not know. But Kody saying”don’t know what to do about Meri” is horrible. She started this family with him. She truly loved him. I believe her personality changed as she knew Kody was never going to be what she wanted. But Robyn begging her to stay while Kody was letting her go was cruel. Meri kept hanging around partly bc of principle, thinking Kody might come around, and Robyn’s so called friendship. I don’t know who helped her see the light or she had an euphony, that goodness. Indoctrination is hard to break. Meri had a lot to get over. I hope she finds her true self, I hope she can now see her other wives for themselves, I hope she finds peace and happiness.

While sitting a a restaurant one evening that song came on and my very abusive started singing it to me with the most evil glare on his face. And he was watching me for years after the divorce. Finally he ended up in prison. So I agree that is a catchy but stalky song.
I don’t agree with the friend zone bit. K didn’t friend zone her-he abandoned her emotionally and dishonored her love. I’m not a fan of Meri, but he has strung her along for a decade. Hope she gets some self esteem and realizes she deserves more.

You have to remember Christine said on the last tell all that her and Meri are not friends Christine doesn't feel safe with her and she ended their friendship years ago
Christine should have ended that friendship. She had her reasons for doing so before but the very fact that Meri was trying to keep her in an unhealthy relationship in and of itself proves that Christine needed to let her go. Meri was part of her past not her future.

Maddie is angry with her for calling her out for underperforming. Business is business. Family is family. Their lines were blurred. Leon loves Meri. Per Meri, Robyn's see her as Dad's 'other wife', like a distant Aunt who shows up for some holidays.

I really hope that Meri has been playing a long psychological game with kody & trolling us all these years. She already knows that Kody is committed to the tenants of his religion which prohibits him from leaving his wives. He will, however, make life extremely unbareable for the women to finally pack up & leave. Meri knows this. Hopefully 🤞🏾 she has been sticking around just to piss Kody off so he is subject to her sad puppy dog face all the time. Meanwhile, she is laughing & have a ball on her own social media accounts. How does one switch up energies so smoothly???? I think she is sticking around until he finally turns his head towards her & then once he says he wants to start things up again, she'll be like, "mmmm, yeah....no thanks" then finally leaves. That is what I hope she is doing. Sounds cruel to say but this whole thing is cruel. I honestly don't even fault her for starting up an affair back in the day. Kody wooed her in AZ so he would have access to the money from her house sale, which he did,then used it and Janelles equity from her house sale to fund Robyn's mansion. Meri may not come across as the nicest wife but it's not fair the mental and financial abuse she's suffered from Kody and Robyn. Meri has been nothing more than a paycheck for years. Kody cheated on Meri with Robyn they can say nothing happened before the celestial marriage, but they lied about kissing so what else did they lie about.

They’ve all said, even the kids that Meri was horrible to everyone. The kids all were raised by Christine, and they all adore her, even Kody admitted when she ( Christine) came into the family it was like a breath of fresh air ( when he said that Meri gave him a dirty look). So even though she’s working on herself, she has left a bad feeling for all of them except Robyn. I really think she sucked up to Robyn to get Kodys favor somehow.
You are right! Her daughter lived with her "other mothers" because Meri was so critical to her. Watching every season I kept thinging she was a snake. Also keeping drama going, then denying any involvement. I would scream at the TV everytime she pit people against one another.
Meri isn't the best person in the world, based on what we see on tv. Before the Catfish situation and even after it, Meri was still "Meri", and I know that based on what they have said, several of the kids have great reasons for not liking her, including Leon. I've seen Meri be mean and deceptive with Christine, telling her back in what...season 3, to 'suck it up and fix yourself" and then seasons later telling Christine she lied to her about that because she and Kody were in the same place. I've seen the tension between her and Janelle and know based on what everyone has said Meri was in the wrong.....but from the show where the COVID Nanny Rules were passed out where Kody and Robyn went off on Meri, she's been like a whipped puppy afraid to bark because she'll get knocked down again. Meri's bad behavior does not mean that Kody and Robyn, both people who have had bad behavior towards the children and other wives, shouldn't be held responsible for their treatment of Meri.

It just occurred to me that Kody wanting Janelle to buy Christine's house was really to screw Christine out of money and put it back in his pocket. There is no way Christine would make Janelle pay the same what she would expect from a stranger. And since eventually they'd sell it at full market value, that money Janelle didn't pay to Christine would end up in his pocket.

The Browns put their lives on TV & that is how the kids got to live without being isolated in polygamy. It is the reason Christine was able to get out of polygamy & she comes from polygamy royalty - the Allred family. It's not like Christine did not give decades of herself to polygamy. Janelle hinted of being in another polygamy arrangement. The Browns have used govt assistance in leaner years. So that is illegal.
